Would like to see it integrated into the throttle somehow making it easier for him to apply smoothly
or mounted on a servo so it always pushed foward
This could be done easily with logic switches in opentx
I used a side slider on a horus x10s controller to do just that :)
Sup matt!!! Didn't knew u were into miniquads!
You can add it to the motor mixer for forward pitch.
Getting Shaun (lets fly RC) to join the rotor riot team was a good decision. His ideas for videos have def boosted entertainment for rotor riot a lot. It’s fun to watch these hehe
Man, seeing how that quad sheared right through a metal post makes you realize that shit is dangerous.
That’s why we have insurance with the AMA. lol
Well if that quad weights about 400g and is going at around 40m/s (about 145km/h or 90mph) Gives a kinetic energy of 320j that's about the same energy as a .38 Special or about half the of the maximum measured energy of a horse kick.
The torque is throwing the entire thing off. You should get some counter rotating 3' motors and use that as the "turbo".
Also my thoughts!
I think this could help. double-turbo is better than single-turbo ;)
Get some of those crazy Nazgul 3061 props for it.
making sure the thrust vector goes through the cg would probably help a lot
All alternatively you could have the prop mounted in such a way that its force goes through the center of the drone, then you wouldn't have the offbalance at least
If you use two counter rotating motors you could counteract the roll torque moment the one motor causes. As far as the pitch moment created, the mount for the motor could be lowered to be more in line with the center of mass, but that might be a little more impractical. Loving all the fun ideas!
3:56 "Mad props" to the editor for the slick cut
Mad props cuz of the quad has an extra prop?
that counts as a slick cut?
It is amazing how much damage it did to the rebar while all the carbon on the drone is intact.
Its a aluminum pipe and a thin walled as well...
Still deadly but definitely not rebar!
Rather than flip on switch, make a pedal switch. The best will be with potentiometer, just like accelerator pedal.
Another one, lol. I just wrote this then scroll down and see a couple of you beat me to it ✌️
Yeah like a Wah pedal or a sewing machine. You use your feet when you fly a real helicopter, so this is actually a spot on idea. Yours was too BergerMan ; )
Good idea! You can buy guitar volume or expression pedals for cheap.
Or use switch and integrating with throttle
Isn't implementing it to the Throttle the better way?
There's so much pure joy in this. Thanks for a truly fun video.
I wss just about to comment the same. Awesome episode! 😀
I dont know if you guys are gonna read this, but I just wanted to say that I love this direction that rotor riot is going!!! I think the focus on building, wild experimentation, and exploring the niches of what can be done for drones is far more entertaining and captivating than going over various freestyle tricks, compilations, or product reviews. The amount of potential behind what can be done with spinning motors excites me and I hope that you guys bring it further in this direction!!!
This is *amazing*. This is my favourite type of video - a clever idea that basically anyone could do if they had that idea, but that results in much laughter among all of them. Reminds me of the "third person footrace" one.
Sounds and looks like vanny is finally hitting puberty🤣🤣
He’s even engaged!

Vanny n drew got engaged?

Excellent idea ! One suggestion: You can tune the 5th motor to turn on at above 50% throttle. That way it will work more efficiently and help increase the speed more at straight line / higher throttle
That was freaking crazily insane!!! Good job Sean for built the turbo with 5th motor for turbo speed! That was super fun to watch and I can't believed this bike could bent and cracked the pipe of the gate!! 😯😯 I was shocked and it only got broken stack! The frame is truly strongest! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Good job for caption over for flying good job! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 And thanks drew for taking videotaped! 👊🏼 Good job guys! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yes! Please revisit this in the future!
Wanna see how to set up the servo channel output to do this yourself? ruclips.net/video/jiD6aC0l1VQ/видео.html&ab_channel=JoshuaBardwell
I think part of the problem is that the motor isn't pushing through the CG of the quad, so it is imparting a net-torque which the motors must overcome.
