The 1VD-FTV engine has been fitted to many vehicles based on the Toyota Landcruiser platform and is a popular choice with the public. There are a couple of different variants depending on the model, but there seems to be a common trap when changing the cartridge oil filter which can catch out the unwary technician and destroy the engine soon after a service.
Like most other modern engines, the oil flow through the 1VD-FTV oil filter element is from the outside in. Both the plastic and alloy variants of the oil filter assembly end caps have a centre reinforcement tube fitted.
The 1VD-FTV is a 4.5L V8 turbo common rail diesel engine, first released in the Toyota 200 Series LandCruiser and the Lexus LX models with a twin turbo variant, while a single turbo variant is used in the 70 Series LandCruiser.
It seems that after years of service the reinforcement tube in the end cap can become loose, as the tube is only crimped in position. When the end cap is removed for a filter change, and the technician gives the element a bit of a twist and wiggle to remove the old cartridge, the reinforcement tube has been known to come out of the cap, and then be thrown away with the old filter cartridge.
Industry feedback we have received claims that after a couple of hundred kilometres, without a reinforcement tube, the oil pressure will eventually collapse the new oil filter element and reduce the oil flow to the engine. This commonly results in catastrophic engine failure.
Cartridge oil filters are becoming more common across a wide range of manufacturers, and similar installation errors could be possible on current and future engines. As a result an understanding their operation, and the components they require to work reliably, could reduce the chance of avoidable engine and business reputation damage after a service.
