Ok, here's the deal -- Jenny never set out to hurt Forrest in anything she ever did, all she ever did is hurt herself. She never manipulated him for her gain. She was always honest with him. Have we walked a mile in her shoes? In its simplest form what we see is unconditional love from Forrest. That's the message of the movie. In a more complicated form, what we often see from Reactors is a complete lack of compassion for a very troubled girl who can't seem to get out of her own way. In layman's terms, she had to grow up, and Lil Forrest was the event in her life that propelled her. This is a normal curve in MANY people's lives. Even without Christ.

The best character arc in the movie is actually LT Dan. He is a broken man after the war, not just physically but emotionally and psychology. Has PTSD and sees no point to living. He could easily let that spiral the rest of his life into despair, drugs, abusing others etc. But he actually accepts Forrest's help, and through his friendship, finds redemption.

To be a little girl and be sexually assaulted by the one male in her life that should have been her guardian angel caused her to feel worthless and not loveable. Jenny's life is a juxtaposition to Forrest Gump's life. They both go through troubling childhood experiences. However, Forrest had the benefit of an awesome parent to guide them through the difficulties of life. Whereas Jenny never had that and she was left to search for that comfort as a broken person. Amazing writing to give the story an anchor as well as a propelling force to drive Forrest Gump forward in life.

Aside from a pretty fair portrayal of an abuse victim not feeling worthy of affection it also portrays a fairly common aspect of the interaction of people in another way. Namely the way each side may very differently interpret the kind of relationship they have. Forrest wanted a romantic relationship and Jenny did not. That isn't leading anyone on, Jenny clearly loved Forrest, just not romantically.
I would argue that she never really cared for him that way. She was just worn down by life and saw Forrest as a safe choice, and she did love him on some level. I think often as an audience we want characters to fall in love with each romantically, but especially in real life both sides often do not feel the same kind of love for each other. Attacking the other side for not feeling the same is not really fair or honest about the depth of relationships people can actually with each other.

@@Deorman Romantic love and Platonic love are two different things. I am certain that she loved Forrest since they were children. Romantically no. I think part of what the movie illustrates is her confusion about what Romantic Love is and makes her statements to Forrest about not understanding rather ironic, but I do think it is clear she was attracted to Forrest nor was she interested in pursuing a romantic relationship until she had re-evaluated what long term romantic partner should be for her.

I still and always felt Jenny loved Forrest but she was too damaged by her father molesting her and thought she wasn't worthy of Forrest's love so she kept him at a distance she also knew how pure Forrest was and didn't want to ruin him with all her issues. I think that is why she apologized to him because she knew she was probably hurting him but that was the only way she thought she could protect him from her issues and now that she was dying she didn't have to try and keep him at a distance anymore she would be gone soon.

I didn’t really appreciate the complexities of this movie when I was younger. It has grown on me so much as I understand more. The problem is that even today people value intelligence over character (kindness etc) and it’s a shame because Forrest would be the best friend you could have.

I was going to say almost exactly the same thing. She did love him and that is why she stayed away. She lost her mom young, had an abusive feather an then abusive relationships not by choice exactly. you kinda fall into a pattern and its not an easy cycle to break. She was trying to protect Forrest like Frank said and I'm guessing also felt unworthy of his pure love never having experiencing it before. They grew up in the same place but Forrest's mom showed him how to love and act. Jenny was not as lucky.

When Forrest gets cut off at the D.C. rally he uttered some of the most poignant pieces of dialogue never heard. In an interview the director Robert Zemeckis let viewers know what was said. "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mamas without any legs. In Vietnam, your best good friend could get shot. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."

  • @BonnyT
    @BonnyT 2 года назад +23

Not enough gets said about how Jenny probably felt uneasy about getting into a relationship with an intellectually disabled man. Imagine if their genders were reversed and a man of typical intelligence was pursuing a relationship with an intellectually disabled woman...most people would agree that this could be viewed as an exploitative and inappropriate relationship.
Jenny probably felt guilty about that on top of feeling unworthy of Forrest's pure love (because of her severe childhood sexual abuse and other traumas).
Jenny deserves so much compassion and all of Forrest Snr and Forrest Jnr's love. Forrest, of course, deserves all the love too.
But no matter how 'good' or deserving someone is (like Forrest), that still doesn't make one entitled to be in a relationship with someone.

