Coming back to Shaun's tutorials after a year of practice and progress. Now better realising the level of skill and expertise this man has, it is truly magnificent how smoothly he is able to demonstrate every tiny step of the learning curve. People with this much skill and expertise usually forget the baby steps and skip to the shiny stuff and expect you to do the same which is frustrating and demotivating for the beginner. Shaun deserves a huge shoutout for his incredible ability to empathize and for keeping the "novice inside" still alive.

Best tip for any beginner is to teach them to drop their weight in to their hips, rather than breathing air down into the lungs newbies draw air into the top of their lungs which pulls their weight up making them much more unstable.

Thank you Alex and Shaun. I am about 4 months from being a complete beginner and backward skating is what I have been working on for the last month. I am very excited to learn the powerslide and now feel ready for it.

I taught myself to skate backwards before RUclips existed by practicing on hard grass. especially backwards in a circle. If you fall no big deal it's only grass... I just got back into skating for the first time since skating the half pipe at Chelsea Piers in NYC in 1999. After 2 days I was skating backwards again. Muscle memory has a long memory.

12:37 oh man, that's just crass how fast the guy is on the road. My problem is: When driving forward I have at least the safety of the protectors, but when driving backwards just not. I think, therefore, that will never what with me when driving backwards. The coolness is terrific...... "envy"

You don't actually teach skating. You teach working. There is a reason for the expression "Skating through life" and I bet you can' tell me what that reason is. At almost 63 I have been skating longer than you've been alive. I was a certified Roller Blade instructor 25 years ago. I raced in marathons and did win my age group in Tahiti. So without googling it I dare you to explain the old saying "Skating through life" and how it relates to all the pushing and working your techniques require? Come on I double dare you!

Great Tuts, but after 1 backfall, most will reconsider their fate.
Crash and Safety course, on how to fall backwards.
    Tense the body
Palms spread out backward to cushion fall
Keep neck tensed, with chin stuck to chest, so as not to have the head move loosely
    Curve upper torso forward,
all in one move. The lower u are to the ground, the softer the fall.
On a level smooth strip, u won't feel a thing. And that iz without, PRO GEAR.

Great job in the tutorial, but I was a little bummed you didn’t cover the backwards 360, I’ve already learned crossovers and grinds backwards, I think my skill level was a little too high 😂

Thanks, Shaun and Alex! You guys are great. I know how to backward crossing over in ice skating, but I haven't tried doing it in rollerblading. I find ice skating is more comfortable than rollerblading. I use more energy skating on pavement than on ice.

Thanks for all you do man. Asha and you have brought me to being an intermediate skater within 6 weeks. I still recognize I have so much more to practice and learn though. You're an amazing dude.

Nice tutorial, tried all that today.
Small question (I guess it's just the way it is but anyway...): when I transition from forward to backward, I put allmost all weight on the front foot as it should be (leaning against the direction of movement), let's say LEFT foot in front f.e., so I'm looking over my right shoulder. Then I should do C-cuts with the left foot as action foot, but the weight has to shift to the right foot am I right?
Also when I'm alternating the C-cuts, there's no real scissored stance between the pushes. The weight is more on the back foot, because you're pushing with the front foot. I try to regain a scissor stance with weight on front foot in between pushes but the transition is a bit awkward.

Love your video! The warmer weather is pointing out! I've taken some ice skating classes during the winter so hopefully that'll help. Namaste from a Torontonian 37yo dad skating at beginner level.
