Got a premium automatic in Pavement grey a few weeks ago and love it. I drove nothing but manuals for 15 years and just got sick of them. It's not the ZF8 that was in my Supra but it is a really good auto and to me doesn't detract from the fun at all.
As someone who daily drives a manual, has a motorcycle and who spends an unhealthy amount of time on a racing sim rig. If the paddle shifter is responsive enough, I'll take it over a manual especially when all I want to do with it is drive curvy roads. Though, because you're now more focused on driving rather than shifting, you'll tend to drive faster into corners potentially entering corners too fast.
I neither prefer or dislike them. If the auto is good, then it’s good. In some cases, the auto is just bad (like the WRX’s CVT), so the manual is the only logical choice. In the BRZ/86’s case, the auto is decent, so it’s not a bad choice at all. In the Supra’s case, the auto is great, so the it’s a toss-up between the auto & manual.

It looks like it takes about a half second when clicking the paddle and the transmission shifting. That isn’t instantaneous like a dual clutch but it’s not bad at all. In fact it’s a very decent response time for a 6 speed torque converter auto and might be better with a TCM tune. It’s not a ZF 8 speed but it looks like an improvement over the previous gen despite having the denied downshifts which can be fixed by a tune if a company is willing to R&D it. I personally like it and think the paddle shifter designs look sporty and fit the car, but obviously a manual is the better option here given the performance and full experience. Sure a manual makes you feel how the tranmission is working but to be an auto can make you feel awesome too on a turn.
Nah, more and more manufacturers are not using DCT. It’s fragile and def not suitable for daily use. the speed of AT gear shifting has been increasing considerably and its reasonable even from the standpoint of durability
how did you get a Premium gr86 that's an automatic in your possession? It seems like dealers sell the base model with a automatic and a premium with a manual. I have never even seen a an automatic premium for sale lol. Topher has the connections apparently

it has a built in safety that doesn't allow downshifts above 4k. prevents damage and gives you 1k rpm of headroom in the next lower gear. the real issue is just that the gears are a bit too long... I get that it would be better if they allowed downshifts to redline, but to me that's really not a big deal and will be tuned out by someone im sure. I have a 600whp Supra in manual as the weekend car, and this car is still a ton of fun to drive in the mountains (manual mode AT), but then you can pop it into regular AT when you get stuck in traffic etc. You also get adaptive cruise and a bunch of other stuff on the AT that's way better for DD duty.
@@jonasbaine3538, the MT diff is the same diff for zenki 86/BRZ (4.10), and while the kouki manuals had the 4.30 that wont change the world with the auto (I'm getting one of these tho). to actually get the auto to perform more similar to the AT you need like 4.40 gearset or better. that said, second gen diff is a 3.90 vs the manual 4.10, so the changes are a least a bit more pronounced when upgrading.
Thanks for the review. The black wheels match the black mirror caps on the GR models (versus body color mirrors caps on BRZ). One feature with the AT is when in 'sport' mode, the sound maker increases in volume - to the same level of the manual. The AT is a bit quieter of a car than the MT without needing to unplug the sound maker when driven normally/cruising. Lower engine RPMs at highway speeds help too. I never understood the obsession with manuals by various reviewers/youtubers etc. I am from Europe, everyone and their dog drive manual here, it is nothing special, we don't make it such a big deal. I would vastly prefer an automatic for a daily driver, and in my opinion this particular model is more of a sportscar/daily driver hybrid than a pure sportscar like the Supra is. It does not have too much speed anyway so even if you are the best manual shifter in the world in order to get consistently perfect shifts, its acceleration times are still mediocre and you don't really save any fuel with the manual. The automatic is slightly slower at 0-100(0-62 for americans) but you get it consistently with the automatic without a fuss. This car is perfect as a batchelor's daily driver, it is small, it is light, it is fast and nimble, it is reliable, it is relatively practical, and it looks great. The manual would be more fun for track use but in my opinion if you want a sportscar to track this is not it. Even a 2.0L Supra would be vastly preferable for track days.

