I realize this video is old, but still a lot of clever little ideas that make it just more enjoyable to get out there
I love the thought that went into this system. Simple, practical and you could still use the cargo space to get groceries midweek. Most drawer systems I see on RUclips take up the entire cargo bay, and there’s nothing wrong with that approach... but that sleeping platform is a great idea!
What exactly is simple about this lol?
Genius brackets. Really dig the forward seat bracket mounts too. Thanks Michael, Parnell. Next level innovation.
Do you know where to buy the brackets?
Michael, you are one of about five overlanders on RUclips that I listen to and learn from. And you seem like a great guy also. Good job and hope you enjoy the hell out of your new system.
Nice build! Yet another really informative video produced by Overland Bound. You guys rock it! Thanks for sharing.
Everything functions so simple, yet we know it wasn’t easy to create. Awesome build! Shows what you can do when you take the time to think it through. Love it!
Bamboo is a great idea. I've got bamboo flooring in my lounge and it's extremely durable
Nicely done!! The finishing touches like custom bits and excellent routing give it a very polished look.
I didnt realize the 80 had ~75" of space behind the front seat. Thats capacious.
Thank you. Plan to build with my son and grandson
I put a gas strut on my F-250 tailgate, works great. Great build.
Very thoughtful of you and Parnel🥰
This work is stunning. Amazing, amazing job. Absolutely blown away
You need a tailgate shock that slows the tailgate as it drops. They work really well.
Great set up 👏🏼 I have a similar set up in my rig, much simpler but does the job and is very light. I positioned my fridge behind the passenger seat so I could have two big drawers at the rear. My sleeping platform folds up in about 10sec so it's no drama to access.
Truly nice and well thought out build. Parnale(sp?) is a true craftsman!!!🙌🏾 Thanks for sharing.
Some of the very best videos for overlanding. Period.
Hey Mikey! I liked it a lot. A very nifty piece of kit. I would still like for Parnell to build one for the 4Runner. Cheers, Mate.
Thanks Michael - great video update for us ‘Outback’ trekkers down here in South Australia - I presume bamboo is lighter than the usual plywood for the same thickness? Your ‘trucks’ are our ‘utes’ and mine is a Hilux dual cab with an aluminium canopy (with legs) - not sure if we can get bamboo here in Australia due to customs regulations - I will use aluminium and stainless steel materials with lockable drawer slides with lock levers at the front - John in SA
Hey John! Thanks for watching. Bamboo is actually pretty heavy. It’s durable and dense . Won’t delaminate. It’s good for routing and rounding edges to any shape. I love the Hilux! Spent some time in Brisbane and enjoyed seeing the utes and different rigs. Cheers.
You have some GREAT features in your drawer system... most do not translate well for pickup drawer systems, but then those of us who did not choose a sawed off 5' bed have plenty of space back there for a sleeping platform without the fancy extensions. Love the series... if I ever switch from my Tacoma to a 4 Runner or a Jeep, or if I am ever helping a friend design a bed system for a sport ute, I shall have to reference back to some of the amazing features you guys worked into your drawer system.
I love this drawer system. I’m looking at purchasing a 1991 land cruiser soon so I will put this in my ides for it. Thanks for all the great videos and great quality work.
Love it. It is awesome you will share the drawing /CAD information Cheers
My dad built a 1" square steel, U-shape configuration with 3/4" plywood on top of the storage for travel for me and my brother, maybe 1' below the boot in his '72 Chevy truck. Complete insanity now but nobody batted any eye in the 70's. I like your build. I've thought about a decked system for awhile now, but when you start thinking of a house battery setup you may have to cut out some plastic if, it doesn't fit under the hood. Analysis paralysis.
AWESOME DESIGN AND VERY FUNCTIONAL!
Awesome Build! Love the attention to detail. The pull out bed extension is a great idea!
I was expecting to see that bamboo give just a little bit when he said he was getting in and through the side door, but no, nothing. Excellent design and choice of materials. It’s all in the planning and Farnell is a bit of a genius.
most beautiful setup I've even seen!
Nicely done. Very elegant Michael!
Totally worth the wait. This thing is super cool.
Very nice! I really like the selection of materials with the stainless steel frame and bamboo flat panels. Quality throughout and the selection of the horizontal Dometic refrigerator is a great choice to facilitate the sleeping platform on top.
One of my favorite things in the world is when professional-family-friendly-youtube folks catch themselves mid word saying "shi-stuff". For real though, I've sincerely enjoyed all your videos :)
Thank you!
That is pretty fancy. Very well designed with a minimalist approach. Love it
Absolutely do not need 'fancy' 12V outlets. Got mine for $12 off ebay (voltmeter, twin USB3, cig socket, switch + inline fuse) and came all wired up and it has worked perfectly for the past 2 years of heavy use. Oh AND it's 'marine' rated as has taken plenty of water spills, dust, knocks, etc 👍
I am a new subscriber, your content is awesome keep it up ✌️
Thank you! 👊🏼👍🏼
What are these “electronicals” you were referring to (7:48)....😳😂
Excellent video as always Michael, keep up the good work.👍
That was vary nice of you for releasing the CAD files. This drawer system design blows anything I've seen out of the water. It just so happens I own a welder, CNC router, and a FZJ80. I might use sheets of marine grade HDPE instead of wood though. Looks like I have a new project to tackle this summer.
