Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. Back in the '90's when I was into paintball, the guns would freeze up when using CO2 unless you added an expansion chamber inline between the gun and the cartridge. The expansion chamber is basically just a thick aluminum tube to let the CO2 expand and absorb the temperature shock before it gets into the moving parts, sort of like a heatsink I suppose.
I was thinking about an expansion chamber to reduce freezing as well. Wondering too if the different materials (aluminum/print matrix) are an issue due to thermal contraction rate.
the real problem here was solved by tom stanton a while back: CO2 is too dense, and requires materials that are not weight efficient to keep it pressurized. regular air compresses better than CO2, and can be contained in a plastic bottle, much lighter than the aluminum CO2 cartridges. the net effect is more power for less weight. the downside is volume is increased.

The statement at 15:18 is known as the "pendulum fallacy". You can't stabilize a hover by placing a mass under the lifting rotor, because as the plane tilts the vector of thrust tilts with it, and there's no restoring force. Tom Stanton has a good demonstration video of this.

Great video, I had no idea those were being used on big ships. I had heard about the drones 3D printing a building before, but hearing about it and seeing it again just now gave me a crazy idea. With smaller drones there is no need to be limited to layer printing a large object. There could be many of them acting more like wasps, making structures like how wasps build their nests. They would land and hold onto the structure to conserve energy and build up small areas at a time. Imagine a swarm of these things, they could easily track their own progress to make sure that it is shaping up properly.
This video shows some weird dude building a completely useless contraption that doesn't even work, but at the same time, this perfectly shows the spirit of curiosity, engineering and using both fail and success in order to learn and improve. Tom Stanton concluded that using pressurized plastic bottles is more economical by weight than CO2 cartridges when making his air motors, maybe try modifying it for one of those? He explains in his most recent video that 1 2l plastic bottle holds 14x the air of one CO2 cartridge and weighs 20g less.

You could easily feed your engine and make a small steam boiler with a burner, it would weigh about the same as a co2 tank but it would have more power and last longer.
I'm only 2 minutes in writing this comment. Its really cool the level of appreciation you show to the humming birdman, i never knew how intricate and precise it's movement is, also its really cool that it keeps it's head perfectly still with all of that movement.
As a mechanical engineer myself the video is a blast to watch and the gear is accurate the material selection to the design which slightly resembles some of the solid powered jet engine used for space,kudos to the great work man!
It seems with the plastic mechanism and leaking, that the pressure deforms the delrin and allows small gaps to form on the surface of the manifold. I would suggest using a recessed housing with some rubber gasket material or sealant. I'd also like to see a button release for the co2 like you were planning, it seems like when you finally pierce the cartridge you still need an extra twist to get full power, and that's wasted pressure you could be using for thrust. Fantastic editing, you really put a lot of work into this, and I feel that if you want to avoid wear on parts that oscillate, you'd be better trying to design with compliant mechanism techniques rather than letting the parts rub against each other.