@@frankfeng6199 Yup... got offered more than I paid and used the money to buy a house.
@@fifth11 fair enough haha! congrats on the house

Do you find that you have RTV issues with more spirited driving like people are saying?
As a person with no hands or feet, I’m glad they made an automatic option.
1:57 A car that is everyone's dream with many features that really support the driver.
As a person who is just lazy, I prefer automatic over manual when it comes to newer 2020+ sports cars.
Me too haha
I neither prefer or dislike them. If the auto is good, then it’s good. In some cases, the auto is just bad (like the WRX’s CVT), so the manual is the only logical choice. In the BRZ/86’s case, the auto is decent, so it’s not a bad choice at all. In the Supra’s case, the auto is great, so the it’s a toss-up between the auto & manual.
I like manuals but I don’t like driving manual after a hard hike or leg day at the gym so auto it is lol
@@theconformist2399 tbh I don’t include CVT’s under automatic. Since rarely any real sports cars come in a CVT stock.
I am SO glad I ordered mine in this colour and not in black. It just looks FIRE!
Love that blue colour very cool👍 the gr86 is looking amazing and i think it's going to be a lot of fun to drive. it's going to put a big smile on many people faces.toyota is bringing the fun back to their cars
i think putting a loud exhaust to this automatic will make it alot better than standard, cuz you can still down shift and hear the pops
As a person, I'm so glad we've got the automatic option
I love my GR! It’s my first sports car and I’m happy I got it when I did! I guess my only weird gripe is that when you drive the doors don’t auto lock. Which is a weird feature to keep out in modern cars. Not an issue tho I just lock it before I take off
I also thought I was the only one who noticed the fast blinking issue
That auto lock feature is more of a brand thing than a new car thing. I don't think any Toyota's do that.
@@harrybuhse8622 ahhh shit I didn’t know most of my cars I had before were either VW or Suzuki (with an occasional using my grandmas old caddy before she sold it ). This is my first yota!
@@serpent86 That's okay you're not the first person to make that remark. I drove a Hyundai a couple months back that auto locked and it freaked me out because I'd never driven a car that's done it lol
@@harrybuhse8622 my ‘18 4Runner does
If you don't know how to drive a manual, don't be scared, it's super easy to learn. I bought my first manual, having never driven one before.
Still would go auto lol.
@@ACommenterOnRUclips yeah man I agree with you
If I have a daily car like a Alfa Romeo giulia(my next purchase) I would swap my gr86 to a manual 86 instantly but it’s my only car rn and auto is perfect
Toyota really has been stepping up their game with gr86, gr yaris and gr corolla!
front end looks better then the new Z. GR86 looks great all around.
I was planning on buying a manual 86 very soon as my Tacoma is almost payed off, but now I'm kinda considering an auto
what did you end up going with?

I FINALLY got one!!!😮💨😮💨😮💨❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Wish you could add pics on here. Mad I didn’t get to test drive it but OMG can’t wait to see it! Not even 3 miles on it (they said). Am 70 years old hate manual cars automatic is for me it's a pleasure to drive all the time
Im sure 90% of people who buy this car will go for the manuel but it is nice to see the review of the automatic. Im a car enthusiast so I do prefer a manual however having an automatic in a sports car isnt a bad thing either. Hense Supra. I mean its about the steering and driving quality and how it moves you on a turn or a corner. Sure a manual makes you feel how the tranmission is working but to be an auto can make you feel awesome too on a turn.
people saying they happy they got an auto version as if 99% of cars aren't auto I'm glad it has both options for everyone
I really hope they're going to consider using DCT one day. The lack of bite in the Torque Converter is enough to be a deal breaker for such car.
Nah, more and more manufacturers are not using DCT. It’s fragile and def not suitable for daily use. the speed of AT gear shifting has been increasing considerably and its reasonable even from the standpoint of durability
once ecu tuning if available there should be transmission tunes to change shift points and agressiveness

