Watched this 3 times now and would love to see more of the same! Nowadays, I photograph non-league and loving every minute. Look forward to the next vid of the day in the life of a football photographer 😃

Brilliant video ! Loved how you explained about the management of the day and how you relay photos back. I do photography for main arena up at crufts and this has helped a lot. Subscribed !
Really informative and great video for aspiring photographers (which would include myself!) It was great to see a behind-the-scenes look of a professional match
Great video. I'm matchday photographer for WSL Blues women - no pitchside ethernet where they play! I'm lucky to not need to wire out from the pitch like all the PA/Getty/Reuters/Rex photographers - I send mine up to the Blues media same evening while sipping on a beer. I'm still using the 1DX like you (and the 70-200 on a 5Diii) with a cast iron 400mm 2.8 mki. I'd never have thought 20 years ago I'd be into football photography, but I absolutely love it.
Hi Pete, wonder if we’ve passed by each other in the past? I covered Yeovil v City Women last season I think it was, really impressed with the quality! You out with them every Sunday then?
Mark Kerton Yes I cover most of their matches - but not every away game. I don’t remember going to Yeovil though. But if you’re ever at a City women’s game look out for me! Be nice to say hello. Blues have just changed manager as it happens.
That’s right Pete yes, PA, as a freelancer obviously. A real privileged position to be in working for them too. Can be quite difficult some months as a freelancer so to have a regular set of shifts is great.
Nice video mark very informative on what I’m looking for I want to be a press photographer and sports photographer so this video helps a lot thank you.
Great video. How many pictures do yo take on average for a match? Of those how many are keepers, and I don’t mean the position on the field. Lol Cheers from the New Jersey Shore.
Hi Chris. Thanks for watching. I usually shoot between 800-1200 frames at a game. We send live off the back of the camera through the match and usually send in 40-60 frames. Then might send in a further 20-40 in a 2nd edit after the match. Hope that helps Chris👍🏻
Very awesome info in for those situations. I hope to get into NFL photography. So far people trying to make me do more High School football when I have 6 years of Training Camp using a 200mm canon lens.
Few questions: ISO auto or manual? Do you get good shots of opposite end goal with that 400mm, or do you focus on shooting action in same side of the field you are positioned? How many photos do you shoot per game? Do you use back button focus? Thanks for great content!
Hi Joonas. Mainly shoot in AUTO ISO. The 400 is great for far end goal action yes, the ideal lens for sport. Usually average around 1000 frames each game, action depending of course. Some 0-0 games can be as low as 400 ish! I use shutter button focus. Just can’t get my muscle memory into BBF! Hope that helps Joonas👍🏻

This is brilliant Mark! When I finish work later Im going to go through your videos! Can I ask how do you get into this type of photography? Do you have any videos regarding this topic? Cheers you’ve got a new sub!
Thanks for watching. This white cover is actually a free hand out from Canon Pro Services nothing special but it’s a great cover and works very well. Hope that helps👍🏻
Just found this video as I'm looking to get into sports photography myself. Have been shooting a bit of basketball and go-karting and a few shots at the Silverstone Grand Prix this year (2022). What a great insight and huge kudos to you keep swapping bodies depending on the shot in front of you. Will definitely be subscribing now and watching through the rest of your videos. One question, which I probably already know the answer, where to start? And I think the answer is local clubs and progress from there.
great video and very informative ... i am just wondering why "manual" i always use shutter priority for football, am i doing something wrong settings wise, should i be on manual all the time ???
