Nice to see someone else who appreciates Topcon GPS. In my opinion it's the best of the systems I have used. And I have had To Deal with the Non Believers first hand myself.. 30yrs of experience with operating equipment. And the First Time our company put the system on my D9 N. I actually got told by a few of the foremen That they didn't want it on their job's!!? And That I wouldn't be able to finish with it?? Wow,?! Some people just don't like technology?!..
I can hear why you like that chrome pipe,I wouldn't mind hearing more of that !. My friend ran construction equipment for about 50 years, he sadly died around 1998 age 68 and never got to see all this modern technology over the last few years. I could hear him say now" if I need a computer to tell me how to dig a hole or push dirt I'm done". I totally get the systems and why , but it must be hard for old school guys like he was to adapt. But for the next generation coming in, it will make it easier and quicker to turn a guy that has the concept of running equipment, into good operators in a shorter time hopefully. The guys that have no clue will still be crap operators what ever they do just like it is now. Thanks for sharing,and take care .

GPS systems rock man! Our surveyor who also does grading on our jobsite uses GPS. When we are onsite and using our skid steer just to do some of the simplest things with he can check grades with his fancy handheld grade tool and tell us what to move. It handles locating foundation corners to footing depths too. After being spoiled during the grading and foundation process I will never go back to the old way. So much faster! The cost for us is still about same on doing it this way but the production time is way better. And the county and city surveyors like it too.
I could watch this work progressing all day. I can remember when Laser Alignment came out with Construction laser equipment for pipe laying, way back in the 1970's. A lot of contractors thought it was a joke back then. Look at the systems today ! 'We've come a long way Baby', since those days.
What do they have now? We still use Topcon pipe lasers on every pipe job I've been on with the company I work for. I'm rather new to laying pipe but I picked it up real fast like I do with most things. Not rocket science, but there are times it gets tricky for damn sure and you've ALWAYS got to be sharp and on the ball whatever your job may be.... that's everyone.... in the trench, on the ground, in the excavator. Anyway, how else besides a laser in the pipe would you properly lay pipe? (I'm talking mostly about precast concrete storm drain pipe from 12" up to 60". The only other way I could think of is using a transit level and shooting every piece of pipe but that would take forever.
+Tyler Hart. We still use lasers to lay pipe, the Rover GPS unit has replaced the transit, not only will it tell you the grade to start your pipe, it will tell you exactly where your structures go and you can use it to get your laser lined up to the next structure.
Enjoyed your video! As a young boy 14 thru high school I operated an old D8 with my uncle's grading business. I know what setting grading stakes is all about. Two people a transit and scale. It was time consuming. Grading was done with 2 D8s , a pan ( or scraper ) and a motor grader. Everything was open cab. Thing's have sure changed.

Dennis, Your excavation equipment is very impressive to me, being all we have that is primarily oriented toward earth moving is an older John Deere backhoe and an older John Deere skid steer. I do have one complaint however, you have that fancy GPS capability and we don't. Actually, I am not complaining, since these two pieces of equipment do come in very handy and help us tremendously on many projects and in routine farm activities as well. It surely would be nice to have some of your machines available at times, if we could justify their cost. Am very impressed with your capabilities and will be interested to follow you along on projects, even if only via RUclips. Great job and video! Shew! Working that side slope would be pucker factor 10 for me! Lol I can tell you that your 100% right about being an experienced operator. We’ve rented a dozer twice for some jobs we had to do on the ranch here and I’ll tell you what, the first half of the rental period is spent just trying to get proficient with the machine and the second half is spent trying to clean up all the damage you did! DLH Farms yeah, I do realize that but I’ve been over in a machine before so I’m pretty weary when it comes to slopes. The dozer we rented actually felt really stable on the creek bank I was digging where I don’t feel as comfortable on a tractor. I just imagine that amount of weight tipping over and it makes my skin curl... lol I hate not knowing it’s tipping point and if I’m anywhere near it. My hind end will always grab that seat! Haha!
I worked for a big outfit in georgia,that they were putting a lot of GPS on their equipment. They put it on the grader,which I ran for awhile that was all auto,all I did was drive,it controlled the blade,that was cool.Then I went into D8R dozer pushing pans.It also had gps,I started out running equipment without gps,then with it,and it does make grading a lot easier.
+Brian 248 noel. Same here I started with no GPS long time ago, it definitely makes life less stressful to have it. We are getting one of our graders outfitted with an indicate only system in the next couple weeks, no automatics at this time to save a little money.
we use a Leica GPS for our Kamatsu dozer, getting ready to start a road job in So. Md. next month will be using this to put road on grade. I've heard the new JD's don't use the antennae any more it all in the positions of the cylinders. Like your channel.

