  • Today we repot one of my Sharry Babies which has flower spikes! Since we're at it I'll share more thoughts on repotting orchids while in bloom or spike.
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
    When repotting, the main problem is root damage. This is what will set back orchids, or make them give up their spikes, buds or blooms. The less we damage the roots, the less chances for buds to drop!
    I always pay attention to:
    1. The orchid I am repotting, some are more sensitive than others.
    2. The medium in which the orchid is, some media tend to damage the roots more if it's removed.
    3. The pressure of repotting, sometimes we can postpone this procedure until the blooms are done.

    Thank you so much for all your videos! I've recently started putting together a playlist for new orchid growers. And this video covers most growing methods in a nutshell! I like to give people options. I appreciate all you do!

    Good video. I was glad to see that your oncidium is in leca. I have a couple of mine in that medium as well and was wondering if that was a good choice. Now I know that since the plants are healthy I did the right thing. Always enjoy your videos.

    Hi Danny. Gosh i went thru such a trip with my sherry baby. And now after a year I'll say have a lot of patience. I first got this guy on ebay and in coco bark media which was quite broken down. So the media was changed and leca was the choice. Being the change was during December, and perhaps such a drastic change to leca this poor little guy stalled. Eventually contacted spidermites and went thru a grueling cleanup. I decided also to divide into two to allow the roots grow better and also cut off more of the old remaining roots, sort of a crew cut as barbers would call it, removing the dead roots all the way up to the bulb. Finally spring came and a few tiny green tip began appearing. Thru the summer both divisions started taking off and though not picture perfect has grown five new bulbs and is doing well in the leca. Sorry for this long one but ... Hope this can help someone.

    I'm in a pinch! I just bought a sharry baby in spike and she's got snails! So I'm absolutely going to repot her just as soon as my materials arrive. She's in sphagnum moss so I hope I can do it without losing the spike.

    Hi, Danny. I am sorry if you have already answered this elsewhere before but I was wondering if you could show us your process of sanitising your media. Let's say an orchid suddenly poofed of fusarium in LECA. What steps do you take before reusing the medium for another orchid? I believe you mentioned boiling LECA before. Would this be effective in killing off pathogens harmful to our orchids?

    Dani - suggested video - fall care / winter care. As the season changes, when do you start reducing fertilizer, water, etc? What do you change in your routines? I just watched your video about it from 2014. It would be nice to have an update for semi hydro. : )

    I repotted my Monte elagante to semihydro from bark,with no new growth, but majority of roots didnt die and they started to branch out in semihydro, and everybody says bifoliate cattleyas are finicky,so if you have healthy orchid,then u can repot them whenever u want,just that give them temp above 18Celsius, and some bright light and everything will be ok..same happend to my francis fox and maiki..

    Hello! After so much waiting and hunting, I finally have a Sharry Baby! It is gorgeous. Very big, with bulbs and growths averywhere. It was rootbound and needed repotting asap. The thing is that it has a lot of roots outside the pot. Does this orchid produce aerial roots?

    Hi, Danny! Do you have any experience with stonewool? I am using it to help mounted plants or baskets to keep higher humidity... But I see some nurseries use them to plant small orchids, like Masdevallias. I do have one Masdevallia in wool and it flowers nicely. But is stone wool a material that decays??? I am not sure about it...

    Hi Danny. So I have watched many of your videos and one of things I picked up is that oncidiums don't like leca. However I see that yourself and Anna belle from the orchid room both have yours potted in leca? Mine is currently repotted in organic mixture in a self watering pot but I would prefer leca.... Is it just different from the other oncidiums? Thanks so much

    Hi, I'm really excited to see my first rebloom spike on my phal! I have a question though: I have some orchid fertiliser that is supposed to help with enhancing blooming, and I'm unsure whether I should switch to using that on my orchid now? The spike is just starting to peep out between the leaves, and the bottle says to use with onset of flowering? Should I begin using it now?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 лет назад

      Hi, in my experience bloom boosters don't enhance blooms, I use mainly one type of fertilizer all year round. But there is nothing wrong with switching to it if you think it might help, if it's a reputable brand it should not harm anything :)

    What leca size are you using? I found a 1-4mm and a 4-8mm but don't know which one to go with.

    hi Danny! Tomorrow I want to repot 2 Phals ( to replase the bark chips with unorganic media - expended clay balls from Keramitz) , but one of them has 2 spikes , and she is pretty old (about 3-4 years) and she went trough a lot of things along the years because it was my sister first orchid , then my first one. In the past I had some problem with the roots because of an unpropper repoting that cause a lot of sters, what has generated losing some of the leaves (2 new leaves grow - 4 leaves die , and that happen in one year , and the last one remained very tiny ) . In the present she has 4 leaves ( 3 normal and one very tiny). So , my question for you is : should I repot now , when she is in spike or maybe wait for the flowers to fade?
    PS: Last time when I replace the bark chips with new ones was in August , so th media is not necesarily breaked down.

