42 years on my shovel and still lovin it
Very few can say that..👍👍👍
Bought my 77 flh new and still have it
Have had my 1983 FXWG since new. Love the Shovelhead motor on it. Easy to maintain to me.
That is saying something that you still own the same bike...not many can say that..👍👍👍✌
A old shovel is alot like owning a VW beetle. Set the timing often. Adjust the valves often. Set the points often. Its a labor of love.
My dad passed when I was a teenager and I got his old shovel. I rode the crap out of it and one day it died at a red light. I was kicking like crazy. This cool old dude in a van pulled over opened his back doors and helped me push it in. Took me home and spent several hours educating me on the bike. Timing. Valves. All kinds of shit. By the time he left that sucker was firing on the first kick. I never seen him again after that. I’m pretty sure it was Jesus. True story tho
@@Scummy_shovel Motor Jesus is a real entity. Many years ago I bought a 72 Triumph Daytona.Decided I would ride it to Daytona.Got just to the middle of Louisiana and it completely died. No cell phone service at that time.I spent 2 days not knowing what to do. Finally a dude with a pickup truck pulling a trailer that had TRIUMPH painted on it.He ask me where I was going.Told him I was trying to get to Daytona. He told me If I helped his wife selling T shirts at his booth in Daytona he would fix my bike to get me home.Dude filled my stomach and my brain with knowledge. I believe as you do he was Jesus.
Verdow has been in FtMyers for YEARS! If ya have an OG Harley that's the place to go. Thanks to the ol man Howard (RIP) For introducing me to Squirrel.
Started on a Flathead, then scored a Shovel Loved that bike even took her to West Germany when I was in the service. Then I inherited a Blockhead from a Brother who's time came way sooner then he should have. 32 years later I have to tell ya it truly was an evolution. Love them Shovels but I aint ever giving up my Blockhead! Choppers for Life!
I have been enjoying your content. I love the fact that you portray the real "Old School Biker" Not the Times magazine character that has plagued the Harley Davidson community for decades. Every real/old school biker I have met or ridden with are good hearted, goofy and fun loving guys. Even when I was riding old Honda's and getting into motorcycles the "Old Harley Guys" still had respect for the fact that I was on two wheels. Had stories of the days they too rode on New in their day Hondas and were building choppers out of them. In a time of fostering social division, motorcycles are truly unifying. Old, Young, Red, blue Elephant or Ass. We are all the same when cracking the throttle and a smile. Keep it up!
Thank you Casey, great comment...really appreciate it..👍✌
Digging the jig at the end.your Sombrero and flip-flops really set the bar high for any RUclipsr to emulate 😊.
Bought my shovel new in " 77 " and just about got it tweaked in !!!
Cool Dude! I'm a 62 model myself. Hell we had to pick up bottles along the side of the road to take down to the river store to sell just to get a cold drink or did in the couch cushion where dad sat hoping to find some change. There was no such thing as an allowance for doing chores just a good ass whooping if they did not get done. Like the content Brother, finally a man's channel not sure about the Hawaii shirts though. LOL
Go Shovelheads! I have a 79 FLH 80ci modified with 2" phase 3 open belt drive, Morris mag, foot clutch and jockey shift, bare bones, no battery, no key, Mad Max machine. I have made many special parts through the years as I worked in the machine shop. I purchased it new in 1980 from Buds HD in Evansville, IN. $4,200.
Squirrel is the shit. Gotta like a guy who does what he says. So you're rockin now.🤙
He is and he does, and he kinda likes us, which doesn't happen often..😁
Damn brother that is one fine looking engine can't wait for the finished bike keep them coming I'll keep watching ride safe my brother
Thanks Edilio, Man he did a great job on that motor...plus a 6 month guarantee. 👍👍👍
This video does NOT suck...My .02 cents....
Thanks Flash really appreciate the comment..👍👍👍✌

