The real group b drivers when asked how do manage to keep your pace up with the crowds? They responded "we have to pretend they are trees."
Lmao
Moving trees
@@diegoignacioavilesvalencia1991 seems like the phrase "a tree crossed the road" gets new definition
“They are only bushes to us-only trees; if we think these are people, we cannot drive” - Walter Röhrl talking about the spectators of group b rallys
trees that wanna get hit
Clearly not a very good simulation of Group B, as I didn't see a single spectator on the road.
think you'll find least important thing in race sims is spectator's on the track
@iTheGeek r/lostredditors
yes going full throttle through a splitting crowd was insane back in the 80s
Spectators are very important for the immersion. Bur i prefer to drive without them.
Luke Clayton r/lostredditors
6:00 best explination of the car ever!! «Nothing, nothing, nothing, turbo, BIG turbo and then a tree»
No, I think it jus sums up Group B... I don't seem to have a follow-up...
Well, that's because you should keep always some gas and keep pressure and revs up enough, even with u-turns. That's rally. First you lift gas, you just slide..
@@mielikuvitelma I'm finding that out the hard way.
Except for FWD, you have to let go of the throttle a lot in order to shift weight to the front and be able to turn quickly.
yea, all the old turbocharged cars worked that way. Nothing, nothing, nothing, dead
@@DavidGarcia-oi5nt I cannot WAIT to stop using FWD cars actively, the Fulva and Corsa understeer like a bitch.

@himanshu9418 Nah.. the game just runs like crap on PC
@@nobodyimportant7380 kinda agree with you, the first Dirt Rally ran so well, I can run it above 50 fps on my 10 year old i3 3217u notebook
Me, a C-tier Dirt rally player, doing Group B in historic for the first time: "Lets pick this yellow Audi, i like it, it looks like a big Go-Kart"
Me, 5 restarts later in the first course: "This is not a Go-Kart"
That's exactly how I felt :D Being used to Lancia Fulvia it didn't take long to realize that you can't just floor it like you can other cars before it.
its a Go- Krash
Dude I bought the Evo and almost uninstalled the game 😂
@@KristiansKazmers I feel like the turbo lag in the game is a tad too exaggerated so it makes the boosted Group B cars behave like they have way more power than they do.
i feel you lol
How the hell can you talk and drive in this game?
When I'm on DiRT rally my concentration tongue comes out, no chance of me saying anything clearly😂
I can't even talk lmao and if I talk it goes like (vroom vroom mom wai.. nyooom skyyyyyyrt bam)
Not just talk, pay attention to his voice, its like watching rally on TV with a commentator talking :D
Jimmy is one of the best at talking about his driving while he is driving I have seen. It is almost as if he is his own spotter no matter the car or type of race. He seems to weave his own thoughts into words on what he needs to do as most people do silently in their heads ( I Know I do LOL ) while at the same time he's able to mix in commentary about what just happened or how he needs to do XYZ next lap etc.
Yeah we get it theres a comment like this on every one of his videos
@@lukamilic exactly what i was thinking maybe a game commentator in a past life
James Hunt had the perfect explenation of the powerband of a turbocharged engine: "When you floor the pedal.. first you get nothing, but then you get everything!".
And on God are they fun, ive spent plenty of time driving powerful v8s but nothing compares to the fun of turbo lag. Waiting waiting AND WERE OFF
@@Pippy1 yeah, and you need to blip the throttle to keep the turbo's spooled up.
video freezed because it couldn't handle the brutality of the 205
i thought was the only one
RUclips makes a lot of oopsies
At 3:55, Jimmer’s camera also froze, meaning it was RUclips’s fault
XD yeap
This thing is my favorite car in the whole game
The turbo gauge in the 205T16 really adds to the experience
Actually funny enough for the 205 t16 Evo2 that isn't a pure boost gauge. It's a purpose made barometer to manage the most accurate reading from using the Garrett T31 (11 blades steel turbine 56.62/64.95mm in/out diameter, 7+7 blades aluminum compressor 54.92/75.95mm in/out diameter) turbocharger with air/air intercooler, Bosch K-jetronic multipoint hydraulic fuel injection when they ran them between 2.6 and especially 3.0 bar. Absolutely beautiful machine through and through. Was glad to have the chance to sit in one while over in Europe back in 2010!
@@SemiMobilLampShade you certainly know your stuff ;)
@@SemiMobilLampShade what do you mean it isn't a boost gauge?
@@superbarnie I meant what I said. A boost gauge is more specialized than a normal barometer these days. In the original Group B T16 Evo2 they just slapped a traditional barometer in the car that was slightly built up to give a more accurate reading of the boost pressure at the top end of the rev range. Other type of monitors today are commonly boost controllers as well as simple gauges for information display.
Back then the driver had to rely much more on their knowledge of the boost pressure in the T16 along with the massive amounts of lost pressure from poor shifts if the driver was making mistakes. Instead of any part really being managed by an ECU for the BEST boost via digital parameters it was mainly the driver.
It seems like a semantic based argument for me to make but the cars are special for a reason. This was a mechanical beauty and the drivers smart enough to respect and learn the car saw the most success with it. Just remember the T16 used a barometer.
@@SemiMobilLampShade A boost gauge is a barometer though. "Boost gauge" is a colloquialism of barometer, specific to the automotive world (obviously).