It's not Jenny's fault - she grew up abused and molested at the hands of her father. The man who was SUPPOSED to love her and care for her. Her self-destructive behaviour is fallout from that abuse. So's her inability to believe that she could be worthy of the kind of love that Forrest offers.

Jenny was emotionally damaged. She would have had difficulty recognising love, mistaking it for the type of emotional manipulation that was her early representation of love. It wasn't really love that her father showed her and it wasn't really love from any boyfriend represented in the story, except Forrest who unfortunately bore the consequences of Jenny's childhood trauma. I'm afraid it is like this for so many adults suffering CPTSD and the like. They can often be resistant to true emotional attachment which makes them difficult to get to know personally. How can you love if you don't know love?

When someone is abused, they often believe that they are unworthy of being with a 'regular', person. Jenny wanted to keep her relationship apart from the rest of her life. Her relationship with Forrest was her 'safe place' where she returned to feel safe. But she didn't feel good enough for Forrest. Also, Forrest was out running for over three years (unreachable), and then he was at home for a while, when Jenny's letter got to him.
Jenny was protecting Forrest, by keeping away from him, while she was suffering from the results of her child abuse from her father. Forrest was her safe place, and she protected him from the ugly life she had.
Jenny loved and respected Forrest. And she 'mothered' him by her keeping him innocent and uninvolved in her reality. She was a good friend to him.

It took her a lifetime to come to terms with the fact that the peace and safety she desired would not be found in various parts of the world but in her hometown, with her childhood friend and first love. We all have to experience journeys in our lives, we hope we can get to where we want but we don't know if what we are doing is gonna get us there. JEnny represents that emptiness that needs to be filled in all of us. Especially those that have suffered from abuse.

Jenny's problem is how she was used and abused, 1st by her father, then by every man she met except Forrest. She felt like she was worth nothing and was never going to be worth anything and would just bring Forrest down with her , she had no idea how to love anyone. It wasn't until she had little Forrest and was given one pure good thing in her life she was able to find her self worth to a point and then accepted that she loved Forrest and always had and it was OK to love someone and not expect them to hurt her. It is very complicated and you get snippets of it in every scene she is in. The first thing you see is all she knows how to do is run from anything as she keeps telling Forrest to do , she doesn't know any other way to deal with the pain and bad and it takes her so long to finally figure it out ( unfortunately this is true for too many and some never get to figure anything out) , Jenny deserves pity not hate , she didn't know how to love until it was too late but she gave Forrest 2 gifts before she left, true love and what it feels like , and someone to love and give his life meaning in Forrest Jr. . Forrest might not be a genius but I would lay any bet he is an incredibly loving and good father.

18:21 Ms, Californiablend DOESN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE KIND OF ABUSE JENNY SUFFERED AS A LITTLE GIRL AND THE IMPACT IT HAS ON PEOPLES' LIVES. It's extremely difficult to be healed from that kind of childhood hell or to make good choices in life, especially if you don't have proper help, which Jenny didn't. Jenny had been raped repeatedly by her father as a child, and beaten judging by her injuries and torn clothes, Jenny's mother died, possibly killed by her father as well, we don't know, and though they mention that Jenny had sisters, they too are absent from the story, like her mother. Jenny was a severely damaged person, and that she seems to have gotten it together at the end of her life as they show is pretty unlikely in reality with the amount of damage she suffered as a child. Most people who have childhoods as bad as Jenny's never recover.

    Hello, CB.
Nice react to this classic. But it always amazes me how little sympathy Jenny gets, even from women. Jenny was sexually ABUSED as a CHILD. This caused her severe TRAUMA. It's all well and good to talk about choosing this and that, but it's easier said than done under certain circumstances. It takes a long time to understand and sort out trauma like that. And she eventually does.
Also, she cared very much for Forrest. But she was trying to run away, like she told Forrest to do. She was trying to run away from her pain and herself. She didn't feel worthy of Forrest's love and caring.
Anyway, enjoyed the react. Look forward to more. Take care. Regards from Illinois!

