You should react to Mean Streets. Morgan at his best.
I saw this as being a loose retelling of the story of Joseph when he was sold off to slavery. He gains favor with Potiphar, is wrongfully accused, spends time in prison, the prisoners he helps forget about him, until he is eventually released and the pharaoh puts him in charge of everything.
Obviously it is not a 1:1 comparison, but wrongfully accused, gains favor with the guards, still ends up in solitary for 2 months, but despite all of that he was just about the most powerful man there besides the warden.
If you don't know, Andy Dufresne is an analogy of Jesus Christ.
Look up: The Hidden Meaning of Shawshank Redemption.
Lil detail: the rock hammer hidden in the Bible...it was at the book of Exodus.
You need some Matt Dillahunty in your life.
Shawshank is one of those movies that, when you stumble on it while channel surfing, you stop and watch the rest of the film, no matter how many times you’ve already seen it.

My Dad's favorite movie... He always loved to recite Red's line "I guess I just miss my friend" in reference to all the people in his life who'd passed before him (younger siblings and friends)
He passed away last April 12th. Not a day has gone by since that I don't think about him, wishing he was still here.

It's been just over two years for me. I still miss him, at the strangest times and sometimes for no reason. A long time ago Mom took a picture of him standing between his kids and the ocean. That's the man he'll always be, standing between us and a dangerous world.
Andy always spoke about hope, while Red discouraged him from doing that stating that hope could drive a person insane. Andy knew that if Red got out, he may end up like Brooks. So he purposely left him with a scavenger hunt and made him promise to follow through. It was his way of looking out for his best friend. Love their chemistry! Truly a masterpiece.
Even more appropriate with the original ending. Originally the beach scene was not in the movie and it actually ended with the bus driving away with Red saying, "I hope"
"I dont believe you should be doing this to yourself Andy, hope is a shitty pipe dream." Later that night Andy escapes through a shitty pipe. 😊

Through the whole story, it follows Andy mainly, but in reality, as the original comment explains, it's Red's redemption in the end.
Stephen King is so much more than a horror writer. He understands humanity, and writes some of the best relationships in literature. This was a short story from back in the 70's, and made such a wonderful film. By the way, Red's joke about his name, though taken from the book, isn't a joke there because Red originally _was_ Irish - a big red-headed Irish dude. But the director of the film was more interested in getting the best actors and not with finding someone who looked "correct". Best casting decision ever.
I thought that when I fell crazy in love with SK's books, it was because I liked horror, but when I read other writers, I realized that no... it's Stephen King's touch with his characters and settings. This story was from Different Seasons, which was the same book that had "The Body," which was the story that became "Stand By Me"--this movie was spring ("Spring of Hope") and SBM was fall ("Fall from Innocence"). I swear, I can still do the opening paragraph of that story from memory. Another excellent choice was his first book, Carrie, with an excellent movie from the 1970s. (Alas, neither version of The Shining got the real feel of that book for some reason.)
They gave him the name "Ellis Boyd Redding" to justify the nickname "Red" for the movie. It was on one of his parole rejection forms.
I think the theme for the Shawshank story was "Hope Springs Eternal"
@@jamesweekley1087 Yes, it was the Spring story in the book "Different Seasons". The Summer story (theme: Summer of Corruption) was Apt Pupil. The Autumn story (Fall From Innocence) was "The Body", which became the film "Stand By Me". And the Winter story (A Winter's Tale) was "The Breathing Method", both the shortest and the weirdest one in the collection, as well as being the closest to a typical King horror story. Just as really great book, and the first one to let people see how King's talent extended to other areas than "monster horror".