Totally agree... And maybe a way to overcome the abruptness of the turbo turning on and off would be to somehow just directly take throttle input to the "auxiliary" engine from the Pitch angle, which would enable hovering and would not require pilot to activate anything during the course... I definitely like this build ALOT !
Agreed. They may as well keep rotating that motor past the cam angle until its the same as the other 4 and just have 5 motors' thrust, unbalanced though
Should of flown Bardwell out for this one! His name is fpvknowitall for a reason!
Joshua Bardwell could the switch channel be mixed with the throttle to come on during mid and full instead of having a separate switch? Or will it be too difficult to fly normally?
Yea first thing I was thinking. It's high up. Trying to flip the drone.
What about placing a momentary switch under the remote, hold down with ring finger to boost, might be easier than toggling a 3 way switch. Had a smile on my face the whole time, good fun video gents.
Now put wings on it and get rid of the vertical lift moto.... wait
best comment 2020.
HAPPY NEWYEARS!
hoping to implement your vtol controller someday....fingers crossed

A foot pedal switch would make it a lot more easier to operate than a flick of a switch great stuff. Can’t believe that rebar 😂
Just wrote that then scroll down and see you beat me to it by 10hrs, lol ✌️
that isn't rebar. It is just a lightweight aluminum bar. You can bend it with your knee especially at that length. No way you can bend rebar (the type of bar that goes in concrete).
@@fprintf yeah I was laughing when Vanny said that too. That's like the cheapest most brittle aluminum tubing you can get 😂😂😂
Drew is hyping DJI like analog didn't have BF OSD before HD was even a thing.
"With the dji system i can change my rates right in the goggle."
Pretty sure that's been doable for years before dji digital system. And i would love to see van rock up at a race sporting the dji goggles for a "nicer experience" haha
Sure, but you can't physically use your analog goggle to make changes, I think that is what he was pointing out.
Gotta sell those glorious HD fpv sets to stay in business... Lol
@@stinkerton but can you change the rates from inside the analogue goggles on the screens without a computer?
He even stated you would normally need to hook it up to a laptop if your out in the field. Which is just not true!
You've got to remember. RR don't aim there content at us, the guys that have been in the hobby for quite some time. Especially where shilling is concerned thats for sure. We aren't their main audience.
"I just need to get used to it" MAX "turbo boost" yea ok 12:22 Breaks rebar at MACH6 !!! haha Nice Full send Vanny
should have used a double motor on the back/bottom to even out the rotational force, it might have made it a smoother flight.
Omg yeah wasn't thinking about that and that would be insane
Could even have crazy yaw authority using thrust differential maybe help with turning
Edit: Should have each one turning to the outside so the torque difference when using thrust difference actually helps with the turn too
Be even crazier if you could get it going fast enough forward to auto rotate
the quad drone gyro
Put 4 motors on the back the battery in the front for balance get some up and down to have reversible props on all 8 motors need a cyborg to fly it 😆
Have fun tuning that thing 😆🥴😖
Prop hangs and stands inverted craziness
The excitement was so real he was shaking at 28 seconds in🤣🤣🔥🔥
Yeah. That was so weird. I didn’t even know I was doing that until I watched the video. Lol 😂
Love the new fun direction of the channel
that made me laugh with tears..thank you guys I needed it
Made it into a quad-gyrocopter...
Yo!! Y'all are crazy nice. I'm a RC car guy. I use servo mixing to add brake when I turn the wheel of my RC truck. Mix the turbo motor with the throttle stick position. Use the switch to toggle the turbo on or off. More throttle, more turbo... Less throttle, less turbo for the turns. Wire the fifth motor in series with the others for thrust. The current stays the same. That should do it. Hope that helps and Good luck!
If this ever becomes a thing, it needs to be called the Sulu, because "Mr. Sulu, go to warp."
i fear no man, but that thing... that thing, it scares me...
Lol
That was fuuuun!!!!!! Holy crap !!!!