Incredible work and problem-solving! Your skill and experience in this far outweighs any suggestion I can make, but I'll throw this in just in case. The gunk from the CO2 cartridges may be oil, as some cartridges have oil to lubricate whatever mechanism they attach to (often paintball guns, and your supplier may have simply re-branded that type). You may need food-grade CO2, which should not have those contaminants. It's also possible that the contaminants are from the hose supply instead, and just weren't noticed immediately. On the other hand, some small amount of lubrication might be needed for the system. Also, the gearing probably adds considerable weight while reducing efficiency. If it's possible to get the RPM you need by adjusting the motor size or properties, that might be helpful. But, I don't know how that would interact with the sizing need to control the CO2 flow rate to prevent the freezing. Finally, there is probably a way to get that figure-8 movement that hummingbirds use, and (completely guessing, but it seems right) that shape might be a way of efficiently redirecting energy instead of losing it in the back-and-forth motion, and it probably has aerodynamic benefits by better utilizing the 'angle of attack' of the wing. A 4-bar linkage can generate that movement - there's an 11-page published paper "Design and analysis of "figure-8" trajectory flapping wing mechanism based on crank rocker" (by Shan Tang, in 2022), and a 162-page master's thesis entitled "Design of a 'Figure-8' Spherical Motion Flapping Wing for Miniature UAV's", (by Zohaib Parvaiz Rehmat, in 2009), which probably cover the topic in great detail. I'm looking forward to the next video!
Watching this go from concept to design to creation was beyond incredible! As a huge fan of Dune, ornithopters are one of my favorite things and anything even remotely similar is an amazing feat of engineering in my mind! Absolutely love how the ending creation even Sounds like a hummingbird!!!
It is literally the propulsion method of a Dune ornithopter(expelled gas thrust + auxiliary lift wings). I'm sure if you had lockmart behind it they'd find a way to get it airborne untethered and the avionics figured out(they were doing even crazier stuff before fly-by-wire)
As a piece of engineering, that little motor is just beautiful. If I had to make a guess about the compressed co2 issue on the 3d printed version, I would say it's quite likely because of the heavy texture of the 3d print. It is likely providing a large surface area for the ice crystals to form. You may have some success giving it some sort of treatment that will make a smoother surface. With FDM ABS prints, an atomised acetone treatment works a treat. However that looks like an SLA powder print maybe but there is probably some kind of solvent that would achieve the same effect.
I think this has been mentioned already but the stability issue described is probably due to the ornithopter not being perfectly vertical at release, and as it tips, the lift vector shifts in the direction it tips. You lose some lift (probably enough that you lose altitude since it just barely hovers) and instead get some thrust (the ornithopter starts drifting "forward"). Man your video is absolutely insane, the amount of talent that goes into this whole thing honestly blows my mind and makes me question what am I doing as an engineer lol. Subscribed

A quick question on the motor choice - why go from compression to rotation to reciprocating? Would compression direct to reciprocating be more efficient? @TomStanton has done a lot of work on creating a very efficient air engine - of course, you'd need power on the up and down stroke...
I suppose it was because I initially wanted it to work with a spring like a wind up toy. So I designed the wing mechanism around that rotating spring. Could be a weight saving and more efficient route to take your approach on the next design.
@@worksbydesign Any reason you didn't go with the time-honored rubber band? Those tend to output pretty much constant force as well (they behave differently from springs at a microscopic level).
Your lock video was the first I discovered. I saw the hose attached on the ornithopter & thought it would be cool if it could be done with a CO2 cartridge. I can see some of the frustration and had one major thought: that the puncturing of the CO2 would need to happen before releasing all of the energy at once. The best idea I could come to would be a sealing mechanism that was linked to a release of both chamber and the ornithopter itself. Think of the water rocket . . . it had a base that would release the water rocket and let the pressure escape at the same time.
Maybe a gasket that is spring loaded with enough pressure to remove entirely when triggered. There may even be places where the gearing, or release mechanism could benefit with ball bearings

You've done a great job at optimizing the wing and nozzels, the type of engine as well was a spot-on choice. Maybe hose or tube tail connected to a water bottle could serve both as a ballast and air tank, helping it fly more stable and with more autonomy than a c02 cannister. (perhaps a mechanical dragonfly?) The material of choice for the compressed air engine blades is also going to be important, teflon is perfect for metal contact and sealing (with a minuscule amount of lubrication). I thought it was an interesting choice to go with a rotary motor and then convert it to a flapping motion (with the cool, but ultimately inefficient linkages and gearbox). I think you might be able to get a much higher power / weight ratio by directly driving the wings with a piston based design. Something sort of along the lines of a double-acting steam engine, where the piston is driven in both directions. You'd need a double-acting design to avoid the necessity of a flywheel. You might need to get a little clever with your valve system however, as without a flywheel you'll need to ensure that there's no possibility of the piston getting stuck at either end of its travel. However, if you can get it to work you can likely shave off a bunch of weight and reduce mechanical losses.
Very nice project! One thought, you need an oscillating motion for the flapflap. Maybe its simpler to use a linear oscilation air pressure motor as energy source. Like the piston of a steam engine which is valve controlled pressurized from both sides alternating. Then you can transfere the motion only with linkages without rotary motion in between. One issue could be, that there would be no fly wheel to hold momentum in phases with no pressure...

