    I’m excited, I have a rescue sharry baby that I won at a raffle at my orchid society.
    It was totally munched by scale and the media was rotten. As soon as I repotted it and treated the scale, it took off.
    It’s new growth is huge and throwing out loads of roots, so it’s really happy now that it’s being cared for. 🥰

    Definitely also have the stalling behaviour on mine, but then it stalled all summer on all the pbulbs that it was forming. Probably temperature related, in my case. Yours did a splendid job on those spikes!

    There are a number of different Sharry Baby clones out there. Yours looks similar to the 'Sweet Fragrance', which I have found to have less of the chocolate aroma than others, definitely a very sweet/sugary aroma, and the blooms are somewhat larger and better colored (I've seen some of the grex with no clonal name, nearly brown petals and sepals, smaller blooms and an undeniable chocolate scent). I find the scent of 'Sweet Fragrance' to be a bit much, I prefer Heaven Scent 'Redolence' which has the same fragrance, just toned down a bit.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +2

      Unfortunately I lost the tag, but I'm 95% sure I did purchase it as a sweet fragrance variety. I have been eyeing the heaven scent but not sure if I have room for more Sharrys 😂 Well, I kinda do, but think I'd rather keep that space for other orchids 😀 I have some young Rhy gigantea x vandopsis hybrids that going to be a little big for their current location soon, so may be doing an orchid shuffle - and sharry is not a space saver 😅

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 4 года назад +1

      @@TheOrchidRoom the other thing to consider with Heaven Scent is that the spikes are held more upright than with SB, so it needs A LOT of vertical room when in spike.

      As a direct comparison, I have both the oncidium sotoanum and the oncidium sharry baby sweet fragrance, and they do smell quite different, as does the twinkle which also has sotoanum in the parentage. The sotoanum is much more sugary, like sugar syrup, whereas the sharry baby is much more soft and vanilla-ey 😀 To an 'untrained' nose 😉

      @@TheOrchidRoom could you possibly do a comparison video on oncidium orchid fragrances? I just received my first oncidium twinkle fragrance fantasy and was interested in possibly purchasing more varieties but was curious about their scents and the differences before I decide which ones to get. Like which ones smell like what and which ones smell stronger than others, how far away can you smell them from, etc.

    Gorgeous! 243 !! How long did it take to count all those and not start over thinking there was a mistake / double count? 😂😂 I get confused when I see more than 10 blooms and have to start again 😅 great video! 👍🏼

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      So I counted them 5 times and results ranged from 230 to 280 😂 so counted one last time and got 243 so I've put that. But most of my counts were around the 250 mark. I got so bored of counting but also felt like people would want to know 😂 So my 243 is not an accurate count really. Just an *I can't count these again* count 😂

    I just got one that came in spike and looks very big for its pot can it be safely repotted while in spike? No buds have formed yet

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад

      Hi! For the smoothest transition you should wait for a new growth to be making new roots. Repotting while in flower means the plant is diverting most of its resources into flowering, rather than growing roots and adapting to a new potting media. However, it may be a while before it makes a new growth for you now, as they flower just after maturing the growth. In those circumstances a repotbmay be beneficial now, rather than waiting a long time in unknown media which may harbour pests/snails, which is why I do usually repot straight away- particularly for oncidium types. The sharry baby is vigorous so It shouldn't set the plant back- pros vs cons I'd say repot now- I've had too many times where snails in the pot have munched roots while I'm waiting. But it's something there is debate over and both sides have valid points.

      I've ordered so many orchids from them over the years! Recently have been a bit less impressed, I think they've been victims of their own success a bit, but the Sharry baby should be a safe bet I think, they are super vigorous 🙂

    Hi my oncidium sharry baby leaves got black dots/spots r they normal?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      Hi Julie! Many oncidium types are prone to fungal spotting on the leaves, and the sharry baby is one of them. They usually start at the leaf tips and work their way down. You can try regular preventative antifungal sprays along with increasing air movement, or leave them and just cut them off when they become unsightly. You will often find they are worse in hotter temperatures and affect older growths, the new growths come in clean and then start to develop them as the next set of growths matures. You can see them on this plant in this video, I think I mention it here. Hope that helps.

    How often do you repot her?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      Just whenever she outgrows the pot, last repot was when she went into semi hydro a couple of years ago 😄 if the new growth starts heading for the edge though it may be time for an upgrade 😅

    Why does my Sharry Baby smell like... nothing at all?! I’ve waited a full year for blooms and then nothing, zero scent. Really disappointed even though the blooms are attractive.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 4 года назад +1

      Catherine Smith yeah thanks. I've since discovered the various clones. As you say, mine would probably produce more fragrance in the sun but alas at this time of year the UK is sadly lacking that department! My oncidium twinkle has a far stronger fragrance.
