Your "Low standards" blows away any figs I've done. Yours are beautiful. And yes, would be very interested in a full video dedicated to Figure painting.
Night shift: think of this as a beginner figuring things out
Me who's been painting figures for 2 years and not able to get half as good results: 😐
lol
I can recommend F.A.Q Figure painting Techniques. This is an insane and nice book about figure painting
@@steveschmidt4406 oh cheers, I've heard from other people it's pretty good as well... I'll see if I can find it
same man
sadly I can’t even do shadowing or small details because my brushes are too big
😐
Well done, they look fantastic!
Woah, I wasn't expecting to see you here Nigel, lol. Do you paint minis?
I'm truly impressed with your figure painting especially since you have only painted four figures so far. Well done.
You are a natural artist and yes, I would love to see you do a dedicated to paint figures as you seem to be a natural at it.
The wash is not cavalry red, it’s the uncle’s heartblood. Because he gave these figures so much love.
The first figure took 4 days?! Whenever I watch your videos I keep having to remind myself it's not all in one sitting!
Hahahaaa, what a dream! The T29 took two weeks to assemble, but doing every video in one sitting would be reeeeally sweet! :)
@@NightShiftScaleModels Hello, fantastic suites of tutorials. You are the one that started my crave for RUclips hobby tutorials, and made me reconnect with my old daddy hobby 🙂 Thank you for that. Now, I have one question here please : Why is the paint bubbling in the airbrush cup at 4:45 ? Thank you very much in advance 🙂
Mr. NightShift, THE BOOTS!!! they came out outstanding. They stand out. Awesome job overall. Kudos to you...
Literally sitting here at work waiting for the video to drop - patience rewarded!
Contrast is your friend. I can get behind that!
Uncle Night Shift: I am not good at miniature painting!
Everyone in the comments: You are great at miniature painting!
Nice job with them, they look really nice and I was about to try that first black then white on highlighted parts before applying thin basecoat, but I think I will go for this approach presented by you. Would really like to see you make some WH40K miniatures, for example new Heavy Intercessors or Aggressors (or go old school with some Terminators), which are basically little walking tanks, and I think their armor can't really chip and rust, but who cares? A more military approach would be interesting to see with all those effects (although I am in love with my reddish brown painted Blood Ravens).
Mah uncle. YES!!! Give us a full, real time video of figure painting pretty please. Even if it will last an hour or two. Doesn't matter. Regards from your northern neighbours.
I'm going to disagree with you about this not being a tutorial as I have to say this is the best tutorial on RUclips for painting small figures...blows all the "pros" away. I am in the process of painting some 1/35 US tank figures (bravo6 brand) from the movie Fury with Brad Pitt. Now I've watched a lot of figure painting tutorials over the past few days (as I've never painted a figure this small) n most just look like they are way over painting, even the "pros"...these figures r sooo small so I figure (haha) less is more right. Again your info is second to none, it's so informative. Your video format is perfect and so clear n crisp. Perfectly shot. I am going to watch this over n over the next few days. Thank you so much for the time n effort you have put into this video...the best tutorial out there.
I’m having real trouble on skin. Just can’t get it right. You’re a real pro Martin. Love your channel!!!
I've said it before, you're figure painting is superb, but judging by your vehicles, it's not surprising. Inspirational work.
So many great ideas,my figures are more like a department store manequins. I love Friday now because of these videos, and your great tips and sense of humor!
Just as a collector of these things, and a fellow modeller: the jacket color of the waving infantryman is way outside the range of the OD7 green introduced with that uniform. Even faded it won't hit those tones. But it's a great example of the many shade variations the earlier uniforms in OD2 could come out of the manufacturers and/or fade to.
Stellar work as always though, I know figs aren't easy. Dad made me cut my teeth on them early so I wouldn't have reservations about doing them later after nothing but AFV's, light vehicles, and planes.