Thank you, sir. This was intensely interesting. Most people get discouraged when faced with so many engineering problems, but you keep on being creative, I admire that. Also, thanks for the information regarding OnShape. I compared OnShape with many other CAD-type software and it beat them all hands down. The designs are public ( in free version ) if you want privacy ( it comes with paid version ). Titanium parts and direct piston driven oscillating the wings and for the wings start with a carbon fiber skeleton with the wings made out of a flexible epoxy resin and to strengthen the wings there is very lightweight carbon fiber mesh to support the entire flexible wing so it would be skeleton-light mesh-encased in thin flexible resin. Oh yea, that black smegma on the aluminum is an oxide mixed with something in the co2 probably, IDK exactly tho
I enjoy the small design features not even explained like the built in plan to have the initial air inlet and then a single hole addition going to the more likely to work method. just good practice to do things like that

One significant difference between the operation of the ornithopter and wing movement of a hummingbird seems to be happening at the base of the wings. The ornithopter keeps the base of the wings parallel to the body, whereas the base of the hummingbird's wing moves back and forth, along with the rest of the wing. Perhaps try to allow that piece of graphite to rotate around the wing spar, at least to some extent. Keeping it aligned seems to waste a lot of energy by pushing air back and forth without generating additional lift.

As a NASA engineer we studied the Eagle for flight and figured out that if we could master it's flight design and build it up into an aircraft that could hold 130 people and fly from LA to NY for only $360.00 in fuel which is 97X more fuel efficient than any jet. The trip would take 12 hours instead of 5 hours but tickets would be profitable to sell at under $99.00 per round trip. We would still need to add a small engine for cabin pressure, cooling and heating, lights and all the other gizmos that make a modern plane fly and fun. This may take more fuel than the actual propulsion aspect of the project. Work to mimic nature still continues at NASA today.*
Have you considered a pressure regulator for the CO2 cartridge? I don't know how small and light you could make it but running at similar pressure as the air compressor would avoid the leaking issue as well as prolonging the flight time. It's just an idea. I'm no expert here

Awesome project dude, I was wondering if that black powder might be residual nylon powder from the MJF process that's being blown out of the binding material by the sudden high pressure + temperature change, which would gum up the system. Also having 63% of your thrust being rocket based is 100% legal ;P The way I see it, a hummingbird doesn't use compressed gas to move so it doesn't have to worry about exhaust, but yours does so it's just a side-effect. I look forward to seeing any progress you choose to make on it!

This is an incredible piece of engineering and a very well produced video! Be wary of the pendulum rocket fallacy, having your center of mass below your center of thrust does NOT help flight stability, so you’ll have to find some other means of stability

This was really cool! Two things this made me think of, and both may have been mentioned already. 1. Id be curious if a tesla turbine would be more efficient in this application. 2. Im pretty sure the plastic had issues because it wasn't work as good of a heat sink (or in this case a cold sink) as the aluminum was. If given enough run time, perhaps it would also had the same, or similar failure mode as it contued to cool down, and as condensate freezes. This may be resolved with essentially a heat break between the co2 cartridge and the mechanism. Id be worried this solution would add too much weight though. Need to warm the co2 up more before it enters the turbine somehow is my thinking. These are the thoughts of a humble novice, take them as you will. Really enjoyed this, Thanks!

