How to Paint 1/35 Scale Model Figures

- Hi guys,
As promised in the previous figure painting video here is a sort of "how to" figure painting video, although it is really more just a "how I do" figure painting.
Anyway hopefully it fills in some time for you all and perhaps you pick up a tip or two along the way.
Thanks for taking the time to watch, hopefully you are all keeping healthy and not going too stir crazy if your in a lock down of some sort.
Cheers Glen
One of the best figure painting vids I have seen. Thanks for sharing. I learnt a lot.
Thank you Steve, very kind of you to say so, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 👍👍👍
Do not paint the eyes. Look at pictures of people, who are photographed from a distance. Because that is how we look at scale figures. Do you actually see the eyes? Do you see the white and the pupil? No. First, the white of an eye is not white, certainly not when seen from a distance, when the eye is in the shadow. Second, the iris is only about 12 mm in diameter. In scale 1/35 that is 0.34mm. And one third to one half of that is covered by the eyelids. That puts the white even more in the shadow.
Do not paint what you KNOW (and most modelers know it wrong, anyway). Paint what you see, as if you are looking at the real thing, from a distance.
If you can't see it from a distance, don't paint it on a model. It really is that simple. And more realistic.
When modelers paint eyes like you do, it always looks as if those guys have a terrible disease or deformation, or something....! ;-)
But how would they see without eyes 🙄
@@HalidonDioramas ...... it's a solid piece of plastic.......... ;-)
Nice. Personally I would have went lighter on the trousers and a little more gray on the tunic. But I love it.
Thanks Richard, it’s tricky filming as the lighting can make a difference and I even get differences from one camera to another, and none of the pictures ever look exactly the same as it does in person, but I appreciate the feedback mate 👍
You are so right there is no need to get stressed or mad doing this hobby. It's suppose to be about having fun and relaxing. Some people take it way to serious. The figure looks great. You did an awesome job.
Joshua Shikles Thanks Joshua, much appreciated I’m glad you enjoyed it 👍👍👍
Those eyes of the ammunition holder looks like Marty Feldman
LOL, that's gold, I just had a look back at it and you are right, he has some serious eye issues 👍👍👍
@@HalidonDioramas to much Canadian Club and 4 Roses during painting ? 😉😂
My dog chewed my loader when I left them out after priming... 😥 true story.
Dogs are responsible for many things like that, i regularly trotted out the my dog excuse throught school years 😜
I praise your last statement of the video. It is NOT intended to be stressful hobby, and if people are making it stressful, just remove them from your presence lol
But very helpful, thank you!
Thanks J-Man, much appreciated 👍
He turned out nice Glen thanks for the tutorial marra ! Regards Gav.
Thank you Gav, cheers mate 👍
Thank you for this Brother
My pleasure
Good morning, what color did you use for the primer? And what color did you use for the pants?
Greetings from Darwin mate! Love your tutorials, have picked up heaps of great tips! Keep up the great work mate! Well done!
Thank you, much appreciated mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love Darwin, it's a great place 👍👍👍
Love your attitude to this painting, nothing better than a slice of humour. Great video mate .John
Thank you, much appreciated, i think if you cant have fun with your hobby it can't be much of a hobby at all. I still want to do the best that I can but i am not going to top myself if i stuff something up 😀😀😀
@@HalidonDioramas Spot on, too many get wrapped up in it, as you say is a hobby. John.
It all comes down to the proper amount of hydration
Hence my comittment to regular consumption of whisky 👍
I don't know why I watch
videos like this... My models and figures look like shit compared to yours.
Hi toecutter, dont worry mate it's literally just time and practice, the more you do the better you will get, and remember there will always be someone who does it better than you, there are heaps of people that i enjoy watching that are way better than me, but i learn from them and it helps to keep me focused 👍👍👍
Was the figure Primed first? thank you for sharing.
There is an error. The eagle on the arm was carried by the SS.