how did you get a Premium gr86 that's an automatic in your possession? It seems like dealers sell the base model with a automatic and a premium with a manual. I have never even seen a an automatic premium for sale lol. Topher has the connections apparently
I got a premium automatic in December with no markup. When I was looking for mine it was between the premium auto and 3 other base autos. It seems like there wasn’t many manuals allocated in my area.
There’s been a few on dealer lots. My friend bought an auto premium GR86 back in March.
@@alh06 yeah I don’t know around here it’s basically all the base models are automatic and the premiums are manual. I do remember seeing a couple manual base models though
premium automatics are everywhere man
This is a true sports car! Finally! A car that champions driving experience over just horsepower or initial acceleration 😩 a real enthusiastic sports vehicle!
Definitely getting an automatic just as a daily since I’m already working on my s197 mustang gt
it has a built in safety that doesn't allow downshifts above 4k. prevents damage and gives you 1k rpm of headroom in the next lower gear. the real issue is just that the gears are a bit too long...
Yooooo can I drive the supra??
simple fix for automatic is to just install the m/t frs differential that has a shorter final drive. that will make all gr86 automatic gears shorter
@@jonasbaine3538, the MT diff is the same diff for zenki 86/BRZ (4.10), and while the kouki manuals had the 4.30 that wont change the world with the auto (I'm getting one of these tho). to actually get the auto to perform more similar to the AT you need like 4.40 gearset or better. that said, second gen diff is a 3.90 vs the manual 4.10, so the changes are a least a bit more pronounced when upgrading.
great insight tho, i can use (manual mode at) when having fun and just regular AT when doing daily
I’d rather buy auto for daily drive and use paddle shift. How do you think? Must buy manual?
Thanks for the review. The black wheels match the black mirror caps on the GR models (versus body color mirrors caps on BRZ). One feature with the AT is when in 'sport' mode, the sound maker increases in volume - to the same level of the manual. The AT is a bit quieter of a car than the MT without needing to unplug the sound maker when driven normally/cruising. Lower engine RPMs at highway speeds help too. The Michelin PS4 are a big disappointment in terms of road noise and tramlining.

the brz sells in the number/figures as a future collectors item. A limited trim/spec 86 or brz will no doubt appreciate in value if kept in near stock form with low wear/tear. Cant say much about other cars these days. To me thats the hidden value of having one of these as a secondary option since they bring so much value as a drivers/car on the cheap as well as the low volume sale/future collectability aspect. For me thats the added value to this platform that others also dont bring to the table
How is the interior like? I've noticed many modern Toyota, Subaru and Honda cars including my 2020 Camry have awful plastic interiors that buzz and rattle like a 30 year old bus.
I am not against an automatic in these cars. My GTI was an automatic and I loved it. If I were only looking for an automatic sporty or sports car I’d probably look at other options.
Which options would that be... I am curious
@@ajax8384 It depends on what you want. The BRZ/86 is the sportiest bang for the buck and only affordable rear wheel drive. I sometimes miss the utility of my GTI, and the DSG is really good. In this day and age very few people find manual transmissions interesting.
Hmmm...you keep forgetting about the Mazda MX-5 as another lightweight, affordable RWD car.
I agree: I prefer the Toyota styling better.
Hate the seat and door panel material. Upholstery? Why? It looks like it won't age well and will start to smell eventually and stain easily. It's the premium package. Why couldn't they have gone with leather or at least faux leather?
You should look up the history for Trueno, you won’t be disappointed.
I have an ND RF in manual and for some reason the automatic in the GR86 was actually better than the manual GR86. Not sure what it was exactly.
I would assume most of the manual reviews are done by experienced drivers in near perfect conditions to get the best numbers possible.
That dashboard is AMAZING.
To me it's good to see a good automatic in an 86 because there are people who because of medical problems can't dirve manual, so I like that they are not being left out :),
But for anyone else, just take the manual 🙂
There’s a lot of traffic near me so I don’t wanna live with the extra work from a manual
Wasn’t a fan of the original twins, but I really like the whole GR line from Toyota

I can’t wait. Looking forward to driving mines.
I recently was in the market for a GR86 because I previously owned a 2017 Toyota 86.
After countless days deciding if I should pull the trigger for the GR86, I just ended up getting a 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition. The GR86 is a great car, but after driving an 86 for nearly 5 years, I figured it was time for something more practical and comfortable for daily purposes. I do hope the GR86 sticks around for a few more years as I plan to return to the platform in the future. But, in the mean time, I'll just stick to my truck and explore the world of off roading as it was something I've always had interest in.
Bulova Lunar Pilot? Nice watch.

Hi, this is my dream car since i was 16. I will be writing this comment and I promise to be back here once I finally have this. Please root for me
At 12:02 it seemed ridiculous that this car didn't downshift to second gear. I wonder if it was a problem because he started turning the car or had his foot pressed on the throttle. I don't think my IS300 would have a problem in such a situation.
Nice Omega Speedmaster! Also, great review!
