  • I just bought a 12 + 3 half pans watercolor palette by van Gogh. Here are my first impressions on it, it’s pluses and minuses. Swatch with me all the colors and compare them to other watercolors! I am creating my unique palette with a specific color selection of Rembrandt and Van Gogh watercolors.

    Thanks for this review. I agree, white needs to go ( except if you want to create pastel colours). I would change it for a true Phtalo Blue. Disappointment about Burnt Umber and Sienna containing PBk11. It would be so easy to make them monopigment. Your mixes were beautiful 😍 and show how versatile these colours are.

    Interesting to see a comparison between old and new versions. We do not know what motivates companies to change the recipe of their paints. Could be a good practice to move forward monopigmented and do not add white.

      I appreciate companies moving forward and finding pigments that do better, especially in term of lightfastness. We all wish for watercolor pieces that stand hundreds of years.

    Very interesting to see 😊 I think they probably used a very opaque version of PY42 for their Naples yellow reddish and that's why it looks so much like they've used white in there. Quinacridone red is one of my favorite colours, sad that you hadn't enough space. I don't own a turquoise tube of Van Gogh but I had the same problem with other tubes by nearly all brands. Depending on the pigment, some like to separate more. My best advice is use a toothpick to mix in the tube before squeezing out. This way you can reach the pigment on the bottom and mix it with the binder. Works really well.

    In case no one said this yet, the white spots are because of oil. The paper absorbed oils from your hand so the paint isn't absorbed in those areas.

    Individually and with Schmincka, not all colors are masterful, everyone is just smart on a piece of paper and they have two children's pictures, edit which picture to see your mastery and then criticize something. I use Rembrandt and Schmincke and in the beginning I wanted to throw them away, colors do not paint alone, it takes years of hard work to achieve a level of mastery if someone is not ultra talented and masters one of the most difficult painting media within a couple of years.

    (just a note - van gogh is pronounced "van GO" like to go somewhere. the gh is silent. in dutch though it's more like "fan Hohh" with a gutteral h on both ends. but american english it's "GO" ) : )

      Cool, yeah I've heard how Americans pronounce "van Gogh". I am not American, English is not my first language. I speak 6 languages and I don't care for the accent or the little mistakes in pronunciation. Correcting people is not something we should do especially when they don't ask for it, most of the time it discourages them to continue speaking the foreign language. Anyways.. it was Maimeri Venezia, student line of Italian watercolors that is now discontinued. But I suggest you to get the Maimeri Blu if interested in this Italian brand.

    • @lurklingX
      @lurklingX 2 года назад +1

      MARIЯAM sorry I wasn’t trying to upset you. And it wasn’t about the language, more about art brands and artist names. People I know have never heard the right way so they’re always shrugging when they say things, and saying “I don’t know how to pronounce it“. you know it’s really funny about corrections. A lot of people complain that nobody ever corrects them or tells them anything. And then other people get totally triggered and feel like they have to defend themselves. 🤷 so yeah, sorry you took offense.

    • @mariram
      @mariram  2 года назад

      @@lurklingX no worries no offense taken ;) there are actually many art brands we pronounce differently in EU and USA, like Arches or Hahnemühle. Even of Ecoline (the same company that produces van Gogh) I've heard three different pronunciation.

    • @edzejandehaan9265
      @edzejandehaan9265 2 года назад +4

      There is no "right" American english pronunciation of the name van Gogh, it's just a consequence of not being able to make the right sounds.
      The dutch pronunciation is the only right one, and people who speak a different language can make of it whatever they like.

    • @NelaDunato
      @NelaDunato Год назад +1

      @@edzejandehaan9265 I know this is an old comment, but it always cracks me up when Americans try to "correct" pronunciations of European names. It keeps happening on my videos as well. Sit down Karen, you're wrong!

    This is because the colors are made in China, every pan made in the Netherlands is wrapped in a paper wrapper where it says every pigment, the color is semi-opaque, opaque, transparent, the difference is huge for colors that come from the Netherlands and have nothing to do with Chinese Van Gogh.

      @@wiktoriatluvi It is still the old set of Van Gogh's pans, the new one always has Chinese white, I don't know what is disputable and Rembrandt sets in the pans do not contain all Chinese white or opaque white, titanium white ...., VG colors are very intense and it is better take them in tubes than in pans, each color behaves differently, if we are actually in traditional watercolor there is no white color in any form, the ancient Egyptians used zinc white but it is obsolete because it darkens over time, when I see this experimentation with colors I immediately recognize the amateur, Rembrantd (I work with them + Schmincke Galaxy) are one of the best colors on the market with Schmincke ....