First off, wonderful video! I thoroughly enjoyed it - loved the engineering and problem solving you employed. I do have a couple of suggestions from my knowledge of cars - Looking at your "engine" chamber I see that your "Piston Rings" are floating, it would be interesting to see how much efficiency is lost there if the seals are floating and letting air through. (My suggestion would be to put tiny arch-shaped springs like the ones used in Mazda's rotary engine to ensure a proper seal. My other suggestion would be to improve on power management (for better power efficiency and flight time), what I mean by that is that as it stands air is forced to move the engine as much as it can; but as you pointed out the humminbirds' wings move in an almost "8-shape" pattern - therfore and the turning points of the 8 shape you don't need as much power. Hopefully this can help you in a follow up video!
It looks like the the points in the cycle at which the wings change direction is a little jerky, and which may be contributing to the stability issues and costing efficiency. You mentioned at the beginning of the video, when you were observing the hummingbird wing movements, that it seems like they move in a slight figure 8 pattern. It would add some complexity to the design of the wing arm linkature, but if you were able to replicate that, it may lead to a smoother transfer in the wing direction, and help with thrust and stability. Just a thought. Awesome work though, it was fascinating to watch the process develop. Thank you for sharing!
Awsome project and great engneering going on! CO2 suggestion: I had to deal a lot with those CO2 cartridges in my work, and we had this ice building up in our peircing point amd blocking the mechanism. The CO2 have relativley high freezing point and when moving from the the really high pressure inside the cartridge to atmosphere through a tiny hole, the gas expension causes freezing. We ended up replacing the CO2 cartridges with N2 cartridges which have much lower freezing point. It solved the issue.
In the humming bird vid, you can see they move their wings like a figure 8 so they don't have to decelerate to changer directions, whereas your wings have to completely stop before changing directions. Finding a way to make them move in a figure 8 could add a great amount of efficiency.
Co2 needs an expansion chamber, you lose half of the pressure by using it directly, also a regulator would be good, from 800 down to the usable 130 psi u need. You could try with airsoft greengas 3d printed tank should hold the pressure, butane is liquified at around 130-160 psi
Amazingly well done video and use of CAD, 3D printing.. and most of all, your incredible ingenuity, engineering, and perseverance. I've had an idea for a drone with a single propeller (or a pair of counter-rotating ones) which i put into some of the scifi stories i've written.. and have always found ornithopters fascinating. You've really got talent and determination. Bravo!

the tail and the ability to rotate to wings slightly to deal with direction and wind. you really hit the nail on the head with the hummingbird concept though. Imagine a backpack with autonomous flight using compressed air. Well done. Keep going. I do have to say, a hummingbird feathers open on the backstroke- creating tons of friction on most materials. Your design is more like a bat but you are missing the thumb while getting the hummingbird effect- is impressive enough to make me suggest looking at how a bat walks with the help of the wings. That way you will be sure to get the full range of motion needed for yours.. I found this checking other designs because of my behemoth project.
You focused more on wings but if you again watch the video of bird you can see that its tail also plays some role in balancing so you can modify the tail of the design to see any improvements, great effort all the very best

That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. @@franklinmcLaughlin i imagine it like balancing a broom vertically in your hand. You want the bristles (heavy part) to be at the top while you move the handle (light part) around to adjust the balance. Having the inertia away from the force point you can rotate around the COM and maintain control.

Back in the '90's when I was into paintball, the guns would freeze up when using CO2 unless you added an expansion chamber inline between the gun and the cartridge. The expansion chamber is basically just a thick aluminum tube to let the CO2 expand and absorb the temperature shock before it gets into the moving parts, sort of like a heatsink I suppose.
I was thinking about an expansion chamber to reduce freezing as well. Wondering too if the different materials (aluminum/print matrix) are an issue due to thermal contraction rate.
the real problem here was solved by tom stanton a while back: CO2 is too dense, and requires materials that are not weight efficient to keep it pressurized.
regular air compresses better than CO2, and can be contained in a plastic bottle, much lighter than the aluminum CO2 cartridges.
the net effect is more power for less weight. the downside is volume is increased.
Definitely a moisture problem as the gas freezes then melts , you want dry air the engines dealing with both air and fluid not accounted for!!!

Dude is a freaking engineering genius. Just remember, there is NO ONE anywhere to ask for tips or thoughts on this type of project. No books or classes you can take. He just tackled it. (Lubrication of all moving parts & especially the air-vane motor seems necessary to me though)

Great video, I had no idea those were being used on big ships. I had heard about the drones 3D printing a building before, but hearing about it and seeing it again just now gave me a crazy idea. With smaller drones there is no need to be limited to layer printing a large object. There could be many of them acting more like wasps, making structures like how wasps build their nests. They would land and hold onto the structure to conserve energy and build up small areas at a time. Imagine a swarm of these things, they could easily track their own progress to make sure that it is shaping up properly.

Tom Stanton concluded that using pressurized plastic bottles is more economical by weight than CO2 cartridges when making his air motors, maybe try modifying it for one of those? He explains in his most recent video that 1 2l plastic bottle holds 14x the air of one CO2 cartridge and weighs 20g less.

