Keep up the great work!
Hmm... the car was called an 86 because of the perfectly square engine. 86mm stroke and 86mm bore. So with the new engine, it's not really an 86, but is the best 86 ever 😃
@killercivic the GT 86 I'm talking about is the version of this car that was launched a few years back. It's a 2 litre motor. 86mm bore and stroke. It used the Subaru boxer motor. The 1.6 was from a long time ago.
@Valen-mh9fh Yes I've driven a GT86, although only on the road. I'm afraid the GT86 is the only car Chris Harris and I disagree on. I found it to be dry. The lack of enthusiasm from the engine dampened every part of the experience for me. I wanted to love it, but I couldn't. I also felt like the chassis rigidity let the car down, it would mimic settling onto a rear tyre, but that wouldn't naturally progress into a slide. The new car is far closer to the original AE86. There's nothing fake about the way the car transitions to a slide and nothing frightening either. It's the antidote to modern over tyred drivers cars in a way the GT86 wanted to be, but for me wasn't.
Still fun to watch you Matt. Even though you can't buy one, most of us couldn't afford one anyway. I wonder at what age point Matt's gonna start growning a lot when he has to get in and out of a tight back seat 😂 instead of the BMW, wouldn't you get a Supra or maybe Lexus sport?
@@lawnmower6591 true but a car like this is kind of like a sports car that the average person can afford yet they making it a limited run kinda seems counter productive
It's because of safety regulations in Europe. I think next year all cars need to have auto emergency breaking and to fit it in the gr86 they need to change the whole thing which is not worth it. Maybe now that UK exited Europe, they might sell it again.
Many 'Petrolhead' always talk shit about Toyota 86 for being 4 cylinder and 'slow'. Those people don't understand the fun driving car that not overwhelmingly fast but have a nice handling. It is fun. Driving slow car fast is more fun than driving fast car slow.
I feel like this is the car that car enthusiasts like myself have been waiting for forever. Reasonably lightweight and compact to enjoy on the road, an NA engine, just the right amount of power, RWD with a limited slip diff, a great manual gearbox, good reliability and a reasonable price in the grand scheme of things. But you can't buy one in the UK because they only allocated 400 or so cars and EU crash regs won't allow it to sell for more than 2 years here anyway. It's possibly the saddest story for perfect petrolhead car.
Not a car person here so genuinely wondering, why is a car like this preferable without a turbo? If pretty much the only point is to go fast, wouldnt a turbo be a nice thing to have?
@coreldan. The gr86 is more oriented around fun rather than speed, NA engines has a better throttle response than turbo engines and it doesn't muffle the sound unlike turbo engines
@@core_fin Just to add to the other comment, they also rev out more which is always really satisfying to hear an engine rev for longer and higher before changing gear and hearing it all over again. It's more exciting.
actually i did watch the development behind GR Yaris and the GR Yaris got development with Subaru too, Subaru made that gearbox and transfercase for GR Yaris so they can fit TSS(Toyota Safety Sense) like the safety system and adaptive cruise control for manual gearbox, so why Subaru didn't made one for BRZ or GR86?
At 13:03 that thing with the gear-changing at the red light, is exactly what I do in my MX-5! Haha! Brilliant! Wouldn't have it any other way than the manual!
100%, only 500 units or so for the UK. They said they would sell them for 2 years but nobody knew that it was a case of such limited numbers. Wonder how many of them will be flipped.
@@purwantiallan5089 that's cuz of the incredibly high import duties in thailand for imported vehicles. people end up paying more than twice the car's original MSRP just on taxes.
The one new car I actually considered owning. Shame they've all sold out but I was a fan of the old gt86 and managed to get a test drive of one of those when I was 18.
So as Toyota, the biggest car company of the world, you develop a brilliant car. You pay developing cost, invest in manufacturing cost and have a high demand. But you only deliver a few thousands cars to Europe…thats fine
@@Kostas_Dikefalaios yeah but when it comes to trade relations nobody cares about europe as a continent, its about europe as a trading partner for japan. So we have to talk about the European Union and thats probably the reason the UK didnt get any cars.