Here are some awesome links to items about US Uniforms (and equipment) by one of the vendors we get reproductions from (working from his extensive originals collection). He also worked around 2015 with research done by members of the 100th Infantry Division Reenactment group on the US East Coast who, through their research (at the US Quartermaster's Corps Museum, and other archives) got access to spec documents and original preserved swatches that completely turned the arguments of what color the M1941 Field Jacket was on it's head as we learned they were what was termed "Olive Drab #2" (OD2) rather than the previously thought "khaki" or other OD shades (there truly were 50 Shades of Olive Drab between vehicle paints, equipment paints, and uniform/equipment dyes), of course between variation in manufacturer's processes and fading and staining from use the colors will shift considerably (and you'll see many examples items in a entire palette of shades of the "same color"). Things for your research collection!
Part of the research findings into the M1941 Field Jacket's true specified color are given here:
www.90thidpg.us/Equipment/Reviews/ATFM412015/index.html
His argument way back when against "everything US was khaki," except the US Army did use a khaki color, which is what we think of when someone says "khaki."

HBT Uniforms (like the coveralls the tank crewman is wearing), nominally the greener OD7, but also a huge shade variation.

Happy painting! Can't wait to see more!
Thank you, Uncle Night Shift! Because of these figure vids u made, I made one mine. My first choco chip fig for M1A1.
Excellent work, sir! A couple of observations from someone who knows nothing about painting figures, but who is fairly well versed in weaponry and field gear. The M1 Garand rifle which your GI is carrying, believe it or not, generally had a bit of shine on the wood stock. It is not the flat, oiled wood you'd see for instance on a German Mauser. Also, the metal parts, including the barrel, gas tube, receiver and butt-plate, are almost always worn to virtually bare metal (with subtle darkening on details) rather than the factory blackening or bluing. On the clothing, I'd consider adding some subtle highlighting to suggest wear areas at the knees, upper thighs and elbows too (take a look at your own jeans and you'll get the idea).
As always, your work continues to amaze me, and thanks so much for sharing.
Steve
I always eat lunch a little faster on Friday! I finished the flesh tones on three of my figures, but I can’t wait to try some of these tricks on their uniforms, amazing job! I hope you feel better soon!
Using a airbrush to paint minis WOW GREAT JOB. You do good work, first time or second time. Your a natural
I had to subscribe because you are really easy to listen to, are hugely talented and have a healthy streak of humour in your videos. I reckon if I can't learn by watching you paint in a smaller scale than I could ever dream of attempting, I never will lol!
Well, you did a great work! Your airbrush skill are finally very useful!
Just two tips.
1- you can use the finally red wash even on the lower lip.
2- maybe not in this scale but keep in mind that soldier can't shave themselves every day. Maybe a little umber wash on the cheeks an the chin could help.
3- eyebrows, ther aren't under chemio therapy 🤞
4- round objects like button, rank and pockets cannot have the same shadow all around. Try to keep the upper shadow more thin as possible.
Ok they are 4 tips but that's because I really like your work!
i think ALL of them look fantastic! PLEASE keep the vids coming... i'm learning a great deal
Now I am really proud to have been one of persons who pushes you to do figures. They looks very good.
Excellent, I've a lot to learn😆 trouble now as I'm getting older I'm shaking more. I've had to train my breathing by holding my breath, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
Amazing...figuratively speaking! 😄 You inspire me to add more figures because they really bring a model to life.
Your first figure is better than my most recent one and I’ve been figure painting for about 2 months
Fabulous work, as a always. You are far too humble.
A technical note: The infantryman's rank insignia (if he's a technical sergeant, now known as a sergeant first class) should be three chevrons and two rockers, if a staff sergeant, three chevrons and one rocker. There is no device of any kind in the space between the bottom chevron and the top rocker. The patch on the figure appears to have something in that space that should be blank and it makes it look like there are four chevrons. (It also makes it look like there are two rockers, but one or two rockers are OK).
