    I started sim racing my last year of high school. I had just gotten my first paycheck from McDonald’s. (Around $700) I bought a g29 and hooked it up to my ps4. I used my mother’s ironing board as my “rig” I literally only paid for my g29. Just think outside the box and you can definitely get into sim racing for very cheap.

    • @Bes1997_

      Palace huge racing fan here. I’ve been having a ps4 since 2015, always dreamed of a wheel but never had the chance to have it before a year ago. Then I found a good occasion from the French amazon, the thrustmaster T150 RS for 120€ (here in Italy they cost at least 170-200€). I got extremely lucky because it also was the exact wheel I was aiming to. Finally got it with my savings, pulled off a shelf under the desk’s surface and adapted it to be a rig. A normal chair is the seat and a rug is the line for putting the pedals. I also had the games already, so it was a super cheap entry.

Use the the real throttle position sensor and throttle body for feel. It'd be fun to have a sim with doors, windows and a working stereo. Other possibilities are cutting off the front at the firewall and behind the front seats. ATX power supply for 12v and 5v things.

    PSA: If finding compatible wheels for the PS4 and Turismo is going to break your budget, there's an open source gadget called the GIMX which might help out. It plugs in between the PS4 and your wheel and emulates compatible wheels, so that you can use a cheaper wheel in GT Sport instead of buying an officially licenced wheel ($$$). I've had the G29 with shifter since april. It's held up pretty well so far, but I can tell the motors have gotten a little weaker over time and sound worse during the initial calibration. The wheel can be noisy too, but I don't mind it. They give a 2 year warranty on the wheel anyway so if it goes out on me I can get it repaired or a new one. Been a huge of racing games since Gran Turismo on PS1. It was only when GT Sport came out that I decided to finally buy a wheel and pedals. Got the G29 and built my own rig out of PVC pipe and the passenger seat of an old Focus. Materials for the rig cost me about £25. While it's obviously not as rigid (could probably be with better design, but I just winged it) as a metal or wood rig, it does the job great and it's incredibly light. After about an hour with the wheel I was shattering my best times done with the controller.
    In total, the whole racing rig cost me about £235 and was worth every penny. Clocked up over 40,000 miles on GT Sport, wheel, pedals and rig still going strong. Anyone who loves their racing and is toying with the idea of going for a wheel, do it!

    I started out getting an entry-level Logi Driving Force GT ... already had a gaming PC. Then some time later i found a deal on a used Logi G27. Once I bought it, I realized things were getting serious. This wheel was so much better than my previous DFGT. I had it mounted to my computer desk, but it didn't take long to realize that I needed this mounted firmly. Some time after that I found a deal on a Logi G29 and bought a wheel mount. This was while upgrading my PC. It's worth it! The DFGT was $150, sold it for $80 and bought the G27 for $120 (haven't sold it yet). Bought the G29 with shifter for $200 and the mount for $60. $260 for the G29 and mount is worth it!!
    If you're in a situation determining whether to get a G27 or G29, get the G29. They moved the controls off the shifter onto the wheel, and that alone makes it worth it. Leaning over to the shifter to navigate menus got annoying REALLY quickly.

      I found AC to be surprisingly playable on a controller if you’re experienced enough with a controller. Same for pCars2. As a kid I always used a controller on Burnout, older F1 games, Gran Turismo etc. and when I started to pick up racing games and play them a bit more again with F1 2016 a few years back I just turned off all assists and tried to get used to it. At the time, I could easily manage everything (no ABS, no racing line, etc.) except no traction control, but throughout the years I learnt how to do that as well. I think I’m pretty competitive for being on a controller compared to most other people on the F1 games and even though I’m not *as* good in pCars2, I still often got compliments on my speed and racecraft from people who were impressed and surprised I use a controller to play a wheel-oriented game and manage to do fairly well. The hardest part without feedback like you have in a wheel is consistency. You often don’t feel the tires dropping off, the grip levels changing etc. and you need to do this by intuition and visuals which is very hard at first. You also need to be very precise with all your inputs (braking, throttle and steering) since moving the stick even half a centimeter can throw the car off-balance. Thats the key; being smooth.
      TL;DR - using a controller on sim/casual racing games is very much possible and enjoyable if you know what you’re doing so if you don’t have money for a wheel (yet) its definitely something to try

    There's one argument I feel should be addressed when discussing getting a wheel for any current console at this moment in time. Transitioning from either Xbox 360 to One or PS3 to PS4 required buying a new wheel as none of the old ones would be compatible with current hardware. As far a I know it is unclear yet, if this will happen again with the upcoming transition into PS5/Series X, so I'd rather wait before getting a wheel for a current gen console.

    Sim racing is like wine. You can spend a lot but cheap and expensive gets you drunk equally.
    Hey, advice for frugal racers like me about screens: You can live without 3screens and VRs using a 27" or even a 24, putting the monitor REAL close to the G29, almost over the 2 clamp knobs. Doing that you can use low FOV views and still see both wheel arches and apexes quite well. Mount the screen on a sturdy desk, and use those monitor arms to move the screen over and back when you need to work or study with it. Normally cockpits need 43"s because the screen is a hand behind the wheel.
    Instead of a DIY PVC cockpit I suggest get a door, 2 trestles and some 3d printed chair brakes. You can get a pretty strong desk to play and study without the need of having a too focused furniture in your house.