For me, it's more Red's story than Andy's, even though you can make a strong case for either of them, or both. The tragedy that you see with Brooks is so important, because it shows you exactly where Red was heading, someone who had given up hope and had nothing left to live for. Red is able to find meaning in his life through his friendship with Andy, and it gives him the strength to carry on. That's something we all can learn from.
THIS! I’ve also always interpreted it as Red’s story and like to think that the moment Red finds out about how Andy escaped - is the moment we too as the audience understand.
if you think about it, Andy was innocent from the start, so it was never about his redemption, he did nothing wrong...... it's all about Red's redemption.
Red is the narrator.
That's how Red described it in the book. It was written in his "voice".
Stephen King is mostly acclaimed for his horror stuff, but the way he can plot a story out is greatly underrated. Both this and The Green Mile tie all the threads of their stories together so neatly, even while pulling the rug out from under their audience multiple times. FYI in the Shawshank novella Red was the narrator, just like in the movie. Which is why Andy could have his secrets.
Also, as an interesting aside, Red in the Stephen King novella was actually white. He was called Red because he was an Irish redhead. Malcolm X, as many know, was called “Red” because of his reddish hair.

@@moon-moth1 Touche, but I think what he was saying was that Stephen King is primarily known for writing horror novels thus his ability to write just a great story with great characters is not what you'd expect from him.
@@moon-moth1 The film flopped in cinemas. It was only when it was available in video, through word of mouth, that it grew in popularity. It topped the video rental charts for quite a while. That is how it became #1 on IMDB.

1994 was an incredible year for movies - Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Interview with a Vampire, True Lies, the list goes on and on.
I grasped the words "Get busy living or get busy dying" and held them close as a turning point in my life. If Andy can do it, so can I.

This is an amazing film, but Morgan Freeman's narration just puts it over the top. That man could read the phone book and make it sound good.
Always loved where when the Warden returned the Bible and tells Andy "Salvation lies within" the Warden later opens the Bible to see that it's where Andy hid the rock hammer.
…and the Good Book opens on “Exodus.”
This is easily, in my opinion, one of the best movies ever made. Amazing writing, amazing directing, amazing acting. Loved your reaction to it as well 🥰
The guy who said, "Reelin' them in" is Morgan Freeman's son, Alfonso Freeman...He was also the guy in the young Morgan photo.
A great stylistic nod to the characters:
When Brooks is released, the scene is shot from the outside looking into the prison. When Red is released, the scene is shot from the inside looking out of the gate, showing the difference in their outlooks.
Brooks’ white knuckling on the bus to Red’s loose hands, too.
Never noticed those things.

Stephen King is amazing at writing his characters, and their development.
There's many reasons this movie is unique and special. One reason is that the incarcerated are the good people and the prison officials are the bad people.
Film school 101: If the main character is enigmatic (meaning you don't know what he's thinking) then he's very likely NOT the main character, despite having more screen time than any other character. In this case, Red is actually the protagonist. The big clue is that Red is narrating the story from nearly the beginning.

I think when that new guy tells the story of who really killed Andy's wife, that's the one time in this movie when Andy really loses his cool. It's understandable because that's his one chance to win his release. But he makes a big mistake. The warden is engaged in all kinds of criminal activities, murder and bribery among them. Andy knows everything, including how much money is involved and where is it. There is NO way the warden would ever let Andy out of his control. There is no way the warden would allow Andy to walk away and if Andy had been thinking clearly he would have realized that.

This movie, I first saw, when in a video shop, dispirited by what was on offer, asked the guy in the shop, do you know of any good movies? Well, yes you all guessed, it was Shawshank Redemption.
he said, "I think this probably the best film around". After watching it the first time, I had to agree with him and even today, I have yet to see a better film. Just love Morgans golden voice.

When it first came out, I was in graduate school and desperately needed a day off. So I decided to see it even though it did not in any way look like my type of movie. But sometimes you just need to see a movie.
I was blown away. Still am. A nearly perfect movie.
Lesson of the movie: don't screw with nerds. They will figure out how to screw you back worse.
Fun fact : the warder voices Mr Krabs in SpongeBob Squarepants.
Clancy Brown voices Mr Krabs...he's the head of the guards, not the warden.

I feel you with the Green Mile comparison (I assume you know they´re both from the same director, Frank Darabont). I think the main difference is Mile is about despair, whereas Shawshank is about hope.

I always envy anyone seeing this movie for the first time. I wish I could watch all of the nuanced revelations of the character and plot expositions as a new experience again. It’s still one of those movies you can watch over and over and not tire of though.