Also, you've indicated you're not through with them, but they will need dirt, grease stains, water stains, and other marks on their clothing and also dirt on their hands and faces. Soldiers get into a remarkable number of substances that make them dirty in nearly uncountable ways. (Ask me how I know.)
But I must repeat: fabulous work. You are a genius. With more experience I will be surprised that your figures aren't walking around and chatting with each other.
Awesome, phenomenal work my friend....keep them figures coming, just wait until you try those SS camouflage uniforms! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻🥇🏆🤜🏻🤛🏻
The Abraham Lincoln quote was his most famous words
It's my favorite quote of his, I probably say it at least once a week!
"Four score and many prime coats ago..."
Another one of his lesser known quotes
;)
He was also the first one to comment "Let's gooo" under a random RUclips video
You don't give yourself enough credit. Those figures turned out amazing. As good as any I've seen on RUclips. 🇺🇸
Wow...impressive for anyone much less someone that has only done it twice. Figures are my Achilles heel. I have learned so much from Uncle Night Shift!
Yes please, more figures.
Love your work fella, absolutely outstanding levels of detail.
Hi Marti , that wzs a excellent tutorial, well done, I hope you are keeping well during these crazy times, best regards from Australia.
Amazing work! Most of people don't put so much attention to painting figures and you show that just spending more time allows to get very neat results even on the first figure! This just require selecting a good technique and patience.
Excellent job! Better than anything I've done, mainly fighter pilots. The only savining Grace, skin is usually completely covered LOL!!
My local hobby shop finally got tamiya putty and tamiya two part epoxy putty in stock after weeks of me waiting for it to arrvive! So now I'm going to try and do some real scale modeling
I came over from Maniac's RUclips page. I am very please that I came. Just Subed up and will watch. Great video
Another fantastic tutorial/video.
I know I’m one of your patreons and I watched this already a week ago.
But I felt I needed to just comment on this video again. Superb job Mah friend👍
Wow for only painting a couple of figures. You sir are very good. Nicely done. Hope you get better. Be safe
I'm glad you've finally committed to figures they are the only thing missing from your builds and they look so good!
Genius and patience. Congratulations
You are one of the world's most talented artists! Yes, please do more figure videos, if my figures looked that good I would extremely proud and pleased.
The final result for these figures is brilliant, and are far from sub-par as you suggest! Your skills are amazing, no matter the subject you choose.
I am not very successful with figure painting, but you have inspired me to persevere, and I will try some of the methods you share here.
Yes! to a full tutorial on figure painting please Uncle. I am sure I am not the only one who would benefit from your techniques.
Greetings from Australia!
one word: FANTASTIC!!! i 've got about 300 figures to paint and i like you to paint them :)
Actually,,, I'm Impressed With Your Work Uncle Night Shift, Turned Out Quite Nicely in My Opinion. Thanks For Sharing n Have a Blessed Week.
P.S. Prayers going Your Way For Better Health.
One last detail you could add to GI Joe... silver chipping along the brim of the helmet. Not much, but a little. US M1 type helmets had a stainless steel rim pressed on and it was prone to chipping.
Great figs "mah friend!"
Turned out great, figures it's Uncle after all.
Color me impressed, and don't you brush off this praise!
Tanks for another great video.
All puns intended!
Yes yes yes!! A live stream video of painting a figure
The Mr PRIMER surfacer 1000 is the primer made for resin/metal.
It's one of the most powerful primers on the market. Not to be confused with the regular Mr surfacer. It only comes in 1000.
Just beginning figures here. Very Informative and Cool. Thanx Again...
After years of not building a model, and having modest skills. Watching your videos has giving me the confidence to branch out, outside of my "straight from factory" look. I know when in doubt, all I have to do is search your library. Don't get me wrong, my models look like a ten year old's, compared to yours..but I feel like we have a good teacher thanks to uncle Night Shift.
How could anyone dislike this kit is superb!
Absolutely amazing! I can only hope to reach this LVL.
