Regarding #5, imo you should also have mentioned desk setups and not only rigs. Assuming someone starts from 0, without a pc, desk, monitors, ok, you of course need all that stuff, but I could imagine most people who start sim racing already have played other games, so already have a "gaming space" they could also turn into a desk setup for sim racing. Maybe could have been mentioned as the "tight on space" variant.

Getting into sim racing does not need to be that expensive. I spent 100€ on second hand g29 setup (wheel, pedals, shifter) and 4€ on asetto corsa from kinguin. Totally happy learning the basics with this setup and trying out if this is something I want to invest more time and money into. That changed very quickly now I’m in for over £5k. Mid range PC,profile rig, proper bucket seat, 16nm DD wheel base. Load cell pedals. Sequential shifter hand break, haptic feed back in the seat etc. I’m totally addicted to it lol. Iv always loved motorsport, now I can kind of get a taste of what it like. Although sim racing can be approached with a small budget, and still be really fun. It can also get very expensive very fast.

Rule of thumb, if you don't already have a PC don't go overboard on your rig. Fanatec DD Pro would be the highest I'd go if you don't plan on building a PC. It's also a good stepping stone just in case you do think about going the PC route in the future. All the things you buy for it will work with higher end products like the DD1/2.

This is a VERY expensive hobby...but listening to folks who actually know what they're doing (yes, even you Oscar 😂) can help quite a bit. I'm currently using my first DD wheel (I was a Thrustmaster T-300 guy for years), but I did it by being patient and waiting for the sale of the year: Fanatec CSL DD. I'm a PC racer, so the standard version was enough for me and I went for the BMW livery as it was as cheap as the standard wheel version. I use a cheap-ish Amazon steel wheel stand that folds up and that has a pretty cool attachment that allows for a racing/office chair to pop into it and hold it solid and it works great! This allows for a more compact setup which I need. It all works well together.
I'm more into dirt rallying, and sometimes I just wanna have fun (Forza series for this old guy). Full on racing games, like AC, IRacing, etc. gives me hives sometimes...I actually hate not the games but too many of the folks who play them. Nothing ruins a game more than the other idiots who play it, for real.
Great tips, Oscar, more folks need to know them BEFORE they buy a Logitech and curse it after using it for a few minutes 😂

My simracing hobby started back in 1985 and will last to the end of my days.
Just on my 3rd just above entry level simrig since 1999 and $/time ratio is extremely low.
At present mostly at this setup:
    T300RS-GT + T-LCM + 2xT8HA + flexible NLR F-GT Lite.
Often questioned why I don't spend more, having borrowed much more expensive equipment on more occasions.
Answer is I'm having a fun, cozy and extremely pleasant time every single time with my relatively cheap mainstream rig.
Main reason is I relax, feels like my blood pressure lowers, my heart beat turns down, getting in the zone of extreme pleasure feeling. And by that way I can hardly be grumpy when somethimg unfair happens. Just laughing of the bizarre situations sending me off when it happens. And then onwards to next enjoyable moment.
Life is too short to get bothered. And now into my spine that thr obstacle situations is part of racing and is best delt with by emtracing it.
    Just like life itself.

Where does the Formula 1 series of games categorize: Sim / Sim-Cade / Arcade?
I’ve been playing since 2019 thanks to drive to survive. But I’m thankful because that was never available as a child when watching Shumi tear up the field. So it was a good way to catch back up.
I get the feeling the game leans a bit towards the arcade feeling. All the elements of Formula 1 are in the game but what sets them apart is they cater to the casual player.
I’m not sure what’s going to happen to the franchise. Since EA all the other sporting games lean a little more towards the sim although I don’t know how true that is since you cant have an input that is like slap shooting a puck in real life like you can a wheel.
I’m looking to purchase as my first. I know it has to be responsive. My buddy and I play co op mode. He the PS4 myself the PS5. I love the feedback from the controller so having a wheel that is dead would be so brutal. I’d rather stay on the controller.
Any suggestions on a wheel, pedal, base DD system for $500CDN??

