How to make watercolour bookmarks - line and wash flowers

- I said in last week's film that making watercolour bookmarks can be quite addictive! Well loads of people must share that addiction as over 25,000 people watched it in a week. How crazy is that?
Why are they so good? They're quick to do, so perfect if you are short of time. They are excellent for experimenting with new techniques or trying out new colours in a more imaginative way than simply swatching. They make great presents/gifts. If something works on a bookmark it can be scaled up into a painting. You can use them as a gentle introduction to mixed media. It's a super way of practicing your line and wash mark making. And who doesn't like a tassel?
In this film we will do a loose watercolour background, then add some flowers and leaves. I will show you a simple and effective flower and also a few more complicated ones. I then add a little opaque acrylic, but you could use gouache or other pens. Then it's time to seal them with wax to make sure they don't mark the book and of course, add the tassel.
Tassels can be found here (affiliate link) amzn.to/3KFXI5M
These are links to the pens I am using and Ohuhu have just offered 10% off if you use the code LizChader10 ( until 14 July 2024)
The Ohuhu watercolor markers: bit.ly/3wxFr7w
The arylic pens: bit.ly/4bhOtEP
The fineliners: bit.ly/3UV0YAh
The ideal size is 5.5x20cm which is 2.2 x 7.9 ins
They should be sealed before use to prevent any paint getting on your book should you spill some water. I like to wax them using Dorland's wax, but you could use any clear wax medium or even wax designed to go over chalk paint. You can also use an acrylic varnish.
You can find the Ohuhu acrylic markers here: www.eu.ohuhu.com - they are great and here is a full review I did after this film: • How good are these Ohu... .

Oh Lordy, I can feel another obsession coming on…..❤
Yup. Add some stamps or stencils to the back and my family will never see me again. 😆
I know I have so many now. I’ve sold a few and the rest are going to my lovely book group!
my stencil habit was getting out of hand….
Don’t you just hate it when that happens? It always seems to signal another Amazon haul.
@@LizChadertonArt I feel your pain, I have an oversized binder crammed full of stencils 😌
Very skilled but unpretentious.. charming delivery and great tips. Love it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gorgeous!!! So simple, but so effective. Beautiful linework Liz 🇦🇺🦘
Thanks so much! 😊
little works of art, I love them. Thanks
they are very relaxing to do
At the moment I just paint my 'excess' paint on to the facing page of my sketchbook but I can see this is a much better idea.
it’s a fun way of using it up
So much fun! Love it! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am SO enjoying this series! (Is two considered a series?) Anyway I'd love to see more-maybe birds?
Until my wax comes in, I thought these would make a great spread in an art journal. Just divide the page up with masking tape. I was thinking maybe choose 2 or 3 colors to have them all coordinate, just all done with a bit different mix of colors and line work. Maybe a set of the seasons, and now I foresee some sets of flowers. I'm always looking for simple things to do in my journal, and I think this idea is perfect! Thanks so much for sharing!
a mini series….. might do another 😊 That’s a great idea in your journal
Gorgeous colors. I may have to add some Rosa Gallery to my stash. They're amazing 😊 Great little art projects! The black 🖤 line on the reds ♥ is a great combo. Priceless tip on the wax sealers. I have been considering sealing my watercolor postcards. Now I know exactly what I need. Blessings from across the pond 🌎 🙏🏽
I’m enjoying the Rosa and they are very affordable. I’ve filmed a review which I just need to edit!
Thank you! This is brilliant for me as a beginner!! 😀😀
yes!
Oh my goodness, you’re so lovely to learn from, thank you!
thank you so much!
You are adorable and I love the way you explain everything. I’ve never watercolor painted before and after watching some of your vids I am now inspired! Thank you!
ooh! if one person is inspired to try watercolours, I’ve done my job!
Love these Liz perfect for a beginner like myself! 😁
Glad you like them!
Very nice! Love your line work.
Thank you very much!
Wow Thanks for your demonstration, especially wax protection method!
You are so welcome!
Absolutely BRILLIANT! Thank You Liz❤❤❤
You are so welcome!
Lovely floral bookmarks. Thank you Liz 😊
Glad you like them!
Lovely ideas! Thank you.🥰
You are so welcome!
My experience: Using Dorland's Wax I also used my fingers. It is really a challenge to remove the wax from your hands. Caution: Use rubber gloves and apply with a rolled-up paper towel or small brush dedicated to the wax. A very thin coat works best. (Soap does NOT remove this from your hands.) Great product! Great results!
definitely need soap to get it off your hands!
