I actually didn't think FF15 was that bad. It definitely had a lot of issues, but the bones were great. It had arguably the greatest, most sympathetic villain in any Final Fantasy ever.
As opposed to FF13 which was, and still is to this day a god awful, terrible final fantasy game.

    • @TheHeroRobertELee
      @TheHeroRobertELee 2 года назад

Ff13 will always be the worst. Followed closely by FF12. Honestly FF has been nothing but downhill since their merger and since Tetsuya Nomura took the reins.

    • @TheHeroRobertELee
      @TheHeroRobertELee 2 года назад

I actually agree with you. Sephiroth is still the COOLEST villain, but Ardyn is in my opinion, despite the problems with the main FF15 game, the greatest FF villain of all time. He was actually the good guy, but because he was a good guy and made good decisions, he was cursed and made into the villain. He was a slave to his fate and was powerless over his destiny. Betrayed by his own brother and made into the bad guy, and yet forced to play the part all so Noctis could ascend the throne and give his life.up too for a better future. And he had to play that role just so.he could pass on.
Ardyn was so great, one could even argue that he was the true hero of FF15 because it was his plan, and his role, that set Noctis up to become King. Bahamut, was the true villain in my eyes.
Then again, that's really the entire message and story of FF15. Are we powerless over our fates? Is destiny real? Do we have control over our futures? And FF15 says no, not in this world. Which is an interesting concept to explore - living in a world where there really is no free will. Where the gods that play mortals lives are the true villains. I'd be pretty interested in fact, to play a sequel where you confront those gods.
Like I said, a lot of problems with FF15, but it had good bones.

As one of these first timers for final fantasy series, I came into this game completely fresh last year (it was in a steam sale) so I the windows edition with all the updates and, more importantly, I had no hype or expectation to what this might be.
To be honest, it blew me away. It was one of my escapes during lockdown. Despite some minor gameplay flaws, I still found it an enjoyable, emotional rollercoaster of a game where I didn't expect to enjoy the company of these characters as much as I did and it's fair to say that the ending broke me a little (as did some of the DLCs). And even now, I drop back in to play of the post story game, just for a laugh. It’s turned this person into a final fantasy fan, so I’ve started going back through the other games now.
In order to get the best out the story, I’d recommend; -
    1. Play Chapter one.
    2. Watch Kingsglave
    3. Play chapter 2 and 3
    4. Watch brotherhood
    5. Play the Gladiolus and Prompto DLCs at the appropriate place (you’ll know when).
    6. Play till the end and then play Ignis and Ardyn’s
    7. Ready the book and wish they’d finished those DLCs.
    8. Be surprised that Comrades is quite good.
Is it worth playing in 2021? I’d say Yes.

i mean, you can't say the criticism wasn't well deserved just because you say it's beautiful, maybe this game is your guilty pleasure but not mine since its full of plot holes and the combat was reduced to just holding B or Circle and warping, the way the handled the magic was abysmal it got downgraded to throwing magic balls and not actual elemental effects coming out of your hands, Prompto, oh god prompto, i just wanted to kick him out of the Regalia and continue without him, he's so cringe and i just don't like him, the game is open world but becomes linear after the first time you meet Ardyn, among other things this game it's a travesty at least FF 13 trilogy still felt like final fantasy and had soul, which XV does not

    • @dethaddr
      @dethaddr 3 года назад +1

I'm thinking these guys never figured out you can get out of the car any time you feel like it. The world is only empty when you're walking. Once you have the Regalia, it all depends on where you park it. Once you do the car quests and get the BIG upgrade, this is the funnest FF ever made. Prompto can be pip-squeakish at times, but there's some crucial scenes that give you a ton of insight to why he is that way. Once you understand, he's not so bad. Gladio is only an ass because it's his job to guard the King, and he wants you to take your responsibilities seriously, which Noctis seldom ever does.
Basically, my whole advice is to NOT do the main plot until you've juiced every ounce out you can. Once you go to Altissia, it's a straightforward story pretty much the rest of the way and you will lose the "sandbox" feeling that makes this so great in the beginning.