I've been building 3D Machine Control Models for over 15 years now and ran the first MC controller Topcon offered back when I was a contractor. These new systems that can react to track slippage have really opened up some new door! Being able to switch into auto when you've still got 2' of cut w/o picking the machine up off the ground or just knocking down a pile to carry into fill is a HUGE step IMO! If either of you gentlemen need any Machine Control Modeling, Take-offs or As-builts please let me know. I've been running and programming Blades and Dozers my entire career. I take much pride in my work and would be happy to help. A machine is only as good as information you provide it. I took the Trimble GPS training for Excavators in Switzerland. The Trimble comes from England and the training is hard because the instructors speak Swiss German, very hard for an old American Seabee EO to understand.
I remember when these hit the market, and most of us were worried that we'd be out of a job. But on the contrary, the few guys that trained on them, or lucky enough to work for public sector or private contractors that paid for training would have plenty of work. But looking back it didn't really change things that much.
Exactly you still need to be skilled and know what your doing to make these things work. It's an excellent tool for a skilled operator and makes their job faster and easier.

I wish we had gps on our excavator for doing utilities. It sucks doing jobs with stakes getting ran over and having to wait on a surveyor to show back up.
john deere still using chrome stacks my company starting to get more and more deere equipment i usally run a 844k loader but in winter i run a 470g ex for stripping dirt that has a black stack
your right on all things but I don't think that was a 2:1 slope a 2:1 is a 50% slope and even a little 450 or any small dozer wont hardly stick to it without sliding sideways you can rough one in kinda but you basically have to finish it vertically horizontally a 3:1 is about all they want in sand maybe 2.5:1 on a small light sidetrack machine but you got it going on there no doubt nice setups and you have chosen your equipment very wisely I've been doing it 20+ years and I've run alotta different stuff you have all smart picks and to get production out of g.p.s you have to have experience,talent,and grade smarts that's for sure math is a must know!
I know it was a 2:1 slope that's what the plans called for and that's what was programmed in the Gps and that's what I cut it too. Yes it's very steep the 850 will stick to it fair.
Great vid sounds expensive but I bet the pay back is quick if you can keep the equipment going. I was a gradesman in my younger days, and can see this being a very economic tool.
was the 750K you were looking at with the gps on it a new machine? I currently run a 750k with an old school gps system on it but it is only an indicate system. I have to do all the blade control myself. Do you think the automatics is worth the cost? I've always thought automatics were only good for the last pass but I would like to hear your thoughts about it. Thanks Michael
+Michael Autry. Yeah it had the GPS built in from the factory. If you want to get your grades just right, like finishing a road to the exact grade then auto is the only way to go and yes I this it's worth the cost.

You get the CAD file of the job plans from the engineer then you send them to someone who does gps models then they send it to you ready to put in the machine.
I recently started a job a month ago. I have never used a GPS to grade anything. Ive always used grade stakes. Your right it does speed the process up. I am cutting out a parking lot for a church, and my boss pretty much just put me in it and let me go. So I have to continuously ask questions, and he makes me feel like Im a bad operator. Ive been running dozers and all heavy equipment for over 20 years. And I know Im a damn good operator. But this GPS is taking me some time to get used to. I feel like Im getting better with each day Im on it. Are there any pointers you could give?
Yea. A JD 650J and a JD700K. Yea. I use auto when i get within a couple tenths of grade. I feel like I'll get it with a little more time. Its just something new. Thanks man. Good work
Nice set up. I’m sure it does a great job. But how may employers can cut a 2 to 1 slop swith out gps. Guess I’m old school but I think it’s a lost art anymore.
+DL Farms. I can, my dad can, my uncle can, most everyone that operates for us can cut a 2 to 1 slope. We have only had GPS for about 2 years we have been doing this for 25 years we know how to grade, speed and efficiency is the objective. We don't use GPS on small jobs very often because it takes time to set up. If your going to stay old school I hope you don't move dirt for a living. Everyone has it now and everyone want to hire people that has them because they get done faster and are more accurate.
I can cut a 2 to 1 slope, or any other slope for that matter, without GPS. If you don't know how to build something without GPS, you're not gonna do it with GPS either. GPS is amazing, but it's not a magic button that builds shit for you

+Joel Ground. Lol! It's not as easy as it looks. As far as hill sides go dozers are probably the most stable equipment there is to ride on a slope.

Ive been running dozers and all heavy equipment for over 20 years. And I know Im a damn good operator. But this GPS is taking me some time to get used to. I feel like Im getting better with each day Im on it. Are there any pointers you could give?
It takes time to get used to, are you using it on a dozer? If so do you have auto mode?
Yea. A JD 650J and a JD700K. Yea. I use auto when i get within a couple tenths of grade. I feel like I'll get it with a little more time. Its just something new. Thanks man. Good work

Nice set up. I’m sure it does a great job. But how may employers can cut a 2 to 1 slop swith out gps. Guess I’m old school but I think it’s a lost art anymore.
+DL Farms. I can, my dad can, my uncle can, most everyone that operates for us can cut a 2 to 1 slope. We have only had GPS for about 2 years we have been doing this for 25 years we know how to grade, speed and efficiency is the objective. We don't use GPS on small jobs very often because it takes time to set up. If your going to stay old school I hope you don't move dirt for a living. Everyone has it now and everyone want to hire people that has them because they get done faster and are more accurate.
I can cut a 2 to 1 slope, or any other slope for that matter, without GPS. If you don't know how to build something without GPS, you're not gonna do it with GPS either. GPS is amazing, but it's not a magic button that builds shit for you