If the model recreates an SS soldier, the national colors (black, white, and red) cannot be placed on the helmet. In addition, that decal is placed on the right side and not on the left, on the left side was the shield with the eagle.
Everything else is correct.
Best regards.
Yes they are SS figures, depicting a member of the 17th Panzer Grenadier Division, they were supported by a number of other troops forming a composite group which was a mix of SS and Heer. Our man must have picked up the wrong helmet I guess, as for the insignia being on the wrong side you are totally correct, but if was on the other side no one would see it and I wanted the splash of colour.
Thank you very much for your clarification.
A cordial greeting.
Sound like you need a lesson in what constitutes funk music!
I remember this kit from back in the day I for some reason thought a Kübelwagen would tow a flak 88 dont know why maybe just bored but showed my dad when I done it and he laughed and said son why is a Kübelwagen towing a flak 88 and I said what do you mean and he said the Kübelwagen would fall apart and what did you even attach that canon to on your Kübelwagen
Yes it would be an impressive jeep that could tow the 88 😀
An excellent paint job! But one minor nitpick...does the helmet decal seem a bit out of scale? As in too large?
Thanks Barbosa, much appreciated. Yes you are spot on, the helmet decal is the one of the old Tamiya ones and it seems a bit too big, but i wanted the splash of colour visible so decided I could live with it 😋😋😋
@@HalidonDioramas Oh, I understand your reasoning to use it. But as I was watching, it just seemed a bit to large and had to ask. And I do enjoy watching your vids!
I remember this set from Tamiya from the mid 1970s!
Just do your right eye white with a scar through it.
👍👊 Painting figures is really hard.
I done mine in the afria korps version that was a really nice kit to be honest still have it on the shelf hooked up to the boggies with a guy sitting in the seat etc loved the brass shells that came with it! Just done the AFV club pak 40 last week to go with my panzer 1 dio Africa korps, I love the olive brown for the belts n straps never tried mohogany before.
Would you believe my hobby shop had 10/0 and 5/0 paint brushes in so got a set! I can hardly see the tips of the brushes with my own eyes and I have good eyes got them for painting eyes on my figures never thought they went as small! Just had triple 0s before
Cheers, thanks mate 👍
Fairly new to all this and the tutorial was very helpful. Many thanks.
Thanks John glad you got something out of it mate 👍
These figures bring back a lot of modeling memories :)
Yes, the old classics are fun to revisit, brought back many good memories for me as i built and painted it all 👍👍👍
From flak 37 Tamiya
How do determine what color to add to the Main Color shading And High Light s
I am afraid i dont apply much science to it, i might just mix some white in the main colour or i might find a complementary lighter similar colour, it depends on what i have available at the time, if i want it darker then i use black instead of white.
Hate that name Dio haha I get embarrassed just hearing it from the UK lads here
Does it mean something different to what i think it means? 😀
Just to say Glen as I forgot to mention it I am currently doing the Tamiya Paladin which has a lot of stowage, one of the reasons I was attracted to it. Thanks
Very cool!
I thought German leather was black
who knew
CC ist the most importand ingredient for scale modelling. I like the way you paint with acrylics but i still paint faces with oils. Because when you messed up whipe is away with a cotton stick an white spirit, but the drying time is quit nasty. Maybe i should do more with acrylics. First i saw the eyes my thought was, the hunchback of Notre Dame joined the german army…..just kiddin. I like the result and the figure would look great on a diorama. A++ and thumbs up
Thanks De Lan, cant start a project without a good supply of CC in the fridge 😋 I would do oils on larger scales, but a combination of lazy and impatience usually means i stick to the acrylics at 1/35, but you are correct oils are way more forgiving 👍
Great job on this old figure! But, one thing i can really recommend is leaving the helmet off until you finish painting the head/face. It makes it so much easier.
