A lot of good information for many operators that have never used GPS. It's another tool in your toolbox and it takes a lot of time to utilize all of it's capabilities.

Yeah they don't realize that parts of a job have different off sets for different things. There is a lot to a GPS dozer not just get in and go. It is a great tool though. Makes a really good operator even better if he takes the time to learn everything about it. And like you say there are a lot of tricks that can be used. Haven't used much topcon, but have used Trimble gcs 900. Anyway good video is this part of your algorithm series.
as a dozer opperator on a now 5 year old cat D6 explained it. The GPS for that dozer could do the up and down, And move each corner upp or down,,, but it could not tilt the blade left or right to make material flow to the sides. But it only worked properly at slow speeds. But another dozer, this time Liebherr with different type of GPS only could do the up and down even tho it was more ''Advanced'' as explained by the dealer.
Love this !! Thank you thank you ! GPS dozer is for your fine finish grade only! You have to cut out and get pretty close because the blade won’t cut much out ! Hit a rock and your blade is skipping, you have to be working at all times when you auto your gps dozer lol !! Silly boys dozers are for girls now 😉🥰
I’d love to learn one of these systems for bigger projects, because running an 8 with a guy walking with a laser setup and a stick in his hand can get frustrating. I can do a decent job just doing it off of my eye, but like you said you still have clean up and compaction to take into consideration. Anyway, I feel like if anyone believes these misnomers that you brought up in the video they are probably irrelevant people to be concerned with and if you put them in a seat of a machine that’s quickly find out that we have job security for a VERY long time as operators. As a side note I love the way Canadians say “PROcess” and “PROject” haha cheers
Where did you get that sweatshirt? I like the gps in my 6 to stake the job. I keep lath in the cab and stake for everyone else who doesn't have a gps system. Then fisnish it off when they get it close. You can get a more done when everyone knows gr.
I’ve been running machine control for 4 years . Did it the other way 21 years . I don’t use auto until I have it close using my cross section view . Trimble is by far my favorite. Topcon second . Last but not least Leica . Also offsets . You have sub grade , finish grade , rock grade finish floor all that can be changed . You have to know your thickness of concrete , pavement or slope . Topsoil had to be accounted for . Say .33 for ample topsoil spread . Without an excavator or pan in front of you moving the bulk the dozier is useless . I’ve heard a trained monkey can run GPS dozier . Ha . No way . I’ve got so many jobs under my belt that I’ve seen it all . GPS is a tool like a hammer or saw . Trouble shooting is also a big deal . I also run my own localization. I have the rover to go with my dozier . So I can check and change blade wear and go behind myself or lay out all kinds of things . Fire plugs , water valves , storm boxes . Etc . I’m considered very valuable to my company. Interestingly enough I lied to get in my first gps dozier . And I was lost ! Lol but I learned fast and later went to John Deere training days at the proving grounds and REALLY got good .
Been running equipment for a while, from coast to coast. The BS about doing things by 'eye' cracks me up. I've done plenty of finish work by eye. I'll take my GPS system and go up against anyone doing it that way. There's just no comparison. I've saved weeks of work on projects with this stuff. You need to understand it, but once you do its crazy productive.