Virus Osku 6k pc lmao go back to sleep
In DR 1 the boost gauge on this car used to just rise as the revs went up, here it looks like they modelled the turbo to work independently, that's really nice, one of the things I wanted from 2.0.
The turbo lag is even more apparent in 3rd person on the 205, it crawls forward for a second then suddenly takes off like a jet plane. I'm fairly convinced that the front wheels leave the ground lmao
@@elementalsheep2672 lol xD
I dont understand. Is that how its supposed to look irl? In DR1 it looks cooler
CbtMedic 0z yes. That’s how it looks in real life. DR1 always looked like it was just was kinda rising with the rpm. Which isn’t really how it works in real life so having it like this in DR2 makes it look cool.
“That’s just one big almost accident for that entire period”
That sums up my few years with Dirt on a controller 😆
I remember Timo Salonen, a then Peugeot factory driver, saying the 205 T 16 had "enough power".
Hahaha sounds like something a finn would say
Only instance in history a race car driver would admit that so it probably had.
@@t1hero "enough power" coming from a finn means something like "i guess it'll do" or "its ok.." :D
Henri Toivonen said that the Delta S4 had too much power, in an interview just before he crashed and died... Spring Greetings from Finland to all of you Dirt Rally fans around the world.
Remember hearing something that Salonen was supposed to be in a ad in wich he drove something like 160-190km/h on a long straight but it never made into public since Timo was driving with one hand and smoking with another...without powersteering
No center diff so the handbrake would just lock the wheels, but I 'll forgive you using it. Please get the Quattro E2 out.
yeah, just use the clutch. using the handbrake without clutch should lock up rear wheels on the old cars. pretty damn sure it did on the group b cars in first dirt rally.
group b cars sure had handbrakes.
@@DeaShoost The handbrake is supposed to lock up the rear wheels, but a group b awd car would also lock up the front wheels which you don't want.
@@KalElRedKi know its will lock the wheels, but not if you press the clutch.
@@DeaShoost IRL in Group B cars it still did as there was no Center diff
@@stefanroadman4180 haha oh yeah, that's right of course, sorry about that.
Well if they made the 205 like in real life, it must be insane, as Ari Vatanen said: "We were afraid of using the bigger turbo because even with the little one we slipped on every gear". With this said, you could imagine how crazy Gr. B cars were
XxMarkitosxX “wait there’s a BIGGER one”
8:28... you upgraded the "Scandinavian Turn" to a "Viking Turn"
I replayed it 3 times just to appreciate step by step!!

This is how I want to take on hairpins.
Without the risk, of course.
*Scandinavian flick
In Jimmy Broadbent's hands it's a "Scandinavian Flick". In Richard Hammond's hands it's a "crash".
And then the straight after that is quite insane

"One big almost accident" sums group B up pretty nicely
Amazing. Now the only thing that the game lacks is a realistic damage model so we can see the effects of rally driving on the car

That 205 is just mental. Wow. And both cars sound insanely good!
Call me crazy, but I reckon Codemasters needs to bring back the GRID series... and turn that into a full-on sim series.
Grid 2 was such a missed opportunity!
Most of the draw of the first game was the absolutely crazy difference between it and every other game of the time in terms of the interaction with the environment, other cars, and the running of your team/sponsors and liveries.
Ever since Grid, Codemasters has for some reason consistently scaled that way down with each new game, so as far as I know the first game is the only track racing game with individual tyres in the huge stacked barriers around the tracks, hired teammates, simple but effective livery and sponsor customisation, fighty AI and really weighty gritty wrenching crashes. The trend of amazing sound design started with this game too.
It still holds up, but If they released Grid today with weather, pitstops, more tracks, and realistic handling, I think I would cry tears of joy.
@@C.I... Codemasters was pretty much on the verge of going bankrupt for a while around the time iirc., so it's not a surprise the projects suffered (see cockpit view in Autosport for example)
Grid has and always will be my favorite racing game of all time. I played that game every night for hours! I had one great race that is hard to explain but it had the room chatting how I won. It was a great feeling, miss it so much.
Eonymia
I loved the dash-cam view in Grid Autosport though. They were like the dash-cams in the original Dirt rally and Dirt 4, which i thought looked perfect. Dirt rally 2.0's dash-cams look just like a second cackpit view but with the wheel missing. It wouldn't bother me if you had more adjustment in camera position in cackpit view, so you could adjust it to a position that looks correct with a steering wheel.
Out of interest, guys, how does GRID 1 hold up as a sim? I see people referring to it as "arcadey" but with all the assists off it still seems pretty difficult and finnicky to me, other than the lack of weather/tire wear/refuelling.
This is the first of your vids I’ve watched and got to say superb stuff love your enthusiasm and driving ability got yourself a sub keep up the great work

Delta s4 you should’ve ran bro . Easily the craziest group b car. Twin charged animal
In real live the T16 was the easiest Group B top car to drive. It was really easy to handle. The Delta S4 was more extreme, because the weak point was the rear axle. The Audi was with the front engine like an arrow. Very stable at jumps and high speed straights, but horrible to force into corners.
Was the t16 a front or mid engine car?
@@jamesferro433 offset mid rear engine. Watch any thousand lakes rally footage to see it jump.
@@mountjoy23 ah okay thanks!
And by far, 6R4 was one of the hardest because of the short wheelbase and the instant torque.

You are basically both shouting because for you it is still that loud, but then you are additionally turning down the volume for us.
In a real rally car, we could still hear you and experience all the sound, so why not doing it fully realistic? I don't understand the sim racing approach, when you can't really "feel" the moment, because you turn down the volume so much, that I am basically just sitting in the office next to you.