Love the videos bro. I have a 1980 FXB Sturgis Special, love my old shovelhead. Cheers 🍻
Nice to see you doing community service cleaning up the road ditches. That helmet looks pretty bad but we don't know how bad the truck looks like that hit him. I don't know if the Shovelhead was the best motor but it sounds better then Evoheadffej. Another great video.
Thanks Rob, for me imho..evo most dependable, shovel best sounding and looking...👍✌
I am in a 3 piece club. And I wear a full face helmet. Protect your brain kids
I have several full face helmets as well as real DOT skid lids...once I leave my rural area, it's on, or if I'm test riding a bike..I know I'm a super bad example but as I get older I seem to wear it more and more...✌👍
Don't know where you live but we ride year round full face is The way to go
My dad always said. “If ya have a 3$ head. Wear a 3$ helmet”. I figure I have about a $580 head. But I am guilty of just cruising around with my little brain bucket that’s far from dot
@@joethompson61half helmet just feels so much more free
Passion beyond all reason. Got to respect the love shovelhead guys have for their bikes because I know it can be mind twisting exercise in frustration keeping one of these running down the road..not for those who just want to ride....it should be kick, ride, REPAIR, repeat.
Passion beyond all reason is 100% true..🤦♂️😁✌
That dude does some good work. We will get yo. to 10,000 and beyond!!
And he's super fast...👍thanks Newenglandbiker..✌
Had a '83 Tour Glide for 14 years and never gave me a bit of trouble! But it did mark it's spots, but in my opinion, The EVO motor is just as reliable and doesn't leak oil. I've had this old'99 Heritage Softail for quite awhile and never had a bit of trouble either.
I love the Evo, imo evo's were the last rebuildable and rider friendly motor HD made...✌
Love the shovelheads, but the evo's are just darn bulletproof.
I am 83 years old. My first Harley was a 1942 "45" flat head when I was 14 in 1955. Before that it was Whizzer motor bikes and Cushman motor scooters. My current ride is a 99 Softail Custom EVO powered. I have ridden a few shovel heads, and they are great motors. I have never owned one. I did ride an 84 Iron Head Sportster for 23 years. To me the EVO is the last of the simplicity of the V Twin. Not quite a shovel, but pretty darn close. Just my opinion though. I loved that old Flat Head also. No powerhouse but super fun to ride. Foot clutch hand shift is nothing for a 14 year old who is stupid enough to believe he can ride anything. I never had a problem with it from the first day. I never new any difference until I rode an early Triumph with a hand clutch and right side shifter. No problem.
At 83 I love the simplicity of the EVO. No rubber mounts on the Softail. You still get to feel the motor and listen to the drag pipes while watching the sun reflect of the head light. When I get home my wife says, you had a good time. She knows what it does for my disposition when I walk in with a big smile on my face.
Anyway, great video.
Thanks Jim, agree 100% about the EVO's...would really love to have a flathead...glad you're still out here riding...I really appreciate you watching and commenting...👍✌️
I have owned three down thru the years.Pans and Shovels were current when I was riding them.We modded them with changing the front sprocket as well as the rear sprocket to get it out of that vibration mode at sixty to sixty five.Cammed them up with Andrews cams. They ran pretty good!I chaged the front sprocket to a 24 and the rear to a 46.It went down the hiway pretty good!
I like the shovelhead looks nice.but not show bike nice.looks like a ridden motor.if that makes sense.ride on ride safe
I love rusty and crusty myself...thanks for the shout out on my giveaway on your Channel....👍👍👍✌
@@shovelheadffej you’re welcome Sir. I say mine is a go bike not a show bike.
I I'm 69 years old. I write a 59 FL H withe 1972 shovel heads. I would really like to see. On how to rebuild the lower end and balance the wheels. In my opinion the best year for shovel head was nineteen sixty nine And didn't have that big gap of aluminum hang off the left side With the alternator and all that john came out there And it look prettier
I've had my 75 FLH since 1980. I never gave alot of thought to the work I did on it
I can and I have completely rebuild my bike a couple times(Michigan winters). The one thing about working on my bike is I know at all times what condition it's in. When I twist the wick on my ride I'm confident.
Hot damn, Shovelheads and Surf music...what could be better?
#sorrybud .... but the Evolution engine is the best engine that Harley ever produced. And by "best" I mean the simplest design possible, infinitely rebuildable and maintained with (mostly) hand tools (by the owner of the bike), litany of aftermarket parts and support.....and sadly the Shovelheads (like ironheads) can expand/contract significantly from cold-operating temperature...
Every engine after the Evo...was just the complication of a simple and efficient design...
Exhibit A: As the EPA deemed the Evo's camchest was "too noisey" and produced "Audio Pollution " (like from the movie Ferngully) the Twin cam and its time 💣 of a timing chain tensioner was conceived and brought to the assembly line.
Love you channel BTW... thanks for sharing
I agree on the evo,...I was trying not to say the sexiest motor on the title...didn't want to get flagged...the eco the best, for me shovels are just purdy...Thanks..✌👍
@shovelheadffej " theres no account for taste" as they say. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've always had a fondness for theb esthetics of Knuckleheads but wouldn't trade one for the performance and reliability of my Evo. However Ive atleast a bakers dozen of buddies that are that are in full codependent relationships with their Shovels
I so enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see that old shovelhead running. That is my favorite engine.
Thanks Joe, mine too..✌☝️
Some old sayings come to mind. One is "if ya got a $10 head. Wear a $10 helmet"! Point is, not sayin ya have to spend a fortune, but investment in a good helmet CAN save ur life!! Get one that is comfortable, and over time you will feel UNCOMFORTABLE if ur not wearin it!!! Keep up the good work FEEJ!! Look forward to your new "ADVENTURES"! Thanks for watching and commenting...👍
I tell ya. Maybe it’s just where I have shovels on the Brain lately. But I stared at that thumbnail for a few minutes until I finally noticed you in it lol.
Shovels are the best sounding Harley In my opinion. Plus they are so easy to work on and keep maintained and tuned in my experience with them. But I am a Evo FXR fan. Just can't help myself
Had a 91fxr still kicking myself in the ass for selling it it was bad ass
Awesome Video ... I have never owned a Shovelhead my first was a '93 FLHS Evo In the years since I have had a couples "Twinkies" '08 Crossbones & a '03 Fatboy. Today I sling a leg over a '96 FXSTC.
Fun helmets. My mother worked for Buco helmets back in the sixties. About the time I started riding my mother comes home with two new half helmets and asked me to wear one.(I said ok,but only one) she made those two helmets herself. She also gave men a Buco leather jacket. I wore the leather out but still have and still use the helmets.
Man, my mom has passed, if she had made me a helmet that would be with me till I'm done..👍✌️
My mother passed along time ago. And yes like you I plan on having them until ???. Thank you.
Lol “No homo” man it’s been awhile since I heard that 😂 Just subscribed and it’s awesome. Love the page brutha