Wow, you can really feel the power punching the quad the moment you hit the afterburner. We need a racing leage for this!
Awesome video guys. Damn the metal pole though lol. It took a good beating.
The hysterical laughing from all of them was hilarious, I was on the floor laughing. Priceless😄😂😂
Holy hell these things have gotten way better, and from the looks of it the video and response cuz he's damn good.
You need a copilot flipping the turbo switch!! That was awesome. 😂
Foot pedal.
Right now I'm on no cash, but i dream push method 8 years ago. But you have done it all. It work !
I liked it.
Rotor Riot meets Flite Test type video. This was my absolute favorite video thus far!
On 30th December 2020 at 10:00 AM, I had the idea to add a propeller at the back of a quad, at 8:00 PM, I discovered this video, and it works pretty well ! Well done guys, and good position of the push vector going through the gravity center. Next improvement can be to put 2 propellers running in opposite (cw ccw) to avoid torque effect and power consumption to compensate it.
Vanover flying that fast LINE OF SIGHT was way more impressive than the drone. mad respect
The bellend off screen shouting about not forgetting the bell 🤣🤣 priceless
This is hands down my favorite video of this series 🤣 it's absurd and it works and the instant loss of control is hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
At 61 this year, I can add pro drone pilot to the list of things I'm too old and slow for.
I like Sean’s design. The adjustability of the motor mount is cool. Maybe put the booster on a knob instead of a switch for more control. Good stuff
Also after giving it some thought you could solve the counterrotating problem by replacing the boost motor with a rocket engine. Something with like a 6 second burn would be interesting
Shawn is the man. lol and Vanny's pretty cool too...also, he can fly well.
I felt the same way the first time I used "Turtle Mode". 😂
Awesome👏👏👏 you guys have so much fun, it’s contagious 😷 lol. cheers
map the back motor in relation to turning so when you do slight changes in turning the back motor spins a little slower, and if you turn really hard, the back motor stops.
Nice advertising for the DJI FPV system while you can't buy the goggles anywhere :')
lol the entire thing was an ad read
Cant blame content creators from trying to make money 🤷🏼♂️ it’s literally their job 😂

@@metazootet1492 try to order it. It’s sold out.
That was great, love seeing these things,
that gate took a hell of a punch
Hey, guys. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I remember on Taranis it is something like concept of "inputs" and "outputs" and you can direct your inputs into outputs in any way including fancy formulas. So what can be done about the fifth motor is: you take "throttle" input and direct it to "5th motor output" with -0.5 (so it kicks in only when throttle reach 50%) and x2 multiplier afterwards (so it can reach full throttle as well).
You need to make sure that the thrust vector of the 5th motor points through the centre of mass. Then it won't induce any torque on the quad that would need to be compensated.
The turbo adds thrust, and massive rotational torque. Pretty cool
Great video guys! Loved it! (I know this is a new comment on an older video, but...) You might try finding the Center of Gravity of the drone, then align the thrust vector of the Turbo motor through the CG at the angle of the camera. This most likely would require a redesign of the Turbo Motor mounting brackets.
Rebuild it and run it again, that was a blast
Nice, guys. Thanks for the episode. ✌🏻❤️🍺
"I worked with Dre-rotor riot" that slip lol
This was great! Really enjoyed it. Why is Vanover's voice so different??
Amazing work!
🤔 If it's a distraction to flip the 5th motor on and off, how about mapping the enabling of the motor to a switch but mapping the power output of the fifth motor to the combined stick inputs?
- If you're zero'd out on pitch and punch the throttle, your 5th motor power is null.
- If you pitch forward and punch throttle, the pitch/throttle combination pushes the 5th motor power curve to max.
- As you dial in roll and yaw, even with pitch and throttle high, the 5th motor is dialed back down.
This kind of setup should allow you to control the pusher motor output variably, maintaining control in curves, having max boost in straights and being able to hover in a stable manner. Would be a bit of tuning but once you get the curves mapped out, this should be pretty cool! :D
Great video! It was awesome seeing you guys have so much fun!