I believe you when you say you are not a Final Fantasy "enthusiast".
(Enthusiast is an incredibly weird and unweildy term for fan btw)
Instead of mocking or making fun of you (which you would 100000000% deserve) im gonna ask you to please for the love of f!cking god play 6, 7(possibly the single greatest piece of fiction humanity has ever made except for LoTR and Star Wars and im not gonna lie it's really f!cking close), Crisis Core (dont bother with this one if you dont wanna play 7, its a prequel to it) Tactics (if you have even a passing interest in TRPGs please god play Tactics holy f!ck), 8, 9 (the second best Final Fantasy story IMO and probably the best all around game in the franchise), 10 International (extra content), 10-2 (obviously a sequel to 10 only play it if you already played 10 to get the most out of it) 12 Zodiac Age (extra content), or 14. 15 easily pales in comparison to all of those games.
And dont be too impressed/put off by graphics, they dont matter. At all. For example the remake of 7 looks gorgeous but f!ck me is it a VASTLY inferior all around experience than the original and absolutely hideous 7. But the original 7 is so good that even its, by comparison dogsh!t, remake still kicks the piss outta almost every other game i've played for the past 30 years.
Another example of the utter worthlessness of expensive graphics is that almost all of the best games ive ever played include games like Terraria, Stardew Valley, and two games I can literally play for eternity, Minecraft and Rimworld.
In fact the better a game looks the more suspicious I become of it.
Also Bravely Default 1 and 2. They're both great as well.
15 is NOT a bad game it's just a TERRIBLE game when compared to its greater franchise.
But if graphics is something you really like 12 and 14 are downright gorgeous and make it really really easy to get absorbed into their insanely well crafted and deep worlds. But 12's story is literally a slightly more nuanced Star Wars and 14 is an MMO that is both paid for content AND requires a monthly $10 subscribtion fee. Its easily worth it (ive bought all the retainers and a sh!tton of cosmetics and dyes) but it does get expensive. It has a free trial, sure but it gets even better during Heavensward which i believe is in the trial BUT it takes a while to get there. 14's base game is good but it's a tedious grind if you're not living in the world or just taking your time to enjoy it.
Final Fantasy is easily the greatest video game francise. Even Final Fantasy's stinkier titles are still AMAZING epxeriences cause frankly the developers actually give a sh!t about what they're doing. Sure some single games are better than most Final Fantasies (Like GTA5, Witcher 3, Pokemon HGSS and B2 and W2, and BoTW) but IMO Final Fantasy's best are the best games ever made. 7 and 9 are still almost perfect masterpieces and will likely never be equaled for either a long long long time or ever. In fact, this medium has been slowly declining. There are some really high spikes (BoTW is the best example) but gaming overall (especially AAA titles) is far worse than it used to be. Which is fine. There are still many new amazing games and I have no doubt that there will be enough great games to keep every human that has access to them very happy.

More games really should add in features like taking unique photos of your journey and having characters by your side the whole way through (even while doing things where normally no new dialogue would be found such as the mentioned cheering on during fishing) It probably was the main thing that made my experience with the game so great, and what made the characters feel real.

I am a FF fan and have played FF6-FF10 then had a break from FF went I started working full time ... but then came back to FF after a few years to give FF15 Royal Edition a go! And I am glad I did! It is definitely a bro road trip but why not? FFX-2 was an all-girl affair! I was amazed at that freedom they gave you in the world of FF15 and the dynamics of the day/night cycle. The magic system was a bit different and limited but the physical combat was fantastic .... I played the FF7 remake after this and I have to say I preferred FF15 phase attacks of Noctis to Cloud ... they were visually stunning and made you feel really powerful at times.
I could see where Square Enix was going to try to expand the IP with the DLC and tieing in other media but I did not think that works well - especially the exposition of the characters coming well after the original game in the form of DLC. FF7 and FF10 were both masterful in the fact they let you get into other characters backgrounds if you wanted to explore that route. in FF15 this came in the form of DLC which not everyone played.
Also, the freedom offered here and the hotel EXP bonuses almost make many enemies a one-hit kill joke after half the game in my playthrough you can earn a lot of exp then go to a certain hotel to get a 2 or 3x exp bonus ... after this you are pretty much a walking God.