Apologies, I missed this comment! I tried a rain cover on the 70-200 but found it just got in the way as I swap lenses so much! The cover on the 400 is just a free Canon, pro services cover, handed out at Wembley one season. It does the job nicely.👍🏻
Thanks Darren, appreciate your feedback. Sat here finishing off an edit from Bournemouth’s game this weekend, also listening to the Pompey game! Hopefully live in the next hour👍🏻
Like your work Mark. I’m originally from Portsmouth but now living in Vancouver, so Hockey is my main sport that I shoot and basketball in the summer. Checkout UKChief on Instagram 👍😉
Mark Kerton Hi Mark, yeah we are on lockdown, still, getting things done, learning with online courses on photo mechanic, photoshop etc, sorting out my gear so I’m ready to get going when this craziness goes away. Keep the vids coming bud 👍
Hi Darren. Same as here in the UK then! We’ve just gotta keep plodding on keeping ourselves occupied! I’ve just filmed a short piece on kit maintenance. If it looks ok I might post it, we’ll see?! Stay safe Darren👍🏻
Mark this is a great video and at some point I would like to be a full time sports photography. Your video is amazing I was able to feel the environment and also see "a day in a sports photographer". I'm curious on knowing what gear you use? Also if your focus is merely on the half or 1/4 of the court that you are? Also (besides of the lens size obvios reason) why swapping between the cameras; what you were trying to photograph? Finally: do you use AI Servo and which focus mode you use the spot or area?
Hi Ricardo. Thanks for getting in touch and supporting the channel. I recently put together a "Whats in my bag" video with all my kit on show. I swap lenses as the 400mm is for all the long shots and then as play moves closer I change to the 70-200. Hope that helps Ricardo.
Hi, Im starting out with taking pics of my daughter playing football.... I have a Lumix G85, Should I be using 4k burst when taking pics? I sometimes use it in manual, but not that good at it yet., thanks for your insight in to what you do.
Hi Adrian, sorry for the very late reply! I’m not sure about the Lumix camera set up, but that word 4K gives me nightmares! Only being that I don’t have a huge memory on my laptop or a lot of hard drives for anything in 4K it’s going to use up a lot of time and space! As a rule, we just shoot in JPEG and send off 1-3 MB images. To achieve multiple images in a burst you need to be keeping the shutter speed up to around 2000 of a second👍🏻
Hi Mark. Really enjoyed this video. I shoot mainly fashions but have managed to cover the slower pace of the Australian Golf Open. Are you shooting RAW at all times and typically how many shots are you taking in the 90mins.
Hi Stewart. We always shoot in jpg as large files aren’t needed and speed when sending is a must. Usually around 800-1200 images will be taken on a busy game👍🏻
Thanks for watching Paul. I use a mini-max stool. You can find these on eBay, not the cheapest but really good quality. Mine hasn’t let me down yet after nearly 6 seasons👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thanks Mark, I've just bought the walkstool and it's superb. Q? Where did you get hold of the 400mm I've got a 500mm and sometimes its too much so I'm digging deeper in the wallet :)
great content, would you please share the tips of which focus mode that you're using? will you choose the eye detection method while taking football photos? thanks!
Great job mate, I shoot at amateur matches here in Spain, I just leave on my 70-300 ( I use an Olympus M4/3 so that gives me 140-600 full frame) great tip about the cloudy white balance, I do that here too and it really makes the images pop..Keep up the good work....... On a side note I have the Shane Long match shirt from that game!!!
Can you explain what lenses you are going back between and why? They both look like they would have amazing reach-so can I ask why are you switching back and forth? Thank you!
Hi Cynthia, thanks for watching the video. The larger of the two lenses is a fixed 400mm F2 .8 which I use for the far goal and middle of the pitch action. As the players run towards me, I then switch to the 70-200mm to catch all the action from the 18 yard line and closer. Hope that helps, thanks for getting in touch
I don't own a large prime lens...(yet!! :-) ) So I didn't even think about the limitations. Thanks for explaining! Love your down-to-earth videos. I just found you-I'm sorry you no longer are doing sports. I do think, however, sports and wildlife are similar in some needs, so I am hoping to still get valuable info from your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Tomorrow it will be my first time i will photograph football game and this video was very helpful... I have 70-200mm lens, will that enough?! and do i need tripod for that lens? btw love ur work!