Yet to see the new brz on the roads here in Dubai. Quite rare I suppose
After a looong time, we have got a glimpse of the original Matt Watson, what a treat it was!
Hmm... the car was called an 86 because of the perfectly square engine. 86mm stroke and 86mm bore. So with the new engine, it's not really an 86, but is the best 86 ever 😃
its homage to the ae86
What ? 😂
nope, 86 stroke x 86 bore equals about 500cc x4 = 2000cc and old 86 was 1600cc, 86 means year 1986
@killercivic the GT 86 I'm talking about is the version of this car that was launched a few years back. It's a 2 litre motor. 86mm bore and stroke. It used the Subaru boxer motor. The 1.6 was from a long time ago.
Best review anywhere for this car. I've had the joy of a drive in one. Maybe the most playful car I've ever experienced.
Hi Poff, did you drive the GT86? How do they compare?
@@poff9345 interesting, thank you for the response Poff.
Just totaled mine, was a great car though. 10/10 Would buy again
Speak for yourself, plenty of us can afford one actually
@@harric9864 Even if we can, why be such a knob about it?
@@Ssh52 no more of a knob by being able to afford it than making sweeping statements of saying no one can
@@harric9864 Except that they didn’t say that.
The series 2 Bmw may be better but the main dealers where I live are bloody awful
Don’t understand why Toyota limits production of cars like this … I mean if you want money and want to make consumers happy just keep them coming
I guess it makes it a synthetic sense of demand, keeping the car more sought out.
@@lawnmower6591 true but a car like this is kind of like a sports car that the average person can afford yet they making it a limited run kinda seems counter productive
@@lawnmower6591 Just like Rolex!
It's because of safety regulations in Europe. I think next year all cars need to have auto emergency breaking and to fit it in the gr86 they need to change the whole thing which is not worth it. Maybe now that UK exited Europe, they might sell it again.
Finally Toyota made the GT86 they should have made from the start. Pretty decent 0-60 in the wet.
12:53 BRUH That small detail where the gear lever lights up the current selected gear that's so clean!
A dude in my neighborhood has one. It’s just awesome looking man
Kakapo are native and only found in NZ. They’re really cool, I hope we don’t lose them 😊
GR86 still lacks power compared to even BRZ.

I was waiting this Mat’s review more than everything
Many 'Petrolhead' always talk shit about Toyota 86 for being 4 cylinder and 'slow'. Those people don't understand the fun driving car that not overwhelmingly fast but have a nice handling. It is fun. Driving slow car fast is more fun than driving fast car slow.
I’d love one. Perhaps they’ll allocate more in ‘23. EVO magazine rated this right at the top on their awards, too!
Regarding automatic cruise control, it's because the Yaris is a Toyota and the GR86 is a Subaru.
actually i did watch the development behind GR Yaris and the GR Yaris got development with Subaru too, Subaru made that gearbox and transfercase for GR Yaris so they can fit TSS(Toyota Safety Sense) like the safety system and adaptive cruise control for manual gearbox, so why Subaru didn't made one for BRZ or GR86?
It took me a few months to get mine and I must say I've never been happier
Fidgeting with the gear knob is absolutely right for manual car owners.Dont know why, but the hand just reaches for it
At 13:03 that thing with the gear-changing at the red light, is exactly what I do in my MX-5! Haha! Brilliant! Wouldn't have it any other way than the manual!
The GR86 v Mazda MX-5 could be interesting to watch, Joel.
I just ordered mine in that blue Premium trim.

100%, only 500 units or so for the UK. They said they would sell them for 2 years but nobody knew that it was a case of such limited numbers. Wonder how many of them will be flipped.
@@philiphawkins4684 those cars are considered rare even on Thailand.
@@purwantiallan5089 that's cuz of the incredibly high import duties in thailand for imported vehicles. people end up paying more than twice the car's original MSRP just on taxes.
Yeah there's some for sale on auto trader if you don't mind paying a bit extra

Agree. Along with Subaru Impreza 22B STi.
I may be wrong, but I think the engine is not physically bigger, just stroke/bore ratio has changed.
Id love to see Mat review an MX5!
Or Skyline GTR 1971??
Toyota with the 86s, MKVs, LFA.
Thank you Toyota for releasing sports cars for us enthusiast. Be it manual or auto, keep it coming!!
I think it the EU that has f*"**d it for us. Not Toyota not wanting to sell cars.
UK isnt EU anymore:D
@@DAWEED99He said Europe not EU
@@Kostas_Dikefalaios yeah but when it comes to trade relations nobody cares about europe as a continent, its about europe as a trading partner for japan. So we have to talk about the European Union and thats probably the reason the UK didnt get any cars.
@@DAWEED99 But the car is also sold out in the EU. Germany was sold out after one week in april last year. You still cant even order it.

As do I. I originally had a hard budget of $A 20k for my next car because I didn't want to get a loan. I took one for a test drive and just NEEDED one. I am now in debt for the first time in my life and I have never been happier. All do is find ANY excuse to drive it.