@@worksbydesignIf you don't want to do it with electricity and you don't have enough power from compressed air, then why not just use steam? You could easily feed your engine and make a small steam boiler with a burner, it would weigh about the same as a co2 tank but it would have more power and last longer.
I'm only 2 minutes in writing this comment. Its really cool the level of appreciation you show to the humming birdman, i never knew how intricate and precise it's movement is, also its really cool that it keeps it's head perfectly still with all of that movement.
As a mechanical engineer myself the video is a blast to watch and the gear is accurate the material selection to the design which slightly resembles some of the solid powered jet engine used for space,kudos to the great work man!
It seems with the plastic mechanism and leaking, that the pressure deforms the delrin and allows small gaps to form on the surface of the manifold. I would suggest using a recessed housing with some rubber gasket material or sealant. I'd also like to see a button release for the co2 like you were planning, it seems like when you finally pierce the cartridge you still need an extra twist to get full power, and that's wasted pressure you could be using for thrust. Fantastic editing, you really put a lot of work into this, and I feel that if you want to avoid wear on parts that oscillate, you'd be better trying to design with compliant mechanism techniques rather than letting the parts rub against each other.

Hello, as an Iranian, I congratulate you for your talent and you really have a strong will and perseverance, I hope you will always be successful in all projects.
Incredible work and problem-solving! Your skill and experience in this far outweighs any suggestion I can make, but I'll throw this in just in case. The gunk from the CO2 cartridges may be oil, as some cartridges have oil to lubricate whatever mechanism they attach to (often paintball guns, and your supplier may have simply re-branded that type). You may need food-grade CO2, which should not have those contaminants. It's also possible that the contaminants are from the hose supply instead, and just weren't noticed immediately. On the other hand, some small amount of lubrication might be needed for the system.
Also, the gearing probably adds considerable weight while reducing efficiency. If it's possible to get the RPM you need by adjusting the motor size or properties, that might be helpful. But, I don't know how that would interact with the sizing need to control the CO2 flow rate to prevent the freezing.
Finally, there is probably a way to get that figure-8 movement that hummingbirds use, and (completely guessing, but it seems right) that shape might be a way of efficiently redirecting energy instead of losing it in the back-and-forth motion, and it probably has aerodynamic benefits by better utilizing the 'angle of attack' of the wing. A 4-bar linkage can generate that movement - there's an 11-page published paper "Design and analysis of "figure-8" trajectory flapping wing mechanism based on crank rocker" (by Shan Tang, in 2022), and a 162-page master's thesis entitled "Design of a 'Figure-8' Spherical Motion Flapping Wing for Miniature UAV's", (by Zohaib Parvaiz Rehmat, in 2009), which probably cover the topic in great detail.

Watching this go from concept to design to creation was beyond incredible! As a huge fan of Dune, ornithopters are one of my favorite things and anything even remotely similar is an amazing feat of engineering in my mind! Absolutely love how the ending creation even Sounds like a hummingbird!!!
It is literally the propulsion method of a Dune ornithopter(expelled gas thrust + auxiliary lift wings). I'm sure if you had lockmart behind it they'd find a way to get it airborne untethered and the avionics figured out(they were doing even crazier stuff before fly-by-wire)

If I had to make a guess about the compressed co2 issue on the 3d printed version, I would say it's quite likely because of the heavy texture of the 3d print. It is likely providing a large surface area for the ice crystals to form. You may have some success giving it some sort of treatment that will make a smoother surface. With FDM ABS prints, an atomised acetone treatment works a treat. However that looks like an SLA powder print maybe but there is probably some kind of solvent that would achieve the same effect.
I think this has been mentioned already but the stability issue described is probably due to the ornithopter not being perfectly vertical at release, and as it tips, the lift vector shifts in the direction it tips. You lose some lift (probably enough that you lose altitude since it just barely hovers) and instead get some thrust (the ornithopter starts drifting "forward").

