The Throttle House Car of the Year (THCOTY) is back for 2023 and this year the guys have some pretty amazing new car releases to pick from. From a Lamborghini Revuelto to a Rolls-Royce Spectre, 2023 was filled with some truly terrific new cars. The issue with price ranges are, that if a car starts $2k under $50k, but with some options (based solely on preference) it will go over $50k, then does that qualify it or disqualifies it?
For example, in 2018, I would have said that best car overall under $40k was the Camaro SS
It had some things that complicated it so I bought a Mustang GT instead. But the Camaro was better as a sports car. And I love the Miata.
Basically what I’m saying is that money defined cars don’t make them the best. Some may be best for you, but not the best car generally.
Oh and in 2018 if you wanted to get a Camaro 2SS and some add on’s then it would have gone above $40k…. So then that’s a problem. So if for you the best Camaro SS is over $40k, is that the best car in the $40-50k?
@@maverickphantom005 that is really easy calculus. If the car requires options to be good, it isnt car of the year in its base price. So it doesnt belong in the 40k band...

I'm convinced most people feel nothing through their steering wheel. I'm always the only one to notice glaring faults felt through it that no one else feels, which leads to diagnoses of steering, alignment, tire, shocks, or suspension issues.
I agree steering is extremely important.
Agreed. If it’s not communicating anything, life becomes much harder especially as you push it.
Electric steering just doesn't work. It just doesn't. You want either unassisted steering, presuming the car is fairly light, or hydraulic assisted steering. Yes, I know, nobody does this anymore, everything is electronic steering...which sucks across the board.
@@LanguagesWithAndrew Electric steering has many different forms as well. Porsche does it quite well, funnily enough I thought my Camry had hydraulic steering but I checked and it's electric. So really it depends on how it's tuned.
And that's the reason most cars have such a numb steering - most people just don't care. If it is comfortable for a daily, which most means easy to position the car, then it is OK.

There is not a car channel that I enjoy watching more than these 2 guys! By far, the most entertaining and informative, just so well done! Keep it going for 2024!
Glad to see the expansion and well worth the money gents! You deserve the added support so, at the expense of speaking out of turn, don't be shy about offering the added content! Many other creators are charging (and being paid) far more, for far less quality! Even the merch is a huge example of why you all are so great and so worthy of the support. I can't count the others asking for direct subs and far higher costs that provide absolutely nothing tangible and just do what they would be doing anyway. And in addition to the merch that is already worth the fee to sign up, the kicker discount codes. I will be signing up for sure!
I really enjoy your channel. I don't own any of these, so no emotional scars. Good choices, with good reasoning for each one. From your reviews of the 911 GT3 and the Cayman GT4 I had a strong feeling one of them would get close to THCOTY. Keep up the good work in 2024! Cheers!

Always entertaining (and informative). Thank you for a great 2023 and I look forward to this year's videos. One suggestion; get some Lotus's on your Leaderboard. As soon as your Emira arrives and is broken in and please get an Elise/Exige back again for a twirl around your track. I and other Lotus owners would love to see the comparative times. Happy 2024 and keep your revs up!

Awesome video, gents! One suggestion for the future might be to do two versions of this: one for cars regular folks can afford, and then a podium and flat tire awards set for hyper/super/fantasy cars.

When i saw your video of the Lotus Emira. I KNEW this car was special. The mesh to see the shifts, the sound, the power and the simply beautiful looks. GOD DAMN I want this car so bad. Never in my life have I wanted to save up for a car until I looked at it. Im so happy to see you guys give it your car of the year!! Hopefully you get it soon!
Having driven the Lotus Emira twice. All I can say is it's absolutely phenomenal.,,, I was so close to buying a older Mclaren mp4 12c and if not a 2nd gen r8... But both those cars were missing something, and that was a nice analog involved driving experience. The Emira is in a different category of speed and car, but I don't care it checks all the boxes.
The first gen R8s are more analog than the 2nd gen model. The 1st gens had Hydro steering and a manual, whereas the 2nd gen got way more soft and GT-like...
@rahulmandala4930 Yes I definitely wanted a 1st gen v10 manual R8 but the cost has been pumped up too high imo for 1 car... for my circumstances at least I'd rather have the Emira and something else for v10 manual money. 😖🤨... yeah yeah I know I'm crazy 🤣
I work for a Lotus dealer (EU) and you're bang on. Our car park is usually full of broken ones and both our demonstrators are broken, but godamn when they work... it's so worth it. Absolutely fantastic car and even though i see the behind the scenes, I'd still have one in a heartbeat.
That to me is a great indicator if a car is worth it. I've worked for Subaru and now Mercedes professionally. There are not many Subarus I would buy but I would recommend most Benz to anyone who has the money.

