For this Extra Throttle House sofa chat, Thomas and James have posed a fairly difficult challenge for themselves. What is the best 3 car garage you could buy for under $50,000 combined? The rules are, you must pick a daily, a classic, and a sports car listed on AutoTempest, all while staying within the $50,000 budget. Thomas and James take rather different approaches to this challenge, so grab a hot cuppa and get cozy. We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

Every time I go back to thinking James is "just" a car nerd, he pulls out this weird (weird is good in this context) mix of film/series/retro-culture/ultra-nerd/meta/science comments and I am impressed by how far his knowledge and details of them goes. Please continue to be this approachable. This charisma paired with modern/retro culture is exactly what we need and drags us back to this channel. I would go miles to just have a beer at a pub with him.
More of this please. Used enthusiast cars we can afford
We can’t afford them, with content being made about them tho?
Having owned 2 discovery 3s and a discovery 4 and fitted 5 replacement engines between them, the idea of a reliable landrover is way too funny to me.
You had bad luck. Had 06 and 07 LR3 both over 210k and never touched the engines. Just a suspension pump on both around 150k.
@@garylind6464what if the opposite was true? You've had good luck? 🤣🤣
Jepp. When Thomas was talking about the most reliable Land Rover, I was thinking that's a bit like talking about the most chaste pornstar. It just makes no sense...
My mum had a discovery 3 and a discovery 4 when I was a kid. Both went wrong at the exact time the warranty ran out. Both kept going into limp mode and the air suspension kept going down and getting stuck down.
That zf transmission the lr3 uses isn't know to be reliable when it's wrapped in a ram 1500 body
My wife & I love your shows. We love the insights and just fun shenanigans you guys get into. We really enjoyed this show and it caused us to really think about this. Here’s what I picked: daily driver, 2018 BMW X5 - $25K, sports car - pick up a ragged out Miata for $5K and dump another $5K in performance upgrades to make a track car that is a lot of fun to drive. Which leaves $15K for my classic, which would be a BMW 2002. That was a lot of fun. Thanks guys. Cheers!
Sagen’s wagon is a VW Squareback. In 1976 I got one for 6 clarinet lessons. We started our marriage in 1977 with my wife’s 914. Great car. No rust in Seattle. Loved that car - now I have a Boxster S.
Sagan's wagon is a Type 3 VW squareback.
I screamed that at the screen
He obviously loved his air cooled flat 4s.
Came here to say this and you sir already did. Hats off.
YES!! All the dream car garage videos!! Please do dream cars from each country next.
Maybe market is better? There's a LOT of countries and car companies
@@kakutasubeatsSecond this!
YESSSSSS THIS IS A GOOD IDEA
Great idea
I'd watch that stuff all day. All from the same country, three different countries, different decades, engine type (only 4s, only straight 6s, etc.)...
So... I live in the north east, and it's "summer car, winter car, motorcycle" for my garage. Currently the collection is (summer) 98 BMW 540i - paid $5k, (winter) 99 Chevy Suburban - paid $500, put ~5k into getting it in shape, (Motorcycle aka. Sport + classic + convertible) 71 Honda CB100, 72 Honda CB360, 74 Honda XL250, and 85 Yamaha 750 - Paid
Being in the North East as well I get the summer/winter aspect of this comment!
Absolutely loved this video, format and everything was perfect. Would love to see more of these in the future.
James' Miata is probably quicker than the Boxster of that age 😅
It is _definitely_ quicker than a 2.7 986. An ND2 is competition for a 3.2 986 S. It doesn't sound nearly as good as either one, of course.
James guessing the 986 was an absolute delight to watch. Best part of the episode!
Daily: 2020+ Volvo V60 T5, $28K cause wagons are the best.

Just sold my 2012 Equus because of my job needs and I really think that I will miss it. Love the comfort and styling. Incredibly smooth engine too. Good choice.
Equus is a great suggestion. I would personally lean toward a 20-25k 08+ LS3 C6 and a cheaper Z32 but these are awesome suggestions.