Thanks Odonny, much appreciated. Yes you are 100% correct, I was just being lazy by not painting the helmets seperately and sticking on later 😋
Great video 👍 thanks again.
Thanks Matt, I am glad you enjoyed it 👍
Hello Glen, hope you don't mind me calling you by your first name. I have recently returned to modelling after an absence of 50 years to help with anxiety and I was just in time before the virus locked us down to acquire many kits and paints etc. I have recently made contact with Steve Motram who has been an enormous help mainly with confidence and advice, however I have become bogged down on my first kit through various reasons the first my trepidation of airbrushing which after several poor attempts with cheap tools I've invested after discussing with Steve, in a Harder & Steenbeck Infinity which has allowed me to progress a bit. But here's the latest block and I need to get by or else I'm worried I might turn away and not return regardless of the investment. I am really struggling with the painting and washing of stowage. I know to some it may be a minor point but I just can't get it right and there doesn't seem to be anything out there as a good guide to how best to do it. I know from subscribing to your channel that you are a wonderful painter and was wondering if you could perhaps do a definitive posting on the painting and weathering of stowage...….please. Neil K
Hi Neil, no worries about the name, i usually get called much much worse 😜 First things first, associating with Motty is a bad habit to form, he will fill your head with fantasy about the greatness of English Cricket and teach you how to mispronounce the word "book" 😋 Second thing, the hobby is fun, and in my book you really can't do anything wrong especially if you are happy with the end result. I do heaps of things "wrong" but i like the results so i don't care, it is liberating if you can get into that space and just have fun, don't give up, just keep gluing shit together until you are happy! I am about to start on a 1/35 scale Pershing Tank & diorama, and there will be stowage in that so if you can hang on for a while i will make a special effort to cover how i do the stowage in particular. Thanks for watching and take care mate 👍👍👍
Maybe it's just me but it always seems these figures have noses that are disproportionately large. I don't see that with the resin ones as much. Maybe it's the older casts? Anyway, enough musings for one day. Thanks for the tutorial, Halidon.
Lol, I hadn’t noticed that, but now I have a look at them and I think you are on to something 👃👃👃
thanks for the tips.... just started with figure painting... cant get rid of the cartoon eyes, haha... is usually start with the final color in thin layers right after primer, but i see that you start with a different color as a sort of pre shading... i will try that next time...
Thanks Jeffrey, yes, eyes are tough, its just lots of practice and patience i still have a fair way to go before I could say I am completely happy with my attempts.
Bung Eye.. every figure needs one lol..
40 minutes of rooting around.. too true.
Good looking figures mate, easy to follow technique. Too easy
Thanks Tony, sadly most of my day consists of rooting arround not getting stuff done 😀
Love the way you explain your method, and attitude very helpful for a beginner. Regards Declan london.
Awesome, thank you!
Have been taking my time with my figures, also finally found the type of sponge/cloth you use in your wet pallette. I had to throw my previous container out. The sponge glued to the bottom just didn't work without almost flooding the container. The other issue was I had some paint bleed into it from the parchment paper and after a couple of days of not painting the sponge seemed to be growing mold from the paint. I scrapped that one and made a new one and what a difference!
Nice, there's nothing worse than mould in your wet pallet 😀 Glad you got it sorted out.
Perfect.
But I always think the same:
1. We use an airbrush for the first painting, in order to preserve the details.
2. Then we add 6 layers of pencil painting, including barnish...
Anyway, adding a layer of Canadian Club improves the final result. With or without paintbrush. ... ;)
Thanks Manuel, i tend to stick to the same process for figures, it's reliable if nothing else, as for the Canadians, they are an absolute necessity for the creative process to flow smoothly 😋😋😋
Bestia!!!!
🦍
Thank you for this example of painting figures . Thank you for also showing me how to use Vallego paints. I had a feeling that it needed to be thinned which you did with the wet pallet . Now all I have to do is make a wet pallet. Thank you again.