Same truck and 37's. I concur... although... not exactly... what it was intended for lol. Mud -> All-terrains helped a ton. Sketchy AF on the wet. Traction control for the win though! Side note: took it out to CO and did mountain passes at 13k ft and THAT is where it shined... Side note 2: I feel like I need a Miata to continue watching this channel lol. Maybe I can convince the wife... 🤔

The best shifters I’ve ever tried was on a 1990 Honda accord 4 door and 1992 accord. You feel that you’re in control. But remember you have to get a good one of them.
You guys are the best, my favourite channel. Keep up the amazing work and videos. In club house maybe a spot that followers can recommend good trustworthy shops where they buy parts or get work done on their cars. Would be super handy.

I've been in love with the Emira ever since I first saw it in your review.
Methinks the Prius team need to strut around inside Toyota for having listened to the potential customer feedback on "If you could make it look better, I'd buy." Honorable mention to the Corolla Hybrid, I rode in an Uber driven and it was solid.
Tom and James are already acting like Lotus owner! "I agree Porsche is a better car but...." and talks about why Lotus is a better car. Basically me everytime at car meet and trackday

We Porsche owners will be thinking of you EVERY WEEKEND while at the track turning laps. I wouldn't trade my GT4 RS for anything except a GT3 RS. The reliability is absurd. I drive the doors off my Cayman in a way that would melt most cars.

Although I've never seen one, let alone drive, my pick would be the Caymen GT4 RS. For the engine noise alone, though from everything I've seen online, it's all around terrific. But being a working class stiff I hope to some day pick up a more modest entry level last gen 6 cyl. Love your channel guys...always a lot of fun.
Great video and very excited about the discord (will join as soon as I can). Listening to the way you describe Lotus (the company and lack of support) reminds me an awful lot of how I'm starting to feel about Alfa and their apparent decline again in the US.
100% agree about the top pick. As soon as I saw it, I was at their website designing my own.
Unfortunately, I'm not made out of money, so it's still about 80% more than I can afford, so I got the M-sport 2 series instead.

Love the new format for this! I feel like for pacing the Flat Tire awards should be earlier, maybe at the very start or before the CoTY itself? Not sure but ending on a high note with the winner + runners up (not runner ups) is a bit more ~feel good~ to me

As a BMW tech i couldn’t agree more with the XM getting a flat tire…… I wholeheartedly agree it was just a test platform for the new M5 powertrain
I worked at bmw when the xm came out and when they brought it to us it looked funky, had problems on delivery and was significantly slower than an older x5m
I'm glad you chose Emira over GT3 RS. That Porsche undoubtedly is a peach, but it is more track focused. CotY needs to be great at least on roads. Track is a bonus. But that origami infested Porsche is a bit other way around.

I was lookingat the poster of the car you designed in the background and it is crazy how similar the ferrari purosangue and that looks 😮. Its almost as if you guys inflienced the design of that car
I thought I wanted the Lotus, but once my local dealer said they'd have mostly the $100k plus models and my corvette wait list got to me... $60,000 corvette was wife-approved and very very nice first/only/last sporty car before I die.

Wish Ford had some road-going model/version of the Ford GT in the same price range. Wouldn't even have to have the extravagant body styling. Supercharged Shelby GT500 engine, RWD, and some kind of sports car definition outside the Mustang lineup.
Also wish Ford would take that 2.3L Ecoboost and make a Toyota GR86 competition.
Love to see the Prius on this list. Car of the year award are usually populated by six figure vehicles.

Or you could look at it another way. They have a very high quality genuine platform that affords them the ability and credibility to do this and have acceptance/buy-in. They deserve this continued success because they earned and they are awesome. Not something that could be said for some of the other RUclipsrs.

I'm really happy with our 2nd choice, a new GLE AMG63s. Fits our desire for luxury and power....perfectly, a living room in a bank vault strapped to a rocket..:) Maybe an Emira later?