I'm 💯 on board with the sports and daily. 1st Gen Ridgeline is a surprisingly fun daily that has allot of utility. My dad used to have one.
Hard lineup- thunderbirds aren’t my favorite but you pulled it back 😂
Why not like a used SV650 or something? The R3 is really boring as a motorcycle.
C5 Z06 ftw
Ridgeline is a solid choice. May have to do a first gen due to the pricing.
more of this would be great love when we have to research to meet certain criteria it even makes me think of cars that are under appreciated
You guys are so much the best car guys. Entertaining, fun, illuminating and enthusiastic. Thank you
I had a 1973 240Z that had a tired motor, so I installed a fresh short block for a 260Z with a Cannon intake and triple 40DCOE Webers. Most intoxicating intake sound this side of a Ferrari Daytona. It was light and quick and I got a whopping 15mpg! Great memories!
14:00 That is a Volkswagen Type-3 wagon (AKA: 'squareback') pictured next to Carl Sagan. Pretty rare cars. Build in the early 1970's and share the same basic air-cooled engine and transaxle from the Beatle, but with different cooling design.
It was called VW 1600 Variant in it's country of birth
Super cools cars! I own two of them, and it would definitely be my pick for a classic. I like them even more now that I know Sagan owned one
Seeing the Golf first off the board as the daily brought some joy to my heart. 2016 Golf is such an excellent car!!!

I love this segment. Real talk for real budgets.
Major props on the 240Z. Owned one of those many moons ago and it was fun with a great gearbox. And 1972 is the year; by 1973 the emissions regs were creating real issues (mine was a 1973). And getting one with no rust is a major coup.
sagan section: moon of mars. His wagon was a vw type 3
LOVED this challenge! It's actually realistic; having $50k and enough space to store 3 cars is not totally unreasonable. Also, that 240 was gorgeous 😍
My first car (bought in 1988) was a 73 240z that has been set up for club racing. Aftermarket aero package and carbs from a Jag XJS. Loved that car! There was a guy in town who was a Datsun expert who kept my carbs in sync (something that was required). I wish I had been in a situation to hold on to it and rebuild it.

Had a 2002 MR2 Spyder manual - one of my top three all time favorite cars. I tried to pick three cars I haven't owned, or that would have been an easy pick for a sports car.
I always love stuff like this.
1. I’d go for a manual 07/08 Acura TL Type S in kinetic blue pearl.
2. I’d need something practical so I’d look for a Pilot, Passport, 4Runner or even a Grand Cherokee.
3. My classic would be a Volvo 850 R. Something that’s fun and quirky.
That's a great list.
TL type S ftw
@@HankM56 Previously owned an 08 TL Type S in that blue. Loved it. It was an auto but next time I’d get a manual.
but the 850R also has the added utility of being dailyable.
@@2JZDestroyer that’s very true. I was thinking the sedan but the wagon would be pretty sweet as well.
James, your picks are so funny to me because I not only would pick the exact same things, I pretty much did. I have a 2020 GTI and unfortunately just had to sell my NB Miata when I brought home my baby (congrats on yours too!) my brother and I both bought a CJ8 Scrambler (same thing but with a truck bed, old gladiator basically) to learn stick on when I was in high school. We never had any problems with the old AMC V8 but it was insanely scary to drive above 40 because it steered so poorly. I never knew we were such similar people! Love the lists guys
This is awesome. Much more relatable than Doug and Kennan’s completely unaffordable choices for the average car enthusiast.
Doug has become extremely out of touch with reality. He calls the $70k Kia EV9 awd affordable. Last I checked the average new car costs $49k, even that is a ton of money if not making $100k+ (regardless of if the dealership/bank will approve you for more).
@@jakes5530yea I feel like he's letting out his ego quite a bit. He tends to trash on cars that aren't German brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche. It's honestly annoying to me.

Love the mention of a Prelude! I had a gen 5 several years ago. Great car. I am curious, though…there is a E35 M5 out there for $15k right now? I need to start looking.
I just bought a 5th gen Type SH last year. Total beater. $2,700. I drive it to work sometimes. But man, you're talking a _seriously_ nice one for that kind of money.
I promise I’m not obsessed with Porsches.
986 Boxster S - 15k
Cayenne S/Turbo - 25k
944 - 10k
Owned a 986 S and I don’t think there’s anything better for the money. I love my Macan as a one car solution but if I had the space for multiple the Cayenne makes a great daily.
Do you really promise..?? Those seem like top tier Porsche enthusiast picks 😅
@Viabhav6969
There’s something to be said about having similar tools or familiarity with a brand though; at least if you intend to perform your own maintenance.
I drove a 986 S and it made it to my list; it's that good. The Cayenne is the only objectionable choice here but I've never been in one.
944 is an interesting case because it's kind of like a Miata but harder to maintain...practical though.
Interesting you can make this happen for 50k!
Completely agree. 986S is the best car I’ve ever driven.
I had a 2016 VW Golf. You described it perfectly: easy to live with and practical. It served me perfectly in my city days. and was fun (enough) to drive.
The best car reviewers, thank you making my life better. I am lucky enough to have my driving life sorted with an Elise and 86 for daily.
James, I would have a mx5 over the 86 but I am over 6’.
Would love a bike version of your program. Thanks again.

