DiRT Rally 2.0 is a game where your control method is less vital to success than you may think. It's possible to be fast on a controller and it's possible to be fast on a wheel; it's even possible to be fast on a keyboard, just ask @3kliksphilip 😉
I have 20+ years of experience in being fast with a controller in various racing games, so the tips you find in this video should be useful 👍🏻

I finished rally and rally cross modes on dr2 with an f710 and it was the biggest achievement of my life. Second is graduating from oxford.
For anyone feeling it's hard to make small steering movements on a controller - try steering while pushing the stick all the way forward. It makes transitioning from 0 input to very minimal (below 10) much smoother. I started doing this for light corners in Forza, and now it's my main playing style. With a low deadzone, 100 sensitivity and 2/3 linearity it feels great in this game. Give it a try! 👍
This does help 🙂
This is a tactic I used to use on MotoGP games
Wtf, can't believe this helped me right off the bat.. dude that's a great trick!
@@9a2ersame haha
I thought this was my secret tip everyone thinks I use wheel lmao don't tell everyone
Thank you for giving us controller peasants a little bit of hope. I'm going to download the game again because of your input in this video.
Thank you PJ, with your controller setup and some tuning tutorials I managed to get top 200 (PC) on my favorite stage with the Ford escort MK II in less than 80 hours played. I never thought it would be possible. Thanks again!
Your passion for Dirt and rallying is truly showing and it's great to see.
He's crazy on controller and wheel lol
I thought I liked this game before. These settings are fantastic. Thank You! Sub added
Great video. Would now consider buying. (Had previously thought it was a bit of a wheel only game). Shame the career mode looks like a bit of a grind.
The best part of Career are the Daily Challenges where you take in real people every day 🙂
Today tested, great hints, about +50 places up on the daily challenges. Big thx .
Good stuff, can’t wait to try out the settings. This is already my favorite driving game and I only use a gamepad.
After using your controller settings i reach top 200 (125 pos) in global with Porsche GT and automatic transmission ...
For my it's amazing achievement
Thank you!
Well done, the Porsche's not an easy car to drive either 😀
this was a huge difference, cant even describe, great turtorial.
Thanks, I'll definitely try these tips and settings 😁
Thanks m8, that brought much improvement for me :)
Damn i just watched this and improved a lot my driving, thanks for the tips!
controller is literally better for me in every way
this
Samee
Mor fun in whele
Thanks for the advice I didn't no automatic wasn't allowed in rally lol now I'm learning how to gear and still be fast on xbox controller and o boy I'm in the 100s clud sky's no limit now what great game look forward to vid
I will check out input right away when i get home, i have played the game since release year and i never have touched input settings and somehow i've made lot of times in top 100 and top 50 globaly
Thanks for your controller settings, they are awesome.
Glad I could help 🙂
Thx for the setting surprisingly im faster on sticks 🤯
I bought my 1st controller today. Never had a playstation or xbox. Never played serious racing games. Csgo, gta, cod, battlefield is life till now. Lets c how it goes 😁
quick tip for controller: if you're playing on completely default steering settings (like me), try not to flick the joystick to make small inputs on fast corners. It'll make your thumb tired and it'll be hard to manage the car that way. Practice smooth inputs with controller and your driving will feel better
Those controller settings were fucking wizardry I swear. Just playing one game I feel like I am so much more in tune with the controller and feel more comfortable pushing speed. Fucking hell im glad I found this, ur a legend.
Really? That big of a difference? I'M still strugling with the controller.
@@unitedroad10 idk maybe i just got confident and its all placebo but it felt so much more smooth for me after changing
It definitely was an improvement
I’m top 100th and 50th and 10th In a few different maps on the global leaderboard on 10+ tracks on a ps4 controller I’ve only played this for an 3 4 months I love this game never had a steering wheel want one sooooo baaaadddd
I know that you can be quick on controller but I still really want a wheel just to add the realistic factor. I want to feel like I'm actually driving the car.
good luck with that.. i can't play anymore with a wheel.. i lose everytime and it's very frustrating.. with the controller even tho it wasn't as realistic. in my mind i was enjoyin the game more.. with a wheel now it's only frustrating on how difficult it actually is
I use the xbox elite 2 controller and its great for dirt 2 🤩💪🏼 thanx for the vid!
