She does have grey hair, and I'm convinced earing organic food csn prevent s lot of inflammation on thr body(arthritis) and that helps mobility, as well as eyesight and everything else. If John possible pushed for more intimate actions, which I don't really believe because he's a white european man who grew up in the early 20th century or even the very late 19th century. a white person being with a black person was heavily rejected by society and was considered very taboo and scandalous, so I don't think he would really push for more intimacy considering the era and the environment he was born in, miscegenation/interracial was a no-no.
But if he did really push for intimacy mariam would either 1. Decline and avoid him because of his actions or dialogue that suggest that he wants to have s*x with her out of fear of public shame and humiliation from her culture and her people

So my question is ...in telling of the story no one can find out who this man was and where he ended up for closure for this woman? It seems to me that this can't be he just randomly showed up in her village. Was he assigned there from an organization to help teach them better farming skills? Who is he? Id rather know that than just feel sorry for her and negatively judge the man when whole parts of this story is missing. This is all very vague to me. Is there a part 2 to this im missing?

I have long story with my first love. He's from another contry too. We love each other, one day he said he couldn't marry me and been very upfront with me about this. And also said that "i can't promise something to a woman if I can't carry out that promise". I'm grateful because I met a man like him and I don't regret that he became my first love.