As someone who is also awaiting an Emira, we learned last month the V6 First Editions will be delivered soon, but the AMG I4 First Editions are delayed until Q12025, so only 15ish months more to wait…

I know you guys have at least 1 sim rig between you guys. I've seen that you guys run Assetto Corsa; do you guys run any other sims?
RFactor 2 is by far my fave sim in terms of vehicle dynamics. I'd love to see you guys run a stream or something! Show off your driving chops against some fans!
I’ve only played Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione. How would you compare the vehicle dynamics in RFactor 2 vs iRacing? I know iRacing is more popular but also more expensive.
Also what’s your rig/setup?
I use the Thrustmaster T300 with the 599XX Evo steering wheel and T-LCM pedals on a Playseat Challenge fold up rig.
I’d love to upgrade to direct drive, but I don’t know if I can justify switching architectures and spending more money since I’m in college right now and hardly have time to play it.
@@Toolace I think iRacing is good, while they feel different, overall it's about on Par with ACC in terms of handling (but the FFB on iRacing is the worst). But I find RFactor 2 to be LEAGUES ahead of iRacing in terms of vehicle dynamics, physics and Force Feedback. There are certain cars in RF2 that no other sim comes close to; like the Historics, open wheelers etc. Way more dynamic and connected than other sims. Drive Rf2 then iRacing back to back, and iRacing feels totally numb.
I use a Moza R9 and Sim Jack Pro pedals, but I just very recently moved from a Thustmaster T500Rs and modded TLCMs. Definitely a very worthwhile upgrade, but the T300/TLCMs are enough to have fun and be competitive in all sims so don't feel like you NEED to upgrade. I enjoy sims much more since getting a DD/better pedals, but I am only marginally faster, and I was happy with my Thrustmaster setup for YEARS.
If you are gonna stay with TLCMs for awhile, definitely do upgrade to polyurethane brake bushings though.
Do you use single screen, Ultrawide, triples or VR? I currently race in VR with a Reverb G2 and can never go back to screens. I'd personally recommend moving to triples or VR before I upgraded my wheel/pedals from what you have.
And definitely try Rfactor 2, there is NO sim that gives me the level of connection to the car that RF2 does. This was true even on my Thrustmaster setup, but how good it feels is only more pronounced since I upgraded.
I post some RFactor 2 videos on my channel, nobody watches em for the most part, but if you want to see how the sim looks in VR, feel free to check it out lol
Great to see the Emira getting the recognition it deserves. The UK motoring press seems to have forgotten that it exists.
The drawn out launch is part of it. First drives and deliveries were in 2022, so some addressed then. But then 2023 was first drive for many. But then kind of 2024 bc that's when it'll actually launch in many markets.
Reminds me of the drawn out Supra announcements. Or the drawn out Acura Integra announcements. Or the drawn out Nissan Z announcements. The hype was greater than the manifestation.

Solid choice guys! The Emira is a great car. I ended up cancelling my order, but will be first in line for an upgraded future version (as long as I can still get one with 3 pedals)! 👽

First shipment of Emira's are in Baltimore, have EPA cert and awaiting CARB. None CARB states are actually receiving their cars as we speak! Ex in CO.
Keep your order and do a long term test on it. Will help to dispel some Lotus ownership myths I suspect.
Having spent an awful lot of time in an Emira, I'll never understand it winning any awards. It's very pretty, unique, and one of the more raw experiences you can get these days, but there are just so many flaws and drawbacks that push it away from an 'of the year' award. That said, this is a fantastic video and I'm glad Throttle House continues to churn out such quality content. Thanks for 2023, TH gang, looking forward to '24!

As a multi-Lotus owner... I get it. The Throttle House guys and I are on the same page. I actually cheered out loud when they announced the Emira as the winner.

@@sc705 Exige and Evora S. But the Emira is next. If it's basically a heavily updated Evora S, then I know I will love it.
I'd suggest you guys take a look at what Chris and Jordan from the photography community with RUclips channel now Peta pixel have done for their year end wrapups. They have drinking games and its very exciting. Also maybe a collab among Canadian hosts would be cool one day.

Damn i love throttle house and watch them for over 3+ years and i never thought their financial situation will ever go to such a level that they need to make a subscription for something they provide. Although i will still support them because they make awesome videos and they're dope and i respect them.
Enjoyed car of the year! Would really like to have you do a daily driver of the year. One you could haul the family/friends, great to drive, and some what affordable… say $60000 or less. Prius, I guess would qualify. Enjoy the ride😊
The Acura Integra Type S. Honestly it's high praise to be honored as a runner up among other cars that are 2-5 times its $53k MSRP