Had a guy in a gps excavator yesterday who was in the wrong design, he was on the wrong side of his bucket while cutting a chimney drain in, needless to say we had to refill with clay compact and re-cut the trench
I have no problem with GPS in machine's, in fact I think it saves a lot of cost when grading because you don't need a bunch of surveyors on site all the time. The only thing that is worrying me is that the GPS is getting better and before you know it you won't need any operators for dozers, diggers, graders or no more dump truck drivers, maybe I'm just being paranoid, has anyone else have these thoughts?
We getting all this gps and like you said there’s a lot of scenarios first of all when I get to a job site full of trash clean up all the trash then we get a ballpark of what’s going on hog it all out and then hit that GPS for the final final grade!! But lotta time a handful of the guys you know how to run the GPS figure it all out I got the whole place Done by common sense in an eyeball then we detail it up with the GPS in about five guys at a 200 not a run it so far but we are learning
If you know how to move dirt you can run a dozer on gps. I learned with older guys that say run it with your ass. So ass up against the seat. The gps help me feel what being level dead level truly is. My fine grade is better and faster. I have the eagle eye with a gps computer in my head now. Lol
So you took 20 minutes to try to justify your place in the seat? Guessing someone in the canteen pissed you off and said the gps does it all for you. Being honest, as an operator myself, you’re making it seem much harder than it actually is, the reality is that the auto on the GPS *DOES* do most of the work for you, any idiot knows you can’t push out 500mm cuts. Also...the new intelligent komatsu dozers, CAN adjust for a full blade, they’ll cut gradually so you don’t stop, they’ll lift the blade when it senses its full (resistance). It also has fill/spread function. Don’t be threatened by gps mate, it’s a tool FOR the operator, not to replace the operator. ;-)
I have never ran a GPS Dozer but I can cut grade with my eye I was taught by an old-timer who had 40 years experience running dirt equipment and I worked under him for 10 years I would refer to myself as a finish Dozer hand to say the least
GPS is a great tool ( especially with someone operating that knows how to move dirt). It is also killing a very usefully skill. Being able to grade without GPS is a hard thing to do. It has been done for years. There is more dependency on the electronics vs the skill.
The dozer knows what the grade is but doesn't know there's 6' of material in front of it. Obviously the dozer can't push that much material. Auto grade only works within the physical capabilities of the machine.
Idk man the dozer I was in with gps controlled all blade movements just had to make it go forward or reverse an drive it around to collect grade data at diff gps points put the program in an could of never been in a dozer b4 an have it done like a pro … guess u forgot to say not all gps systems r the same
For the sake of job security, it's good that there's no true "auto button". If that were the case, the company would waste ZERO time in yanking operators out the equipment...for good. I've never heard of a fully autonomous dozer, hoe or crane. Good vid.
cranes are the same thing computers are the confusing part. to learn but if you know how to operate cranes etc some people try to make a big deal of it so get in the machine turn it on turn the acl on and it is so simple if you have problems ask a kid walking buy how to work the computer ...computers absolutely fuck operators when they aren.t working
John Savoy There is certainly a push for all things autonomous. Employers are thinking they're saving money by replacing workers with computers. Bad part is that it is a worker who gets a paycheck and then circulates that paycheck into the economy that keeps the economic system afloat. Robots don't buy homes, clothes, new vehicles and grocery shop. There needs to be a rethink on replacing humans with autonomous technology

The people think it’s easy to just push dirt and getting something level , but basically the operator is inside the cab and is in a very bad angle to estimate what he is going. Tracking layers a few cm all the way, I feel it’s very hard to see what you are doing. The only way I’ve found that works for me at grading is using an excavator with a blade large bucket, I see what I am doing , and if I have a laser to tell me what is the level, it works just fine.
Pushy Six you should check out the cut fill mapping feature in TRIMBLE Earthworks that starts by colouring up the cut fill areas in plan, cross section and profile views by comparing a scan surface and the design surface and then constantly updates as you make passes with the machine.
GPS is a a tool. Just like any tool it’s only as good as the operator and it can’t make you an operator. Equipment will become autonomous. It a ways off but it will. That’s not to say no one will be on site, but labor is getting to costly.
i had to do it all by using eye then having a string line on the batters first for trimming then for pushing topsoil on, also trimming up after a excavator we use to use laborers with boards to bone in the heights not its all gps, while it's good it now takes the skill and art out of operating machines, hence why i am thinking of leaving the trade
"The art of experience" being lost to electronic gadgetry is something that we in the music business see a lot of; I can draw a straight line across the table from "Dozers with GPS" to "Casinos with electronic drums". A lot of the older drummers who worked in the casino bands, when they first experienced the electronic kits were not impressed with all the fancy stuff they could do and were resistant to learning even the basics of "how to run them". Those were the guys who you'd see less and less of at "shift change" (casinos typically have multiple bands play on the same stage, hence the same set of drums...drums bulldozers... same/same...kinda/sorta...). They were working less because of being adverse towards adjusting with technology. Personally I can't stand E-drums and I'm with you on the "eyeball it" thing. A good operator has to know the basics and then some. And experience is something one cannot buy, you gotta earn it from the ground up.
A lot of guys hate on gps because they aren’t good enough to run it. It’s just close minded. I don’t run gps because I work for my parents small company but I do use a laser receiver pretty often and I love it. I agree you should be able to do both auto and manual but anyone that knows anything about gps can see that it’s the better way to go. It’s funny because most farmers see the benefits but the dirt guys see it as a strike on their masculinity to use gps.

A reasonable person can see that companies wouldn’t be spending thousands of dollars on gps equipment if it were so inferior to manual methods like pretentious old timers would lead you to believe.

