    Yesterday, Ida Haendel passed away. She was a legendary violinist and a dear friend of mine. I’m immensely grateful I had the chance to know and work with her closely. She will be dearly missed.

    After performing the Sibelius concerto at Helsinki in 1949, Ida Haendel received the following letter from Sibelius: "You played it masterfully in every respect. I congratulate myself that my concerto has found an interpreter of your rare standard."

      And this comes from someone who would know! Anyone who hasn't heard this gentleman's playing should definitely check it out.
      (I heard you play the Beethoven with the Harrisburg Symphony about ten years ago. It was spectacular; I knew you'd be moving on to bigger and better things.)

    Bravo Ida. RIP. Fabulous violinist. Beautiful and artistic playing. No swooning, knee-dipping playing. No, she played like the goddess she was. Like a magnificent statue. Calm, cool, and collected. What a gift.

      Very true. All these goofy people who constantly emote and move around - lunging, dipping, tip-toe'ing, swaying....I hate seeing performances like those. Most of them don't make music, they just put on a show. Of course you don't want to be totally frozen, you have to let the audience know that you're human, but not to excess.

    No one has ever equalled Ida Haendel's performance of the Sibelius. Incredible tone. Incredible double stopping. Capturing the essence of this composition masterpiece. One of the great Violin Concertos.

    Brilliant interpretation. Sibelius said that of all he had heard, to date, Haendel's interpretation of his violin concerto was as he imagined it should be.

    It's not hard to see why Sibelius himself was captivated by Ida's performance of his own concerto - this is breathtaking, from the amazing emotional touch she has to the marvelous technique! She was amazing! May she rest in piece.

    One of the best, if not the very best, performance of Sibelius violin concerto ever realized. I love her elegant, sophisticated and yet powerfull sound. Totally mesmerizing.

    Vengerov's Sibelius has always been my favorite, but my God, Haedel's interpretation is wonderful. What an artist she was. Beautiful.

    Franz-Paul Decker was my boss, and my first experience hearing Ida Haendel was in 1990 under his baton. I'd never heard her before and was absolutely mezmerized... a violinist comparable only to David Oistrakh, with a tone, a discipline, a mastery of phrasing and control of rhythm like no one else.

    Ida Haendel is the reason I switched from piano to violin. I studied piano and played for over 35 years and then I switched to violin little over a year ago. Ida Haendel's bowing inspired me - her bow is always perfectly balanced - I pretty much learned how to bow because of her!

    He heard her play the concerto with the Finnish Radio Orchestra in Helsinki in 1949, and wrote her a congratulatory letter (reprinted in the booklet of her live 1993 Proms CD of the concerto on Testament with Simon Rattle). They also spoke on the phone but never met as she had to leave Finland for another concert.

    I find this performance unsettling. It's so unlike any other interpretation of the Sibelius I've heard. Just when you think you know what's going to happen it all changes. That's part of the beauty of it.

    I remember watching a documentary for a class in which she was in. She was not the main subject of the film, but there was violin playing throughout from various people-when she played her violin I legit got chills from her performance. Absolutely incredible.

    What a wonderful player Ida Haendel is! This is such a great concerto and her interpretation is very subtle brings out the mysterious almost spooky qualities which are so characteristic of much of Sibelius's music! ONe of the best versions I have heard. Thank you for posting.

    As I sat here, watching and listening, I was like a deer caught in the headlights. Masterful. And I've never seen a soloist at the back of an orchestra before. Fascinating placement. Plus, there was so much space between the conductor and the orchestra. Why was that? RIP, Ms. Haendel.

    She recorded the Sibelius with Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony in the 1980s. Incomprehensibly it's never been re-released on CD yet for me Haendel's extraordinary interpretation matched with Berglund's unrivalled affinity with Sibelius makes the definitive reading of this concerto. Do seek it out if you can...

    She tells a story when she plays, she gives everything meaning.
    I can't help but imagine that during the sad part of the song where she sheds a tear that perhaps in that moment she becomes a girl again and is remembering all of the good memories of her mom and dad starting at nothing but filled with so much love to support her and so happy to see where she is today.

    I feel like there are too many popularized videos on RUclips with Ida when she was 75+ years when she was clearly past her prime (it's just a fact). More people should see her performances like these. They are breathtaking.

      @@mathersdavid5113 yes she wanted to perform but should have stick to a few pieces and practiced still. She didn’t. She relied on her reputation. If she’d have still practiced she’d have still been awesome. She became lazy. I knew her personally and she was happy to be lazy. She loved entertaining and socialising. I think she saw herself as had a great career and having a second career.

      I got to hear her play in the late 90s in a small venue in Friday Harbor, WA. I remember her playing brought tears to my eyes! It was so beautiful. To hear someone of that ability left me speechless. She truly was born to play.

    I’m ashamed to say I’ve never herd of Ida Haendel. From an unknown (to me) her interpretation of Sibelius’s violin concerto has become my favourite. Her sound is mesmerizing. On my second viewing…

    I just discovered her via this first video of her playing. My first thought after a minute or two was “she has the tone and passion of Gitlis” ,one of two favorite violinists of all times. She has now joined my group of three favorites (Kreisler is the other).

    Need not to say anything..... Sibelius praised her interpretation himself when he heard it on radio...describing it as masterfully played and of rare standard....according to wikipedia(search about the concerto)

    She performed the concerto in Helsinki in 1949 when she was 21, earing high praise from Sibelius. This is among the slowest tempi available, if not the slowest. I still like Oistrakh best with Heifetz a close second.

    Hi Probably the greatest woman violonist in all time despite she was not known from the large public and the advertising (like Heifetz). Between the death of G Neveu and the arrival of AS Mutter and H Hahn she was the only great And when we heard her violon today, she seems the best, with a global approach like Oïstrakh or Perlman.