    Thank you for this video, Yesterday I wrote a comment and as I see this today I want to ask my question. :)
    I just bought an Oncidium Sharry Baby Seedling. I bought her online and she arrived 2 weeks ago with 6 leaves the size of a pen. I gave her a little bit of water just to re fresh the moss and she is sitting in the same pot that she arrived in with sphagnum moss inside of a 3 inch sized pot. I can see a few tiny roots on the top and I don't know "what kind of media" to use and "when I should repot her and what type of pot?" I am unsure and very new as how to handle a new seeding and I wanted to ask if you have any advise for me as "how to handle and care for this new seedling". Please and thank you!! ;)

      I'll be watching for her reply. I have 2 from Hawaii and was told not to repot for at least a year or two. They said I would know when the plant was tight in the pot or I saw the pot budge. They are in 3" pots with spaghamoss. They said the plants need to adapt to my environment that is a shock in itself so repotting it now was not advisable. I got the in June and now they are taking off in their little pots. I need to be careful not to drown the roots since winter has set in. I would love to know how they fair and what you do to learn. I am.

    Hi Danny! I'm having serious issues with my current orchid I adopted from a friend. The roots were suffering from over watering and being compacted in sphagnum moss. It was also in a non draining pot. I filled all your instructions, reported, change the potting material to bark, cleaned in hydrogen peroxide, and then cut off what I thought was "all" of the dead roots... unfortunately it doesnt seem to be getting better.. and I notice mold in the growing material and around the roots down in the material... i cut off the flowers since there starting to wilt... put them I'm water and now all of sudden the flowers are full again... I think the roots are not functioning... what did I do wrong!? Should I pour more hydrogen peroxide down in the potting media?! To kill the remaining mold?! Help!!

    I bought 3 orchids from a nursery that was closing. They were so pot bound. When I pulled the plants out of the pots I couldn't see the potting medium. The roots look fine. But I'm afraid of getting the old medium out.

    • @christwist8455
      @christwist8455 5 лет назад

      It shouldn't be difficult. Get yourself a pair of tweezers, it'll make the job easier. Depending on your orchid, the roots may be tough or fragile. Soak the roots for a little bit to make those roots elastic and less prone to snapping

    • @alisonghany1540
      @alisonghany1540 5 лет назад

      It wasn't planted in moss. The bark is like dirt and the roots are so tight. I have never seen roots like this. When I pulled it out it looked like an octopus.

      First find out what of orchid it is since the roots description is vague. Danni has a video on every kind of repot from organic to LECA. Decide what media you are using to pick the repot. Regardless I rinse the roots in te id water to get the old medium off or most of it, maybe soak it for 10-15 minutes to make the roots pliable to remove whatever left medium from the roots. You still might need a tweezer. Done this and a newbee.

    Hi Danny, I agree that season is secondary to the growth pattern of the orchid. (learned that at a cost) from my Catt.s and I am still in the learning curve (still make mistakes with them)
    My most successful reporting with cats was when the new growth is starting new roots since the old one will for sure die. Do you agree?
    I just have a doubt : some of my Catts have a long rezone and so need a wide pot but not so deep so I kind of struggle to find the balance. Should I cut the old pseudobulbs? my plants are far from specimen size but still a 12 cm pot is kind of small :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, yes that is the best time to repot. About cutting old pseudobulbs, it will have to be your preference, everyone is different. From a health point of view if you leave the orchid with at least 3 psb it should be ok. Old psb can start new growth, when or if? You never know. You can play with cutting the rhizome or growth hormones, but I don't think there's guaranteed success. Lots of info on that one huh? :)))

      Arman 222 Hi, I believe she did a video and commented on the recently, maybe the flower one. If I find it I will let you know. If memory serves me your first spike will bloom and it may decide to turn to the other after it blooms, when in flower or may wait. Seems they have a mind of their own. She has said a spike may start and stop all of a sudden like to rest. Be patient and lucky you, two spikes.