Secondly, I would take Thomas’ choices here 100 times out of 100 lol.
This is straight up the content I want you guys to do please!!
The sit down and talk videos are really enjoyable for us; you should keep doing more !
Golf is a smart daily choice. One of our daily cars is a 2019 Alltrack SEL, fully optioned. We bought it in 19 with 6,000 miles on it VW CPO so full coverage warranty for 7 years/84,000 miles for $27,000. We currently have 50k miles on it, clean car, no accidents ect.... Today it is worth 23k-25k.
I had a 2019 Alltrack SEL as well. One of my most favorite cars. Swapped a Golf R turbo in within the first 10,000 miles and kept it until around 135,000 miles. No issues, super fun, great in the snow with snow tires, loved it. Only reason I got rid of it when I did was because a vehicle I placed a preorder on came 2 years sooner than I anticipated.
I really enjoy this type of videos, so keep doing them.
James, you basically nailed it. I have an ‘18 Golf GTI, a Jeep Wrangler TJ, and hope to get a Miata next… this can be done in the $50k budget
Wrangler just turned 25 this year, so technically a classic, but have owned it since 2001.
The Boxter is tempting though, I browse them as much as Miata’s
Really great episode guys!
Very relatable topic. Add also a way to stitch together a lot of B roll and file footage into a fresh video.

I want this exact idea but I want silly challenges and critical banter going back and forth. Getting ice cream might be the first challenge/activity. Watching James try to eat ice cream in his suspension-less jeep would be worth two giggles and a shit.

Total shocker to hear the pick on a LR3. Just bought a 2007 myself for 10k CAD and am very pleased with my purchase. A set of new KO2 tires , thorough cleaning, some delayed maintenance and we have a fabulous vehicle that looks practically new inside and out, and drives so comfortably and is very competent in almost any off road situation. Definitely not fast or even remotely sporty but it rides so comfortably with that air suspension. Also picked up an Atoto P8 for about 200 that fits perfectly in the stock navigation screen location, so it even has CarPlay and a rear view camera.
Lol my current garage is almost a match for what James had. Good taste.
Daily is a Saab 9-3, sports is an NB2 Miata, and a Jeep TJ for wheeling.
Thumbs up for Datsun 240z, Bravo Thomas, Bravo! 👏
I bet in less than a month we'll get a new "I BOUGHT A NEW CAR" with Thomas talking about his new Nisan Z.
couple of great guys in an awesome video. thanks! more off this!
This reminds of the good old covid couch days where you would just sit around hypothesising about cars - maybe my favourite format of video for you two.
I’m pretty close to that now:
2012 FJ Cruiser (daily)
2006 Corvette (sports)
1993 Miata (classic)
Porsche 928(1980s so like 20k)
G37x (awd) under 100k miles and under 13k for daily.
And a 2005 Cadillac xlr
Absolutely loved James' 'classic' selection story.
The diversity of available vehicles from the search, is _hilarious!_ So many weird, terrible, forgotten gems. 😄
14:35 - A tiny highlight for me was the Fiat 500's front overhang..! ( _Theoretically,_ it has an even better entry angle than James' final choice for this category.)
Fascinating, about Sagan - funny about not choosing the same as he.
P.S. The wagon is a Volksy Type 4. Always seemed like one of the crappiest wagons ever: unloaded, it already has rear weight bias; high loading height; no rear side doors.
It amazes me that James said he tried the Mazda3 and the Golf and it did not compare, i am blown away. I owned 3 golfs (2017 included & currently a 2022), and recently drove a Mazda3 2019, that car blew me away. I wanna get rid of the golf asap.
