I was blessed with a great memory and a strong natural ability to mimic/replicate things that I see which made it fairly easy to do well in school, but I sorely lack much in the way of creativity. I don't have the head for engineering and it just makes my mind spin when I see folks who can visualize a creation and all of the little components. 8:16 is a perfect example. Every indention, spring, and fastener is there for a purpose, and his statement that he just "came up" with the design blows me away.

@StuffMadeHere I have an idea for your .27 cal pencil sharpener. First you need to vent some of the gas off. Second don't try to force too blunt objects together and expect a sharpened result, in other words try you can't just compress the wood on the pencil. Try the sharp angle on the sharping end again but this time try to not only cut the wood instead of compress it, but also give the cut off bits somewhere to go. I wish i could leave a diagram in comments, but generally if i were to try to build this i would vent the gas off at the same place the cut off bits go. Hope you try this in the future, this video was very fun watch. Keep doing what you do!

Are pencil sharpeners a phasee we all go through? The explosive one needed like a reverse type of auger so the pencil spins snd athr blades are on sides in the moldbnd a pressure release where you can control the blast.... However when I went through my phase I didn't reinvent the wheel but I had an assortment of pencils and shapes and sizes.. so I scaled up a standard type xacto pencil sharpener to fit carpenter pencils and much more. Ended up with a 2hp electric motor cause I had nothing else... I know, but it was strong and fast..

8:57 in When sharpening a knife one pushes the blade edge towards the stone and again towards the honing steel. The opposite would result in cutting edge "rolling".
I get that with a razor knife in hand (my go-to as well) one whittle from behind the point to the tip. If the hole of death swung towards the intended point from Infront I believe it would have a better chance at sharpening the graphite as well. Furthermore because it's pushing against the force the hand applies to the pencil it doesn't get yanked out of ones hand, how much the way I anticipate the chainsaw is about to do.

My favorite unnecessary challenge has still gotta be the one to create the least convenient UI input methods. I think its just on reddit tho

My biggest takeaway from this video has nothing to do with sharpening pencils. I am just seeing one of the luckiest men I have ever observed. He has a phenomenal workshop (which I am super jealous of), but also an amazing and supportive wife. Just imagine being able to do the things you love with the people you love. Thats beautiful, and I would watch this video multiple times just to witness sincerity of their relationship. Wholesome, uplifting, inspiring, educational, entertaining. Sure justifies the subscriber count.