Nice one, it's a good pad 🙂
i havent played 2.0 but ive made several #1 finishes in dirt4 dailies using an xbox controller
Great video PJ. As a full controller player, I have to +1 this video. 🙂
I played on pad for ages before I got my wheel, good to see I'm still fast with it 🙂
Thank PJ, now i can play more better with the ps4 controller
Good luck out there 🙂
I use T300rs Alcantara with T3po but with kids around i needed the space so i buy a gamepad like u said the xbox one... Hmmm its not so bad my only problem is the high speed controll it needs practise.
This is great thanks
Happy to help 🙂
Bumper Cam 😍
Great Video PJ, you need to reposistion your mic though. The plosives when you are speaking are really hard on the ears while using headphones.
Good tip; I noticed after recording a bunch of guides that the mic was a little close.
That really was a great video thank you so much for making it!
One thing, at some point, for the vibration settings, you say "you can feel vibrations though the triggers" but, is that also true if you use an xbox one controller on PC?
Thank you.
I think it might be true on PC, but only if you use the official Xbox wireless adapter. If you simply plug in with USB it doesn't seem to work.
@@PJTierney Thank you Sir!
@@PJTierney Dirt Rally 2.0 don't support impulse triggers on PC unfortunately :/ I would have loved to have them but Codemasters dont care anymore about his game. Sad
@@tcmx8789 It's not about care, it's about a technical limitation.
Impulse triggers require DX12 (which in turn requires Windows 10). DiRT Rally 2.0 was developed on DX11 with the aim of supporting a wider range of PCs.
F1 is on DX12, GRID too.
I imagine future titles will have Impulse Trigger support as we know it's a great feature.
Oh ok, ty for the explications, it makes sens
I got top 50 on a weekly challenge with an Audi Quattro S1. Probably the scariest car yo drive
I'm able to get top 100 on some daily challenges with my controller and my son sitting on my lap watching 😂. Good enough for me.
would love to see you do content for the new WRC game, cheers and hope you are well
I’m ok, just very busy on WRC 🙂
I would like to create WRC tutorials, on the official channel.
Also to note is that many of these games are optimized for a controller and not a wheel, this includes dead zones, holding slip angles etc... not realistic but lots of fun.
Indeed, especially Forza and Project CARS 3.
DiRT Rally 2.0 is pretty much equal though which is good.
I have much more fun with a wheel. A controller is not car driving :/ It kills the immersion for me
@@De-M-oN You are in your room playing. That's not real either 😆
@@Zoran69 much more real than a controller though. Also VR adds a ton to the reality immersion. Maybe later I get a motion rig too.
@@De-M-oN Yeah I know, I'm just messin 😉
With that motion rig and stuff, it's going to be way more fun 😎👍
Which stick to use shorter one or what?
I have a g29 wheel not a fan of how the ffb is i could see how i could have mich more control but its more chill to just hope on my ps5 and not the wheel
Hey PJ can you tell me how to launch of the line please(in rally stages and RallyCross as well) please
Here's what I do:
Rally: Hold the handbrake, keep the throttle steady to about 6,000rpm then floor it once I start. If I'm on very slippery snow or ice I'll launch in 2nd gear.
RX Supercars: Hold the handbrake, shift to 2nd, rev the hell out of it. When the lights go out the tyres should grip fairly quickly.
@@PJTierney what are your button binds I really want to get into using my clutch and what gearbox and transmission do you use?
my man you're a legend
With my 200° Rotation angle on my wheel I absolutely can do quick direction changes as well ;)
I wouldnt be able to drive with insane rotations like 540° or what not..
... and why ghosts are not an option in multiplayer??
