  • Getting in a few repots before Winter in Brisbane, Queensland. Oncidium Sharry Baby has grown in to a very large plant and has been long overdue for a repot. I've given her a 25cm pot but it's still probably too small. It will eventually need to go in to a very large pot or divided in a couple years.
My repotting style is a lot more relaxed now. I remove old sphagnum and obviously dead roots, but aim for efficiency and minimal root disturbance. Having said this, oncidiums do not mind a little root disturbance and it often triggers greater new root production. I'm quite confident Sharry baby will continue to do well after this repot.

Your potting mix is so beautiful. Those roots should be very happy. Oncidiums turn into beasts so quickly. I’ve also moved away from the intense repotting sessions. I honestly believe the orchids appreciate the less invasive repots. I also do media refreshers. Only cleaning it minimally. Team Up-pot!

Yes, particularly if you are reporting in to the same media it is already used to!

I am just about ready to start repotting stuff here as well. I missed the mark on many orchids because it was far too cold this spring, and well, my set up ... yeah... I need warmer temps before shocking orchids by repotting 😬 the root system of sgarry babies is incredible! What an undertaking 👍🏼👍🏼 have a great start to your new week 🌸

Hopefully I can get a couple more repots in before temps drop here. I see Easter weekend will have some cooler nights at 16C though already 😣

Have you noticed any difference when you use leca vs orchid bark for the oncidium sharry baby?

Hi there D, please tell me where you purchase oncidiums. I have got a few really healthy plants from Red Fox orchids and a couple from a nursery at Ipswich Qld but just wondering where you have sourced from ?

Mostly online Glenn. Robertson’s, MnS orchid, eBay. Though these oncidiums i got from an orchid show. If you’re in the Brisbane area there are quite few orchid shows coming up you could check out.

Ou wow! How did you managed to grow it soo huge?! I’m seriously struggling to keep my oncidiums alive and there’s no much on the internet either… how do you water this beast? 😂