Lovely!
hope you give them a go….
Thanks!
thank you so much!
Newbie here. These are wonderful and I can't wait to try. I intended to make bookmarks as I learn wc so I bought some of those sleeves. I need to use them, and I don't like the idea of waxing as I have issues with movement of my arms/hands. What is your objection to the sleeves, please and thanks for sharing these
Sleeves sound like a good idea for you. it’s just a personal thing that I don’t like the way they look…
One word......BRILLIANT 😊 can I say another?.... BEAUTIFUL 😀
Thank you so much!
Hi aunty liz it’s me Alexander
hello Alexander! Do you like painting?
Ye
Love my nephews,too.❤Nice comment
These are stunning. Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Hullo Liz, I do enjoy watching your videos and seeing your bookmark videos are especially fun! I love using Dorlands wax for postcards! I am hesitant about using it on my bookmark as I have had one melt onto a book page and so it rather ruined my book. I am happy to report that it was not a first edition or like that! Yes I read my books they are not just for collecting! So I have decided that I am only going to use silk bookmarks with my more expensive books! I live at the top of the Sacramento valley and we get high temperatures in the 100 & teens in the summer! That’s how my bookmark melted. So now I use a UV spray to protect them for use in my general book collections. You know Harry Potter & Percy Jackson, etc.
gosh, I have never had Dorlands melt, even leaving painting in a hot car. Yes a uv spray or a coat of mat gel medium is another alternative. Yikes, that’s hot!
@@LizChadertonArt yes, it did not help that the car was shut up and was in the sun too. I simply did not think about the book in the back seat and sitting in sunlight too! I have nobody to blame but me.
@@mjpete27 ….and that’s why we don’t leave kids or dogs in the car. Wow, it must have been hot!
I live in the US deep South. THANKS for your insightful comment. The heat is not as intense as yours but i appreciate your warning. I'll heed it. Happy creating ❤
What key words did you use on Pixabay? I haven’t been able to find the ones you showed in the tutorial.
flowers or leaves, then narrowed to illustrations and I might have narrowed to black and white too. I’ve already put them on the community tab of this channel, so they are there for you 😊
Silly question… Does the Paul Rubens sparkly paper lose its sparkle after you add the wax at the end BTW, beautiful bookmarks!
not silly at all! The sparkle isn’t visible through the paint, but you can see it on the back through the wax
After watching your first video on bookmarks I made a several . It is addicting! But when I put on the cold wax it remains sticky . Even after buffing. Any tips about that?
I’m sorry, but I have never experienced that. I would only expect wax based media like some pencils or oil pastels to move. you could use an acrylic spray varnish, followed by wax but you shouldn’t have to
Que es esa crema que les pones al terminar? No se tu idioma y no entiendo lo que es ,no he visto nunca en otros trabajos ,que le pongan esa crema . Madrid . España .❤
Dorland's Wax medium... if you want it to be archival. If you look for products with like ingredients where you are, I'm sure it would work too. Hope this helps❤
It is a cold wax medium which contains beeswax and Damar resin. You might be able to substitute a clear furniture wax, as long as it won’t go yellow or crack
Another wonderful inspiration to make bookmarks! Thanks!
@@LizChadertonArtI make bookmarks and used Dorlands wax in the beginning, but I found some people don't like the feel of it. And I certainly didn't like the strain on my arm lol. So I looked for an alternative and discovered Crafter's Companion (that's an Aladdin's Cave all by itself!), and their spray varnishes - I chose the clear pearlescent/light glitter, and really like the subtle 'sparkle' it gives to the bookmarks. The only downside for me, is having to make sure I cover everything with a sheet, before I begin. And having to leave them to dry before turning them over, to spray the other side. Oh and it's the only time I ever don a mask! I love your bookmarks, and I think I'm going to be investing in the round corner punch.
@@melaniebaynes2730 ooh, that sounds an interesting alternative! I will take a look
Hello, I have used the wax but it takes off some of the watercolour when it is applied? Have you any suggestions please. Thanks
I have never experienced that. watercolour should not be soluble in wax. was it Dorlands?
@@LizChadertonArt No it as the Annie Sloan one.
@@LizChadertonArt It was Annie Sloan wax
@@rowenaoverton4568 The only thing I would expect to smear might be pencil (some are wax based) or oil pastels. So I do not know why. You could spray with acrlic varnish to seal then wax, but you shouldn’t need to.
@@LizChadertonArt the paint was by A Gallo with lots of green. When I used Daniel smith paints they didn’t come off.
Must be something in their paints perhaps. Thanks for your help.