I'm waiting for my CSL DD, meanwhile my G29 stopped working, I guess i'm gonna grind some rallying on controller (Wasting Iracing subscription tho :( )
0:04 How are you throttling when your right hand is pointing to us?
I get reasonably fast times (top 100 daily apart from a couple of the tricky RWD cars like the Porsche) & I use automatic gears, the D-Pad for steering, the (A) button for acceleration and the (x) for brake. Just can't calibrate the thumbsticks to anywhere close to my liking.
Why would you use automatic in rally? You may as well be playing nfs or horizon.
Clever, thinkin about the same - when I heard from maestro "small inpusts", I cant imagine I would be patience enought to practice this wiht gamepad.
Wheel is definitely more fun though!
please do a Pc version too
Tip that worked for me: turn the sensitivity down quite a bit
Great video. Would have been nice to have a controller cam to get a better visual of how you change gears.
I mean you litteraly just press a button, won't show you anything interesting unlike a pedal cam
If I recorded this as a standalone I'd try and set up a second camera, but I did this halfway through a livestream and winged it 😅
@@PJTierney well then, excellent work considering!
All the upcoming DR2 tutorials you’re about to see, I recorded them on my livestreams. Some of them were even on the first take 😄
@@crab1018 He said he's using clutch and shifting on controller unless I heard it wrong, where he uses clutch shifting etcetera are all valuable pieces of information. Plus, it's not like it adds tremendous strain to production if you have an extra camera.
I have beaten whole DR1 with all achievements with controller, so you can be fast for sure.
I did the same, only went wheel about a year ago 🙂
Hi mate I'm a new subscriber from Australia, I just got the game today on PS4 Pro, I only have a controller when you say pad are you referring to the D-Pad or the left analogue stick?
“Pad” refers to the whole controller, it’s short for “game pad” 🙂
@@PJTierney Damn must be a newish term I'm an old skool gamer.
@@PJTierney Is Dirt 5 better than Dirt Rally 2.0?
@@truthserum273 No, Do not buy it, I did and regret it. The game lacks lots of content and the gameplay is very arcady and the physics arent as great as they were in dirt 4 or 3. Also its very buggy and the only 2 activities are, playground and story excluding online pvp mode. No rally, No WRX, No tuning, No upgrading cars. Its very basic and bland. Please, dont buy it. I insist
@@joelh3030 Too late lol but I only payed $20
I use the thumb stick to shift 3:59
You can be fast but when you reach a U curve, good luck with that, it dies completely before accelerating. Try it in Greece and tell me how fast it is.
Sounds like a stream challenge to me 😎
That’s why I always shift down one extra gear on corners where I find the car dying
I mean I can hit every hairpin in Greece near flawlessly with controller as long as my head is in the game that day (ADD so rallying gets hairy sometimes lol).
dude i was beating the game so much with me 360 controller.. as soon as i switched to the logitech 923 wheel i can't win anymore.. it's way too difficult
Lots of wheel users in DiRT Rally groups on FB get real butt hurt when you talk about being as fast as them on a controller, without even any assistance 🤣. Owning a wheel doesn’t mean you’re a good driver, sorry.🖕🏻
Great vid👍🏻
I play on a wheel mainly, but I cut my teeth on a pad. Ultimately so long as you're having fun it doesn't matter what you use 😀
that's because games have built in assists that you don't see. How people replicate 540-900 degree of rotation on gamepad? You don't without artificial
Because you're essentially playing the game on easy mode (yes, even without any assists) I play without assists on controller as well and it is incredibly easier. There are advantages to a good wheel but what you don't realize is, to be truly fast on dr2 with a wheel/shifter pedals etc you have to learn heel toe, trail braking, shifting fast with an H pattern (most people don't have sequential setups) etc etc. Telling a wheel user you're good with controller is like telling a fighter jet pilot that you're good at flight simulator.
@@MrSirGiuseppe Yup, just like a Sim Racer telling a Real Rally Driver or Race Driver, he/she is good at 'Racing' 😁
I am new to this game, was playing time trial and somehow in the middle of the race the car seems to go bust when I'm on 4th gear, wtf why ?