Hdpe would be ideal imho too. So tough and light weight
I think they were considering HDPE in one video. Bamboo looks nice though
Hi Triot, I'm affiliated with a company in Poland that designs and produces motorboats out of HDPE. Although it is generally a great material for various applications, and has inherent benefits (waterproof, impact resistant, chemically resistant, etc), unfortunately it is quite heavy as compared to the materials used here. So much so that using it in offroad/overland applications where weight is absolutely critical is simply unjustifiable. We actually did a few feasibility studies through our project office (world class engineers) for overland applications of the material, and unfortunately it turns out that the intrinsically best feature of the material - it's density - makes it too heavy. We would love to be proved wrong though! Let me know if you manage to use this material for an overland build. Best wishes.
@@mikolajdrozd9255 Really? I work in the industry so its why I knew of marine grade HDPE. I have some King Starboard scraps in my workshop from a past side project. I have some 1/4 and 1/2 inch sheets of Starboard and It doesn't seem any heavier than the plywood I have on hand. The biggest draw back I see with Starboard is cost. You're also limited in color choices. I'll do some more research for now but I have connections to wholesale suppliers so Its why I thought Id use the stuff.
@@mikolajdrozd9255 what's your favorite material?
Have you looked at maybe adding a shock to your tailgate to help with lowering? Can take up the weight and help it not drop when opening to exit the sleeping platform!
Very impressive design. Great job
I don't care what your wife and kids say, you're a funny guy, Michael. Keep up the good work! #OB22923
167lbs im super strong. Lol killed me with that one good sense of humor
It's interesting to see how different Americans set up their touring rigs compared to Australians.
To be fair, most of us don’t build up our rigs as much as this example.
Is it really about America vs Australia? I've travelled Australia and seen a lot of builds there. My take is, in any country there are many ways of doing things. My rig is just one example.
@@OverlandBound Each country has different factors to consider when setting up a touring vehicle, his comment isnt pitting one country vs another.
I'd actually like to know what they do in Australia too. Can you tell me some of the differences or some of the things you add or dont add?
That is one incredible drawer system, I want one!
Ok I'm signing Elsie the 80 series up for overland bound.
I'm refered by one of your members Neil
Welcome to the crew!
I have Rack Envy .... shit that is BaddAss.. I got rid of my LR3, Range Rover classic and my other SUV's.. traded in for a GMC c2500.. now with an older camper that is almost finished. I'll have to share some stories
That’s the best system I’ve seen in a long time!👍🏽 great job!
Excellent craftsmanship, well thought out for your needs. But, why do I get the feeling 12 months from now we just might hear, "We sold the drawer system, so we can build something even better!" Lol.
Wishing you and yours many safe miles and adventures.
Awesome well done mate thanks
Nice setup, I love the wood. I made mine out of plywood, is weight close to 500 lbs.
Hey man can I see some pictures was thinking of making one out of plywood for my rig
@@jacmaxwell8836 i just pull out all my drawer system yesterday but check out my Instagram I posted some in there.
Bump for the algorithm ! Love the sleeping platform ! where did you get the support mounts that go into the seat brackets ?
Awesome setup. Is it possible to buy the hook brackets for the bed? 🙏😊
Hey Michael, has Parnell thought about just selling the whole assembly?. I wonder what that would be $$? For the people that has some spare change but not enough time or skills to build it. This is a nice piece!!.
Thanks! He’ll help with advice, designs, and components but not building them. It’s just not his core business.
@@OverlandBound Great design If you build it I'll buy it
@@OverlandBound how can I reach Parnell? I just installed a sleeping platform inside my vehicle but really want a more custom design like yours. I'd love the complete Fusion file and not just the frame =)
@@ToySldr78 Parnell Pollioni parnell@pollioni.com
Thanks for this!
Strong work
Most excellent drawers and series! I just watched them all. In the first video, you said your budget was $900. I suspect you likely went well above that just in material cost,. If you were to add in Parnell’s contribution what do you think the true cost of these were? By far the most beautiful drawers I’ve see, great work!
Yo Mike can't wait to get mine going to start going on necessary adventures and hopefully we can go on some trips together and through some different ideas around. Can't wait to get moved to Ohio and get my membership. I currently only have the free version my name on there is Zaroch
This setup is awesome. Curious if you or anyone else knows where to find similar brackets to those three that connect the platform extension to the drawers. Would love something similar for my setup, thanks!
They are custom units: www.overlandbound.com/drawer-system-sleep-system-plans/
Did Parnell make those parts? I never would have thought!
Yup!
Great stuff
Nice one Michael!
This is such a neat design and execution! I'm looking for an answer for my own build: welded or plywood construction.. There are so many plywood made systems with just hidden screws joints. Your chioce was to go with steel frame, but was it based on any experience with those plywood systems after some time of a proper, offroad use? I'm wondering if those plywood ones can handle a long term offroad use.
