Honestly, don't worry you're not alone. I pretty much had the same background. Fully-blooded Korean who grew up in the Philippines. I just had to "re-culture" myself back to Korea for a few years, but then you realize that you're a foreigner wherever you go and that's not necessarily a bad thing :) It's nice to find someone who's similar. I wish I spoke more Tagalog like you tho haha

Juwonee, I kind of feel that you are like a much younger version of me. I, too, am a Korean but I was born and raised in Canada. On top of that I lived in the US for 20 years. I’m over 50 years old now.
I have only visited Korea once in my life when I was 20 years old. But I did visit the Philippines about 6 years ago. My wife is a Filipina who lived in Calamba.
I used to be self conscious about my very poor Korean language skills. It was due to the fact that in 1970’s there were hardly any Koreans in Canada at that time. I also went boarding school similar to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. I was the first Korean ever to attend my school. Now, the school has many Koreans. But the school boarding experience caused me to spend time away from my parents where I would have learned Korean much better.
My one piece of advice is that you have to feel comfortable about who you are and your upbringing. I think the different circumstance that your time in the Phil’s brings so much richness in your life and it can bring richness in other Koreans living Korea.
Just be comfortable with yourself but if you want to improve your Korean don’t be afraid to reveal yourself to Korean society and I think for the most part people will be helpful to you.
Good luck in your journey and I look forward to seeing how much you grow as a human being during this time.

You're the most entertaining Filipino-Korean youtuber! I've been a fan of the other popular K-youtubers in PH (Jessica , Dasori, Ryan, Silvia, etc), but none of them can speak as good as you in Tagalog and in Filipino English, and an awesome sense of humor to boot. You are a Filipino-Korean, while the rest is Korean-Filipino, you know what I mean? Keep vlogging...about anything!!

Keep safe!

The way you speak. The way you move. The nuances, slangs, vocabulary, your intonations, and so on, no one would think you're a Korean expat. Everything is so Filipino, even your reactions.
As for no longer being confident with your native language, that's normal. Even Filipinos who migrated abroad when they were very young are the same. When it comes to language, the less we use a language, the faster we forget it. And the best way to keep our knowledge of a language is to talk with someone in the same language; or read a lot.
    ^_^

I spent 10 years in Cavite so when my family and I moved back to my mom's hometown in the Visayas, I struggled a lot with the language. Fast forward to several decades later and I can't express myself in Filipino with much confidence anymore 😅I tend to think, speak and write in English and Hiligaynon (mostly English since I teach the language). Kaya awkward pag napunta ko ng Manila kase hirap talaga ko mag express in Tagalog ng straight. 😅

I can totally understand where you're coming from. In my case I was born and raised in the philippines but since im part chinese I had to learn basic Hokkien, Mandarin and Canto on top of learning English and Tagalog. It was very confusing for me as a kid!
Then when i turned 15 my entire family immigrated to canada which then added another language for me to learn (french) just to make my life harder lol
To sum it up, learning different languages is completely different from speaking it daily. Similar to what you mentioned, na its hard to keep up with the trends.
I can speak, understand and communicate a little in these languages pero not fluently kasi when you add variables like, tone, speed of delivery, accent, dialects it raises the level of difficulty to a whole new level!
and to add to the difficulty, every language follows its own sentence structure!
    ie:
English: Sentence = subject + predicate
Japanese: Sentence = Subject + Object + verb
French, Cantonese, mandarin: Sentence = Subject + verb + object
Kung i-rrank ko yung fluency ko it would be:
    1. English - highest
    2. Tagalog
    3. French
    4. Canto
    5. Mandarin
    6. Hokkien

Gurl, feel ko yung hesitation mo on speaking korean. Like may pacing ka, like you're processing it before letting it out. Curious though, in what language do you think? like Filipino or English? This is one way to understand and process different languages eh. :) But it isn't something to be shy about. Knowing 2-3 Languages is an excellent skill to have! it shows the level of analysis and skill a person has.

I've been watching your videos and I find it very amazing that, for a foreigner, you speak Filipino well. I mean, every nuance of the language. Di halata na hindi ka pala native Filipino with the way you speak both Filipino and English. I dare say you don't even deserve to be called a "foreigner" for being quite Filipino in the psyche and for having the very Filipino trait of smooth multilingual code-switching (between Filipino, English, Korean and back again).
Actually, I'm learning a bit of the Korean language since my senior high school times when I started getting hooked to K-drama and a "decent" dose of K-pop (as a music-intensive type of listener, not the "fan"/"stan" type). But my interest in the Korean language went beyond just for the sake of being able to comprehend the dramas or variety shows I watch or the songs I listen to. It became learning the language for the sake of the language. Like, I really just want to learn Korean up to the conversational level just like my Waray (my mother tongue), Filipino and English. It amazed me how relatively easy it is to read and understand Korean compared to other Asian languages since it is alphabet-based like my three main languages. My interest in Korean even extended to delving into its linguistic history, especially etymology and how to speak in Middle Korean which is the ancient form of Korean spoken in the peninsula during the Joseon dynasty (I can even recite from memory the preamble to the Hunminjeong-eum). But my learning is a bit slow since I have a lot on my plate as a college student (in meteorology). I'm not yet conversational, and I'm just casually building my grammar and vocabulary by watching and listening to more Korean-language content.
Anyway, it's very heart-warming listening to your stories and sharing in this channel. I wish you all the best, Ms. Juwon! 화이팅! 💙
P.S. I dunno if you'll be able to read this comment since I posted this under a months old video, but I would like to ask: what is your full name written in Hanja? I just wanna try "converting" it from modern Korean to Middle Korean. 😂
P.S.S. It sucks how I wrote all about myself in a long ass (2nd) paragraph when the comment was supposed to be about you. 😅

you are like me. I can speak filipino, bisaya. But since living in Australia most of my life (after 10years old). My dominant language is english. My exposure to filipino (language, especially bisaya) are limited. IT's so hard to bring it out. You know the saying, it's on the tip of my tongue? well, mine is it's on the tip of my brain (just before the tip of my tongue) hahaha. but once it gets going - at least with filipino. I"m OK. with bisaya. I think I've lost it - not as fluent.

    Im a Filipino from SouthernPhilippines.
Your #Tagalog #Filipino is way better than mine and im a Filipino native, i lived my entire life in the Philippines, my goodness! . Im speaking mostly dialects from #Southern_Philippines. Though, i speak Tagalog fluently enough to sustain a convo but sometimes i have to prior think about the word to speak, its like translating my dialect into Tagalog that it takes seconds.

those people who ask you to speak Korean, please don't mind them. Like Chinese who settled here in the PH and were raised here, not all of them are fluent in Chinese. so please don't pressure yourself. Like my mom who is half Chinese. She never really spoke Chinese, not even a bit. so again PLEASE DON'T PRESSURE yourself. Be comfortable in your own skin

The common observation i see from other koreans who moved out of korea at a very young age and eventually grew up in a different country, is that they remain fluent in hangugeo. The way they speak, however, seem to have stopped growing along with their personality. They are familiar with more complex korean diction and sentence patterns, but when they talk, they naturally revert back to the most basic subject-verb-object srelationships. So when they converse in korean, its like talking with a korean child, even if they’re in their 20-30’s. Do you find yourself doing the same?

Pro tip kapag di alam ang spelling: I use Google Translate o Papago, sinasabi ko out loud yung word/s. Tapos lalabas na yung spelling. :) I'm currently learning 3 languages na iba't-iba ang alphabets so it helps a lot. :)
