If I wanted a pure driving car I'd get a MX-5. If I wanted a toy that was more practical I'd get BRZ. I just don't don't think the Toyota does anything that sets it apart. The 86 has more HP, but the Miata is actually the faster car in both the 0-60 and the 1/4 mile because it's so much lighter. The MX-5 has a better clutch/shifter, a better power band(specifically in the low end), better gearing, and is a convertible. I also don't agree that this car looks more "aggressive" than the new ND Miatas. The older Miatas absolutely, but not the new ones. The ND Miatas have pretty aggressive styling, and I'd even argue the the RFs have an exotic look.
Got to be honest, I definitely see the absolute best-looking exterior feature of the Accord coupe on the 86.... those taillights. Interesting that for sheer 0-60mph. time, the Miata beats the 86 with 5.8 seconds. I mean 6.6 seconds with the automatic? My mid-size 2009 Mazda 6 sSport trim with its V6 engine can do 0-60mph. in 6.5 seconds. Something's not quite right when a significantly older family hauler can easily keep up with something like the 86 in straight-line performance. The BRZ, the 86.... why does no one want to talk about how underpowered these cars are? At least with the Miata's reputation, you don't expect a ton of horsepower. But even that one gives sub 6 second straight-line performance.
Miata has a more aggressive overall gearing down low. You don’t frankly buy these cars for 0-60 if you want something like that your missing the point of these cars.

The 86 is around 2800 lbs., 168 inches long, and has a flat 4 engine. (I have had many Subaru cars, this engine design is known for head gasket failure. It's not a gasket problem - it's a design problem). The Miata is around 2400 lbs., 154 inches long, and an in line 4 engine. Known for it's reliability. The 86 is designed as a 4 seat coupe, the Miata a 2 seat convertible. I would avoid the 86 because of the engine. For those who say Porsche has been using the flat 6 for years - yes they have, but much better design than Subaru at a much higher price point. Also old Porsche's did have oil leakage at the head gasket.

The premium seats and wheels look nicer but I’m concerned about the seats being too hot down here in the south. Don’t know if I’ll stick with either trims wheels or stereo long term. You think for the premium they’d have gone a little wider on the wheels or at least thrown in the optional subwoofer which you don’t get standard with premium I mean if the base still had the old 2.0 and the premium had the new 2.4 it would be a no brainer but is the premium worth the up charge if I’m going to replace all the “upgrades” anyways. @@RaitisRides I think that the AT gr86 is more suited for me and my driving requirements summer and winter. Especially with the new improved performance of the AT that is shown in test one the road and track. I don't track the car either. I don’t know
I’d say just buy your wheels & wider tires from fitment industries
I think just for the interior upgrade and adaptive headlights it’s worth the 2000 or 1500 dollar difference
I would use a body wrap where the air intakes are to show motion. Nice car!
86 or brz ? which better in terms of locks
Are those wheels going to fit a 2017 86 ?
Enjoyed your Video great Job!
Toyota GR86 Or Subaru BRZ Manual Or Automatic They Are Fun Sports Cars To Drive
Them tires all season?
How do you remove the roof??????
amazing review!! you rock dude!!!
Joe, taken it to the edge at the track. Beautiful sight 🏁 Lori A+ 😉
Thanks for taking the on throttle drive with us!
Love it! Gr8 review as always Joe. Didn’t say hi, but saw you at Reeves this morning. Take care
Hey Joe how quickly does the car respond when you use the paddle shift? You mentioned a couple of time during the video it does well handling gear shifts on it own but I'm curious about the response time of the car when you take over. Thanks
Mazda is pure top notch.........Mazda has a premium quality Interior..........Mazda ⚡️
As a daily driver (winter and summer), would you recommend the auto or the manual. What transmission did you prefer in the gr?
The auto would be more consistent but not as much fun.
@@RaitisRides I think that the AT gr86 is more suited for me and my driving requirements summer and winter. Especially with the new improved performance of the AT that is shown in test one the road and track. I don't track the car either. If I end up with just one car, the AT gr86 fulfill all my needs and more. So my choice stands between a fully equipped aygo x limited, gr yaris sport, and the gr86. Already tested the gr yaris circiut edition and was not that impressed, and it lacks in the audio and safety features for a daily. So it comes down to the one I like the best after testing. Another thing I find cool is the auto start option with the app that only the AT gr86 gets. Convenient in the cold winter months.
WHY would you ask someone else for a recommendation on a car that YOU will be driving ????
Its like asking someone what food you should eat ... SMH
@@ACommenterOnRUclips Ok... Dont bother then.
@@ThomasAAT Then dont ask someone else for their opinion on a car that YOU are going to drive ...
Do you ask people what you should eat for dinner in the summer and winter seasons ???
The styling looks awesome!
I like the GR86 styling better, but reading the BRZ has aluminum control arms over stamped steel and stiffer springs
I think I read it from Japanese review saying the BRZ should be ever so slightly lighter and more focus on stability while GR86 is better balanced front and back, also easier to bring the tail out.
Personally I will pick the GR86 simply I like how the front look better and I like the Toyota logo more than the Subaru.
Coming from a Miata enthusiast I’ll take that gr 86 any time over the Miata.
I am kinda in the same boat. I like the piratical aspect. And this seems to be a huge upgrade over the previous generation.
Excited for a heads to heads comparison, I liked the outgoing 86 but engine and backseat wasn't enough for me. I believe seats are the same but excited for engine improvements.
I can't wait either!
Is 18 inch better for performance or cosmetic
How did it change color from Halo to bRed? Lol. Thanks for a positive review of the 6AT. Your review motivated me to pull the trigger on the 6AT here in my small town. They were having a hard time acquiring a 6MT. It gets here off the boat on 3/9/22. Can’t wait 😛
Congrats! It's almost here!!
Tbh i like the miata for its looks. Its unique. I feel like other brands could blend in with each other.
Can’t Wait to test drive the 86. I’ve been seriously thinking of the Miata. I intend to test drive both, I will say that the 86 lines are so much more stylish and sleek than the Miata and I do like the Miata but this is exciting!
it's been a while since i saw you enjoying yourself that much
This car design is spot on mate
The clutch is so light in these cars, that I couldn't imagine getting it an auto, even in stop and go traffic. That plus hill hold assist.
If it had auto rev match I wouldn’t think of an auto but I’m moving to the Bay Area and traffic is horrible. I want the easiest commute possible while still being fun
LOL Hill Hold Assist is for panzies
Miata RF > GR86 > GT86 > Miata Soft Top is my opinion. The RF looks so good- straight up gorgeous, but if it did not have that going for it, i would go GR86 any day. Miata soft top i would not even consider, it does not look as appealing to me at all.
This car looks so good. I just love the red color on this car
“Not the word your thinking of…you crazy person!!” 🤣🤣🤣
Gorgeous!! Brings back 90s feels
A two seater roadster that was built with the sole purpose of being light weight smaller and simple something no car company is doing .... i would definitely pick the miata the comparisons between the 86 aren't really there to be honest
Check out savagegeese reviews, maybe it'll help your decision more. Miata still a great choice though
Always making good videos 👍🏻