Thanks Cas, retirement seems to be working out for you..great to travel...thanks for all the support you have given me.
Full face is the way to go… i have 36 titanium screws and 3 plates holding my lower jaw together now.
Damn FFEJ, I can't "unsee" that dance thing at the end...haha
The motor looks like it came out great and I'm going to keep Squirrels info in my list of bike repair guys, just in case.
I'm really looking forward to riding that bike I win around my neighborhood! Hug Ms. De De for me.
Peace, Eric in Kissimmee.
Something about when I put on that big sombrero...🕺🤣
Miss D's doing a great job behind the camera. I'm from the biggest and most isolated state in the world called Western Australia! Stretch is my name and I just brought a 2012 softail slim with 103 motor. Please let me know your opinion On this bike, only if you have time. Cheers Shovelhead you Rock man...
Thanks for the great comment, I have a 2011slim softtail and love it, just a fun bike to ride...probably never sell it..great bike..👍👍✌
love that shop in Ft. Meyers. I've had many a shovelhead and still do. when set up right and put together right they are reliable & run a long time. as far as the best eng the co. made, Evo's are my vote, but I'll still a shovel.
I like my 2020 lowrider have 63,000 miles on it very reliable.m8s are great way to go harley hitting 4 vales per cylinder.wow.
The surf music throughout the vid was most excellent, love it..
And I wear a Shoei full face, and wouldn't wear anything cheap to protect My dome. How much is Yer brain worth? Methinks it's worth a helluva lot more than the few hundo a quality helmet costs, if Ya gonna wear one.
I just stumbled across your channel and I like your style. I just subscribed. Have a good day man.
Who makes that engine stand? I need a couple of those. I built one that rotates but I could use a couple of those static stands.
That sportster is COOL!! Love that paint!
Thanks I have yet seen this color in the wild, only on the internet...✌👍
Sweet choppers on the stands in his shop. 😎👍
Well I now have two ironhead frames, a 79 and 73, and a 83 motor. I don’t need the 79 frame FFEJ so I remember you saying you need it, do you still need it? 79’ is the Bastard year, everything about that year is “ONLY” so being the poor dude I am, I can’t use it and won’t be able to because I just won’t! So let me know bruh!💯🇺🇸🏍️🙏🏻
The shovel is the first one that got me into Harley's in 1975 & without doubt in my mind the best looking engine HD ever built but the most reliable has got to be the 1200 evo.
100% agreed..👍✌
One of the coolest motor is shovel ...but not called trouble shovel for a reason....I have to old ironheads....
IMHO try to keep em stock do the maintenance change the oil and they're good to go
just got my rooster sticker from ffej & dede. very cool, hand written, thank you card. you must have dede writing them out because the penmanship is too neat for any guy i know. thank you
🤣🤣...I've kept the same penmanship since kindergarten...✌
I think the shovelhead motor is a sexy thing to look at, B.T.W. dude who repaired those busted fins on the heads is a genius🏆🇺🇲
I didn't get to meet the guy, but I'm bringing several things to him in a few weeks and I'm going to get his info
I have owned three shovels and I loved them, but get them up to speed on the hiway and they start sucking wind. The five speed FXR that I owned was better but still not very fast.
Couple daze late watching this video. Very cool thank you for sharing. Bell helmet. And good boots. My step dad taught me good
I watch your videos and I’m Chinese…Jeff😂😂😂
🤣...Damn...Should have said I have no subscribers viewing from china...😉✌...stick around I'll insult some other country next week..🤣
I thought the Evo was the best motor hd ever built! I ride a 96 twin and work on it often! So far so good, with 65,000 miles!
I have a 72 stroker shovel that runs like a cheetah. I've out run a lot of bikes that pulled up beside me after I whooped there ass and said, what the hell have you got in that thing.

