How to make watercolour and collage bookmarks - even if you can't paint!

  • You can't say I didn't warn you! Making watercolour bookmarks is totally addictive! I seem to have hundreds now - have started gifting them!
    Not only are they quick to do, they are perfect for experimenting with new techniques or trying out new colours in a more imaginative way than simply swatching. They make great presents/gifts. So I thought we could practice a few mixed media techniques on these using a watercolour base, line work with fineliners, highlights with acrylic pens and then collage. I used an old dictionary and map and also a napkin to produce the flowers in the foreground. These are perfect if you don't think you can paint and perfect if you know you can - win, win!
    Tassels can be bought here (affiliate link): amzn.to/3KFXI5M So many to choose from!
    These are links to the pens I am using and Ohuhu have just offered 10% off if you use the code LizChader10 ( until 14 July 2024)
    The Ohuhu watercolor markers: bit.ly/3wxFr7w
    The arylic pens: bit.ly/4bhOtEP
    The fineliners: bit.ly/3UV0YAh
    I cut my own bookmarks or you can get a little pad of bookmark paper from Hahnemuhle. Use whatever supplies you have to hand. A little watercolour and a ballpoint pen will work! This is a link to the pad:artsupplies.hooluh.co.uk/hahn...
    They should be sealed before use to prevent any paint getting on your book should you spill some water. I like to wax them using Dorland's wax, but you could use any clear wax medium or even wax designed to go over chalk paint. You can also use an acrylic varnish.
    Every like and comment tells RUclips to show this to more people, so please jump in and share with your creative friends. If you really, really like this content and want to support me you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at: ko-fi.com/lizchadertonartist
    Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?
    If you want to have more in depth courses please head over to www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk. I also run a friendly Facebook group: / watercolourstudiowithl... .

    I love, love these videos on bookmarks! I've bought the corner cutter, and some Dorland's wax. My first ones I did with watercolor, but then I tried Brusho. Have you used that? It's a powder you sprinkle on, then spritz with water, and you get the most incredible bursts of color. I think I own 30 different colors of Brusho. Makes fantastic bookmarks! Now I want to try the collage. Oh, and I have a lot of washi tape... Your first video on bookmarks was how I found you.

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Месяц назад +2

      I enjoy Brusho but it gets EVERYWHERE! I also find it’s quite hard to seal, so do check it won’t stain your book. But such gorgeous effects

      No, it seems okay, though it could if you went back and forth a lot. To be honest it is only stripes of colour so if they smeared a bit, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Just be gentle

    Hi Liz! Well I took a try today for the first time doing these! I know it will be fun as soon as I become accustomed to the technique. I wanted to aks about glueing the napkin down. I put just a little spot of glue where I wanted it to adhere and then used the hard part of the brush to keep in place, but I noticed that if I did not keep quite a bit of glue on the brush it could tend to not adhere and would stick to the brush, and then of course, the natural reaction is to panic and go stick my finger on it, well, i think you know what I'm getting at! LOL a sticky shredded napkin. So....my question is do you use a special brush for the glue? Do you wet the brush first before using the glue? I am using the PVA glue. Thank you again for any insight. Terri

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Месяц назад +1

      I am pretty generous with the glue, as it dries clear, so I spread a bit beyond the area I want to stick so the edges go down. I place the napkin and do not move it. One opportunity to avoid soggy mess! I then use a soft gluey brush and gently go over it to make sure it’s down. I don’t use a special brush, but go for a soft rather than hard one. tbh I haven’t ever had a prob unless I try to move the napkin when wet.

    • @LizChadertonArt

    Hi Liz, thank you for re-igniting my desire to do some painting. Could I ask I haven't used the wax before...if you scale this up to say a 8x10 or bigger for framing would you still use the wax if you were going to frame under glass? (I hope this makes sense!)

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Месяц назад

      if it’s under glass no need to wax. The wax is an environmental protection instead of the glass. This gives you an idea for larger pieces: ruclips.net/video/5viz8wXzVhc/видео.html