    • @83gemm

I think it’s really really hard for people who haven’t suffered abuse to forget one key factor:
Victims of abuse are brainwashed to believe they DESERVE it.
That is their reality. “He wouldn’t have hit me if I’d worn the right dress,” “He wouldn’t be touching me that way if I didn’t provoke him,” “I’m lucky to have her, because who else would put up with me?”
Jenny’s abuse was probably from the day she was born in some fashion or other. She can’t fathom that it’s not her fault, so for most of the film, she’s afraid to hurt Forest because she sees herself as “bad.”
That’s why she runs after their night together. Imagine knowing only misery your whole life and thinking you deserved that, then tasting happiness and feeling like you are stealing it because you aren’t worthy.
Jenny had to get herself past that for the sake of her son, and once she did, she contacted Forest. Not wholly excusable, but still pitiable.

    • @83gemm

Oh, also, NOBODY talked about abuse back then. Hell, I grew up in the 80s and 90s and no one talked about it then. It was controversial when the police taught us about “bad touch” in like third grade. Parents were furious that we were discussing “that stuff” in school.
There was no Reddit to say, “Girl, run!” There was little to no representation in media for trauma. There was also not as much understanding of the psychological effects of trauma on people. Even war vets with PTSD were told to get over it. So Jenny had no support and no other voice outside of what her abusers told her.

What most people don't get about Jenny is that her spirit was way more broken and bent than Forrest's spine ever was. The two of them meeting on the bus for the first time and Forrest thinking she was an angel, well Jenny felt his purity and innocence even more. Because hers was lost to her lowlife scuzbucket of a father.
JENNY LOVED FORREST WAY MORE THAN FORREST LOVED HER. but. She never felt good enough for him because, in her mind she wasn't pure like him. She loved him so much, that she protected Forrest from his one and only weakness. Herself.
And years and years later, she finally figured out it wasn't her fault. Years after that, she found it in herself to forgive herself for not being innocent because that was never her fault. It was only then that she could look Forrest in the eye and feel worthy of his love and reciprocate it.
That is how absolutely fucking damaging abuse is. It can completely fuck up multiple lives for decades and even generations.
That's the true story of Forrest Gump. Don't ever judge Jenny. She was just a sweet little abused girl that no one but Forrest could see how soft and pure her heart was. Pure enough to deny herself of a life and a love she truly deserved and allow Forrest to blossom simply because she had to straighten it all out in her mind, heart, soul and body first, before giving herself to him.
She suffered for years to protect Forrest from her. She gave up her own life so that Forrest wasn't held back in his by all of her demons. She allowed Forrest to live a good life by sacrificing her own.
That is love in its purest form.
    Nice reaction. Cheers!

The theme of running is woven throughout this film. Forest runs away from bullies at an early age and eventually finds running to be something he’s good at. But Jenny is the one who does the most running. She’s running away from her childhood trying to find peace in very destructive ways. Forest was part of her childhood and even though she loved him, it probably hurt to be around him because it was like being home again. It wasn’t until faced with her own mortality that she knew running wasn’t working. In our darkest moments we find strength.

And I love that his mother didn't send him to a "special" school to be rid of him,in that day and age that would've been a death sentence, institutional care is still not in a good place but now they at least don't experiment on their patients.

When Jenny tells Forrest he's the dad and it LITERALLY takes him back and he says "Is he smart or is he-..." That part just BREAKS me. Easily my favorite scene in the history of film. Tom Hanks is so fantastic. And the fact that what he's really asking is "Do people think he's smart or do they think hes like me because hes different" and the fact that thats his FIRST concern. Because he knows if hes seen as different he will have a rough time growing up like he did. Just such a great moment.

Jenny is a testament to how unresolved childhood trauma can mess you up in adulthood. She wanted to fly away (escape), and she kept trying to do that by running from pillar to post over the years. She didn't think she was good enough for Forrest after her tarnished past. She finally made the decision to get her shit together after that faithful night (which is why she told the cab driver: "I'm not running"), and I think the pregnancy helped her with that... she focused all her energy on being a good mum, and giving her child a better childhood than she had. I believe she didn't want to reach out to him until she deemed herself "worthy"... plus he was running for 3 years of that child's life.

