I've been a vehicle appraiser and adjuster for 10+ years and Vin's exterior inspection advice is spot on. Body shops paint will always look nicer than OEM. OEM paint process is with the body/unibody on a rotisserie painted by a robot. OEM paint will almost always have some level of orange-peel. Body shops will usually sand/polish their work so it's super shiny to impress customers. Look for paint that is way nicer than the rest - this is often the sign of a repair, albeit a good one.

I've adopted the habit of doing a Google image search now. Sometimes it shows pictures were used before in say another add or app. That may be a good sign of a scam. Video calling is also a good follow up when a deal seems too good to be true.

    • @AndrewDRoyappa

Good idea. Similarly, just googling the VIN (no pun intended LOL) will instantly show in Google images if the car has been at a salvage auction. Great way to see what the previous damage was if it's been fixed

  • @Timo_tambien
    @Timo_tambien 3 месяца назад +12

Great video Vin. One thing to point out for CA buyers. The seller MUST smog it within 90 days before transfer. And as a seller, you want to do that to protect yourself. Otherwise the buyer can go get it fixed however they want and you will be on the hook for it.

This is a solid video, and it goes for a lot more than just cars. I tell my wife all the time that it's about the hunt, sometimes you just gotta find deals. The number one thing is being able to walk away from a sale. Too many people get fired up and try to buy the first thing that comes their way. Something else that would be worth touching on is not falling to any pressure from a seller. If you've expressed interest in a car, sometimes the seller will try to persuade/pressure you in to rushing through the selling process, either to hide issues with the car, or try and squeeze more money out of you with phantom buyers expressing interest as well. It's worth checking how long the ad has been up, if they've sat on it for a few months, chances are they don't have 5 other people lined up to buy. My last bit of advice is playing your cards close to the vest. If you haggle with someone and they drop the price of whatever they're selling, maybe don't show up in a grandpa gold Ferrari. In my case our '99 Ford Ranger does the job.

Bought an rsx-s in 2007 for $10k and 45k miles. Drove it for 4 years and added 50k miles. Sold it for $9.5k.
Got an s2000 right after for $6k and 100k miles. Now worth at least $18k.

@@PigeonLaughter01 cars are never a good investment. Even classic Ferraris and the like. In the long run, you're better off investing in the stock market, real estate, etc.
The point being made is to at least break even and not lose too much in depreciation after you drive and keep them for a few months/years. At times, you can even make a little more than you paid and then jump into something more expensive and niche.
My next car for example will probably be a Lotus Elise. The Elise will barely if at all depreciate no matter how much I drive it.

I used most of the sites before using autotempest and autotempest is great at pulling prices from different regions and doing the comparisons for you, great tool. May I suggest to the community, talking to people, especially if you’ve noticed a car sitting. I found my 2001 Avalanche sitting in someone’s driveway for sale by the original owner family. Grandpa passed so grandson selling. But it was legit! Only 133k!!! Just in case folks don’t know, PPI means pre-purchase inspection. Running a plate is FIA and readily available with the person's address etc. It's important to read the vehicle description and when contacting the seller, if you can gain the vehicle vin#. You can run, for free, a vehicle history, or for a small fee, a really detailed history on the vehicle. A tool I use when car shopping.

My family is probably going to need a second car within the next year and most new cars aren't doing it for me so that leaves me with looking at used but I'm apprehensive about what I'll end up with mostly because I don't trust people to be honest.
I've heard that it's not impossible to roll back modern cars' mileage. Somebody said to me to check the brake and gas pedals since people rarely check or change them. Like the odometer may say 30K but the pedals look like they got 100K on them. Have you heard of this, dude?

This is great video I wish I had something like this to watch before I bought my car. When I first saw it it was warmed up so it didn't know the was bad exhaust clamp, it rattled on cold start and went away when it warmed up. It was an easy fix but it would have been nice to know before I bought it. I also did know what the typical sound the car made at idol. So when I got it home and it was cold I thought something was wrong but after searching around and listening to the other car I realized that it was just the normal startup and warmup noises for that engine.
    Great information and awesome video👍

You NEED to bring an obd scanner. I looked at a car and the guy had removed the bulb from the check engine indicator, hiding to a laundry list of codes.

Great video super informative! But I would say fluorescent lights are the most critical when looking at paint work on a car. Think spray booth 8 foot fluorescent lights on top at the sides and at a 45. You catch the light on a hood and follow it across you can see any little scratch or spec of dirt on that panel. Just sayin

@@vin_tra Yep thats true. Funny story, my nephew bought a car and didn't realize it had a salvage title. I'm looking the thing all over doors and hood still had the vin stickers, fender aprons and rails had no damage on them, it wasn't a flood car. months go by it's a great car for him, we pull it in to my garage/shop which has the spray booth esk lighting and it hits me in the face the roof was replaced. It must have had a tree or something fall on it. Instantly able to see the roof had been repainted under the fluorescent lights.
