    Sweet! My only concern is the fridge tilt. You really don't want to tilt refrigerators and AC units as you can contaminate the system and or starve the compressor of oil and burn it out. I would re-arrange and put the fridge lower in the vehicle. Anything to extend the life of a $7-800 appliance. I do like the swing out with the spare tire. I am currently putting mine on a diet and taking out all the old third row seat hardware and entertainment systems. The goal is to be as close to the factory weight as possible before pack out. "Dry weight" I guess you could say. Great job on providing the links!

    • @TRAILPOWER
      @TRAILPOWER  4 года назад

      Never had an issue with our Dometic and tilt-slide. Its never running beyond 35 degrees, so oiling should not be an issue. If we were running it on its side, that would be bad. Or if we rolled the truck, but that would be a whole other set of bigger issues. I'm always torn by the weight issue. It is top heavy with the tent, and causes me to avoid some extreme terrain I'd tackle in my Raptor- wide and relatively low center of gravity.

    Ive been modeling the drawers system I’m building for my 4th gen 4Runner off of your setup. Ive got to figure out how I’m going to tie it into the floor because I dont have an easy spot like the GX has to screw into the floor. Probably gonna have to drill a hole at some point... I really appreciate you posting this up with the link to the drawer slides and your process. As someone who hadn’t used a circular saw prior to this, it has been a great guide.

    Can I ask what MPG you are getting when loaded and doing a trip? Thats my main concern. I like the platform but a few years from now when I have experience (and serious money put into my platform) id like to take it to other countries where you might be long periods without gas. 4xoverland did a trip in oregon and he said he only got 10MPG and in his view disqualified the car from being a true overlander since when not in the US you will sometimes be very far from fuel.........

    • @csgofordummies1239
      @csgofordummies1239 4 года назад

      Actually better yet. The MPG has lead my down the rabbithole of payload. I feel like theres zero chance you arent at least 400lbs over payload if not more. No concerns there? I feel the GX is basically impossible to have a real overland build without being 30-40% over payload

    • @TRAILPOWER
      @TRAILPOWER  4 года назад

      @@csgofordummies1239 I haven't weighed our GX, but it certainly isn't light with full steel skid plates. It's built for 7 passengers, and we only have two, so that helps. And, payload is also largely tied to suspension. Our suspension is fully-custom with Fox and Icon, so factory payload numbers aren't exactly relevant.

    • @TRAILPOWER
      @TRAILPOWER  4 года назад +1

      A lot of GX drivers rely on the factory MPG readout for calculating fuel consumption. That's fine if you're running stock tires. If you're running 33's like we are, the MPG and speedometer are not accurate. OEM tires: 265/65/17 (660 revs/mile. Our tires: 285/70/17 (617 revs/mile). 7% faster, and 7% more miles covered than the GX thinks it has covered. Our GX MPG readout averages around 12.6-13.2 depending on the terrain. Multiplied by 1.07, we're right around 14MPG with rooftop tent, and fully-loaded.

    For me it seems the fridge system just takes up too much room. I've done some 4-5 day hikes without refridgeration. Trying to weigh what a smaller system would do for efficiency.

    • @TRAILPOWER
      @TRAILPOWER  Год назад

      This is a bigger fridge than most need. I went with a 65L because I was dual-purposing it. For the trail, and also as an emergency backup at home if the grid goes down.

    Did you have to upgrade the rear coils to avoid sag after putting all the extra weight in the back?

    • @TRAILPOWER
      @TRAILPOWER  4 года назад

      I run ICON Overland coils on the back, which are a heavier coil. Very happy with them, combined with the FOX shocks. I replaced the factory airbags before installing the storage system, so I don't know how it would do with the factory setup. I suspect it would be fine, because you're removing the weight of the rear jump seats, compressor, etc.
