  • Van Gogh is one of my favorite paints weather it be student or artist grade. Royal Talens is a reputable brand in Netherlands and has been there for more than a century now.

    Van Gogh watercolors are vibrant and beautiful watercolors,but they are definitely student grade ones,they are in the opaque side because of the brighteners in them which you can see it clearly if you paint on a black paper so they are very hard to glaze .the Rembrandt line is their professional line and much cleaner and more transparent ,the funny thing is that when I made a lightfastness test for the Prussian blue of both lines the van gogh was very lightfast and held its color for three months without fading but the Rembrandt one faded in few days.

      Oh thanks for the info. I'm very much looking forward now to my Rembrandt.. but the Prussian blue is no surprise unpredictable pigment. I've read in handprint website that pb27 is can range from lightfast to fugitive.

      @R.F.S. 4 года назад +6

      Being more opaque, as you say, some of the Van Gogh watercolors maybe behave a bit like gouache... perhaps also for this reason in your test the Prussian blue was more lightfast than the Rembrandt line. Gouaches have a higher lightfastness.
      Take a look at this lightfast test: allthingsowlish.wordpress.com/2015/12/15/lightfastness-tests-royal-talens-van-gogh
      The Van Gogh Cerulean Blue (Phtalo), PB15 + PW6 faded madly! Even if both the pigments used in it are very lightfast! A strange thing! They should reformulate the paint and take off the white pigment (as they already did with some of other colors, such as the azo yellow, etc.).
      Anyway many of the Van Gogh watercolors are very beautiful and better than many other student grade paints from other manufacturers: I think the Van Gogh watercolors are halfway between the student grade and the artist grade.

      Van Gogh is not intended for black paper except for a few colors, they are very intense and you need to know with them, VG is different from all watercolors, they work with multiple layers, I use Rembrandt and I used VG and many watercolor masters use VG which is better than Nevskaye Palitra, especially earthy color, VG fits perfectly on Hahnemuhle paper-Cezanne, Leonardo, Collection, let's for example one of the most expensive Qor colors I've worked with 2 years are poetic but quite similar and look like oil when painted do it, then it is better to take oil and paint, the fact that you are rehearsing on a piece of paper is not a real test for colors just do it all, I've done it 101 times and Rembrandt proved to be the best, with this test you can see what the glaze will be like during drying, etc. etc, if they are better than New Pal then they are not student, especially the new Van Gogh with Dusk series and Oxid Black. Greeting.

      I guess the clue is in the name, Rembrandt van Rhin, a successful oil painter while alive and vangogh who we all know his sad story, shame most people do not know Rembrandts equally sad story.

    I love the Van Gogh paints. Yes, they use cheaper pigments and some of them can be kinda opaque if used a little thicker, but they are still very good paints, especially considering the price. I have a whole bunch of different watercolors, student as well as artists ones, and the Van Gogh paints remain a favorite of mine. People like to complain that they are difficult for glazing, but this is not a problem once you have figured out what paper they are compatible with. I personally love using them on Fabriano Watercolor Fine Grain paper, they are wonderful on that paper. While I agree that they are not artists paints, due to the type of pigments used, I find that they can compete with a number of artists paints when it comes to how well they rewet, pick up and flow. They're paints that are affordable enough to be a good choice for beginners, but good enough to be used and enjoyed by artists - I really do love them and would not wnt to miss them in my collection.
    Oh and by the way , very nice artwork you made there.

    Great painting demo, thanks for this great review. I hope you will upload some detailed tutorials using Van Gogh paints and I really like your style of painting and how you interact with the paints and materials. It’s a breath of fresh air seeing some reviews of watercolour while demonstrating painting a landscape. To be honest I am fed up seeing anime and flat illustrative/design style of painting with most reviews. I am glad that I discovered your channel. You have inspired me to re-evaluate Van Gogh paints, as I stored them away in favour of Rembrandt paints. I also made my own vegan-friendly paints for my own personal use and they are great too, but as I am learning to paint I want to ensure that my technical painting skills advance with the the best known materials such as Rembrandt paints. I also love how you have swatched the paints and done a painting using the corresponding paints, which I think is a brilliant idea. I see that you have punched some holes on the side of the watercolour paper, presumably to store them in a ring binder/folder. I will do that from now on and thanks once again for an informative review.