Great job! Might I suggest you watch how the tabletop minature gamers paint minis. They've got techniques that are very helpful to model makers. Watching and practicing on minis has upped my game and have new skills to try on gunpla
Even though you're a "beginner" when it comes to figures, this totally works as an introduction to figure painting. Your previous modeling experience pays off, and you've done a fantastic job. can't wait to see where this journey leads for you. (I'm a miniature figure painter who cannot paint a quality tank :D"
also, 4 hours? I know guys who spend a week or more on each figure. Your'e doing great. keep it up.
WOW !!! Yep, you nailed it on these figures... You actually have given me confidence enough to attempt this myself... Thank you...
Well Mr, your work is amazing and I mean it. Even these figures are awesome. I enjoy your videos, your chipping methods, always inspiring me and I already learn a lot from 'em. I just started scale modeling so these vids are really something I can use to improve myself and last but not least they are funny and entertaining somehow I feel relaxed while I watching them 😊. So I just wanna thank, and please keep up the good work! 👊
Love all your tutorials, with each one I learn so much more and gain many ideas. You're very personable and bring fun into the hobby. You're very humble and not afraid to criticize yourself in a comical way which , in my opinion, entices many to look forward to your future videos. At least I sure do.
I think you’re too hard on yourself, those figures look totally awesome! Good job!!!
Your first figure was great, but these three guys are next level much more sharp and crisp! well done my friend
Someone who is obviously very talented with models doing something outside their wheelhouse like figures is really interesting. Plus the final result is great.
Especially since I end up watching a bunch of very skilled 40k mini painters on here, so it's neat to see the different methods and approaches. Now to somehow get Night Shift to do a Baneblade in his style and I'll die happy. :P
Also re: white for eyes. If you look at say a photo of a group of people realistically the amount of the whites of their eyes you see is incredibly minimal and usually gets blended down due to the surrounding colours/details. Whites for eyes can work on models but honestly I've seen 'quality' models where the whites (though technically very well done) still just made the eyes look cartoony and out of place.
WOW! amazing job for the 2nd 3rd and 4th try! excellent!
Well done! My only recommendation would've been to swap the colors of the jackets. The GI is wearing what's called a M43 jacket which was a very dark green, and the color you ended up choosing would've been the perfect color for the two m41 field jackets on the tankers.
Thought the same. The colors varied of course but knowing what was worn at different times of the war really helps. That with knowing the colors of actual items. Collectors have a bit of an advantage there.
I love how he talks about how subpar he is while casually painting with a level of skill I will never achieve.
It's the video close-ups and 4K resolution that always bursts my bubble lol. IRL I feel like damn, this is actually looking pretty nice! Then I look at the footage and get served a hard reality check lol.
You might try a fantasy figure painting technique. Instead of priming in flat light grey, prime in black from below and light grey or off-white from above. When you apply your highlights and lowlights the shading will jump out immediately.
Amazing, as always!
For the “little mistakes” you talk of, if you need to point those out to the viewers for them to see the mistakes, then you shouldn't worry to much about it. Even professional artist make little mistakes all the time, but they just acknowledge that most people will never see them and the rare ones that do probably won't be mad about it. It's part of the art.
It's always a good time watching you build and paint models!
Beautiful, man! Your videos are invaluable, and I appreciate you keeping them coming.
Very good tutorial (or if you prefer, learning video) that covers a lot of excellent painting points and techniques…and the 3 figures turned our remarkably well! Thanks for you time and effort, I really enjoyed your video.
20:00 Livestream?!?!? YES. Seeing the process in real-time will be very cool.
They look great Martin. I'd love to see more on figures. (They're a huge weak point for me) Keep up the amazing work!
I would definitely say you are far better than a beginner. Looks great and thanks for the video
I feel like Uncle Nightshift could make anything look easy.
Hi modkits
I would happily tune in for a live session. Very nice work.
Great Job Uncle Night Shift!