Hahaha this was so cool! I love how it had you guys cracking up laughing 😂 And "Vanover the fastest real drone pilot in the world. Just dont give him a SIM" was perfect! Lol
how is this my introduction to drone racing, always heard about it, never seen videos until now, what a way to discover
The extra motor is to far in the back, the thrust is now above the center of mass. if you position the extra motor more in the middle I think it would be more stable. And hell yeah would I like to see another episode
The first design, I had it in the center of mass. “Someone” thought it would look cooler in the rear. Lol 😂
Uhm. If i may ask, do you mean more in the middle along the length, or along the height of the Quad?
(But great thinking :D)
@@geminitheavali5018 yes, thanks
@@LetsFlyRC wow, you know my opinion, but such a cool idea to be faster
As long as the thrust points towards the center of mass, the force itself shouldn't impact the quadcopter, except on turns. The rear prop causes a torque as well as a directional force, which messes with the flight controller stability. The quad is also torqued while the motor is spinning.
Cool. In addition to the center of gravity / center of thrust that Joshua wrote, don't forget it has a significant reaction torque too. It constantly tries to twist the quad along the turbo rotor axis when on. This effect might be especially strong when turning on/off turbo mode (when the turbo prop changes rpm fast). The FC might have hard times with this, and could degrade handling in general. Try using two counter rotating turbo propellers to cancel-out this effect. :)
Dude what!!! You hit that bar so hard wow I can't believe nothing really broke on that
Watching Vanover fly is just a whole different fpv experience
I'm convinced he actually flies with his goggles unpowered.
Integrated throttle is a great idea and maybe have the pusher motor gimbal left and right with yaw inputs to help smooth out cornering.
Bind the turbo motor with throttle position, and activate it with a second kill (arm) switch, that way you can fly with stand then activate the turbo motor mid fly, and control the output of the turbo with the analog position of the throttle!
WTF ...
Keep up the mad scientist projects🤣🤣
Love it👊👊😎🍻🍻🍻🍻
I build one of these years ago on a ZMR 250 frame. We were still using CPPM back then so I had the thruster wired directly to a spare channel bypassing the FC completely and has it controlled by a slider. Flew really well and very flat as there was no angle on the motor.
Yep, same way I setup my Foxtech Screamer pentacopter. Throttle for the rear motor directly off the Rx. They just didn't have that option using the DJI gear for control.
Counter rotating props x 3d 32-bit esc, BF mapping to throttle and turns(momentum[s]) and a toggle to boot. Live leveling the mount via servo.
That was so cool ! Maybe you could program it so the turbo is automatically set when a certain throttle position is reached :)
I just wanted to add, that was amazing, but you need to add one of those turning knobs on the throttle stick to control the turbo motor. this should be revisited. also, it was flying on 0 throttle cause of the autogiro effect. that is when a spinning propeller horizontally is pushed forward and the air resistance makes it spin and act like a wing.
Could Not Stop Laughing.....that rocked
Man, man, how fast that goes. I've never seen this before. But it also happens quickly when things go wrong.
With an acceleration sensor you could measure the acceleration, and then adjust the angle of the turbo propeller with an extra servo.
I hope that with this idea I can contribute to the solution of the problem.
Keep it up.
Big kids having fun!!👊💪👊💪
You guys were having such a riot with this thing
That was fun to watch.
Maybe in youre next build you can make a footswitch/trottle to control the turbo.
Keep up the good work guys. 👍🏻
Have you not seen the Foxtech screamer 250 like 3 years ago?
Omg thank you! I was trying so hard to remember one of the old quads that did this and was going crazy
Like 5 years ago Foxtech screamer. I was pretty keen to get one for a short while.