      Hello! :) Thank you for the nice words. I love painting landscapes and Im a nature person, and Im not really good and fond of anime. VanGogh are my favorite student grade paints, but of course, given the chance, Id choose Rembrandt. I initially was putting my swatches in my leather journal, so i had punched holes.. but now, i got around 50 reviews, they cant fit anymore.. so now, im thinking of another way to compile them.. :) I have planned to finish my remaining 30 sets for review till January or Feb, then Im gonna do the lightfastness test because summer starts by March here. Making detailed landscapes in between may also be inserted given the time. For now, I have some landscape tutorials in a playlist but not using van gogh yet there. the moods are gloomy and moody though, because it was the atmosphere when I did them. :)

    I love those pocket boxes, they're so small and easy to take along. I got three different of them, that basic set that you got there, one with muted colours (which are just beautiful) and one with metallics and inteference and metallic colours (which of course are a bit more gimmickiy, but look real nice on black watercolour paper). They are definitely far better than the Pelikan set I started out with (and still use, there's something really comforting about them acting so similar to those opaque watercolours we used to learn colour theory and mixing back in primary school) I know, they're probably not artist grade, but more of an intermediate medium :3. And they're definitely pretty achievable, at least here in Germany.

      yes, I agree. i also love van gogh and i love the texture, i find it friendly to every user level. I have a Pelikan set coming is it not worthit? I bought it because the palette remind me of the Portable painter. haha

      @@AllanJayQuesada It IS totally worth using (I still use mine A LOT), it's just pretty big ^^, the whole box is like 20×15cm and the pans are maybe two thirds of a gansai pan. I'm also not SO sure if there's any info on pigments and on the lightfastness. Though I got some smaller things hanging around the house for 4 or 5 years now and those haven't faded yet, so they're at least not super-fugitive (though the light isn't too strong here in Germany, so they would maybe work a bit different if you put them out into bright sunlight and leave it there ^^')

    An unpopular opinion you can or cannot agree with: if the are lightfast, I don't think it matters that much. Someone will find a way to work professionaly, addapt the paper or even sell their art with them. They have a little opaqueness going on and have sintetic pigment mixed in their composition, but some good artist could find a way to work around them, simply because they are resistent enouth. But that is just a possibility. If an medium quality pencil brand, for exemple, had this feature, I can garantee they would sell a lot more. If you must work with professional material, the most affordable in this category will be white nights, in most countries, with rembrandt as a close second

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Год назад

      Yeah, it all boils down to personal choice. The reason there are reviews and testings is to see both technicalities and style preferences of the reviewer. At the end of the day, the viewer chooses the one that best fits his/her budget, availability of material, and style. The lightfastness issue oftentimes is overlooked by the buyer of an artwork (especially in watercolor where it is susceptible), so the discretion, concern and responsibility depends in the artist. The best paper and style may or may not improve the paints' lightfastness, but personally, to be more confident in my paintings longevity, I'd choose to wisely select my pigments matched with the best paper i can find. 🙂

    VG is Intermediate, imho. Between Student and Pro. The REM greens are very bright with a light wash.
    I have both and the VG aren’t that less in pigment. The blues are gorgeous in both sets as well as the burnt Sienna.
    There’s a movie made using just VG paint for the backgrounds. Won some awards to boot.

      @AllanJayQuesada  10 месяцев назад

      Eventually, thatbwas what also Talens told me on email. That VG is in the middle and that they have a real student grade, which is the Art Creation. This is the reason why VG is so good and can really be confidently used by pros. Is that the movie for Vincent VanGogh?