A quick question on the motor choice - why go from compression to rotation to reciprocating? Would compression direct to reciprocating be more efficient? @TomStanton has done a lot of work on creating a very efficient air engine - of course, you'd need power on the up and down stroke...
I suppose it was because I initially wanted it to work with a spring like a wind up toy. So I designed the wing mechanism around that rotating spring. Could be a weight saving and more efficient route to take your approach on the next design.

@@worksbydesign Any reason you didn't go with the time-honored rubber band? Those tend to output pretty much constant force as well (they behave differently from springs at a microscopic level).
Your lock video was the first I discovered. I saw the hose attached on the ornithopter & thought it would be cool if it could be done with a CO2 cartridge. I can see some of the frustration and had one major thought: that the puncturing of the CO2 would need to happen before releasing all of the energy at once. The best idea I could come to would be a sealing mechanism that was linked to a release of both chamber and the ornithopter itself. Think of the water rocket . . . it had a base that would release the water rocket and let the pressure escape at the same time.
Maybe a gasket that is spring loaded with enough pressure to remove entirely when triggered. There may even be places where the gearing, or release mechanism could benefit with ball bearings

You've done a great job at optimizing the wing and nozzels, the type of engine as well was a spot-on choice.
Maybe hose or tube tail connected to a water bottle could serve both as a ballast and air tank, helping it fly more stable and with more autonomy than a c02 cannister. (perhaps a mechanical dragonfly?)
The material of choice for the compressed air engine blades is also going to be important, teflon is perfect for metal contact and sealing (with a minuscule amount of lubrication).

I thought it was an interesting choice to go with a rotary motor and then convert it to a flapping motion (with the cool, but ultimately inefficient linkages and gearbox).
I think you might be able to get a much higher power / weight ratio by directly driving the wings with a piston based design. Something sort of along the lines of a double-acting steam engine, where the piston is driven in both directions. You'd need a double-acting design to avoid the necessity of a flywheel.
You might need to get a little clever with your valve system however, as without a flywheel you'll need to ensure that there's no possibility of the piston getting stuck at either end of its travel. However, if you can get it to work you can likely shave off a bunch of weight and reduce mechanical losses.

Very nice project! One thought, you need an oscillating motion for the flapflap. Maybe its simpler to use a linear oscilation air pressure motor as energy source. Like the piston of a steam engine which is valve controlled pressurized from both sides alternating. Then you can transfere the motion only with linkages without rotary motion in between. One issue could be, that there would be no fly wheel to hold momentum in phases with no pressure...

Titanium parts and direct piston driven oscillating the wings and for the wings start with a carbon fiber skeleton with the wings made out of a flexible epoxy resin and to strengthen the wings there is very lightweight carbon fiber mesh to support the entire flexible wing so it would be skeleton-light mesh-encased in thin flexible resin. Oh yea, that black smegma on the aluminum is an oxide mixed with something in the co2 probably, IDK exactly tho

One significant difference between the operation of the ornithopter and wing movement of a hummingbird seems to be happening at the base of the wings. The ornithopter keeps the base of the wings parallel to the body, whereas the base of the hummingbird's wing moves back and forth, along with the rest of the wing. Perhaps try to allow that piece of graphite to rotate around the wing spar, at least to some extent. Keeping it aligned seems to waste a lot of energy by pushing air back and forth without generating additional lift.

As a NASA engineer we studied the Eagle for flight and figured out that if we could master it's flight design and build it up into an aircraft that could hold 130 people and fly from LA to NY for only $360.00 in fuel which is 97X more fuel efficient than any jet. The trip would take 12 hours instead of 5 hours but tickets would be profitable to sell at under $99.00 per round trip. We would still need to add a small engine for cabin pressure, cooling and heating, lights and all the other gizmos that make a modern plane fly and fun. This may take more fuel than the actual propulsion aspect of the project. Work to mimic nature still continues at NASA today.*
Have you considered a pressure regulator for the CO2 cartridge? I don't know how small and light you could make it but running at similar pressure as the air compressor would avoid the leaking issue as well as prolonging the flight time. It's just an idea. I'm no expert here
I think you need to reach 51% thrust by wings. Anything lower is a rocket with wing assist :p

Awesome project dude, I was wondering if that black powder might be residual nylon powder from the MJF process that's being blown out of the binding material by the sudden high pressure + temperature change, which would gum up the system.
Also having 63% of your thrust being rocket based is 100% legal ;P The way I see it, a hummingbird doesn't use compressed gas to move so it doesn't have to worry about exhaust, but yours does so it's just a side-effect.