FF15 is absolutely a disappointing game, but it's also in my personal top 3. The fragmented way its story is told is frustrating, the combat isn't the most stellar, the moment-to-moment gameplay is nothing to write home about. But oh my god, the wonderful character writing between the main four is such a huge carry for this game and I love it so much. I've been revisiting it lately and I love it as much now as I did back when I first played it.

@@reliableprezI mean I'm very confident in saying without any idealization of what I wanted XV to be its still a very poor game.
The structure of it is all over the place where I feel like the game design was what a bunch of undergrads would come up with. The map is very boring with little to do and is empty space and thematically there is only 3 environments, One desert, one is a tiny corner of the map which is a swamp, and the rest is a giant field with some tiny forests scattered around it. Even with the complete package and all DLC when playing XV I think of two things "Why does it feel like im playing a developer demo for an engine" (thats because XV is essentially a tech demo for the engine packaged as a game) and "why am I not playing a better action/open world/ story driven game?".

This was an incredibly well made video and I could see that a lot of effort and love was put into it.
You summarised it perfectly at the end. To me, Final Fantasy XV was my entry and I got it way back on its release. The only way I knew any FF characters was through Kingdom Hearts. I thought I would take the jump as the game wasn't turn based, but action based, which is exactly my style. But as you said, the game had received updates over and over, changing what it was from the beginning. And to be completely honest, my first try was...more lackluster than I expected from what I had seen previously. Nothing 13, but other footage. The story pacing got me the most as well as the inability to switch the characters. Weapon switching also felt a tad slow, but that is just because I am used to play Devil may Cry and Bayonetta a lot, which have a vastly different pacing. I played through the game again two years ago when all three dlcs were out and...
    I liked it.
While some of the glaring flaws you mentioned were still there, the inclusion of the stories fleshed out the characters a lot more for me. Since it was my second playthrough, I played them at the corresponding time the event took place in the main game. And, no exception, I bonded with the cast a lot more thanks to them.
Now that there is the royal edition, I might just give the game a third try. Not to mention, I still never finished comrades, thanks to me never finding any.
Wonderful video. And a belated happy new year to you.

I saw this video on my recommended page and clicked on it. I have been replaying all the final fantasy games I ever played and finished 9 this weekend, which also was the game that introduced me to JRPG's when I was just 6 years old. I know it is an unpopular opinion but did I love final fantasy 15! It is one of the very first games I ever bought at full price after saving up, I never as a kid had money to buy new games and always borrowed from friends or saved up after a birthday and bought a game that went on sale. I absolutely loved this game and to this day I have happy memories of this game. It might have had flaws as you point out as well, but god did I love the main cast. I was thinking of revisiting 15 as well somewhere this summer and your video has me itching to play. Thank you so much for the work you put into this video and thank you even more for me reliving those happy moments of me as a 20 year old dude buying this game with his very first serious job check.

I first got the game a year ago, the royal edition was on an amazing sale on PlayStation plus and that caught my eye. I looked into the gameplay and decided I wanted to try it out. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and I enjoyed the story. And I’m also someone that likes the ending because it hits so hard in emotions. It’s so sad yet sweet. And the relationship between the guys is just amazing. The boss fight in Altiscia (don’t know how to spell it) is the MOST EPIC fight I’ve ever experienced in a game cinematic wise. Nothing was really perfect, but when I learned the fact that this game’s development was very rocky I was very forgiving to its short comings and really appreciated what it came to be. I may be in the minority but I don’t mind. I enjoy the game a whole lot and it’s pretty much introduced me to the final fantasy series.
After learning everything about the development, I wish that FF15 and Versus 13 could somehow coexist. I really like both concepts wish they were both fully fleshed out.