Jenny always cared about Forrest - a lot. She felt she was too broken, not worthy of his love, and SHE was the one that didn't know what real love is. Her abusive father kept her for knowing what true love is. Like many sexually abused children she only knew to show love through the use of her body. The only thing that was ingrained in her head to was to run (fly away) from her problems like she did from her father. It is what she taught Forrest to do and that is what she did. It explains why she said "you don't want to marry me" and it is why her answer to "Where are you running off to" was profound. She said "I am not running" meaning she was going to straighten out her life so she felt worthy of Forrest's love. And when that finally happened, her past caught had up with her and she had contracted Aids.

My point is the Jenny character would have been better served by the writers if she had not cut Forrest out of his son’s life for years and contacted him before she knew she was sick. Also the whole running part of the movie was frankly dumb- where was he eating, shitting, sleeping for almost 4 years? And all Jenny had to do was file a missing person’s report (adding he’s a mentally handicapped man and father of her newborn) and the authorities would have found him. Hell once she had the baby she could have moved back into his house, while they searched for him, and had help from all his neighbors (maybe even gasp get a waitress job there). They way the movie is written there is doubt at the end of Jenny’s motives; that she contacted him only because she had to, and I would made sure that the audience knew that was not what she was doing.

Jenny goes down the only path she knew growing up, it took her a long time to work through all that trauma from childhood that Forrest never had or had a support system and unshakable love from his mother. And it's too easy "why are you doing that" if you didn't have to go through it.

  • @Avalonia320

I do have a ton of empathy for Jenny; she had a horrible time and needed serious help. That doesn't change the fact that she hurt Forrest over and over and he didn't deserve it. I think she did have genuine love for Forrest but she wasn't in love with him & the fact is, she only showed up when it was convenient for her. In the meantime, he went through hella trauma too and she wasn't there for him, not at all. He went through war, lost his best friend, lost his mama, and she couldn't even bother to come around. I understand why she was the way she was but for once, it would have been nice to see Forrest get cut the break he gave everyone else.

  • @MartinoProd

I think it's easy to forget that Jenny was molested by her father and as a result ended up in a variety of abusive relationships that only helped to form her perspective. You could say that she took advantage of him in the end but if you listen to her she owns up to her behavior and treatment of Forrest and to be clear she never asked him for so much as a cent while she knew him. This isn't you're fault because all reaction channels seem to have no compassion for jenny and I think that's from this idea that the movie needs a conflict/villain but it had multiple conflicts one was an actual war. Just understand that victims of sexual assault from caregivers/gaurdians cause the most intense damage and make it next to impossible to form intimate relationships with others oh and the fact the movie takes place in the 60s-80s where the idea of mental health was more so from schizophrenics/criminally insane pov Jenny might not have ever been able to get therapy. Love your reviews especially your Harry Potter ones!

Jenny was physically, sexually & emotionally abused by her own father. A man who was supposed to protect, love & care for her upbringing. This shattered Jenny's self-worth. She never thought she was good enough or deserving of love, especially from a such an honest, caring person as Forrest, who grew up with a devoted, supportive mother. It took Jenny a long time to heal and at that time there was a great stigma in getting help or therapy. Still today there is victim-blaming & disbelief of their trauma. After she had little Forrest, she finally realized she had a life worth living. She never asked Forrest for anything, she worked as waitress & scraped by. Jenny may have been running away from herself all this time, but she never lied to Forrest. Broken people deserve love, even when they aren't able to give it.

One of my favorite movies ❤️❤️❤️ You really can't compare Jenny and Forrest. Forrest grew up with a loving mom. Jenny's dad sexually abused her. Her choices in life was obviously the wrong ones, but it was her way to cope. I think when she said Forrest didn't know what love is she meant herself. And she did NOT take advantage of him. She had her son when he Forrest was out running so she couldn't tell him. She turned her life around and got a job and stopped taking drugs because of her son and she wanted her son to have a dad so that's why she reached out. Sorry, but I'm always gonna defend Jenny. I love her.

In some ways Jenny was fortunate. Even though she made bad choices as a young woman, she still left a beautiful intelligent child, turned her life around, and made sure Forest and their son would be together. Little Forest was left in the best hands possible, before his mother moved on. My childhood sweetheart died at the hands of her father. He killed her two brothers, baby sister, and her mother too. Also killed himself. May 17, 1969.

