I can relate so much with your struggles. My parents are Korean and I was born in PH. Lived here for 20 years. I've grown up speaking in Korean with my parents, study english in school, and talk Eng-Filipino with Filipino friends. It's quite frustrating sometimes but at the end of the day, I feel blessed. :)

    • Juwonee can be classified as Tagalog based on her tongue and grassroot culture.
    • Filipinos believe and uphold tongue (dialect) and grassroot culture (social mindset they embrae), not race, in determining native class. Eg, an Ilocano father (northerner) and Cebuano mother (Southerner) can have Tagalog children.
    • Juwonee is an ethnic Korean. ✔️
Juwonee is Tagalog by tongue and grassroots. ✔️
Juwonee is therefore a Tagalog- Korean. ✔️

Also, Tagalogs do not identify themselves as "Tagalog" but through their home province. Since Juwon is from Batangas, then she's a Batangueña.

Doesn't matter whether you identify as a Korean or a Filipino. You are special, you are exposed to different cultures growing up which means you have a greater understanding of others beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. You are more accepting and sensitive to different cultures. You are you and you are AWESOME.

3:04 Meteor Garden (2001) was the Taiwanese drama that is based on the Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers), which also spawned a Japanese drama and Korean drama of the same name, Chinese remake of Meteor Garden, and a Thai version of Boys Over Flowers. Meteor Garden was integral to the boom of the popularity of Asianovelas in the Philippines.
The cast of the 2001 Meteor Garden went on to be popular boy band in Asia using their group name from the manga F4 as their band name, until they had to change it to JVKV, the initialisms of each of the member's names (Jerry, Vic, Ken, Vaness) due to copyright issues with Shueisha, the copyright holder of Hana Yori Dango. One of their most notable songs was the Mandarin version of "Can't Help Falling in Love" recorded for the Asian version of the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack.

100% agree with you regarding language. My close friend grew up in Iligan and her mother tongue is Cebuano/Bisaya. She's fluent in Tagalog, English, and Cebuano, but to this day, sometimes she still has to stop and think, how to translate some words in Tagalog. e.i. the word Puhon. You'll hear this to most cebuano speaker but there's no one exact word that directly translate this in Tagalog. Puhon means God willing somewhat like Inshallah in Arabic.

Here in Canada white people coming from all parts if the world support and so kind of each other; however you see Asians still discrminates each other. One example, the whiter the Asian skin is the more it is being applauded. My two cents here, we Asians should love our diversity and be proud of our ethnicity so no caucasian people could discriminate us.

Hi, Juwon, I understand where you’re coming from. I’m a Filipina born & raised here in the U.S. and MUCH older than you (hoy, I’ll be 60 soon!). I don’t speak Tagalog regularly, pero naintindihan ko kasi my parents spoke to us in Tagalog but did not enforce that we answer in Tagalog, so English ang sumagot ko. And it doesn’t help that I inherited my great-grandfather’s Chinese looks (ang mga Pinoy sinasabi maliit ang mata ko pero I tell them Pinoy ang ilong ko, look, look!) so people don’t identify me as Pinay. “You’re Chinese, right? Or Japanese or Korean, or .” Heck, they’ll even guess Hawaiian BEFORE FINALLY guessing Filipino! 😂 An elderly Chinese woman even yelled at me for not speaking Chinese because she said, “Oh, you are Chinese, you need to speak Chinese!” 😮 The “Taga saan ka?” question pops up a lot when I speak to older Filipinos (yung mga titas, titos, nanays, etc.), then having to explain I was born in the States and then identify where my parents came from in P.I., it’s a lot to explain and I have to do it EVERY TIME. And not being 100% fluent in Tagalog, speaking Taglish is my only option when speaking to my “countrymen”. Are they even my countrymen? Since all my cousins, aunts & uncles live in P.I. and are Filipino, can I claim mga Pinoy as my countrymen? Are the U.S. people my countrymen? I’m sure you see my quandary. Anyhoo, I enjoy your videos, I can identify with them, you speak much better Tagalog than I can, and I love hearing you speak Tagalog/Filipino-style English/Korean, it makes me smile and want to be with my extended family there. Don’t get discouraged, you are a gem!

Also when people ask you where you are from, we get the same thing here in America. I usually tell them I'm from California or San Francisco but they actually mean where are you REALLY from. Here in America that would be considered casual racism as Asians are looked at as perpetual foreigners and can't be born and raised here.

You ARE Filipino. Many Chinese in Binondo have strong Chinese Blood, yet because they grew up in the Philippines, AND also follow many Filipino customs and traditions, speak Pilipino language, in addition to the Chinese ways, they ARE Filipino. Of course they also have Filipino citizenship many being 2nd and 3rd generation Chinoys, where their Parents or Grandparents were the first immigrants who chose to opt for Filipino citizenship. . Ang kulang mo nalang is to choose to apply for Filipino Citizenship if you like. Some examples of people who chose to become Filipino citizens even if they have no drop of Filipino blood are Basel Manadil(Hungry Syrian Wanderer Channel) and Kyle Jennerman(Becoming Filipino channel). You do have to consult with a lawyer regarding this.

Among us Filipinos, we can relate to the issue of national identity as well. Filipinos also are sometimes mistaken abroad for being Malaysian, Thailander, even a South Korean. One of my college history teacher most of the time is mistaken for a South Korean. She speaks Ilonggo and comes from the West Visayas area. A Thai driver would speak Thai to me in Thailand and I have to smilingly say I am a Filipino because we looked like them. What's more surprising are the Filipinos with Caucasian blood because they look like a Westerner and even Filipinos would be surprised that the guy speaks Bisaya. 'Day Juwonee, be proud being a UP grad. Strike anywhere ka. UP grads are like bamboo. They are very resilient and flexible. Ma-diskarte.

You can be both Filipino or Korean as you’re Korean by birth and Filipino for your upbringing. I’d say to just shrug them off and just be who you want to be.
I get a lot of contradicting comments too as I’m Filipino but I look more Chinese and some instances people tend to talk to me in Mandarin or other Chinese dialects and asked a lot of irritating questions 😂

    imo you're filipino. filipino isn't a race/ethnicity. it's a nationality.
the ph is a place where there are many different races and mixed races live in, and they're all pinoy. ex. full blooded chinese citizens are considered filipino, and fil-chinese as a subset of filipino. personally, i'd consider you fil-korean. same way i'm fil-chinese.
'cuz there's no absolute answer to what the "filipino race" is. some will say it's the malays, some will say the aetas, etc etc., but then you have the filipinos that have intermixed through the centuries. so "filipino" is more a term for a nationality nowadays. and that nationality encompasses many different races.

There's a line from a American TV sitcom that says "We are stuck between two worlds, part of both, belonging to neither". It's a story about a taiwanese-american family who also felt the same way as you do. They felt that they didn't belong to either country . Nagka-identity crisis din sila. I think that it shouldn't matter if you are korean or a filipino, why choose one when you can have the best of both worlds..oh di ba..hannah montana lang ang peg hehe. Anyways, nice to hear your thoughts. You really seem like a fun person with depth.