Be wary of the pendulum rocket fallacy, having your center of mass below your center of thrust does NOT help flight stability, so you’ll have to find some other means of stability

It's great and very satisfying to see it fly at the end but for me, the best part of this video is watching the whole process, watching you running into issues and trying to come up with a solution to solve them. Oh, and awesome editing, by the way!!
This was really cool! Two things this made me think of, and both may have been mentioned already.
1. Id be curious if a tesla turbine would be more efficient in this application.
2. Im pretty sure the plastic had issues because it wasn't work as good of a heat sink (or in this case a cold sink) as the aluminum was. If given enough run time, perhaps it would also had the same, or similar failure mode as it contued to cool down, and as condensate freezes. This may be resolved with essentially a heat break between the co2 cartridge and the mechanism. Id be worried this solution would add too much weight though. Need to warm the co2 up more before it enters the turbine somehow is my thinking.
These are the thoughts of a humble novice, take them as you will.

First off, wonderful video! I thoroughly enjoyed it - loved the engineering and problem solving you employed. I do have a couple of suggestions from my knowledge of cars - Looking at your "engine" chamber I see that your "Piston Rings" are floating, it would be interesting to see how much efficiency is lost there if the seals are floating and letting air through. (My suggestion would be to put tiny arch-shaped springs like the ones used in Mazda's rotary engine to ensure a proper seal. My other suggestion would be to improve on power management (for better power efficiency and flight time), what I mean by that is that as it stands air is forced to move the engine as much as it can; but as you pointed out the humminbirds' wings move in an almost "8-shape" pattern - therfore and the turning points of the 8 shape you don't need as much power.

It looks like the the points in the cycle at which the wings change direction is a little jerky, and which may be contributing to the stability issues and costing efficiency. You mentioned at the beginning of the video, when you were observing the hummingbird wing movements, that it seems like they move in a slight figure 8 pattern. It would add some complexity to the design of the wing arm linkature, but if you were able to replicate that, it may lead to a smoother transfer in the wing direction, and help with thrust and stability. Just a thought.

CO2 suggestion: I had to deal a lot with those CO2 cartridges in my work, and we had this ice building up in our peircing point amd blocking the mechanism. The CO2 have relativley high freezing point and when moving from the the really high pressure inside the cartridge to atmosphere through a tiny hole, the gas expension causes freezing.
We ended up replacing the CO2 cartridges with N2 cartridges which have much lower freezing point. It solved the issue.
In the humming bird vid, you can see they move their wings like a figure 8 so they don't have to decelerate to changer directions, whereas your wings have to completely stop before changing directions. Finding a way to make them move in a figure 8 could add a great amount of efficiency.
Co2 needs an expansion chamber, you lose half of the pressure by using it directly, also a regulator would be good, from 800 down to the usable 130 psi u need. You could try with airsoft greengas 3d printed tank should hold the pressure, butane is liquified at around 130-160 psi
Amazingly well done video and use of CAD, 3D printing.. and most of all, your incredible ingenuity, engineering, and perseverance. I've had an idea for a drone with a single propeller (or a pair of counter-rotating ones) which i put into some of the scifi stories i've written.. and have always found ornithopters fascinating. You've really got talent and determination. Bravo!

the tail and the ability to rotate to wings slightly to deal with direction and wind. you really hit the nail on the head with the hummingbird concept though. Imagine a backpack with autonomous flight using compressed air. Well done. Keep going.
I do have to say, a hummingbird feathers open on the backstroke- creating tons of friction on most materials. Your design is more like a bat but you are missing the thumb while getting the hummingbird effect- is impressive enough to make me suggest looking at how a bat walks with the help of the wings. That way you will be sure to get the full range of motion needed for yours..

You focused more on wings but if you again watch the video of bird you can see that its tail also plays some role in balancing so you can modify the tail of the design to see any improvements, great effort all the very best