Settled on 85 sensitivity, 4 Linearity, 5 Dead zone for steering. I'll compare the 100 / 3 / 2 thing again sometime
so what setting do you use now?
Is it the same for Rally Cross as well?
Yes
Would the control settings work in Dirt Rally 1?
yes
@@christiantaylor1495 and what about dirt5? What are the best controller settings?
What are your binds and gearbox
I'm using Manual + Clutch.
If you look at my controller settings guide (long version) I think the bindings are shown in there and I haven't changed them.
@@PJTierney what transmission
yes you can df i played on ps4 end i got top 150/200 on some maps . end i didt even play this game that much . only 100 hours
Do you have the recommended assists? Because it is hard to drive without them
Yes: Everything off.
You want the car to slide as that's how you keep it under control.
@@PJTierney OK thanks
There is an adjustment that the car brakes automatically???
Not sure about auto-braking but there is ABS which might help you. In Rally you want to slide though so no assists is usually better.
Well PJ, could you do a video about a racing wheel and how to be efficient in game.
I have a bunch of guides coming up where I drive on a wheel, so hopefully they help.
👍
Fun video, buuut the R5 MKII is not even close to being the fastest car in DR2.0. Not even top-5. But its a very good car, in the game... :-)
From the feedback I got from esports organisations, it's by far the strongest R5 Class car (which is why it's banned in many of their leagues).
There's a chance the 2000cc cars could be faster over a single Stage but for the most part the R5s are the ones with the fastest times.
This car IS OP, I Have WR in Germany and so many Time top 10 whit controler, by the way great video @PJ Tierney
i have an xbox controller with pc setup and triggers do not vibrate at all in dirt rally 2.0
honestly only game that makes my triggers vibrate is forza horizon 5 (i played also fh3 and 4 but they do not do that saddly)
Front wheel and 4 wheel i can drive good on controller but rearwheel i suck
It's possible but real hard, I have a guide on RWD cars coming up soon.
@@PJTierney oke awesome i also wanne get the trophy with the quatro with new cars ive been in top 400 but the quatro is a diffrent piece of cake do you also have tips for that?
I have a quattro video already live on the channel 🙂
@@PJTierney aaah nice im gonna watch it thanks
Yes, but the more practice and a good tune the better youll get. I keep my RWD cars very steady with accelerating and tune my LSD low with small turn in angles on the toe
I saw you have a clutch button how do you use this on controller?
I map it to A (X on PlayStation) so that I can reach it faster 🙂
There's a Clutch override option in the settings, turn that on too.
You won't need Clutch to shift every gear, but it will help when you need to kick the car out of slow corners.
@@PJTierney ah oke thanks il try it sometime
@@PJTierney its maybe a cheecky question but can you make a video about the clutch im not getting it its not working but i think i do it wrong
@@JJ-rc4sc Your best bet is to look up heel and toe techniques from real rallying. 🙂
@@PJTierney oke man thanks ill try that and try to do it on controller ✌
Благодаря твоим настройкас я сумел овладеть заднеприводными авто! Ранее это казалось просто невозможным. Спасибо большое!
how the hell do you keep so much grip?
I'm faster on controller than I am on my wheel, wheel is just way more fun and immersive
PS5 or New XBox COntroller is Better for Dirt Rally 2.0 ? I will use it just for this game.
Xbox One Controller is really good.
@@PJTierney Do u think that xbox controller is my best option for Drit rally 2.0 steam ?
My limit is 100 euro max.
@@Tripokaridos22 An Xbox One Controller is all you need.
If you can find an Xbox One Elite Controller under that price even better, but the normal one is just as good.
@@PJTierney great thank u so much for replying to me.
how on earth can you focus on driving while talking? lol - i'm adapting and tweaking my controller setting, it's never ending tweaking and testing for me. i had ps4 controller for a while, now is totally broken and opted for on of those new xbox controllers. gets a lot of use to get with, but the default setting for it are terrible. needs lots of tuning especially coming off a ps4 controller on a pc
when you’ve been driving in games like these long enough it becomes second nature.
these things always improve with time and patience
its me or xbox one controller triggers do not work in dirt 2.0?