One of the best games in the series and I love them all. Playing tactics and three right now. FF has always been an innovative series, I mean each one takes place in its own unique universe. Tactics is still one of the best games ever created. It is the modern version of chess. The complaints about the story are mostly bs, either they are too young to remember the older ones or are so wrapped up in nostalgia that they’re blinded to the fact that a lot of the story lines are hit or miss. I mean whoever talks about 8? They remind me of the hipsters who would turn on their favorite band because they became popular. RPG’s were dying. Unless you grew up playing them, there can be a steep learning curve. What 15 really did was open up FF to the wider culture, which often causes a backlash from the niche fans who feel they have lost the ability to think they are better than others. FF does a lot of innovation that is crazy and industry altering but if you have played the games you realize that they have always been hit or miss in their innovation, some of it works and some of it doesn’t. Could it been better? Definitely. Could have anyone else mainstream RPG’s to a modern culture that doesn’t prioritize math. Definitely not. I love RPG’s with a passion but I also understand that unless they innovate then they will are a dead genre. Before 7 came out they had stopped releasing the new FF games in the west. It took ten years to get this one released for the same reason. Video games are today’s biggest art form and are some of the only universal artistic expression left. The ones claiming to be the most ardent fans are also the ones causing RPG’s not to be released. Good job guys, thanks for all the games that you have been complaining about not getting released, not getting released, because you care more about being popular with your community than being appreciative that your favorite hobby now has normies playing it.

I don't know if other past FF games have done it, but I loved how you literally saw Noctis grow up. At the end, he was older, wiser, composed and more thoughtful. The overall story had a Shakespearean/Greek gods vibe to it. Being punished for the sins of your fathers and God's forcing you to clean up the mess they made.

While the combat wasn't something deep, it was possible to get sort of a half 'n half of a mixture between action and turn-based, although the turn based was just the game going into slow motion (a thing you can see they put into FFVII Remake combat system) but it was just pure fun constantly. The exploration, oh man did I often find myself lose track of time just exploring the world, either in the car, on a chocobo or even on foot.
Plus, FFXV had the best fishing mini-game I have seen in any game 'til date and still haven't found anything that rivals it. Which even got its own little spin-off for the VR headset and that was pretty cool.

Honestly its so nice to see someone explain why ffxv is good in some ways, and bad in others. I feel like I had unique perspective going into the game. I'd never been able to play any of the previous games myself, but had watched my brother play them for years. he was super hyped when versus 13 was announced and although he stopped playing them, I always looked forward to being able to play it myself. I enjoyed the differences it had with previous games, although all the points made in this video did ring true with my own personal opinions about it, this game ended up meaning so much to me. while I was disappointed by some aspects, there was a saving grace to it in some areas of the fandom. I ended up making friends with a lot of wonderful people, and considering when I was first able to play (2017, pocket money was tight) I was in a really bad place, this game and the friend's I made through it literally saved my life. I was recently able to start playing it again (old computer died in 2018) and it's every bit one of my fave games. But with the movie and anime combined this is one of the best and most fun pieces of Final Fantasy. And it's weird because Final Fantasy is so amazing for the story and world it draws you in. But it's a bit different here. It really feels like a fieldtrip with your bros, and it delivers that in a fantastic way. The gameplay is fun, it's simple but makes you feel like a total badass. Admittedly, I walked into it a little weary - I just finished my first playthrough of the game after pouring 80 hours on it, doing every little thing I could and crying through most of the last main story chapter and the final credits - but the video is very reasonable and full of valid criticisms that I also made on my own. Still, I loved the game, and couldn't understand why so many people I know were into the FF series as a whole didn't like it, until this video made me realize... I never liked traditional FF games, so the lack of those traditional elements I didn't like was a plus, while to the old time fans, it was a massive setback. It all makes sense. Only ended up spending around twenty dollars on the game total which was a great price imo. I’m honestly super happy with it, I had heard a lot of complaints about it and yeah it has it’s flaws but I genuinely adore the storyline and character interactions far more than the other Final Fantasy games I’ve tried to play, I’m going to be giving the Final Fantasy 7 remake game a chance soon and hope I enjoy it just as much if not more so but I doubt I will. Noctis and the boys just have such a special place in my heart it really felt like they had a whole personality to the point it stuck with me. Some games really just feel like the characters are lacking in personality or the dialogue just isn’t something natural, idk how to really explain it but this game when it comes to character interaction and storytelling is just amazing to me. I absolutely adored playing Prompto’s episode as well it was just amazing! There are so many aspects of this game that I love that I can personally easily overlook the flaws but I can also understand why it may not be some people’s favorites. Actually when it comes to combat you have different moves and combos depending on where you lean the joystick and double tapping the attack button mid combo, and it does involve more depth since it can help with dodging, positioning or even quicken a finisher. It sucks the game doesn't teach you that since the combat really opens up when you figure it out.
I adore this game dispite the flaws, its just too charming and fun. But it won't lie I hate how they handled the DLCs. It should've been in the base game as they are great and are important to the plot. But this is a really underrated installment, the story is fantastic when knowing the full thing (which sucks since most people may miss it due to how it's presented so I understand if people found it lacking), and the music is godly.

