Matt Herskowitz - Tribute to John Coates

Tribute to John Coates was my very first jazz composition, inspired by the strikingly
original sound of this pianist/composer. Back when I was in Philadelphia in the late ‘80s,
my then-neighbour took me to hear John Coates at a place called the Deer head Inn in
the Delaware Water Gap, the only place he played at that point. I was completely taken
with the gentle, sophisticated subtleties within such simple, pure, open melodies and
harmonies… it got inside my head and led me to compose this song as a kind of tribute
to what he unwittingly gave me. I imagine it’s a gift we’d all love to pass on, and one
which we’d all love to hear has been received…
