  • The last repotting video of 2021. Really. Lol. Thanks to Nicole Deana and Patrick...Growing Orchids in Idaho...for their excellent Oncidium videos that helped inspire this repotting. And thanks again Tammy for the plant! The orchid community is a blessing!
    Thanks everyone for watching and happy growing!

    This Sharry Baby is going to do great in moss! They really enjoy the moisture, that pot will be filled completely with roots by the summer time. Thanks for the shout out! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Amy!

      I have mine in a wood hanging basket that I believe dries out a bit quicker than the plastic pots. I think it’s the perfect set up for my environment!

    😀Hi Amy, If you need to water three times a week, then the moss set up is the way to go. I am sure it will produce new growths over winter if it gets that bright light and winter sun. Hope your Thanks giving holiday is wonderful, sending you and family lots of love and blessings. Stay well and take care lovely friend💕🌼

    💚 Thanks for the reminder to place some packing peanuts in the bottom as it's so easy to over water my huge 10" pot. I have 7 Pseutabulbs, Yes! Just counted today. Now if I could only get her to spike. I told her too just like you did yours but she doesn't listen. Thanks again dearest friend. 🤗

      It's really easy to overwater with moss. I catch myself doing just that and have to remember to slow it down. And tell your Sharry Baby to bloom, and that's a direct order! LOL! Hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend my friend. Sending you many blessings. 💖⚘

    Great job! Found this to be the best way for me also. A little over year ago tried one of my Onc. In self watering pot. I have mixed feelings about the test. I repotted 2 at same time, one in the normal mix of spagmoss/bark, other in self watering pot same mix. They both bloomed twice this year, however the one in regular pot bloomed 3 times and had more growth. If I didn't "know" my plants, would consider a success with the self watering... but she does not seem happy to me. I see some shrinking in bulbs and not "tight" like she used to be. I feel as much as I wanted success, plant told me she rather have "fresh" watering. Who could blame her, I rather drink fresh water too! 😆 Loved video and info! We never get sick of repotting videos, always learn something new!

      Hi Tina! Thanks for sharing your test results with me. Sometimes you have to take the plunge and experiment, but I'm glad I didn't go with the self watering pot. I agree with you, I enjoy fresh water too! :) Thanks so much for watching and happy growing! :) Amy

    Hi Amy. I'm so happy to see how well she's doing! Mine is in spike and I can't wait for her to bloom. Great video! I'm finding myself repotting my orchids into a mixture of bark and moss. I put red lava rocks in the bottom of all of my pots for drainage and to help weigh them down.
    Unlike phalaenopsis, the Sharry Baby oncidium likes constant moisture. I keep filtered water in her tray and she sits closest to my humidifier. I'm sure yours will be so happy now. I can't wait to see her bloom for you. Happy Thanksgiving dear friend. 🙋‍♀️💐

    My Sharry Baby has bloomed twice this year. It must like it here. Of all my orchid, my Oncidiums do the best. After last time it bloomed, I repotted it with moss. It was in the original pot, however it looked like all roots no medium. Bigger pot with moss and it is blooming again. Interesting thing it has been it bloom now for months. One spike blooms at a time, not all at once. First one is done, it is blooming on the second one and the three spike is working on blooming. So I get to enjoy it for awhile. I had it outside this year. I recently bought it in, because the nights outside are going down to 52 F. March it will go back outside. I got two Catasetums last winter. Grew them outside. One got a spike the other did not. The one with spike had 5 flowers on it. But they never full opened, I brought it inside also, thinking it is too cold at night. Maybe I should have left it outside. The flowers died before they were fully open. Or maybe I should have brought it in sooner. Days go up to 78 F.

      Sometimes the buds blast and there's no explanation to it. But 52 F is cold for an orchid...so I think you did the right thing!

    Hello, Amy, and thanks for this repotting video. I have some sphagnum hydrating in a little bit of seaweed extract, and I plan on using it in my, Wilsonara Space Mine 'Red Rendevous', oncidium. I think it will benefit from a bit more moss in the pot than I originally added when I repotted it. This was one I stumbled on in my local Fresh Market, in June of 2020. It was simply labeled, “Exotic Orchid”. I haven’t found anything other than phals at this market since. It has a beautiful flower. 🤞🏻 Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. We are going to a Vols football game this afternoon. Brrrrrr!

    I use a 50/50 mix of bark and moss. So many growers use straight moss, and it's nearly impossible to clean those delicate roots when re-potting.

    Amy, I have a Sweet Sugar Oncidium (maybe Oncidessa now?) that I’ve grown in moss for years now. I live in central SC and have always put it outside for the summer. The past two summers the humidity here has gone off the charts. Last summer it started limping a bit, but I got it through, it bloomed last fall. This spring I repotted with moss and lava rock, and it’s not doing well at all. Just checked and in the last 3 weeks, with the extreme heat and humidity, it’s probably lost half its roots, but there’s no funky smell. Do you think I could save it by potting in bark? I love this orchid and really want to save it? Many thanks 😊 🙏🙏🙏

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  Год назад

      Hi! I would lean more toward bringing it inside. You could repot it in bark, but it's going to require vigilance to keep it watered in new bark during this part of the summer. Happy growing! 😇

      Thank you so much. That’s exactly what I did and repotted it in smaller plant with moss. So good to know I was on the right track. And so grateful for you for really teaching me the bulk of what I no know about orchids. ❤

    Thanks so much for doing this video!! I requested this video because I have a sharry baby, currently potted in a mixture of mainly bark and moss. I was so curious what you would use as I don’t think mine is doing the absolute best it can. One question- are oncidiums the same as other orchids in that they don’t do well when slightly over potted?

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  2 года назад

      I hope this was helpful...your comment inspired the video! These grow really fast, so you want to give them enough room in the pot for the next year's growth. Happy growing! 🌷

    What size of orquiata bark is that, because I heard that some people said that there’s big and small orquiata bark chips.

    I’ve had a Sharry baby for about 3 years that I have struggled with. It hasn’t bloomed at all since then. Will repotting in moss help?

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  9 месяцев назад

      You can always give it a try and see if it will bloom for you in moss. But it does take several years for these orchids to mature enough to bloom...that might be the issue with yours. Happy growing!
