How to use Highlight Alert for great exposure

  • Highlight alert is one of my favorite settings. It allows me a shortcut for quickly checking my exposure and a trick for perfect exposure. I can tell in bright sunlight and any screen brightness if my image is blown out or too underexposed. The histogram is always helpful but highlight alert is just a little quicker. This is a great way on how to check photo exposure.

I really enjoy your videos. I’ve learned a lot from you and I’m starting to shoot for my first university down here in TX in September. I’m curious why do I see pros taping out the name of their camera? I noticed yours was in this video. I appreciate you posting for all of us!

I saw people doing it when I first started and liked the look of it. No other real reason! I think sometimes people think that if others can't see the canon brand then they may not try to steal it. But I can't imagine that really helps.

Is there a way to view the over exposure -blinkies- BEFORE you take the picture - either thru the viewfinder or live view.
My 5drs only after I've taken the photo.
    Thanks

I'm not exactly sure if you can see the blinkies before hand on a 5d, but in live view you can probably pull up the histogram and it will give you a better visual of the exposure. If there is a big mountain to the right of the histogram then it is most likely overexposed.

      @@Paul_Rutherford Paul,
Thanks - I usually use the histogram for that reason but many times it doesn't depict over exposured areas I'm concerned about.
The only way is to take a test shot, but as you know light can change.
I've tried exposing to the brigher areas and compensated in Post, but would rather get It with out having to "Cook" after.
Do any other cameras provide live view or other "blinkies" ?

@@billz4795 Honestly I don't know the settings that well of all the cameras out there, but I know video cameras/settings tend to have more options for focusing and exposure. So newer mirrorless and dslr's might have the option, if so it probably buried deep in the settings.

Exactly. My Fuji camera shows the blinkies before taking the picture. The Nikons don’t either.

do you know if sony has this feature?

    • @Paul_Rutherford

I would think they do. If not I know some cameras have a "zebra display" that does something similar but it is live on the camera before you take the photo.
