How to turn off the blinking
You have to turn off the highlight alert to turn off the blinking
Gotta share an edited image at the end to see the final result. To my eye looks a smidge dark for my tastes.
I normally underexpose a third of a stop. So that makes sense. An edited image would be a little better
Name body?
Canon 1dx mark ii
Hi! I just discovered your videos. C's fan here and an amateur filmmaker as well. Can you do a video explaining the Basketball Code Replacement spreadsheet at 3:00?
I did a video on code replacements. Should be in my videos list on my profile
This is the best advice I’ve heard so far 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Nice
👍
Trying to get into sports photography, recently bought a sigma 60-600mm f 4.5 sports for my Sony A7III, this is very helpful, thank you for sharing!
Happy to help!
i want to get into this line of work but i have no idea where to start like which degree to get, how to apply to become a photographer for an mls team and things of that nature. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
It is very confusing. Instead of me writing a bunch of text I suggest watching my other video about getting credentials to games. Should be helpful. No photography degree necessary. My degree is in economics. haha
Have you ever experienced that on night games? Once in while I shoot the runner and I can get soft and sharp on one run? Never thought about waves at evening to night gsmes?
I'm sure it could happen. Heat waves are all about the turf being much hotter than the air above it. The changes in temperature cause the light to bend/refract. So maybe early evening the turf is still hot and the air cools down quicker it might happen.
Reason 9,324,165 why turf sucks
the worst
I usually come home with more turf infill on me than my kid playing the game.
@@jeffgasper8639 😂
I never, and almost hate it, taking photos standing up, but this is a good reason for very sunny days.
There's a time a place for it. but generally being low is much better!
The fourth photo 💀
🙌
Wow, I love this!
Thanks!
I love photography ❤
🙌
That was great video. Thanks for the insides. May I ask, where would you position yourself at the field? Are there any „hot sport“ or „no goes“? Appreciate.
Depends a little on the stadium/team, but most of the time you can't shoot from behind the goal, benches, or getting in front of the fans. Most people shoot around the corners either looking straight down the field or even with the 18 yard box looking across the field.
@@Paul_Rutherford Appreciate. Thx ♥️
Might be the most wholesome video I have ever seen.
Thanks!
Hope y'all had a fun day! ☺️
It was!
Bro been hanging with a toddler so long he forgot everyone already knows this
Never a bad time to remind people! Toddler brain is real
You can see the fun and passion you have as a sports photographer
Thanks! Its a fun job!
yes bro
Its a great feature!

I shoot for a Division I Power 5 college volleyball team and I fully agree with Paul's recommendations. He's one of the first people I've seen on RUclips to recommend focusing on an attacker's legs under the net. That really works because, usually, the thighs will be in the same plane as the face on an attack. One additional thing I would recommend is shooting warm-ups. You have more freedom to move around the court before actual play starts. During warmups, you can ask the referees if you can shoot from the referee stand and usually they will say yes. Also, you can get really low. One of my favorite shots is to put my camera on a Platypod on the floor aiming up to get really dynamic shots of attackers in the air. Thanks, Paul - great info.
Thanks for the kudos! Shooting warms ups can be very valuable. I normally don't only because my schools don't use the photos that much, but you can for sure get great images then as well!

Y not use auto iso ?
Honestly never tried it before. But might have to next time. AP has always worked for me in the past so I havnt had the need to try something different.
One wrong move
It's a scary technique
Have you tried this with ultimate?
I have! Mainly on pulls since you know exactly when they will happen, but have tried a few in game. There are some example way back on my insta. But tough to find. haha
@@Paul_Rutherford haha ofc. I figured the pulls would be perfect. I might wanna play around with this at YCC 👀
Dope 🔥
Thanks!
Did you shoot everything handheld? Greetings from Austria
Hello! Outdoors I have a monopod for my 400mm, but everything else is handheld.
F11 sunstars 🌟
Nothing better
Great stuff Paul👍 @keitht_photography
Thanks!
I've dealt with very similar conditions awhile back lol; you seemed to handle it well! Great video
Thanks!
Hi! How can I get it online?
I made mine from left over materials I have. But if you google computer sunshade you can buy one.
I was a team photographer for the Senators/Getty for years, some of the best hockey I’ve shot, met a lot of good people too.
I'm sure that was an amazing experience!
roughly how many photos did u take on that day??
Roughly 5 thousand.
Is it possible with the Sony A7iii + Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens? I only have that lens, for Photograph Volleyball
Good question. For sure you can photograph volleyball with that lens. You'll probably want to stay in the middle of the court instead of the end lines though.
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Paul, do you visit these places first to understand what your settings will be in your camera for exposure, depth, or is that just from experience?
I try to get there early and get everything dialed in during warmups if I haven't been before. Other wise I will look back at old images to see the settings I used before. Once you've shot a lot it is easy to get the shutter speed, f/stop, and ISO dialed in quickly.

Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Man I am not even into photography but you can put that song over anything and I will get excited about it. 😅
Guess I'll have to use it in every video!
What are you shooting with and why?
I shoot with Canon. 1Dx mark ii and an R5 for hockey. Happened to start with Canon a long time ago and haven't felt the need to switch. I believe any company now makes great gear that will be perfect for 95% of users.
Short but very informative 😮❤
Glad it was helpful!
I’m glad I shoot swimming outdoors. The indoor lighting would drive me nuts.
I would love to shoot swimming outdoors, not only is it lowlight, but normally the lights have such bad hues to them too.
@@Paul_Rutherford yeah totally understand that. The lighting in those gyms are always dingy looking. I had to shoot a swim meet once inside a gym. It’s a battle keeping shutter up to freeze the action vs noise. And to top it off the light quality.
Just coming across your channel. You explained nicely. Do you shoot outdoor sports, I.e., softball with any filters? I ask because no matter my adjustments in the Triad, anyone wearing any white in their uniform, let alone an entire white uniform, I get blown out highlights. I enjoyed the video and subscribed. Thank you,
I don't shoot with any filters. I let the white uniforms be a little blown out if it is a sunny day. Not the entire uniform, but if some spots are blown out that is ok with me since they are already white uniforms. I'd rather the skin be properly exposed vs the uniform.
2:17 what does concatenate do?
It basically takes values from different cells and puts them in a certain order. That way you can get the team, position, number, name is a certain order you want.
some really nice tips. nice video.
Glad you liked it!
The cheaper set up sure can do great things!!! I did with first generation of 7D with the 70-200 f2.8L
Totally agree!
Paul, as a person who hasn't gotten onto the field on the professional level just yet. What's the etiquette on moving spots or starting at a spot on the field for shooting? Lets say an opportunity was awarded to me, this would be too intimidating of a question to ask in a press/media room. Where does one learn this sports photography etiquette if not on a professional level yet?
Great question. In terms of shooting locations it really depends on the sport and venue. Some stadiums in the MLB allow you to go wherever as long as you aren't in the fans way and others have strict shooting positions. If it is your first time at a venue I suggest asking other photographers or a team staff member if they are available. Other photographers will be happy to let you know whats going on if you tell them its your first time there and are polite!
After getting in with USA Today, was there a salary or a per game or event pay? Or was access to the event along with the credential considered your payment?
Good question. I get paid as a freelancer on a per game basis. Different outlets have different set ups. So it could be that you get just the access, you don't get paid but maybe royalties if your images sell, a day/game rate, day rate plus royalties, or get a salary if you are on staff.
Jesus love you all so much❤️✝️
How do you edit your photos?
I use lightroom for 90% of my photos otherwise I do basic edits in photoshop. Depends on the client.
