It actually was, It was like being iside your head, and that helps to think before shooting, to give a meaning to single photo, for advertising, stock etc, thanks a lot again!
Extremely! Hoping to work with a media company soon and seeing this aspect is so very helpful. Love to see some videos about your in-game workflow. Thanks for sharing ALL this knowledge/info!!
Love this! I'm the team photographer here in St. Louis. Myself and our videographers always joke that if they ever mic'd us up, it'd just be us cursing about missing focus or a sideline ref running in front of our shots. Completely unusable😭 Great stuff as always Paul!
Thanks for the real life video. As the former Sporting KC team photographer that video is 100% accurate of what I'm thinking during the game. I especially love that you use the R5 and 1Dx II the same way I do - kind of scary actually. My 1Dx II is just so natural and after cropping/editing the pics are identical to the R5. The only thing different I do is I moved to my 300 from the 400 because when I looked back at all of my pics that sold, the vast majority were in the closest 1/3 of the field and in the box. With the R5 I can still crop down for full field shots.
Super helpful. I'm shooting my first soccer match next Saturday. I'm dual wielding Sony Aiii's with a FE 200-600mm on one and a 16-35 on the other. Its an amateur match so I'll be pretty close otherwise the 16-35 would be too small tbh
Thanks for taking the time to put this together! Very helpful…if you have opportunity in the future I’d love to hear your strategy for covering Corner kicks, free kicks and penalties.
Glad it helps! I'll keep that in mind to expand on in the future. But in general it depends a little on the score of the game and who is taking the corner, free kick, penalty. But in general for corners I'll prefocus on the goalie then try and switch to the person I think will head the ball. For free kicks and penalties it depends on the position I'm in as well. A lot of times getting the person kicking isn't a necessarily a great photo, but a save would be. So I'll focus on the goalie to try and get the save, but then switch to the shooter if I know it ended up a goal to get the celebration. An exception would be if the player kicking is super famous, Messi, or I need a photo of them kicking the ball. Hope that helps!
Thanks Paul - I'm shooting both my daughter's soccer and University level games with a sony 200-600. (Saving up for that $$ 70-200). Fun to watch a pro at work!
I have another video about getting credentials that should be helpful! But the main gist is to shoot as much as you can, make a portfolio, network with other local photographers, and try to get in with some local blogs/media sights to start out.
Like this format as well. Always love to see quick glance of the gear for each event and day. Especially for new England weather. Keep it up! What gloves do you find the best for photographing sports?
Thanks for watching! Honestly I'm not sure what brand they are, my wife got them as a gift a few years ago. But they have holes at the end of the thumbs and index fingers which is perfect.
Haha. It is very nice they give us chairs to use. I have a step stool as well for other sports in case there isn't anything to sit on. That is not as comfortable with my long legs.
Paul, as a person who hasn't gotten onto the field on the professional level just yet. What's the etiquette on moving spots or starting at a spot on the field for shooting? Lets say an opportunity was awarded to me, this would be too intimidating of a question to ask in a press/media room. Where does one learn this sports photography etiquette if not on a professional level yet?
Great question. In terms of shooting locations it really depends on the sport and venue. Some stadiums in the MLB allow you to go wherever as long as you aren't in the fans way and others have strict shooting positions. If it is your first time at a venue I suggest asking other photographers or a team staff member if they are available. Other photographers will be happy to let you know whats going on if you tell them its your first time there and are polite!
Best is different for different people. I use a 400mm 2.8 for field sports and love using a 16-35mm for wide photos. But other people like using a 300, 600, 70-200.
Hey, I am an event photographer here in the Caribbean.. I haven't yet owned my first camera as yet but I hopefully will soon be investing in my first camera. I have worked with Canon & Nikon before haven't worked with any other's as yet.. Do you have any advice or so for me on what may be the best/ most suitable camera for me? I also want to be able to be able to be Wide & also be able to Zoom.. So something like a bridge camera with inter-changeable lens?
I don't know a bunch about Nikon, but the R6 is a great camera and the 24-105 allows side and zoomed shots. I don't know your budget so its hard to give a lot of recommendations. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I am shooting in Jpeg. When shooting for a wire service they want small fast to deliver files. But I generally set up my white balance before the game.
@@ronydinho6799 I use auto white balance a lot. But there are a few ways to to do it. You can try Kelvin mode and then setting it until you like what you see. or you can use the pre programmed modes for sunlight, cloudy. etc. Should be on the back of your camera.
Was this actually helpful!?
Seeing you in real time, was very interesting! You are definitely working hard.

Nice shots! I have wanted to get into sports photography myself, any tips for how to improve or how to get myself into positions like an MLS game?

Amazing, One question, what are the focus settings used? that would be helpful.
I shoot single point on servo mode. Do you also mean the auto focus modes? I think I use the one that is subjects that accel and decel quickly.
@@Paul_Rutherford first of all thanks for responding you're the man jsut for that. and yes you answered my question thank you very much.
Nice! What settings you using and what mode you using for those sharp photos?
I was shooting 1/2000th, F/2.8, and ISO 3200.
Yes indeed.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Let me know if you ever have any specific questions or sports you want to see,

Glad it helps! I've tried a few and it never seems to actually help my knees so I go without them.
What was the name of the app you used to send off the photos & captions quickly?
I use Photo Mechanic
roughly how many photos did u take on that day??
Roughly 5 thousand.
hey! what happened with the last video? i've saved it for later and now is gone :(