GPS is not dependable it is accurate within a tenth, but I can cut within a hundredth manually, having ran both, gps is for the ones who are not good enough, a good grade man could name his pay,within reason, I know, I did,.Gps changes it grade for no reason other than a poor satellite reception, but construction in general has declined in workmanship, men were good at their jobs once, now it's good enough for a poorly done job
If you cut within a hundredth on a dozer it's by accident. If a dozer cut is verified within a hundredth by a survey it's by accident. Dozer cuts are designed to the hundredth. The same GPS that controls the machine controls the rod man's topo shots.

More like half a tenth, further, even if the grade man wasn't using GPS back when you were "grading within a hundredth" he was certainly using a transit and grade rod, and if that man holding the grade rod isn't literally perfect, your grade will be off by more than a hundredth. Sorry, but grading to 1/8th of an inch across and entire site never happened, and isn't going to. 3 hundredths, sure, but not 1.

So you have to rough grade. It doing the finish grade it doing your job for you.

how did we run a dozer without A/C and no GPS for 40 years and got the job done faster and better than all the electronic crap

Those were the guys who you'd see less and less of at "shift change" (casinos typically have multiple bands play on the same stage, hence the same set of drums...drums bulldozers... same/same...kinda/sorta...). They were working less because of being adverse towards adjusting with technology.
Personally I can't stand E-drums and I'm with you on the "eyeball it" thing. A good operator has to know the basics and then some. And experience is something one cannot buy, you gotta earn it from the ground up.
I find the barriers to working with any kind of plant is common sense and the lack of use your head

A lot of guys hate on gps because they aren’t good enough to run it. It’s just close minded. I don’t run gps because I work for my parents small company but I do use a laser receiver pretty often and I love it. I agree you should be able to do both auto and manual but anyone that knows anything about gps can see that it’s the better way to go. It’s funny because most farmers see the benefits but the dirt guys see it as a strike on their masculinity to use gps.

Dozerboy D8 I don’t need to use gps to see the benefits or to know how it works. If you keep an open mind and want to learn you’d be amazed at how simple such big scary things can be. A reasonable person can see that companies wouldn’t be spending thousands of dollars on gps equipment if it were so inferior to manual methods like pretentious old timers would lead you to believe.
Strangefruit Son it's odd to me that you would say keep an open mind, but you know next to nothing about GPS or the issues with gps. I how ever ran my first gps machines over 10 years ago and have trained several hands on how to use it since. Now who's mind needs opening to the real world?

I can’t help you with your insecurities but I can tell you that they are there and you might want to seek professional help with them because what you’re doing here is only going to be temporary relief.
Take that junk out of the cat and find an real operator. Stakes.....learn stakes then learn how to operate the GPS properly. And only then yes the machine will control the blade for you....

very old dozer, with the new systems u can go on auto and it will fill up the blade will detect slip and carry the material for you.... so you literaly just need to drive back and fort.... and care to get some slots ... a new dozer can be operated by a total fool

GPS is not dependable it is accurate within a tenth, but I can cut within a hundredth manually, having ran both, gps is for the ones who are not good enough, a good grade man could name his pay,within reason, I know, I did,.Gps changes it grade for no reason other than a poor satellite reception, but construction in general has declined in workmanship, men were good at their jobs once, now it's good enough for a poorly done job

If you cut within a hundredth on a dozer it's by accident. If a dozer cut is verified within a hundredth by a survey it's by accident. Dozer cuts are designed to the hundredth. The same GPS that controls the machine controls the rod man's topo shots.
Ohh your such a youngster, how the hell you think we did it before GPS and the survey team did not have GPS, think out side the box son, be a journeyman,be a professional, not a joystick jockey pushing a button, and when we blue topped within a hundredth it was no accident we were that good, we took pride in our ability to do so, but the lazy kids now days would have the computer do it because it's too hard, Damn right it's hard, we never let that stop us,, Having been on and used GPS they are only accurate within a tenth up or down ,that is a total of 2 tenths difference,something we never settled for, we were better!!
More like half a tenth, further, even if the grade man wasn't using GPS back when you were "grading within a hundredth" he was certainly using a transit and grade rod, and if that man holding the grade rod isn't literally perfect, your grade will be off by more than a hundredth. Sorry, but grading to 1/8th of an inch across and entire site never happened, and isn't going to. 3 hundredths, sure, but not 1.