Nice 👍
This is awesome
Can we buy some of those custom brackets? I would love to buy the support brackets on both ends of the sleeping platform!
Alway giving me ideas 💡
That is a real nice setup. But the real question is, is, how much did it cost you to have that built?
It’s clever, but I think a hard shell rtt is better as you can use all of the rear of the vehicle, plus sleeping in your vehicle will lead to roof rust later on from condensation.... I like to have a hot shower & a real coffee machine & a hot meal from my oven/induction cooktop when I’m out n about.
That intro song came on and I got confused. Thought I was watching Jimbo's Garage.
Hello Mike, does the Dometic have enough room around it for good air intake/exhaust? Well done...cheers!
Yes it does. Plenty of air circulation for both that and the inverter.
Are you able to use the electrical outlets when the tailgate is closed? If not, would you orient them vertically to be able to use them when the gate is closed if you could do it over?
That's a big consideration for me as I design my own drawer build. Thinking of how to protect them when I'm loading heavy stuff in and out is the difficulty and whether or not I would ever use them with the back closed anyway
@@trevorchapin2287 I use my drawers as a sleeping platform, and as I am planning power in the back, I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to plug a fan in or charge my phone at night while the gate is closed.
@@matttherat343 My thoughts exactly. I'm thinking of adding just a dual USB connection accessible when the rear is closed. I'm debating on using a USB fan or hardwiring/semi-permanently mounting one in the rear. Either way would still be usable when all closed up inside. The more I research and look into though, the larger and more complicated my wiring diagram has gotten
Exactly, you won't be able to do anything while the tailgate is closed, waste of functionality. should put it where it's accessible at all times.
This is really awesome. My one question is, where do the kids sleep?
Where do the kids sleep if you have a fancy roof top tent for you and the Mrs? I can not speak for his specific choice of solution, but there are always options ranging from putting them in a ground tent, to a RTT, to a cot suspended across the front seat, to squeezing in with the parents (yes it would be cramped squeezing 3 people wide on the sleeping platform, but it is similar space to a "3 person tent").
What are the chances of Parnell building one of these I can just buy and install? I can source and wire up my own fridge.
"I'm a tall guy...and I'm FIT." 😆😆😁😁
:D
Hi Michael, just wondering if those custom supporting hardware used to hold slewing platform can be purchase online?
Do you guys sell the inlays for the bed extension in the front
See if this helps! www.overlandbound.com/drawer-system-sleep-system-plans/
After having this for a few years, is this still used for a bed platform often? Or is the tent used more these days?
Nice video ! 👍🏼 Do you know someone who build me drawers like that (same quality) at the west coast by chance ? (I live in LA)
Thanks by advance !
SHoutouts from the Philippine islands buddy. What's the size of your drawer slides? Thanks!
LOVE this build!. I'm looking to replicate some of what you've done myself and the vast majority makes sense to me. But what USB/AC plug panel are you using to pass through to your inverter? I can't find anything similar offered by Blue Sea like I could find the 12V panel on the left or the inverter remote control above.
After playing the video back at 0.25 speed in 4K, the wording on the panel just reads "Caution - Risk of electrical shock - Do not open" and "For indoor use only"... no branding or model numbers.
Ah! Yes that was misleading - that piece was something I got from Amazon - just went with a simple panel similar to this: amzn.to/2PfmcKo
@@OverlandBound Thank you! When I was googling all sorts of stuff yesterday I forgot the word recessed. Apparently that was the key to finding these
how are you happy with the fridge?
Extremely happy. It has been a fantastic upgrade for us.
Fantastic build..but the Cost must be around $ 2000.00 stainless steel $$$ all the lil fittings $$$.. Bamboo $$$
Thanks!
How much do you weigh? How much weight can the sleeping platform support?
A LOT! It is rock solid. I cant even guess at a weight that would crush it. 2500lbs?
@@OverlandBound That's impressive because you weigh like 1000 pounds (LOL).
Hmmm... I would have guessed that frame weighed 22.5639 pounds.
where can I get those "electrionicals"? do they sell them at the store next to the "aluminium" parts? :-)
Parnell is the real deal.
What is the length of the sleeping platform when fully extended?
Where do you get the plastic for the sliding bed?
Its called HDPE plastic
Where is the link for panels draw system?
www.overlandbound.com/drawer-system-sleep-system-plans/
Will this drawer system fit for 100 series Landcruiser?
It probably very close, but the plans (link in description) can be modified if need be.
@@OverlandBound Thank You

What cushion do you use and where do you store it?
What's your mpg in that loaded?

I thought the cargo rail was a means to fix a f&@kup. Clever way to cover you must have been a carpenter.
I just came to comment the same thing 😂 definitely a fix to a screw up
They messed it up, but they ordered a replacement sheet of material.
22.563847 pounds is oddly specific lol
Haha
"HPQRT plastic" 🤣
Not sure why he cheaped out on the build. Lol.
