Thanks for this. Van Gogh slots into that nebulous spot between student and artist grade for me. Royal Talens has three tiers, their student grade line I think is Art Creation, then Van Gogh, then Rembrandt. Haven't been disappointed in their Van Gogh line of art supplies so far, but I haven't tried their watercolors yet. Gorgeous work! This got me interested in the muted set.
That would make sense of these are middle tier because they felt higher quality than other student paints I've tried. Royal Talens has some great products!
Fun video. I like the Van Gogh paints. I have the Botanical set and some tubes, which are great. I have them all jumbled up in other palettes with my artist grade paints and like them for travel especially.
These would be great for travel! And yes, mine are jumbled up already, haha. That botanical set sounds nice, I hope that has some pretty colours in it!
I have used Talens paint for over 40 years, and their student range is very good quality in every type of paint and will work with their professional or artist grade. They are a thoughtful producer and I have never had a problem with anything they make. I even have a tube of oil paint in perfect condition that dates to 1987! A huge tube of capture mortuum which I could not get where I lived. I love the palette with they yellow and browns.
I've also been pleasantly surprised by the quality of their products. I just love their Amsterdam acrylic inks! I have the Rembrandt paints to review as well soon hopefully!
I very much enjoyed this video. I have the basics pocket set, and I really like it overall. My son's girlfriend also likes to use it, so that's a bonus. I absolutely love how your paintings turned out. The muted one is especially gorgeous.
Thank you! I imagine the basics set would be a lot more useful overall, though I do love getting the more unusual ones. The nature set is a bit TOO unusual though, lol.
Loved the video for so many reasons, I love your paintings and always love your choice of music. Many years ago, a friend gave me a Van Gogh pocket set. Not sure what happened to the paints but the palette now holds my Prima Marketing Tropicals set. Those half pans have fit perfectly. The box had a bit of a different layout. Love that you can use one end of the brush to remove the mixing area. I couldn't tell if you're brush would work the same way. Some bargains are so good that they're a bit of a steal. Again, thank you for a great video.
Thank you, that’s interesting to know the Prima pans fit in; I might need to try my ones out. It didn’t even occur to me to use the end of the brush to prise them out, OMG that is so obvious now I see it. I’ve been using a palette knife this whole time! 🤣
You can also use the chisel tip from the brushes’ cap to remove the pans from the pallet. That’s actually what they’re meant to be. Amazing paintings by the way. Congratulations
The value on this sets is the best on the market! Not only they offer great selections of quality colors, they also provide a decent brush and the mixing tray. Versatility (great for both beginners and experienced artists), quality and great value!
The shades of nature palette had way to many brown tones, there is still colors in nature lol I'm interested to see how you split these colors up and make two custom palettes with them. I think the color choices are weird for both because if you just picked up one to use your very limited. Wonderful paintings!
I've mixed them all up and next video (if I can get it out on time) will have the new configurations that I came up with. Hopefully a bit more useful! 😊
Earth tones & muted colors are my favorites. I love my little Van Gogh muted palette. Glad I didn't buy the Shades of Nature. I also have the Museum palette but have yet to swatch it out. It has a nice range of colors. And I have 18 tubes-no guilt in playing with them since they're so cheap. Your muted picture is GORGEOUS!
The nature palette was definitely a bit odd/limited compared to the muted one! You’re excellent with coloring mixing so you made do in your paintings- they turned out very pretty. I can see why they’re a popular student grade set because of the quality. Some student grade sets are soo awful! I’m happy to see you got some extra colors (blues and maybe a red?) and excited for the next video on these😈
Thank you! I am working on it as we speak! I think these are actually a little higher level than student grade, as shown with their better quality. Not bad at all!
I am impressed that you were able to create a great little painting from that nature palette. What strange color combos! But in typical Becky fashion, you conjured something lovely. 💕
Thank you for your video. I have a couple Van Gogh watercolour paints but the few I have are mostly multi pigment which is not what I prefer. Please let me know if those are made with more than one pigment?
Happy new year becky, beautiful paintings. My dad bred budgies when we were kids and they were so tame he used to hold them and we could kiss them on the head very gently, special memories, I've been painting birds all week for some reason
Happy new year! I love painting birds; I am going through a phase with them at the moment too, haha! Budgies are lovely, and there are wild populations here in parts of Australia - usually the green and gold ones (true Aussie colours!)
I bought the nature set and am waiting for it to arrive. Envious of the price you paid. Loved your paintings. ❤ I am a grey haired beginner with no knowledge of visual arts. I assume the nature set was sold as an addition to sets lacking in earth colours, not as a stand alone palette. At least that is how I plan to use it. I have a beginner watercolour book titled “Watercolour With Me In the Forest”. First project: paint two acorns using yellow ochre, raw umber and burnt umber. 😂 I’m just learning what those colours look like.
Oh yes, I would consider these as add-ons to their original set which has more standard colours for a palette of this size. But I really like the colours in the nature one too so really one can never have too many paints, haha. I hope you enjoy your set, and I've heard good things about that particular book. I am sure it will be really helpful and the projects sound like fun. I'm tempted to get the book at some stage as well! Best of luck on your watercolour journey; it is such a fun medium and I love it dearly.
Thank you, I was really happy with these paintings too, especially the wheelhouse building - I'm quite proud of that one! 😆 Wildlife would be a better name for that palette!