There actually are combos when you use the greatswords, if you press the attack button at the right time, you get attacks that do extra damage. Also, there's a charge attack if you do the right input. Add in jump attacks, warp strikes, switching weapons and air attacks, the combat system is actually pretty cool

This was my first FF game. My first playthrough was pretty rough, but I decided to give it another run a few days and, thanks to a better understanding of the combat mechanics, I’m already having a much better time

It pains me to hear so many people saying this is the first game they've played in the series. This is one of the worst in the series I've played. For reference I've played 1-10, 12, 13, 15, Tactics, Tactics Advance, and Chrystal Chronicles.

it always blows my mind how little the pause mode for combat gets talked about, imo it adds a lot of depth to the combat and actually allows you to do strategic planning instead of just button mashing. like I don't think I've seen it talked about in a single review of the game I've read or watched. The FF7 remake combat is still better but still.

What’s the point of adding the feature if it was never needed it the first place? No reason to really talk about it.

@@NotCharAznable it's how the developers intended to have the combat played though?

@@theactionbasterd They intended an ARPG to be played stop and go? Then it was a bad feature, poorly implemented, and poorly designed.

@@theactionbasterd No, it was not intended. It got put in further in development upon community request. The game was never intended to be played with pause mode. That aside, dying is literally impossible in the game so there was never a need to use it. I played with it because it was the most fun I could have with the game but removing it would have changed nothing about the game.

I think the game is really good I think people thought it was bad because they waited for it for 10 years and it wasn’t what they expected it to be

Nope. I played it in it's entirety recently. It's just a mediocre game. They used pre-built assets. A ton of side quests which all amount to fetch quests. The main story isn't very interesting. They didn't do themselves any favors by splitting the store into other games/movies. They really phoned this one in.

@@justincider8892 thats.....the point. It is a mediocre game for many hence why the 10-year wait equaled to a massive dissapointment for many. No one is saying the game is perfect but many are saying after waiting 10 years for this, it wasnt worth it.

Again, brilliant video. I am in awe of your insight and professionalism.
That said, I’m a Final Fantasy fanboy, and while XV isn’t my #1, I still enjoy it.

I was one of the fans who eagerly awaited Versus XIII. I would check discussion threads for leaks, I would watch theories on YT, I had every trailer downloaded in HD so I could watch them frame by frame, then played XV day 1. I was heartbroken by this game.
But then I played in last year again (2021). I purchased the royal edition and played the game through, every bit of it. And I can honestly say it was my expectations and excitement for the game that held the majority of my heartbreak. Looking at XV through a fresh light again, I ended up loving the game. It has many many flaws... but it's a great game. I just won't get over that the last DLCs got cancelled. FFXV is truly the definition of bittersweet in every way.
    Great video, thank you.