Great question...Squirrel at Verdow Motorworks did the bottom end. That was way beyond my pay grade lol
here in kansas truett and osborne are the old school guys that were known for balanced flywheels that made those shovels pretty smooth bikes like your content
What is the story on setting valves ?
Bought a hat. About five minutes after i pressed the buy button someone threw it through my window. Awesome turn around time ffeJ.
🤣That's Mrs. Dede, she's on top of shipping...👍
Dam that’s a really quick turnaround time!!! How long did it actually take in real time? I don’t like to judge off of RUclips time. Does he offer to paint or powder coat the jugs for ya, or would you have had to go and get them done separately before he assembled it?
The whole thing took about 2 1/2 weeks...he shop stays busy but he gets stuff done...pretty much however you want it done and how you want it done,he'll do it...super easy guy to work with...
A friend of mine has a stroked Shovelhead he takes out now and then. He is up in age and says the thing scares him
1:53 music title? please tell me
Thats gonna run that chaff cutter machine like nothing else, because the EVO is the most reliable motor they ever built and thats a fact JACK
Evo is in my opinion the must reliable, but the shovel is the best looking...✌👍

Can youput evo top end ona shovel block
103 ci is too big for a shovel. You will have issues with starting it. Ask me how I know. The starter, Bendix, kicker gear, wiring, clutch and solenoid were not designed for that much compression and power. I had to downsize mine to 93ci by going with smaller pistons and jugs.
Breaking things is my Specialty. Been running this motor since the 90's...it's not for everyone...but not the most reliable
@@shovelheadffej I loved my bike when it was 103ci, when it started that is. The more you twist the throttle the more she would accelerate. It was a blast especially after inhaling some of the Devil's cabbage. My bike is 93ci now and still lots of fun. And it starts every time now. I can even kick start if required. King Kong couldn't kick start the 103ci. Maybe you can but I'm only about 160 lbs. Have fun my friend. Keep them shovels alive! I have 2 straight pipes and I'd like to connect them to have a 2 into 1 exhaust. Any ideas on how I can do that? I have STD heads which have the 3 bolt attachments so off the shelf exhausts are hard to find.

The best is a 1973 Aermacchi ss 350
No it's not. The shovelhead was good for the sixties but couldn't keep up. The Evo came out as a shovel on steroids that could hold together. The Evo saved Harley from going out of business, energized the whole motorcycle industry in general, and was one of the greatest engines ever to roll down the road of any kind.
So I guess you are going to keep that evo ignition. Been thinking of pulling my motor out and having gone through just for the peace of mind.

Anyone that says shovel is the best motor Harley made don’t ride there bike hard and is most definitely a mechanic to keep that thing running. Any real

To me the shovel is the most esthetically pleasing. In my younger years the evo was everything that was bad going on in the world...I own evos, I love Evos, I just love the shovel more...and yes I hammered on shovels till they broke and tried to fix the problem...they are what they are...older technology than the evo...✌