I quickly realized that setting up the wheel (even if it should be compatible with the game) was a nightmare, so I bought a PS5 and Gran Turismo(I only play arcade type racing games). If I could give everyone a single recommendation coming into sim racing it would be that if you don't already have a console, build a cheap pc. There's an almost unlimited amount of hrs worth of driving content with better graphics, wheel support and so many more titles. With ryzen and rx cards or nvidias 1050 or 1060 prices now it's so cheap to build a pc that is more than enough for sim racing for about the cost of a new Xbox One X and a game or 2. If you already have a console and aren't really serious about sim racing then I would by all means just go with that till the bug bites and you do want to plunge in deeper to sim racing. Great vid as always Chris!

    • @Arokh1997
      @Arokh1997 4 года назад

      yes. But a used console is like 80 bucks, while a cheap entry level gaming PC is at least double that (even if you buy used). I'm a PC gamer myself, but I can see how some people just can't (or don't want to) spend that much money.

    • @jkalash762
      @jkalash762 4 года назад +4

      @@Arokh1997 um, unless you're talking about getting an ebay console and taking that chance a used xbox one s runs about $150. Factor in the cost of games for console and after buying a couple games even used you're going to be well over $200. You can easily run any sim on basically junk hardware unless you want vr. Even my old thinkpad with an i5 can run assetto and r3e with decent graphics. Once you factor in the cost of games an older used pc is the better value. I can get the advantage a console has over a pc in the same price range for general gaming use but like I said if you're focused on sim racing and don't have a console, pc is a better starting point. Consoles are just way too limited in sim racing content and what they do get has so much dumbed down, liked locked fov, interface latency, and general wheel support trying to sim race on a console gets extremely frustrating in it's limitations in a short period of time. Especially once you come to the realization you could have bought a cheap used workstation, tossed a $100 graphics card in, maybe a little ram and have a machine that can handle any of the current titles very easily. You add in the amazing amount of great mod content available for free for titles that are already insanely cheap and the pc really pulls away.

At this point in time going into the next gen of consoles with the cost of a second gen ryzen and rx graphics cards buying a console that dated at that type of cost isn't worth it. I mainly use xbox and have dumped all the money on that side of things and I can say from first hand experience it isn't the money saver people think. Especially when you factor in the life span of a console to even an entry level gaming pc today. A basic pc with a ryzen 2600 and an rx580 is a very cheap build and can run any sim title at graphics well beyond what a console can until you go up to the one x. Not to mention the fact that they don't even come with a shifter and any option other than the Logitech shifter will cost another £150. Even though the G27 doesn't necesarily lower my lap times, it doesn't provide consistency, detailed FFB and imersion, and if you are drifiting the G27 does lack the rotational speed you may need with some cars while drifting. I hope Logitech decides to make a new wheel soon that is belt driven and more accesible to budget concerned consumers because I feel like there are many people who want something right in the middle of the t300rs and the g29.

    i think i need to make "how to start sim racing as cheap as possible" by myself, i know noone will pay attention but, you can do it really cheaper... aim on old wheels, and not on new ones, buy wheel from ebay or something like that, seat is not a need, its just for flex it doesnt add anything, you dont need 3 pedal set as most cars has sequential transmission so the clutch is useless, your wheel should have at least 90 degree on both sides, force feedback is also a need, as it gives you much beter idea of what the car is doing and you will feel beter too, so basically only thing u need is decent wheel, and pedals, shifter and handbrake are just for flex and so is the seat gloves and things like this, i recommend Logitech driving force, or logitech formula force, or logitech driving force ex, these wheels you can get easily for 40 euros and if you are lucky enough you can get them even for 10 euros :) i have 400+ hours on racing games mostly dirt rally series, and its absolutely fine, i dont need anything else, i mean like i would like to have beter wheel but its price is absolutely retarded if you think what it takes to make a wheel...

      My recommendation for you would be as follows-
      CPU- AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
      Very powerful cpu, will handle just about anything you can throw at it.
      Motherboard- MSI B450 tomahawk. My personal mobo, very solid board.
      Memory- cheapest 16gb ddr4 3000 or higher you can find
      GPU- AMD RX 5700 or 5700 XT
      Best value for the money, a great card.
      A good power supply, 500+ watts at least 80+ bronze rated.
      The case is up to your personal preference, all in all, should cost around $750-$850. You can head over to pcpartpicker.com and play around with the build configurator and gauge pricing. Good luck

    Thank you for giving realistic and mutual info. During this lock down, I dusted off my ps4 and Xbox one. I do recreational racing in real. Drag racing and time attack. With the tracks closed, I started playing forza and gt sport to get my fix. It really is fun, even with a controller. Started to contemplate buying a setup but I decided to wait until lock down is over to see if I stick to it as life goes back to normal. Will consider the Logitech if I do. Thanks again and to anyone wanting to try real racing. You don’t need a Porsche and the Nurburgring. Get a Miata or something cheap, do the safety mods required by the track and try some auto x or just have fun at the local track. Like this, it can be cheap or expensive. Up to you. Thanks again for the info. Very professional.

    look i play Assetto Corsa on pc with a ps4 controller, and im able to race quite well, my only gripe is it can get a little twitchy at times, and a wheel WOULD help with that, and make inputs smoother..but if you cannot budget a wheel and can only use a controller..do not fret..you can race perfectly fine against other drivers with some practice..a wheel won't make you any better..its all on you..some of the fastest drivers out there use key board and mouse, so if you like sims and only got a controller..go ahead and pull the trigger on it and drive your heart out, you wont be disappointed
