  • In today's video, I will review this special set of Van Gogh watercolour paints, which come in a bright orange box and is the Van Gogh Museum Edition. There are twelve half pans of paint in this pocket box (an ideal size for travel), and there's also a mini travel brush inside. What are the colors like? Let's find out!

I can't find the set in Australia as I purchased it in Greece, but The Art Shop has individual pans which you can find here: theartshop.com...
The set is available at Blick, USA: www.dickblick....
The cheap but great sable brushes I used, from Amazon Australia (affiliate link used)
They come as a set in a nice zipper case.... amzn.to/47i7PXY

Chinese white is a mixing white and not meant for highlights, so it makes sense that it frustrates you when trying to use it that way. Lindsay Weirich has a video on the use of white watercolor where she explains the pros and cons. The rabbit turned out very nice!

I think it's just one of those things I'll never be fond of, but I do use a lot of white with acrylics and oil paints. Even then I like Titanium White the best. 😊

Hi Becky, pretty paints pretty pictures. I like making pastel colors with white. That hookers green made me think of Christmas trees 🌲. You did a great job painting. I don't have a favorite as i like all three critters. I too am curious as to what flower the froggy was sitting in. I liked rabbit a tad more than the mouse. But all three were great!

Very lovely paints and the colours are gorgeous! I did notice that the end of the brush is perfectly made for all the little gaps to get the paint pans out and even the mixing part has a gap, might come in handy to be able to clean it :) I think the cute little mouse was my fave, and I think that's a bunny and not a hare, the ears look to small for a hare but I'm no expert lol great video once again thank you! :D

Your hare turned out beautifully! I found them so hard to do. My one looks creepy because I couldn't figure out how to do the eyes, so I didn't do them, well, except for the shape of where the eyes are in the watercolour, but it's very very surrealistic. Still, I like that it's creepy lol. I'll have to watch this again and learn. Thanks Becky 😊

Lovely demo, Thanks! I ❤ Van Gogh paints, very good quality and good orice too. I would ditch the white and add an ultramarine blue. I live the rabbit/hare, even with the dramatic background. It shows off the colours beautifully ❤. Zinc white is better for mixing pastel colous. You are right in nit exoecting it to be transparent. I bet you can get some decent pastels out of those colours by mixing them with that white. For highlights, I have recently been using Pilot Milky pens in white, which are very opaque and good to use on the go. Unlike Poscas, they are water based, and can be painted iver if needed. BTW the brush has a thinner end which can be used to lift the white mixing palette, so you have more mixing space. Great video, thanks Becky!

    • @BeckyTregear

Very cute little set, sadly I already have these colors so I can't justify getting the orange box set. Though I can vouch that the colors work well together in fun ways. I'd have added at least an ultramarine or something to the range if it were me instead of the white if I was being particularly picky. I have the 48 color set that I swapped out the cerulean hue with their Rembrandt Cerulean, and the Cobalt Blue hue with actual Cobalt Blue. Then I added a Rembrandt Cadmium Red just to round things out better and I'm much happier with the big box of colors. At least it's all made by the same company if nothing else. I'll have to try the colors from the orange palette just as a range on their own sometime!

    • @BeckyTregear

I’m not surprised you were frustrated with the white water colour, that one can’t do what you were trying to make it do with highlights.
But I’m really pleased you liked the rest of the paints, they are underrated.
As a choice of colours in a museum set I thought they did a good job of giving something us different to make us think, but still useful. Would be interesting to see you try and rework a Vincent sketch using those colours.

I have the 12+3 Van Gogh "pocket" set. Tbh I didn't like it at first. To me, it lacks character, has zero granulation, does not flow well, and is a little chalky. Great review :-) some of those colors are very reminiscent of the van Gogh muted palette… The Naples yellow, the turquoise, the indigo, and the yellow ocher, Are all in that pallet as well. However I’m very intrigued by the permanent lemon and the orange, and red… Those are pigments I have not seen them used before. i’m wondering if they’re Indian yellow is the same PY 83, because I thought the one in the muted palette was a two pigment mix… I’m interested now to know if these colors and their pigments are different in this set.… Lord knows I don’t need another watercolor palette lol
