I've been using them for years. I think that most of the artists should invest in good quality paper instead of high quality grade paints 4x more expensive, that is the key!

    • @ave.martina

It goes: Quality paper first, then investing in a good brush, and after that you can paint with kids paint for all you care.
I don't know how true that is but it's what my workmate says to beginners. He's a painter.

I actually missed phthalo green and phthalo blue. I eventually kicked out cerulean blue (phthalo), sap green, chinese white, azo yellow light and payne's grey, then replaced it with transparent yellow medium, pyrrole orange, phthalo blue, phthalo green and oxide black.
Phthalo green, quinacridone rose, pyrrole orange and ultramarine make great mixing partners, and yes I mean all of them together, you have to tweak it a little but you can get great purples, blues, greens and cool greys out of a mix of pink and green and orange and ultramarine. Phthalo green became one of my most important colors.
I just wanted to state it, because I'm new to watercolor and only learned of it by not rinsing my brush thoroughly.
I hope it wasn't too much of a comment and please forgive any mistakes I'm from Germany.

I’m a watercolor teacher. I used to recommend Cotman to my students- I wanted them to use paint that was both affordable and good quality. After some careful comparison I decided Van Gogh is better and now I recommend this brand. Students are curious about professional brand, and while I encourage them to experiment, I also said that it’s fine if they stick with Van Gogh. It’s good paint! Spend your money on Arches paper instead!
The little pick on the back of the paintbrush is there to pry off the palette off of the lid. You have a second larger mixing space underneath! I’m

I have both sets. Schmincke is better for professional works, but Van Gogh is great for general art work that doesn't have to last for decades. And if you want better dispersion, just add ox gall, or Qor's synthetic ox gall, to your water.

Impressive! I just recently upgraded from Cotmans to Van Gogh and I love them. I bought a couple of individual pans of Van Gogh in January 2020 and I really liked them, so I saved and went for the 48 half pan set in a metal tin. I have one tube of Rembrandt, which is the higher quality line by the same company as Van Gogh, and doing a direct colour to colour comparison I actually prefer the Van Gogh.

I'm just a month in to learning watercolor. I have the typical tubes from the US stores. They seemed slimy and dried crust in the wells of my pallet. I figured they would be good to start with. I bought one tube of Van Gogh and saw the difference. Much smoother, colors are vibrant and dried closer to what I mixed. It's Van Gogh for me for the future. These are considered student grade paints here in Europe, but to be honest, they always confused me, too ^^'. The first watercolours I had were Pelikans, but the older version of this standard pocket box, which only had 12 pans instead of 15, was my second and I always loved painting with them 🥰. So much so, that I also got the muted colour set and the metallic/interference one. They're also vegan unlike the Schminckes' I started to build my new palette with (on which there are actually some Van Goghs still on :)) . It's cool to know that I can have good, reliable paints without oxgall in them (which, I know, is a just byproduct of the beef production, but I'm a vegetarian, so I'd love my Schminckes even more if they'd made their paints without that), that are almost as local to me as the Schmincke company is (Schmincke is from area of Germany as I am, Van Gogh's are made by the company Royal Talens, which is a Dutch one :))
Hope, y'all are doing okay and stay safe in these weird days and weeks.
    👋🤗😘 from Germany
P.S. that weirdly ended brush is supposed to be used to push out the pans out of the palette - though you have to be real careful while doing so😅

@@niazhannanwatercolors It most probably works much better for the scratches than for it's original purpose ^^' Mine got all bend out of shape, because I pulled all of my pans out and rearranged them so they sit in a similar order to how the colours in those opaque watercolour boxes used for school art classes here are arranged. Always do that with my colours, since I'm so used to that arrangement :)

Love mine (12+3). It’s the Sketch set which is made for Urban sketching. The brush is the perfect size for that, I don’t need a 8 or 10 brush on the go with a 8x 5, 3 x 5 sketchbook. The colors are ver good even on paper of less stature than say that of a Moleskine or Academy for the on the go artista.
I put that see through color card in the inner tray. Just pop out the mixing tray and stick it to the inner frame which can also be used as a mixing pallet.
First purchased a 6 tin of VG back in the 1990’s from a shop near the local Art College. Great set for on the go … and this comes from someone who primarily uses Asian sets, the origins.

Van Gogh has some fun colors to supplement my stash with. I think about anything looks good on Arches (and you can actually wash the paint off Arches if you don't like your painting). However, on lesser paper, the differences between Van Gogh and artist quality (Daniel Smith) become more apparent, mostly in terms of paint behavior. Does it layer? Does it cauliflower? Does it flow? But I've seen reviews of this Whiskey palette and I think Schmincke may have included a bad batch of paint because the paint isn't great.

Hi there! I used St. Petersburg / White Nights watercolours for the last 3,5 years and I love them. Unfortunately, I have to order them online and since I want to focus on shopping more locally in general, because I want to support the people who live in my city instead of big companies who don't even pay taxes in my country. My local art supply store only carries Lukas, Schmincke and Van Gogh. Although I own a few Schminckes ( and no, there are not cheaper in Germany, even if they're manufactured here) and Lukas 1862, I still prefer the super vibrant look of the Talens Van Gogh watercolours. Especially chinacridone purple red number 592 is almost white nights violet rose number 608, which is my most favourite colour overall, and I like to stick with one manufacturer I'm pleased with. Thank you for your review, because I know now that I can gladly purchase some paints next week.

Here’s one thing worth considering. While student-grade paint may look good now, it may not be archival and may fade and discolour over time. For many people who are just having a bit of fun, that might not matter. For professionals who are selling paintings, that matters a lot. The last thing they would need is reputational damage and collectors asking for their money back.
Professional grade paint makers put time and money into making sure that their paint will look just as good in a hundred years or more.

Are they rather more an artist (pro) quality than a student quality? Or say in an other way ; Are they an artist quality priced as a student quality? You see: From my oldest daughter I got a set of Daniel Smiths colors. She is the most proff in the family. When we speak about student quality I have only Aqua fine (Daler & Rowney) and Cotman form Winstor & Newton to compare with , and even if both this brand are good enough for my use, I have to say that van Gogh- if it is a student quality - has been my choice since I got them. It is unfare to compare Van Gogh to Schmincke. Van Gogh is great but at the student level, whereas Schmicke is one of the best profesional grade watercolors. Both are great products at their different levels.

There is nothing about being fair or unfair its just a comparison between a student grade and artists to see what we are missing!
Never limit yourself by listening to what people say rather be wild and free 😉

I believe that if you think seriously about painting, buying student grade paints is just waste of money. Sooner or later you start buying professional paints and will see how poor quality the student grade were. It happened to me. I have a drawer full of Van Goghs, Aquafines, Cotmans, Sonnets and God knows what else, and I know just one thing - I'll never use them again.

Donate them! There's tons of student painters that are too scared to waste professional paint on experimening. Waste of paints to sit in a drawer if you're never gonna use them again.

Many professional artists still include Van Gogh collrs in their palettes, they are rated student grade, but are actually also lightfast and very nicely saturated with pigments :) For the other brands- yeah, but also, when someone is just starting it's better to go for "just" Van Gogh for example than really expensive ones... and also invest more in paper and most importantly- give it the time and improve skills :) additionally van goghs won't actively fight beginners back ;)

I like you videos, but the music is very annoying. Who needs it?

You always have the option of turning the volume down. I find the music soothing. To each their own, important thing is to enjoy the paints

I am really hesitant to buy Van gogh 15 colors or/ Faber 24 colors, both are at the same price, but I am looking for the best?? 🥲🥲
