I've never lost money on a car (so far) and there's some awesome stuff here... but as simple as it is... that first point is genuine gold. I think people overlook that... They see the potential payday or potential value, and skip over the aspect of risk vs reward. Wanting to own the car mitigates that stuff significantly. Awesome stuff Vin.

Selling cars often and not losing money on sales price is great, but what about the taxes when you reg it? In cali it’s about 10% so on a Raptor that’s probably $8000 right off the bat. That’s why I tend to just hold on to cars that don’t devalue.

@@Type-RS You have to consider it in the price on both sides. If you are saying $8k in tax that is a $80k vehicle, which means there so so much more wiggle room on the price. Likewise on a $5k car, the 500 is easier to finagle.

The amount of time and effort it takes to pull this strategy off is insane. You have to already be obsessed with cars and spend most of your free time happily fixing cars to even consider this. You'd have to be the type of guy that's scrolling market place for a deal while youre at dinner with your girl and while you're laying in bed at night. I love cars but I have way too much other stuff going on to keep my finger on the pulse of the market.

This is 100% one of the best pieces of advice.
I currently have a 2019 Renault Megane RS280. The car is an astounding performance platform even for a FWD, it's a joy to drive.
The problem is that there's less than 1,000 RS280 & RS300 in the UK, and because they're 2018 onwards, theres almost no knowledge base for fixing anything.
I'm swapping it out for a 2005 Porsche Boxter 987.1, which I know is equally as likely to have problems, but with a plethora of knowledge on sites like youtube and forums, I am far less scared of something going wrong.

Another good rule for the mods especially if they wont add value or you like to change things up often. Is to buy the mods used. Good brand aftermarket parts usually sell for about 60-70% used and if they condition stays the same you can sell them again when you are done with the car for the same price or sometimes more. Works very well when you live in bigger cities. Lots of people around with the same car to buy and sell with.

I agree wholeheartedly with these and appreciate the rawness and honesty so many people skip! Buying cars is a maze you weave through and staying ahead of the curve is huge. Like a WRX, you could do a base model but the value won’t hold like the higher STI, but if you can’t hold too long or then you’re the one losing. Last tip I’d add on there, don’t spend what you don’t have! Cars are great, being in debt because of a car is not. Stay in your range and play it smart as you can slowly upgrade. Taking out a massive loan to buy a new mustang, bad idea.

I ended up inadvertently using your tips on Monday when I picked up a 2005 Volvo S40 T5 AWD with a 6 speed manual for $1,600. It's a car I absolutely was interested in getting, it's rare, it was a good deal despite having a black interior that I thought was boring, and I basically pestered the owner enough that I had the car on a uhaul trailer 24 hrs later. It's a car that I'd be okay with just keeping but with a little TLC I could absolutely sell this thing for $6K since it came with a fat stack of maintenance records, 2 keys, a clean title, and has no significant electrical issues.

I hope you read this Vin. I discovered you through a DDE episode, saw you started your channel and am happy to drop a like in every one of your videos.
You're bringing content to a more humane level, being a super nice dude with such a good energy to share. Seems cringy to say this, but we need this theses days. People that are actually people, not a propaganda machine of succes and ostentation.
Keep doing what you're doing the way you're doing.Never let your success change you (as I know now researching your background that you're keeping being), 'cause that is the perfect recipe for even more success.
I hope one day I can meet you and sit for a talk, you seem to be a really nice person.
Much love from Brazil! Keep rockin'!

I cannot lie I unintentionally followed this method with my 91 Mazda Miata. Got it for a great deal, replaced the custom exhaust with a stock one, began converting it to oem plus, and actually made a profit off the car when my time was done with it. After selling the MST wheels and KBD body kit I was actually positive about 1.5k on the car.

Love it! I do swedish cars. Right now ive got a long term Volvo C30 t5 v2.0(pre R-Design, less than 2000 sold in the u.s.), but I just cruised through a manual Saab 9000 2.3t, and I'll probably snag a 9-3 Viggen next. Great points on this video, you cant be attached to these things. Its just metal and plastic. Enjoy it and move on. Also I previous had a 360 for a work car back in 2010 when I lived in Vegas. Let me tell you just how fun changing the water pump is on that car hahahaha!! I miss that thing though.

I’ve had over 60 cars and follow a similar strategy. Only lost money on one car. The goal is to own the car from 6-12 months and break even. It’s enough time to get it out of my system and I can own a car long enough to appreciate it. I always have at least 2 cars in case a good deal comes by or a persistent buyer wants one. Following these rules give you leverage and most importantly, never be afraid to walk away from a deal. If it doesn’t make sense then don’t force it. Don’t get too passionate about the purchase unless you are planning on keeping the car for the long haul.

Some really valuable lessons here. Planning on selling my IS350 daily drive (drove it for too long, so it's depreciated). Planning on buying an SS Wagon (with the L98 V8) here in Aus.
Stay in it for a short time so you don't lose your arse on it. With that said, they don't make SS Commodores anymore, so I mightn't lose much cash on it when the time comes to sell.

Another great video and some very interesting way to think about cars and how to get into different rides. Now that you are at higher level of cars that you're buying, selling, and driving have nice older/mid range cars lost the appeal or do you still like getting into a nice GTI or Honda etc and taking them for a drive?
