since the movie is 24 years old and has been meme'd all over the place, I can't put total trust in people that catch the ending early now. Same with the ending of Se7en. I'm not saying that the people are lying about not knowing already, but maybe subconsciously.... I think more often than not it's in their heads. For instance, to this day I've only seen maybe 15 minutes of Citizen Kane, but by the time I saw those 15 minutes, I already knew what Rosebud meant, and that was before social media memes and reviews existed.

Before this was released in the UK, in 1999, there was already much talk about a terrific twist it had in the media. This meant I was looking for the twist when I went to see it. I guessed the twist as the words 'The Next Fall' came up on screen. Spoiled it for myself really. Arguably it was the media that spoiled it for me by telling me there was a twist.

This kind of movie could never work today with social media. It would be ruined before it even hit the theaters.
Back when this was released, the internet existed but social media wasn't yet a thing... it was easier to keep things a secret that way. Of course the media can always be relied on to ruin it. But thankfully for most people that wasn't the case. Even people who saw it in theaters managed to somehow not ruin it for their friends who hadn't seen it yet. That would never happen today.

I've seen this amazing film so many times, and each time I see or find something I didn't see before. It just occurred to me that every ghost manifests in the condition they were in when they died, which is why so many are scary or disgusting or violent. But Malcom was talking tenderly to an injured child when he died, so that's why he's not scary and isn't looking for revenge, and isn't in pain. He just wants to help because that's what he was doing when he died. Man, the layers here are mind-blowing.

Shyamalan is a great filmmaker, but so far, the rest of his career has been chasing the elegant surprise of this film - but you can't really do that if everybody is expecting a "Shyamalan Twist". Some of them are good, some not (although people disagree over which is which), but even the bad ones show elegant directing.

Knowing the twist, sheds a whole new light on Cole's initial reactions to Malcolm. This is the movie that made M. Night Shyamalan a Hollywood golden boy. Then a string of disappointments, like The Village, The Happening, Lady in the Water, The Last Airbender, and After Earth, made people leery of his movies. His latest, Knock at the Cabin, is pretty good though.

Before this movie, "twist" endings were nearly non-existent. This was a major moment in cinematic history. Since then, it's become absurdly mandatory for movies (especially horror/thrillers) to have the big reveal at the end, which is, imo, extremely overdone. Now we have to wait to the end of movies to figure out what was actually happening the whole time, whereas before, they set everything up gradually and the ending tied the movie all together. This is why we can figure out what's going to happen at the end: we're looking for clues in anticipation of the movie's entire narrative. Go back and watch just about any other movie before this, and you'll see that the climax of the film was just that-- the climax. Do they fall in love or not? Do they catch the bad guy or not? The ending WRAPPED UP the plot, but it WASN'T THE PLOT. The "twist ending" shifts focus from the plot, and places it entirely at the end, which I can't stand anymore. But this is The Sixth Sense. Seeing this in theaters and talking about it afterwards was absolutely mind-blowing.

I always wondered if I would have guessed the twist but it was spoiled for me before I saw the movie. Just like Fight Club. Thanks Rosie O’Donnell.
I hate spoilers. My wife won’t even watch trailers because they usually give so much away.

Congratulations, you figured it out long before any other reactor I've seen. WAAAAY before I figured it out the first time I saw it. But there's another twist...Cole knew the whole time.
Also, Dr. Crowe's wife was so tormented the whole time because he was sticking around. She still felt his presence and couldn't grieve and move on because his spirit was still around. That's why he said things would be different in the morning. He was going to finally pass on and stop tormenting her. And she could move on with her life...maybe even with the guy who was trying to comfort her. Malcolm had to let go so that his wife could let go.
Also, in the end, Cole helped Dr. Crowe just as much as Dr. Crowe helped him. They needed each other.
And can we just talk about the undeniable talent of the greatest child star ever, Haley Joel Osment?

Did you somehow find a way to pop into my head? You've reacted to at least half of my top 10 ever and maybe a couple more. Trippy. Oh, watch True Romance...great flick and the cast of major names is unbelievable as well as watch Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas in Desperado (another great one).

Split (2016) is part of a trilogy.

Right. "Unbreakable" is part one, though the story pretty much runs parallel to "Split," so you could watch them in either order. "Glass" is the third part that ties them together.

You really should watch Unbreakable next. Also a Shyamalan movie with Bruce Willis starring. I think it's even better than The Sixth Sense, and it's widely considered one of the best comic book movies ever made, even though it isn't based on a particular comic.

Have you watched “Signs” yet? If not, you should watch it and react. Another M Night’s thriller movie.

"Not spoiling twists" is one of the things I mourn the most, thanks to social media and the loss of theaters. There are a lot of other things about all of that which completely suck, but that one seems relevant today.

Late to the party, but great reaction!
This was as close to a perfect thriller as I’ve ever seen! Saw it at a drive-in movie and didn’t catch the Big Twist like you did until the end, so hubby and I stayed for the next showing to watch it again - didn’t get home until about 3am 🤣
    M. Night Shy is a genius!

Love your take on this movie and your insights into filmmaking. There are so many incredible subtle touches in this film. When the young man who is trying to get Anna to fall for him leaves in his car, he screeches the wheels. He's not happy because she rejected him, though we think it is to get away from Malcolm. Anna is still hung up on Malcolm. Also, watch Malcom walking down the street...his hand is clutching the part of his body where he was shot! And then...after Malcolm realizes he's dead and looks at the TV and sees himself in his tux telling his dead self to "come on"

Idk if it's you, which it could be for testing or takedown issues idk, but it also could be others trying to benefit off your videos.
There's a new channel going by Heather Sinclair that is posting your videos as if it's you. Maybe it is, just wanted to let you know in case it's not. It's re-uploads of your videos, very low subs, new channel and the comment sections turned off. So just seems odd and suspect.

The patient who shoots Bruce Willis at the beginning of the movie was played by Donnie Wahlberg, who you know better as First Lt. Carwood Lipton in Band of Brothers.

You didn't catch on late.... you caught it earlier than most who watch this film. Most people don't see it until the reveal at the end. That's the genius of M Night, he doesn't trick anyone... it's all right there in front of us. But our brains are designed to fill in the blanks of the story we don't see and he took full advantage of this by how he carefully put each scene together. Like when Cole comes home from school and Malcom is sitting with his mother in the living room. We automatically assume they must have been having a conversation prior to Cole arriving. It's not until we know the truth later, that we look back and realize... we never actually saw them ever acknowledge each other. We never notice that Malcom always wears the same clothes or that he can't keep track of time anymore. You did good picking up on this early.... most people really don't.

I watched it separately with both my daughters... my oldest picked it up from the first scene transition... "he's dead, he's a ghost." ...boo, My youngest got to really enjoy it as she didn't get it till the final scene. It's more fun when they don't see it coming.