I use the same ink by ranger, I use a misty type apparatus that I made myself which is very like the tin jolts syamping platform I bought one off ebay since they cancelled out manufacturing watch a misty video you’ll see what I mean and what I use I didn’t want to pay 100$ or more to actually buy it so I made something like it which cost me around 20$ if that much
Sounds interesting! I swear everywhere has sold out of the reinkers but a local store said a shipment should arrive at the end of the week. I hope so because my stamp pad has run out in the meantime, doh!
The two paintings are wonderful. They should be framed. I have only a handful of Van Gogh watercolors, so my experience with them is limited, but they impressed me here. I'm not convinced the design of these pocketboxes works, though. Seems like quite a bit of wasted space. Do you find there are advantages to this container? Or is the common metal tin preferable?
Thank you! Of course I did them in my sketchbook and would be loathe to cut them out, but I am very happy with them overall. The boxes would be better if they had three equal rows of half pans, and therefore more paint colours! But they're nice and light for travel and the little brush is actually pretty good too. I guess plastic has the advantage of less weight, but I do still love a metal tin. I'll use either really.
Hehe, it almost feels to me like the pallets were named in an opposite order - the natural should have been named muted and vice versa. That would make a lot more sense!
Your second painting was so lovely Becky. I also love your music. I have a 15 half pan set in a similar palette which you have inspired me to bring out of the depths of my drawer again:)
I really want to try an etchr. But I've been eyeing these palettes so I was super excited to catch this! I have the waffle flower so I'm excited to see you use them and get ideas
I do like the Etchr sketchbooks, the paper in them is really great for watercolours. A bit pricey though! I liked using the Van Goghs; I think they're nice palettes 😊
The fact that there's only one blue bothers me greatly since I use it all the time to create darker tones... And the lack of a proper red also was kinda of a let down since I was expecting better from van Gogh... But all the colours looks lovely, I rather liked the muted set even if it doesn't look much as a muted one with the bright rose and gamboge xD Great art as always 😊
I was whinging the whole time I was working on the paintings, that there wasn't nearly enough blue for my liking, lol! Apparently sky isn't a "Shade of Nature", at least not according to them! 😂
Boom! Your second painting went from teenage stage to awesome like a quick change artist 😁 Very nice paintings! The nature palette colours look like they're to paint one of those pictures of the autumn leaves on the ground, you know the ones? Even the green- there's usually patches of green on some leaves. No blue though so guess no leaves in puddles 😆 I get suckered/ inspired by those pics every year and I could see trying to justify a palette for it, but no blue?! I'm sorry but blue is my drug of choice 💙
Thank you, and blue is an integral part of life; I must have it! It's amazing how much more difficult things are when an essential primary colour is missing. 😵
I got the muted pallet. I totally love it. With the brights in there it is very versatile. I was considering the nature one, but dropped it as I got all but two of the colours in there, and yes I thought it was too heavy on the yellows as well. :) I love both paintings you did with them.
50 Dollars?! That sounds like a heck load of money :/ Those usually cost like 25 € here in Germany, but you can get them for like 15 - 17 when they're on sale, it's the reason I usually suggest their basic 12 + 3 pocket box whenever someone asks for a good starter set for students :3 I guess taxes and shipping do actually add up for y'all Down Under -.- 10 dollars, though, really sound like a steal then, even if you snagged like one of those most unbalanced sets (the shades of nature and violets and pink boxes are really the worst when it comes to balancing them as standalones) ^^' I own the old 12 basic colours, the muted colours and the metallics/interference colours. Their titanium buff, their oxide black and their dusky colours even crept unto my regular Schmincke palette :3 Oh, and since I totally forgot that: Those artworks look so so soooooo awesome 🥰
Thank you! This is $50 Australian, so that is roughly around €35 at today's exhange prices...still on the expensive side but then everything that comes from Europe is going to be more expensive here. So my $10 finds were bargains, haha.
I hate that brush so much. The bristles itself are actually quite good and it comes to a nice point... But it simply won't hold together and I drop it into the paint water all the damn time! It fills me with rage every time I use it
Oh yes, I didn't film it but one of mine is doing the same thing, and has fallen into the water pot a whole bunch of times! Rage inducing indeed. 😂 The other brush seems fine and actually fits together properly.
It is alarming that you found some of these to be "chalky" because it suggests that Van Gogh may be slipping. Many regard them as the best "student grade" and there are video comparisons with Rembrandt that show very little difference. I hope that Talens isn't cutting quality to keep up with the increased demand for WCs and new products
It was the first batch they made during Kickstarter that had dodgy glue, and my A5 version also fell apart. Etchr were great and sent out a replacement. But of course this second A4 has been awaiting use and two years later I opened it, lol. Oh well, it seems fixed for now! 😂
You’re so talented! I love your videos.
Thank you so much! ❤
Oh that is a steal of a deal and love both palettes and the colors in each.
I am so glad I found them!

Thank you so much! 😊

I loved your paintings 👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you 😊
I’ve been wondering about these! Thanks for sharing. Loved your paintings! I wonder how they compare to Cotmans?
Thank you! I haven't used Cotmans in a long time, but I'm pretty sure these are better.
By Cotmans you have to spray or make wet the colours
By Talens van Gogh colours you can use them instandly or make them wet
I bought the nature set and am waiting for it to arrive. Envious of the price you paid. Loved your paintings. ❤

Hey Becky I’ve been looking for these stamps where did you get them, some I found were really expensive