Parents are everything. Forrest had a supporting, encouraging mom that loved him with all her heart, Jenny on the other hand had an alcoholic, violent, sexually and physically abusive father. Children are like sponges. It is no accident that Forrest thought he could do anything and did while Jenny was beaten down, demoralized and full of doubt, picking abusive men like her father was. She knew no better but sort of finally corrected herself in the end when she had a responsibility in her life, her son.

Like Forrest, I've had the challenge of loving a woman that went thru far more abuse than Jenny. Thankfully we both believe in a God that has helped us through the tough times; giving me the patience when I wanted to give up, and helping my wife to forgive and heal. We now have six kids (one who's named Jenny) and seven grandkids. The biggest key is to not just call God Lord, but to treat Him as LORD, realizing that He has a much better life for us than what we can create. Even Jesus had to do His Father's will in order to do what He did. John 5:19

I think a lot the Jenny storyline is really about how her childhood made her feel throughout her life. She knew she was messed up and was afraid of hurting Forrest, she wanted to be with him but didn't feel good or pure enough for someone like him. It really kind of dives into the psychology of childhood abuse victims. The low self-confidence and seeking abusive partners herself..the drug use was all because of what was engrained from her father........and Forrest was so innocent and pure because his mother had made the world simple and easy to understand that he could truly love Jenny unconditionally.

Forrest Gump is the perfect Taoist character. He's simple, just being his natural self, isn't very bright, but he's the steady one, while the world around him changes and is lost. Forrest doesn't plan, pontificate, scheme, he just is...and thus he overcomes. One of the most powerful moments in the movie is when he tells Jenny that he loves her and she tells him: "Forrest you don't know what love is." The truth being that Forrest has always known what love is and it's Jenny, the higher IQ one, who doesn't really know.

None of these lines are eloquent or poetic, just simple lines. But Hanks delivers them with such feeling, emotion, and subtext that even "That's all I got to say about that" can rip your heart out.
Also, people seldom point out that Lt. Dan's fiance is Asian, possibly Vietnamese, just another demonstration that he had finally put the past behind him.

11:32 Carrying people while running is a big part of army training, but it's also during that training that my dad injured his leg and was discharged. But if you ask any soldier ever, he DID have to go back. My dad told me, on the battlefield the thing that takes way way WAY more precedent than killing the enemy or staying alive yourself is making sure your fellow soldiers stay alive "Protect the guy next to you and make sure he gets home, because he's the only one making sure you get home" that's also why Forrest got the Medal of Honor. Even though you might've killed people in the situation that earned you that medal, you ultimately get it because your actions saved lives

Jenny had to go through her journey to finally end up in a place where she was capable of reciprocating the love Forrest gave her. She never means to hurt him or lead him on, he simply gets caught in her path of self-destruction. Yes, she could have gotten help earlier and made better choices but I think that the way she was written is more true to how the attitude toward mental health was in that era of our history - and, sadly, still is now in a lot of ways. There is no right answer for how to feel about her character and IMO that's what makes her so memorable and real.

Forrest in one line summed up my emotions about the first 20 years of my life. "Sometimes there just aren't enough rocks". It took me another decade to even approach emotional stability and maybe another ten years to find self-worth. For me Jenny is a sympathetic character because she doesn't see the value in herself. When you don't see yourself as being worth anything, your actions follow suit.
Especially when it comes to self abuse -- and substance abuse -- as a way to try and bury the pain rather than confront it. Sad fact is that you're more likely to end up burying yourself, as there's not enough drugs or alcohol to cover that much emotional trauma.
Side note, I still say that when Jenny asks "Will you marry me Forest?" he should have said "As you wish."