You're not alone. Wonder how does he enable the trigger rumble?
its borderline impossible to be good with controller in group b regardless of whatever you do
Yes and no. As a pro controller driver, It is fast when Its a good day. For my settings i keep my linearity at the middle and sensitivity up, I just learn to be very steady with my input. I use L1 as my clutch and use 2 fingers for braking and clutching, while my thumb steers. I got used to it a while ago but its very quick rev matching and clutch kicking. I have some videos on my channel with some stages, Youll see more of how it is driving on controller on a pro level. I also do WRX and i have the same input. For my turning i dont tap my stick left or right, I just countersteer very fast when i need to and hold my input where needed. Maybe im just more experienced than you are but great video anyway
Thanks for the insight 🙂
What the fuck is a pro controller driver lol
@@Konnecta-kb9gg He is a driver that prefers to use a controller.
'Pro' as in professional, as in you get paid? 😆
You mean you are a controller user whom is very good or you are fast and use a controller.
Copied your sensitivity setup. Can't thank you enough, went from being semi unplayable to achieving half decent times!
Nice one!
I did top 200 in a monthly challenge before i got my wheel. You could be fast with that, but why should you. Its not that fun.
Rule 1: Follow the Fun
If you enjoy the game more on a wheel, use a wheel.
If you enjoy the game more on a pad, use a pad.
Fortunately the game is good on both although these days I prefer wheel 🙂
@@PJTierney Yeah there is no debate in that. I've played with the controller, because I didn't have the money to buy a normal wheel. I think the controller is still good a hardware to learn weight transfering and the basics principles to drive a car fast.
My example is that I sucked a lot with the wheel after the controller and I still have problems with RWD cars, but I don't have to use HUD, I can follow a pace notes with ears only, throttle and brake management etc. So i'm not bashing the controller its just a more lackluster experience than a mediocre wheel. But still good to play and learn with that.
I agree 🙂
Speaking of RWD that’s the next rally guide. I wanted to do a RWD video before I got into the location guides so it should be useful. I’ve gotten pretty good at Group B RWD over the past few months, regularly Top 20 in Dailies.
I use a ps4 controller on my pc
My question is how are you going100 mph on 3rd gear when I'm barely at 50 on 3rd gear and I'm using the same car
I use metric measurements 🙂
Wheel is slow:)) ,hood camera is higher
Wait, you can talk while you race? If i even said 1 sentence during a race, i'll crash
It's taken a lot of practice but yes I can 😀
@@PJTierney Isnt it rather because in Dirt the stages are all way too short and even with these short stages the little bit longer one is apparently just splitted into small ones, instead of being at least different areas, so that your codriver got useless, because you did learn the stages as if it is monza?
It turns into a racing game with these way too short stages instead of an actual rally game.
Please do longer stages like the reality has. Or at least make them all different instead of having the 16km one just splitted up into 4 to 6km ones.
Can i be fast on mnk
I've seen world records set on keyboard.
I can confirm the xbox triggers are so much better than the ps5 triggers when it comes to racing games they have a much longer travel and you get way more control of the throttle on xbox. Plus i hate how ps5 triggers kick on you and they usually just break anyways
You had 2 left turn where you stopped.. So not really good turn..
Why use a controller... when you have a keyboard? 😏
Installing DiRTRally.txt right now...
But can you be fast on a keyboard?
Yes. Well I can't but some people can.
Check out 2kliksphilip, he was in TOP 50 in regular events, playing with keyboard and third person cam.
No, if you play weak controller.
Controller noob
i managed to finish the stage so fast my girlfriend got mad and wanted to break up
😅
No, you can´t.
Unless you want to destroy your television after the 99th restart.
Buy a wheel.
There´s no control at high speed.