I love watching people watch this film, it is full of hope. But here's some info for you, The Story is by Stephen King and is called "Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption" and as much as I love Morgan Freeman's portrayal of "Red", in the book he is called Red because he is a white Irish man with red hair.
One of the most impressive things Andy did, or rather didn't do: he never even hinted about his escape plan, not to anyone. He kept it a secret for almost 20 years. I can't imagine the self-control and self discipline that must have taken.
When I was in jail (Not Prison) all you had to do was hand the guards a little money and they'd bring in ANYTHING you wanted. Food, cigarettes, drugs, you name it. They don't get paid shit so they usually always take it. Once you get there the other people will tell you which guards to trust or not. And the cycle repeats itself. It's always been like that.
Great movie for sure. Your smile really lights up the room; that's a great gift.
I live about an hour from that prison. They let you pay to walk through it, you see the pipe from the movie, the beam where they carved their names, Andy's cell, a very real electric chair with over 360 executions to it. they turn it into a haunted house around halloween.

This is both Andy's and Red's story as seen by Red. We know nothing about them before jail except for Andy being a banker who shot his wife which led him to jail and Red being guilty of murder, that's it. It's narrated by Red and we only see what Red knew about Andy at the time, the things we DON'T see are the things he didn't know either. We're seeing the story as he lived it.
The wholesomeness in this movie was just onions-level overkill.
Also while you're at it, if you haven't yet, go watch the movie adaptation of The Count Of Monte Cristo starring Jim Caviezel.

This has been one of my top 5 favorites since I first saw it 25 years ago. I read a lot of Stephen King books as a teenager and this story was part of a collection of short stories in one of them. It was called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Years later, I was excited to see that a movie had been adapted from it. I still love watching this film and if I see it on tv, no matter how far into the movie it is, I always watch. It still stirs emotion in me, I think because we all long for our own redemption of sorts. Anyway, loved to see your enthusiasm as you watched it for the first time.

This is one of my all time favorite movies.
Now you just need to visit Shawshank (AKA The Ohio Reformatory) near Columbus, OH. It was used for several movies and you can walk the entire prison that is now just a museum. It's easily one of the favorite things ive visited in my life.

I love this movie, definitely one of my favourites and it's so close to the short story. One of the changes they did make was the ending that originally just saw Red on the search for Andy with his line that more than he hopes to see Andy again, he simply "hopes". Red had dismissed Andy's hope previously only to have it finally restored, and references the subtitle of the story "Hope Springs Eternal".

My favorite Easter Egg is Red telling Andy 'hope is just a shitty pipe dream'. That's some quality writing and foreshadowing right there.
I find it interesting that most people don't really care about Norton and Hadley until Tommy died, especially when you consider that had been their characters throughout the whole movie.
This is a movie that is on tv a lot, especially on weekend days. No matter when it is on, no matter what point of the movie it's on, I watch again and again. This is just one of those films. Great reviews. Your enthusiasm, energy and genuine enjoyment/excitement is contagious and appreciated.

The picture of what you thought was a young Morgan Freeman is actually a picture of Morgan's son. BTW, Morgan Freeman had been doing TV and movies for two decades before Shawshank. I remember him as the Easy Reader on a PBS educational series in the 1970s.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Once or twice a year on a lazy Sunday when I'm not busy I'll put this movie on, relax and get lost in the story.
27:19 this part reminds me of Monty Python's Life of Brian film, the part where the Caesar's talking about his friend "Biggus Dickus" the soldiers were trying not to laugh in his face,.. but couldn't help it,... you were making the same face they were trying not to laugh. 😂 great reaction to a classic!

Another fun fact for y'all, the name of the novella by SK is Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, and the movie was originally going to be named that too. They had to shorten it in the dailies because the casting director kept getting head shots and CVs from every actress in the country wanting to play Rita Hayworth (thinking it was a biopic)

All the Red stuff in the last 15 mins is just amazing, I must have watched it 50 times and it still gets me. Freeman is just amazing.
Watching you react to this film makes me smile the same smile I get every time I watch it. Like the reference to the Dumas' classic, The Count of Monte Cristo, this film has it all, injustice, betrayal, loyalty, revenge, and as the title says, redemption. Never noticed Andy being the only one without a hat as he arrived to the prison. Could it symbolize that his mind was not capable of being imprisoned and that it was always free?