I totally disagree about Jenny, she wasn't his downfall nor unredeemable. They did not come from the same cloth, as she grew up with sexually abused by her father, while Forrest had a loving home and a stable relationship with his mother. Jenny was pretty much broken by her childhood and it cause her to live a destructive life and her relationships with men. She loved Forrest as her best friend but wasn't in love with him as he was the only stable male relationship she had. She was a good friend to him growing up as she accepted him for who he was and never put him down like the others. She also felt she wasn't good enough for his love which is why she kept pushing him away. Besides, she did had her own life to lead and was never his girlfriend so she really didn't do anything wrong in going away except for the last time when she left without telling him after they had sex. She also never took advantage of him and never cared about his wealth. She came back the first time, because I think she was lonely as was he and wanted escape her terrible life she was living and being around Forrest and back at home was the only good thing she had but she felt she wasn't good for him which is why she left but I think she had sex with him just to give him something special before she went. Jenny just seemed to runaway a lot from her situations in a way she was running away from herself. I think she didn't tell Forrest about her son sooner was because she didn't want him to feel obligated after leaving him the way she did. She told him the truth because she wanted to her son to have a loving family before she died and also give Forrest what he wanted a marriage and to get to know his son because she knew he would take good care of him when she's gone. I think some viewers get Jenny wrong, she's not the bad person who used Forrest but a damaged person who needed to get her own life together.

The big difference between Jenny and Forest was not their intellect but their home life. Forest had a loving mother who encouraged him and taught him to never doubt his abilities. Jenny had a father who sexually and physically abused her and such trauma can absolutely destroy some people for life. She loved Forest but did not believe that she was worthy to be loved herself.
The people who keep criticising her, who keep saying that she is leading Forest on or blame her for her behaviour, you really need to start looking into what damage sexual childhood trauma can do to people. Her entire feeling of self worth was damaged and if your entire foundation is violence, how can you make good choices. Putting everything on her shoulders is just wrong.
She is the most tragic character in this movie. And I love Forest for loving her.

You are misinterpreting Jenny. Because of the abuse she suffered, she has convinced herself that she isn't good enough for someone as pure as Forrest.

Subbed! The early 90s made the best comedy/dramas. My Girl, The Sandlot, this one, Sleepless In Seattle and A League of Their Own among others were absolute classics.

I agree with most of what has been said here. Jenny did love Forrest, so much so that she was terrified she would spoil his innocence. She told him at the beginning to do what she always did: to run. Only when she had Forrest Jr and could finally experience pure, unconditional love was she ready to take Forrest into her life. Tragically, too late. I see Jenny as symbolised by her house: stuck in one place (literal in the house´s sense, metaphorical in Jenny´s), surrounded by tragedy and pain, until Forrest tears down the walls. On the other hand, Forrest is the feather: floating through the world, guided only by destiny. The book is much more cynical, incidentally, and Forrest is not as pure. There is also a sequel book, Gump and Co.

For those of us who lived through this part of history, it's all vivid in our memories. I experienced the military during Vietnam and the hippie scene in the early 70s in San Francisco. From the 50s to the 80s was such a diversity of changing cultures that it is hard to imagine how it all happened. Without the stability of character that we see in Forrest Gump, it would easy to get lost.

Very nice commentary. I really enjoy you reacting to these older films I have grown to love. Another great film to add to your list, perhaps somewhat similar in tone is Big Fish (directed by Tim Burton and starring Ewan McGregor)

I think viewing the Forrest/Jenny relationship it often misunderstood on multiple levels imo. A number of people have commented on the damage to Jenny abuse had on her ability to feel she should be or could be loved, but I think there is another dynamic. It sits on a couple of levels imo. First is that often both sides of relationship, be it friend or other, can both love each other but one side may want it to be romantic love and the other may not. That doesn't invalidate Jenny's love for Forrest, it just means she did not love him romantically. I would argue she never really did, she just settled for a safe and devoted husband that would be a good father. The other is that love and affection for others can be nuanced and deeper than we often give it credit for. It doesn't have to be the 10 setting of "Love at first sight" or 1 of "We're just pals!" We can care very deeply for someone else and not want to have an intimate or romantic entanglement.

Gary Sinise character (Lt. Dan) became an inspiration for for wounded vets to the point where he started a foundation that supports veteran, first responders and their families. Lt. Dan is the real hero in this story! i love this movie and its in my top 3 but Lt. Dan is the hero

I think the reason she took so long to send a letter is because Forrest was running for years...she had no real way to contact him.. but I'm sure the news announced when he stopped running, letting her know when the best time to send the letter.
