  • A journey from a Train Drivers Cab across the Settle and Carlisle route. One of the most famous in the UK, having staved off closure. This year will see special tourist trains running. A link to Tickets can be found at www.railcharte...
Unfortunately due to management restrictions Cab sounds were not permitted at the time of this recording a few years ago. It is hoped to have an updated version of this journey later in the year with full on in cab stereo sounds. I decided to start from Keighley as the route from Leeds is pretty tree lined in a lot of places. Parts two and three will follow.
This Video was shot using the excellent Garmin Virb Ultra camera and a suction cup mount and edited using Adobe Premier Pro in Creative Cloud. A link to the products I use can be found here.

What I find incredible about this, and most rail routes in Britain, is that they were built in the mid to late 19th century. This was in a time of basic primitive equipment, and these routes are still in use today, although speeds have definitely increased somewhat!
I had the pleasure of travelling this route, north to south one cool fall day in 1973, on a "real" train (locomotive and separate carriages). Half of the passengers were enthusiasts with head and cameras outside of every available opening, and the other half were poor wretched souls trying to keep warm. Needless to say, I was in the first group.

In January 1983, on a visit to Britain, I had the chance to join a SLOA day excursion from Euston to Carlisle via this line, returning behind Duchess of Hamiton to York, with diesel haulage to London. It was a totally memorable day, including a photo-stop of the Duchess, and a run-past at Appleby. I understood we roared up Ais Gill at some notable speed. In a great book on British trains there is a photo of our train, regrettably not to hand. The day was, I think, 7th January, 1983, for those of you able to check such things. Thank you for reviving these memories.

Hello Bruce. www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/ has a very comprehensive list. The closest I could find is 19th March 1983.

@@RailMart Hi, thanks for your reply. As soon as I sent my previous message I successfully searched for the book. It is Mainline Steam into the 1980s, compiled by Peter J C Skelton, published by Jane's.
The beautiful sunset photo taken of the Duchess on the Ribblehead embankment is on p.79, and the caption gives the date I mentioned earlier. Skelton was the photographer.
Greetings from a chilly corner of Australia, and stay safe. BW

Thank you for posting this and the following two videos. I've found them really useful and informative as a writer who is in the process of writing a fiction book of a person who steals a train in Hellifield and gets as far as Carlisle. I have never been to these places and your videos are a great help for describing the layout of the tracks, stations, tunnels, and viaducts. Thank you so much, and if I am lucky to be accepted for publishing I shall credit you as a reference.

Are you inserting the ads, or is RUclips? Though I like videos of train journeys in general, the insertion of ads in the middle of them is annoying, and destroys my enjoyment of them. Currently (I don't know for how long this feature will last) I can view journeys that interrupt with adverts at random places in a browser that I have configured to block ads. I would not block ads if you would put them at the start and end of the journey - not in the middle. If you have any control over where the ads are placed, then please don't put them after the start or before the end.