Thanks Gary, you are so welcome, I'm glad you got something out of it mate 👍
Superb job and very inspirational.
+1 Sub.
How did you get the wire into his foot?
Hi Bob, thanks for the sub! I drill a hole through the base of the foot up into the leg and then use a touch of super glue on the wire to hold it all in place.
@@HalidonDioramas - thank you sir 🙏
I have started watching these posts across most of the model makers and there appears to be a common theme; that despite making them look extremely realistic they all seem to have ‘shine’ which of course is wrong..is there a problem in achieving a Matt finish on uniforms etc?
I think it is probably more a matter of the lighting than a genuine shine, when i look at the figures i have painted in person all of which get a final dull coat as a matter of course they are very flat, espicially under natural light, but under lights for filming they can gt a bit of a gleam on them. I think colour balancing and quality of camera can also have an impact on how they come across on film i imagine.
@@HalidonDioramas Thanks for the explanation...I understand your dilemma but having watched some DAK posts he seems to have achieved the balance. Your models are great but that sheen is just taking off the edge..
" There's a really prominent corodid artery"....aka a huge seam line...lol. I'm painting these figures at the moment, I like your process and your figures look great!
Yes, he is in big danger of having a stroke i think :) Thanks for the feedback Len
Great video, thanks. Just starting out on 1/35 figures so a really useful resource
Yhanks Jon, glad to help! 👍👍👍
You do fine work
Paul Lemieux Thank you Paul 😄
I'm about to paint the same soldiers as pictured.I have quite a few to paint in standard ,winter and African corps. Thank you so much for this video. I have all the paints you state and can't wait to start.
Thanks Roy, they are fun to paint and the detail on the Tamiya figures isn't too bad for their age, have fun mate 👍
Great video i learned alot ito have problems painting hands and faces must be an age thing
Thanks Dave, Very true! and the older i get the harder it becomes 🤓🤓🤓
Is this enamel paint?
No dude, i mostly use acrylic paint and sometimes oils
@@HalidonDioramasOk, I'm just starting to paint model figures.
@@HalidonDioramas Thanks to!
Good morning flower, great job mamba, love it, really great how to. Hope your all OK and staying safe
Good morning nobbie, i thought i might catch you waking up, hopefully you have pants on this time :) All good here, isolating, pretending to work from home and lots of time at the bench 😋😋😋
@@HalidonDioramas now come on you know I wear no pants when talking to you. But it's because you asked me not to. Lol xxxx
Nice. Thank you for this! Nice work broseph.
Thanks Rick, much appreciated 👍
Nicely done Glen i always look forward to your uploads keep them coming my friend
Thanks Greg, much appreciated mate, I hope you are doing well and all is on track 👍
Thanks for the tips , very helpful.
You are very welcome, thank you for watching 👍
How do you stick the wire to the boot, heat it?
I just drill a small hole into the foot the same size as the wire and if it’s a snug fit that’s it, if it’s a bit lose I use some super glue 👍
Cracking video - really enjoyed it, thanks.
Andrew Shaw Hi Andrew, thanks mate, much appreciated 👍👍👍
Cool 👍
Thanks CW 👍
Yes eyes are a pain in the ass!!!!!!
Especially when your actual eyes are crap 😃
Great video and very fine job.
Thanks Kim 👍
Really great "how to" vid. I think a lot of armour guys who can build/paint some of the most awesome looking tanks (etc) shy away from doing figures because they're worried they'll end up looking like mutants.
This is what prevented me from doing figures for a long time, but have gradually come around to making them. I still don't make enough to say that I do a good job, but I think I'm good enough so that the eyes both look in the same direction, which I think is about the only part of a figure you need to get 'right'. Anyway, great vid thanks for sharing.
Thanks cygnusx, much appreciated mate, yes, the eyes are hard, even harder when my real eyes seem not to want to focus at that range 🤓🤓🤓
