So this was just a little review for Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a game that's near and dear to my gamer's heart. It's not extremely serious I thought it'd be fun to talk a little Zelda, and throw around what I think about a classic like this.

I always loved the Legend of Zelda series. I...am...old, lol. I remember playing the original game. The gold cartridge was so cool, and the game didn't disappoint. It rose above expectations. The best game on the NES. It took me YEARS to beat it. When I finally got that silver arrow and hit Ganon, it was so satisfying. I also loved Zelda 2. I really thought it improved on the original. The downward stab, the Iron Knuckle...on horseback, the maze-like Temples, the Magic meter, Shadow Link. It was so...awesome. Then Ocarina of Time came out and it just blew everything else away. I love this video. You nailed it. This game is just so much awesome crammed into a game that can barely contain it on a system that can barely do it justice and it still somehow comes out shining, and you conveyed all that.

I can never look at OoT in an objective light to be honest. I remember getting this game as a suicidal teenager in a really shitty spot and it helped me a lot. It was a healing hand on my shoulder when I definately needed it at that time and its one of those pieces of art that defined me as a person.
    Either way, I've been in those ALTTP vs OOT arguments and my position stands as;
people don't love ALTTP, they love playing it. It might sound like splitting hairs but its important. People love OoT. They love the world, the story, the characters, the little nuances you can find in the world. I can barely find fanart on Sahashrahla or Agahnim but I can find tons of fanart on the cucco lady.

What I find interesting about that ALTTP statement is that ALBW is kinda opposite; I absolutely love the game to death, playing it can be annoying until you can buy your items rather than rent, but it’s such a great game with one of the best villains in Zelda; as for the cucco lady, her model was used for Anju in Majora’s Mask, so of course she’d be massively popular, at least I think so

I feel like most people don't understand statements like that, most people are like "uhhhhh how did a GAME save your life?" Sometimes we forget what joy is but then some games like OoT or Mario 64 or Sonic 2 remind us how to smile, it brings back that blissful peace we used to have when we were little

The fight against Ganondorf and Ganon is almost biblical.
Every game seems to have its own distinct hue and tone that makes you recognize it.
Instead, OoT's trademark is that it features all of them. In contrast with most games out there, you can't fully know OoT unless you complete the quest to the end.
You start as a 10 year old in a bright green forest with cute little music, basically pass through every color of the rainbow thematically and aesthetically and in the end, you have become the embodiment of the archetypal hero, fighting Satan on a plateau of dust and rubble, surrounded by ominous moutains and a ring of fire, with only flashes of lightning helping you make out the beast that you have to take down.
If you first played the game young, that same growth could be reflected through you as the player, who struggled to make out the controls at first and ended up mastering all the mecanics of the game in the end. It also makes the ending of going back to the past all the more bittersweet.
All of this contribute to making Majora's Mask a great sequel that only those who played the first game can understand.
Tl;dr: the game was setup to be a memorable experience in every way possible.

There’s a video done by this channel Good Blood that really goes in depth into the themes of the game. It’s called Ocarina A Master Class In Subtext. • @ltmuffler3482

It was the first game that gave me a true sense of melancholy at the end. It was fascinating going through all this effort, all the build up, all the exploration and growth as you came to love this world and grow in it, as Link gave everything, including his childish innocence, to struggle his way up to the big climax against a rightfully intimidating enemy who managed to be one step ahead of you the whole way. And then at the very end, it capped that subtle feeling of sadness, loneliness, fatigue, and estrangement by forcing you to watch Zelda forcibly return you to the past where none of your success or achievements would be remembered. The most real video game parallel to a soldier coming home to a country that fundamentally fails to understand the sacrifices he made to preserve their peaceful ways of life. It crushed the little child me, it was the first time I cried at the end of a story where we had won. Though I didn't realize it, that moroseness was always there, and it consumed me as I subconsciously understood how sad it was for Link to have no one at the end, not even Navi. The world needed him, but he had no one he could lean on.

I played Qbert and pitfall on the atari, I remember playing the sega with terminator, Ghostbusters and sonic, and the SNES (it had Mario all stars and star fox). I had played Wolfenstein at that point, and Mortal Kombat 2. Goldeneye and Mario 64. But OOT made me fell in love with gaming. The scale, the score, the characters and stories, the sense of exploration - it all just came together and it was all just too good. So good that I knew games weren't just there for fun. I wish I could replay it for the first time just like that favorite movie we all have. The sense of adventure that came with playing one of the first 3d games ever was also pivotal, as the sense of discovery and exploration was unmatched at the time. I avoided all trailers and media for BOTW when it was in development, and as such I was able to play it completely blind and I was able to recapture that feeling of wonder

I was convinced the log you fly through in the menu background scenes was the way to the final boss). It was an accomplishment of storytelling and gameplay well beyond the standards of the time and it captured my unlimited little mind back then.