Your last point of space requirements is what is really crushing me at the moment. I purchased pretty high end controllers 15+ years ago. They’ve actually held up just fine to the present day but the wheel isn’t FFB and the manufacturer is no longer in business.
“OK, I may have some money to upgrade so let’s look.” Every single modern pedal set that’s of moderately comparable quality to what I’m used to seems to require mounting in a rig. I do not have room for a rig or a wheel stand. I drive at my desk in my small office room. There is simply no floor space for a sim-specific installation. Period.
I haven’t given up yet. But for the time being I’m feeling pretty crushed. It just more or less feels like I’m getting squeezed out of enjoying the hobby I’ve enjoyed for nearly two decades because…while I can afford the equipment…some of that equipment itself basically needs a house bigger than mine.
Again, I’m not stating all this as facts or absolutes. It’s the impression I’m currently feeling while trying to figure out “where do I go from here” with equipment that is eventually going to need replacing. Absolutely first world problems, but it still really sucks when your facing it for the one activity you’ve enjoyed doing more than any other for the past 20 years or so.

You just need a way to brace the pedals against the wall or against the desk, etc. I race at a corner desk that has a section in the middle. I wanted my pedals higher so I built a wood stand and mounted the pedals to that. I did just have them on the floor at one point. Simforge, Fanatec, Moza all have pedals that have some level of adjustment and would work. Even the Heusinkveld pedals would work. I personally prefer pedals that can either be mounted individually (Simforge, Heusinkveld) or moved from side to side.

I like the driving to be pretty realistic but get straight into racing without too much faffing about so simcade is ideal. I started on some old Gran Turismo games but found out that even a pathetic non-gaming PC can run old games like Assetto Corsa, Richard Burns Rally, Live For Speed etc. My FFB wheel must be about as basic as they get, but without ever having tried a direct drive etc, I am blissfully unaware of the difference.

I am checking out Project Cars 2. Frankly, tired of hearing I have to invest in a wheel and other hardware, just to see if I like "sim". Even a couple of hundred dollars is not chump change to me. I found controller settings for PC2, and checking out the genre using PC2 career mode. Using career mode, I can adjust the AI both for my skill level, and using a controller. I likely will only ever race AIs, no multi-player. Am I out of whack in this process?

I'm really surprised more sim racing people don't use VR. Do the popular games not support it? I only play Dirt Rally 2.0. Personally I find the addition of depth perception utterly game changing and I can't imagine wanting to ever play on any kind of monitor setup again. I went from being totally useless on just about any technical stage to nailing hairpins regularly. I am still (for now) using my 20 year old Logitech wheel which is so old the force-feedback is no longer supported by drivers. Aside from being a much better driving experience because you can truly perceive the corners as they approach, VR is going to do way more for your immersion than a fake cockpit. It doesn't matter (for pure immersion at least) that your wheel is a cheap piece of plastic clamped to a desk because all you see is the interior of your car with your co-driver and everything. It really starts to feel like the gloved hands on the wheel are yours. If you combined it with a good force-feedback solution and one of those fancy moving rigs it would be absolutely insanely real feeling, really only lacking proper G-forces.
I think money for a rig and monitors is much more wisely invested in a good VR solution, again unless the game you want to play simply doesn't support it. But my experience at least is that once you experience racing in VR you will just stop playing games that don't support it. It's that much better. Another major bonus is that the VR can be used for many other awesome kinds of games as well, not just racing.

5 things I personally wish I knew before getting into sim racing.
    - Just cause the game genre is "racing" doesn't mean the wheel will work unless you have Logitech than it will always work.
    - DD Wheels are simply just very expensive game controllers, no different than accessories for Guitar Hero, simply expensive.
    - Devs of modern era arcade games are too lazy to be bothered with wheel support. Re-Volt from 1999 has wheel support long before Moza and it works, imagine that.
    - If I could do it again, I should've waited to get a wheel base since they came down in price so quickly.
    - Kinda regret getting a Wheel. There is no more fun racing titles. And I know fun is subjective but these are titles I think about sometimes to give you an idea when I say "fun". I'm talking about the MotorStorm series, Tokyo Extreme Racer, Initial D Arcade Stage games, hell I got Hydrothunder to work, Split/Second, Ridge Racer, Burnout Revenge THE Best one and only one I will acknowledge lol.
Extra: Fucking Hell with all the buttons these fucking controllers have you could Re-release Twisted Metal series despite being more vehicular combat.