Ah 4 gears ago according to this m.ruclips.net/video/V6QMPeXKZuI/видео.html
@@cheshirerc wow that long 😳
Try the "Mixing" in your settings of your FRSKY controller. It allows you to mix one channel with another channel. For example you could set the 5th motor to come on at its mid throttle when the throttle stick is at 75% up and then when the stick is at full deflection you can set the mix to give full throttle to the 5th motor. In theory when Alex hits the straight away and goes full throttle so will the 5th motor. So he doesn't have to deal with a switch.
that was soooo funny i was laughing the whole way though nice job boys
You should hook it up in parallel with one of the rear motor controller outputs, and use a transistor so that it only kicks on past a certain throttle level. That way, the fan will kick on for the straight aways and the speed will scale with the rear motor, then it will kick off when you let off the throttle. Also, add a servo to the fan and a gyro sensor, and make the angle of the fan match the angle of the quad. This whole thing can be done with no coding if you're electrically savvy, or you can power a tiny arduino and code it yourself. It would be crazy simple to code and wire correctly
The booster would need to have a yaw and pitch function for it to work, and even then, the momentum would be carried a lot further making it harder to do sharp turns and flips. Boosters are good for moving straight. That’s about it.
That thing was INSANE!!!!!! Very cool!
I’ve never seen a professional crash so fast in all of RUclips
I don't think you can do anything 'wrong' per se when flying a turbo quad for the first time, especially considering the only casualty was a steel bar and not someone ending up in the hospital :) That was incredible, nice flying and amazing build!
Flying on gyro-props dude! That's amazing! Shawn acing it as always!
2 x 3-4" motors on the back would be sweet Hexa-rocket
One of the best funny videos of rotor riot. Hahah😂😂 nice by the way.
I think you should try to integrate a foot pedal for boost so you can control it separately 😄 crazy video guys! Loved it
Might be interesting if the boost would kick in automatically only when roll and yaw axes are relatively centered and throttle is >~50%. This way it only kicks in on straight aways. It’d have to be implemented in the FC software. Honestly though, weird idea from a flight perspective. You’d probably do better just making it an 8motor quad
You can do that pretty easily with the "logical switches" in opentx. unfortunately only dependent on stick position and not acc/gyro data
@@acy48 good point. maybe if it only kicked in at say ~>75% throttle, then it shouldn't kick in during turns (one would hope lol), only during fast straight aways. maybe even >90% is where it might work.
I had the exact same thought 😊 yes probably best if solved in FC, but maybe a quicker fix is to program it in opentx on the transmitter? So that the aux channel is only engaged when the sticks are within chosen parameters. Funny experiment, and fun to see so many people chiming in with improvement suggestions. At least they manage to make the content engaging, if not practical 🤓
Fun video! :D
but.....
search "screamer 250" :)
If possible tie the throttle of the boost to your pitch forward position + throttle position or do a momentary switch on your radio instead. I hope you revisit this that was a lot of fun to watch.
I Wanna see dual rear turbos integrated to the throttle BUT USE 2 blade folding pusher props to get rid of the air drag. also on the lower end for sorta turbo breaking. SICK BUILD AND VID AS ALWAYS
One way to improve it would be to put it completely below the drone, and activate it proportionally the the drone angle and throttle (for example a mixer channel on the radio that use telemetry for the drone orientation.
That way you get a boost in speed when you tilt forward the drone
I am new to drones but I think this Idea might help ...Integrate the turbo with a sideways swing mechanism to kind of boost it in the opposite direction of turn and the back end will turn pretty better and also don't need to flip the switches .Just an idea
You are onto something. A new category; drag droning or drone dragging. I wonder if that motor could be mixed in with the throttle somehow (and maybe a 6-in-1 ESC). For the Raider counter rotating "helicopter", I always thought the rear pusher prop was unnecessary and overly complex, but it is essential to get the speed/range.
Definitely put the turbo mixed with the throttle. No switch out pedal. And two vertical turbo motors with vectoring would be awesome!
Two smaller motors counter rotating on the turbo will make sure the quad doesn't always lean on one side when the turbo is on. Would be fun to try.
