- Aloha! Watch me unbox a new orchid! This one has blooms that have a sweet fragrance that smells like chocolate! I have been wanting to get this orchid for a while and now I finally snatched one. Do you have a fragrant orchid?

Hi Ron! If you like fragrant orchids and the easy care of Phalaenopsis hybrids, then you totally should look for Phalaenopsis "Sweet memory' Liodoro, because it has the potential to fill a room with the scent of its pretty flowers

Vanilla is actually an Orchid ! Vanilla planifolia is the one used in kitchen =)
I guess the current blooms are a bit too old for you tu smell anything, but I'm actually surprised you didn't smell it back at Home Depot, cause this smell is actually a room filler. Somepeople can tell that there is a Sharry Baby in a room before actually seeing it ! I can't wait for you to experience it ^^
Semi hydro in lecca should do it just fine imo. Keep us updated ! (Btw, the Syngonium albo behind you is an absolute BEAST =O congrats !)
You’re correct about the smell filling the room! They next morning that’s all I could smell in my plant room 😋. All the blooms eventually fell off though; I suspect from acclimating to a different environment, but there is a new leaf coming out so I think she’s happy!

If you’re looking for vanilla smelling, go for Oncidium Twinkle, they’re hybrids that are compact and are fragrant

The cool thing about the sharry baby is that depending on the variety you get it can smell anywhere from vanilla, milk choco, dark choco, and different depending on the person. When the sun shines on that orchid that's when it starts smelling strong. Another Orchid you'd might like that's easy is neofinetia (vanda) falcata. It's a mini orchid and smells so intensely like honey suckle. Others say jasmine tea but I've never smelled that tea so honey suckle is the best I can describe it. Mine has two spikes right now and it smells so strong at night. Alsooooo spraying the leaves with fertilizer doesn't do anything for the orchid and you just risk crown rot. They leaves don't absorb the minerals. I'm not telling you want to do but also don't do it! lolol
Omg that neofinetia is amazing! You’re right about the variety of smells. I definitely smell more vanilla than chocolate. Also, good to know about the fertilizer mist; I suspect it works better spraying on the roots. Thanks! 😁
@@SuchPlants yeah I’ve smelled one that was exactly like Swiss mix packets lol and another like vanilla. But yeah just focus on fertilizing the roots. Orchids have so many leaf folds that even just regular misting you risk leaf rot if water gets trapped. And don’t forget to flush your orchids every once in a while because mineral build up can burn the roots or leaves. I learned that the hard way lol oops
Orchids aren't grown like other plants so if you're not familiar with them you should start watching some orchid videos. Hard to believe you wouldn't have knowledge of them when you grew up in Hawaii. (Boggles my mind why you would even leave Hawaii!) If you want to grow them in water, or hydroponics, watch Danielle's Orchid Ranch and Nicole Deanna, although I think it's better to learn how to grown them in bark when just starting. Some of my favorite channels are Roger's Orchids, Ninja Orchids, The Orchid Room, Orchid Girl. There are tons. Good luck and thanks for sharing your plants!
Thanks for the tips! I’ve been away from Hawaii for too long and I guess in general I have just taken all plants for granted haha 😅 So far I’ve had really good results with my orchids in LECA! ☺️

I was scurrred too at first! I think they’re intimidating because they’re not exactly cheap plants when in bloom. You should practice with a phalaenopsis orchid. Drop it in LECA and walk away-they love it! 😊

Question, with the orchid in leca do you keep it always in water?
Yes, it should always sit in water about 1/3 of the way up the pot. That should be enough for the leca to absorb moisture to take up to the roots. I find that the roots that grow downward into the water don’t mind it and they never rot, but it’s best to change the water out once a month.
@@SuchPlants ah, eventually I want to try leca and pon (pon not for the orchid) lol I still have one mini phalaenopsis orchid and a half dead big one lol the mini one is doing good in just bark. Growing new roots 💖
@@kriskuboart9635 I’ve even got suggestions to use fluval stratum, which is a medium used for aquarium plants. Apparently it also promotes crazy root growth. Haven’t tried it yet but maybe I’ll give it a go for my next dying plant haha.
@@kriskuboart9635 but definitely try out LECA! You have to make sure to rinse off any and all soil and then just put in LECA with water. After a week of acclimation, you can start introducing diluted liquid fertilizer. I use a mix of water, liquidirt, and dynagro once a month. Do it for your half dead orchid! I’m sure it’ll be happy fast! 😆
@@SuchPlants Yes! I know the teeny tiny basics of leca lol next on the list is definitely liquid related items and the orchid spray. Right now I only have the miracle grow plant food >.