One thing to note about US Infantry weapons... the phosphate coating on the metal isn't black. It's a shade of of greenish-black. Modern weapons tend to be black-er, but still have a slight green tint. I have handled several WWII era weapons that were dark OD green, like a new uniform, just... darker.
These minis are great Martin. Also, streams paintings things would be nice
They turned out pretty good Martin. Using pre-shading is key to finding your shadows and highlights and makes figure painting sooooo much easier. I think that the coloured masking putty you're using is the same as Silly Putty which I use with great success as well. Enjoyed the video!
Thanks Scott, much appreciated! The silly putty thingy is excellent, I haven't found much use for it on armor models but it works so damn well for figures!
@@NightShiftScaleModels Yes, it’s great stuff! Silly putty work great for hard edge camo on vehicles as well, you just need to avoid putting it over delicate etch parts.
The tank looks awesome! The figures look awesome! Can't wait until next week to see the diorama! It's going to be awesome! :)
Three awesomes in one comment... That's not awesome. lol
Looks great! For the diarama, I suggest placing something into Joe’s hand - a rolled map, a flat satchel, etc. the wave being the point of focus feels a bit bland. Awesome paintwork, loved it 👍
Personally I dont think you give yourself enough credit over the quality of your figures. I think they are superb
A whole lot better than I've been able to accomplish. When I paint a figure I try to imagine him in the real world. For example: is he new to the environment, with brand new uniform. Has he been wearing his uniform for some time, faded, dirty, tears, etc? I also believe the rank insignia is incorrect for the tankers. The commander would probably be a staff sergeant E6 The rest of the crew would be E3 or E2 unless they were new replacements, then E1. Check out the crew of "Fury." A very well-done video.
That was quite helpful, especially the skin/face portions.
Excellent! For only the second time painting figures? Amazing job man. Looks like a multi decade pro painted them.
YES you should do a longer, more detailed figure video. 👍👍
You do a great job for a guy who says he has very little experience!!!😎😎😎
4 days on one figure!?!?? No wonder my guys look crap!!! Love your work!
They look so life like! Well done!
I have consistently avoided figures in the past after a couple of very poor attempts, however after pondering the process my thought mirror exactly your technique of using the base colour with shades to show the highlights and lowlights so I will give it a go. I have a fairly basic figure with my Tamiya Sherman so thanks for the inspiration.
Please yes more figure painting! Your video's great amd easier to follow than other's and no joke I think thses are some of the best I've seen! That tanker you wanted to redo the jacket I think is the best one too! Just something about it I think that one! I've bought a good few from scale 75 war front resin figures! I've got a cool rommel he was hard to get! There like old power rangers trying to get a certain one lol so when rommel came in I snapped up 2!
For not painting figures before you did really good and they turned out nice
This is excellent ! Just a tip: check out Shep Paine's method of "cutting off" hands from arms method. Shep used to cut off the hands and really "wrap" fingers and hands around things being held(in this case the figurine holding the gun). After you "wrap" the fingers around the object you fit them back to the arms, you can always use putty to fit any gaps! it really looks very realistic. Hard to believe this is "beginner's" work :) !
Dear Martin, Brilliant work!
You can be proud of your figures !!! They are very convincing.
OMG they look awesome. Please make a detail video about figure painting.
You are a fantastic brush painter.
I would appreciate another figure painting vid... related to the different paints and manufacturers. Cheers
Hello Martin, is just a tip,I recommend you for the dark wash of the face-faced Game Color Fleshtone Shadow 73.204,it makes soft transitions and stays well in the deep. is just a tip. Greetings
Great video! I love how much life is added to a vehicle model with even just a single figure. Will try some of this on my next tank commander. One option for uniform patches and ranks are decals from companies like Echelon or Alliance Model Works.
Well, now I know I’m not that crazy when it takes me days to compleat a figure. Thanks
Nice one , next when u will paint figure try tu glaze shadows ( brush pass ) in direction toward to darkest place ( then u will get a smoother transition)