I'm so glad that this game in particular was my first video game ever. There's such a unique interaction with nostalgia here, starting off playing as a child reminiscing my own childhood playing the game, and then pulling the Master Sword and reflecting on how I too, have grown up. And all of Sheiks quotes drive that feeling home even harder

Would've been fun to note the reason why Z targeting 'works' even though it narrows your focus down to one enemy and not your surroundings. Is because in the code whomever your z targetting will be the only one to attack you (outside levers) while everything else makes distance.

I didn't play Ocarina as a kid so I don't have any nostalgia associated with it. I don't like playing it very much. What I do like is the music. Lots of songs came out this game that are present in pretty much all future installments in some variation. And I greatly appreciate the game pioneered 3d games. Obviously it's not the sole contributor for that but it's up there. I'm 100% positive I would have loved it as a kid but as an adult it's sort of meh. It's a tremendous first attempt at a 3d Zelda though. I won't take that from it.

The overall high fantasy tone of this game, the amazing original score and songs, the perfect balance of child’s game and dark mature tones, all of these things make it perfect and unfortunately all of these things are actually missing from BotW which is why I still view OoT as a better overall experience.

I don't even need to watch this video to answer the question why nobody shuts up about this game. The answer:
    1. Its arguably the greatest video game ever made.
    2. Its replay value is off the hook.
    3. The level and game design is not only classic but basically flawless from almost every standpoint.
    4. This IS the real Zelda story if no other Zelda game was made.
    5. It's an experience that will live on forever.
    6. Its the Super Mario Bros 3 of the NES. Ex: NES games look terrible now people forget Super Mario Bros 3 is still an 8-bit game that holds up in 2021. Wow. Super Mario 64 graphics suck now even though a great game and OOT still on same engine and still holds up with same poor graphics. Look at the sky in the open field on the N64 game. Its realistic and shockingly real looking. 😳
    7. Even playing OOT a 100th time I experience something new that I didnt before.
    8. The lock on Z tagetting was done so well that countless other videogames have copied it the last 20 years.
    9. The dungeon design is top notch and basically perfect.
    10. The feel of the game has a rare classic uniqueness not many other games before it or after have.

I didn't get to play this game until it came out on the 3DS and only years later after BOTW was already released. Because it was great, unbelievably fun to play, came out during a time period where video games, specifically 3D video games, didnt have that strong of a foothold on the market yet, so it stood out remarkably. It was the first 3D "pseudo open world exploration" game. The story was fresh, exciting and had depth. The creatures of hyrule were intensely grotesque and well designed.

OOT was the one who set the classic 3d formula, and it did it so masterfully that every game up until Skyward Sword only added or improved the formula slightly. OOT is the perfect example of doing something perfectly the first time you do it.
BotW in the other hand is the only game since that has changed the formula and it's clear that there still lots that need to be improved, despite how inovative and refreshing the new formula was.

This game is a masterpiece in so many ways and it is definitely my favorite game of all time. It also definitely has some of the best music and sound elements of within a Zelda series of course as well. The artwork based on the game is truly beautiful, and despite what most might say, I love game’s more simplistic art style. It’s a pretty ambitious and amazing first rendering of Zelda within a 3D world in my opinion as well. Most games these days seem to focus too much on how the game looks and other gimmicks, and seem to miss the point of truly being a great game and experience. Even one of my earliest memories are of me watching my mom playing this game as Link riding around on Epona 💕🐎

I didn’t have an N64 at my place but my cousin did, every time I went over there I’d play their collectors edition of Zelda which had Oot among other Zeldas. It took me years to beat the game simply because I was too young to solve all the challenges the game was throwing at me, but when I finally did beat it after years of deleted saves (cause remember, not my console) it was such a good feeling. It really did feel like a went on a journey.

For me the reason I love this game is because of its lack of "Fluff." You know what I mean, like how Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword had an entire opening of tutorials, establishing character relationships, and dialogue before you get to your first dungeon. Ocarina of Time is very quick to give you your first dungeon, some lore/story, and then let you be on your way. Granted it lacks any real depth as all the story is surface level but it gets the job done. I think Majora's Mask reaches a good balance of non intrusive tutorials, story depth, and solid gameplay but that game is its own beast.

The absolutely only thing about this game that makes it impossible for me to play it is the framerate. I live in a country with PAL systems so the game runs at an average of 16fps which is honestly abysmal. It's such a shame because I personally adore the "outdated" graphics and I don't mind the controls all too much. Thankfully I've had the fortune of playing it on 3DS, a remaster of which many view to be straight up superior, but there's something about those old shitty N64 graphics that truly captivate me.