    I disagree with the comments on the opacity of the Van Gogh line. They are primarily transparent. They are classified by Royal Talens as student/professional and I find this to be accurate. They rate high in light fastness and perform as well as MANY professional lines. For price point, they will carry a watercolor artist well into the professional level.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Год назад +1

      I agree. That's why i had to review it and show how transparent it is. I think some artists mistke the term opacity with vangogh's creamy texture. But yeah, this brand is between student and professional. That's according to Royal Talens. The student grade of Royal Talens is Art Creations. The pro grade is Rembrandt. VanGogh is in between. 😊

    The other two I got - which are the muted colours and the metallics - were 15 to 20 Euros here. I love the sturdy boxes and that they don't take up so much space on my ever cluttered desk ^^' (I'm just that chaotic :D)

    Have you ever considered selling a book of your drawings before you've painted them? Like a coloring book or a book of drawings colorists or painters with drawing skills could trace onto watercolor paper then paint them themselves?
    I might be wrong here, but I don't think there is much of a difference these days between artist and student grade paints anymore. 20,30,40 years ago I would insist on artist grade, but these days the pigments are the same and one cannot see a difference between the two. Almost all student brands are now lightfast and almost all of them are artist grade paints. Just the level 1 or 2 artist grade colors instead of 3, 4 and 5. I don't think any one could go wrong with any reputable student grade anymore.
    However, with that being said, I picked up some cotman for my great grandson a few weeks ago, maybe a month, who can keep up anymore; Anyway, they (pans) seemed so much less than what I remember them being 40 years ago. They had to be activated which defeats the purpose of buying pans in the first place. I stopped on the way home to get a tube of cotman and it seemed fine but the pans, no way. Not only did it have to be activated but it seemed weaker in pigment than I remember. Maybe I've been using daniel smith now for too long to remember accurately. But any other student grade paint seems a good buy these days

      Hi Philip. Sorry for my late reply.
      Yes, it was actually my dream to publish my own colouring book, particularly of local Catholic churches. But years after, my dream was granted in a different way. I was able to publish my church paintings through a book. (I uploaded here the preview). But today, i still would really want to fulfil my tracing or colouring book one day. Let's see if it will come true. 🤞
      Re student grades, yes, i agree on that. The difference to artist grades has become thinner, especially if you just look at them or at the swatches. Some say the vibrancy was due to brighteres and stuff, and it can be true. But it is also true that many superior student grades could work as fine as some pro grades. For as long as one is able to select trustworthy pigments, say PBr7 and PB29, Cotmans in tubes and VanGogh are great even if they're student grades. I believe the Cotman pans have deteriorated in quality when they started manufacturing it in China. I believe that the formula was supervised by the company, though, and not necessarily the fault of the Chinese factory. I

      I really believe that VanGogh has some better pigment choices so quality wise, im choosing Van Gogh.. But the quality and the quantity (full pans) of sonnet is also a good deal. • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад +1

      yes, pg7 is supposedly Phthalocyanine Green Blue Shade but some manufacturers use pg7 as Viridian which is confusing specially to beginners. PG18 is more expensive, so that's probably one of the reasons they use pg7. but they should've named it Viridian Hue to indicate that its an imitation.

      I'm not super happy with the color selection of white nights 12 colors so I'd choose this set instead because the selection balance, plus it has a perfect palette with brush. VanGogh is not a bad line at all and the difference to white nights is almost not felt. White nights is more transparent though.

      Different in so many ways. Prang is a quality school grade paints while van Gogh is top quality student grade paints. VanGogh provides pigment codes jn their paints making it transparent to which colors are lightfast and which are not. Prang being school grade has no details about to which coloring they use (Pigment or dye?) So there is no assurance to its lightfastness. While both perform well and have intense colors, my expereince tells that skme Prang colors fade, particularly their reds and violets. You may also watch my prang reviews. I have the 2007, and 2019 models and the comparison in 3 different videos. 😉