Hiya. You’re 7200 will be okay for anything one side of the pitch but you will really need a 300 or 400 prime lens to for action further away from you👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Hey! Update; i did kinda good for the first time (ur tips actually help me, like stay on stadium to the end and shoot trainers handshake) I'll be very appreciated if u look my photos ( instagram.com/p/CRyPJjlJHjT/? ) and give me big critical (everything u see whats wrong (yesterday i watched ur video how to crop and helped a lot) ) so i can fix myself... And thank u once again for these helpful videos!!!
Really interesting video. Thanks Mark. Great to see behind the scenes of another area of photography 👍. Is 1/1250 a usual speed for football photography?
Hi Mark, Do you have a favourite position to sit at when photographing A match, I always sit in line with the 18-yard box either Goal line or Touch Line I will admit mine is Southern league games so do not have the crowd problems.
Hi Keith. Thanks for getting in touch. I’m very similar to you, 18 yard line mostly. Although Saints first half I tend to go to the sideline/corner flag for any cele’s. Think the 18 yard line is a happy medium at most grounds. Hope that helps👍🏻
I use the Sun sniper dual camera straps for carrying 2 camera bodies on my side as I find the normal strap cuts sometimes into your neck. Also Sun sniper camera straps has a steel cable inside the camera straps so the the camera can’t be robbed with someone with a sharp object trying to cut the strap.
Great video...quick gear question, when you shoot with the 400 and 70-200, are you using the 7D2 body on the 70-200 to "close the gap" in focal length between the 200 and the 400? It looks like you aren't using two 1DX, but I can't immediately tell if your other body is 5D or 7D.
Hi Mohammed. We always shoot in JPEG. Quicker process speeds. The shots in the video are edited, most of which were sent to the papers. Thanks for watching Mohammed👍🏻
Brilliant, so glad I found your site/page... thoroughly enjoyed it, I've watched it 3 times already, can I as you a question Mark, with your 70-200, what do you have set for the metering?.. wouldnt be spot would it?.. thanks, and thanks so much for sharing.. cant wait for others.
Thanks Richard, appreciate those kind words. Yes, spot metering usually, single point focus. Think most setting are on these vids alongside the images. Shooting around f3.5-5.6 as a rule. If I pop the x2 converter on I’ll knock it up to f10 to keep sharpness. Usually try and keep the shutter speed around 1600 when possible. Hope that helps Richard, thanks again for watching👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thanks for coming back to me Mark, its great to make your acquaintance, I really enjoy your videos and will look forward to all the others, thank god you have decided to do this, believe me for the rest of us "budding" photographers you are such a great help.. I have a question, when I'm taking a photo of my son playing rugby, if its a group photo with lots going on I sometimes seem to have a great focus on the main subject but anothers hand or foot will be blurry, is that to do with the apperture?.. if that's at F2-8 should I move to say 5-6 or smaller to fix it? what Im trying to say is, If I have F22 should I expect everything to be in focus?.. Thanks Mark.
Thanks Richard. For group/team shots you’ll need an aperture of f8 or so, giving a good depth. Obviously this will slow your exposure down but that will be fine on a tripod. Try and keep the iso down for a nice good quality frame too👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thanks Mark, cant wait to get out there and practice, so, f8 (ish) auto iso but keep my eye on it, can use exposure compensation if I need, spot metering with single point focus, what would be my point of focus then Mark ? Eyes? I also use BBF too so need to know as they run toward me.. so appreciate this help Mark. Thank you
@@MarkKerton Hi Mark, Been a little confused, Ive just watched your video on settings, I though you said in a previous reply that you use spot metering but your video suggests you use evaluative metering.. It was spot focus you meant, could you do a video explaining the focus metering settings.. I find them confusing :-/, thank you, cheers
Thanks Don. I usually switch from my 400 to the 70-200 just as the players reach the 18 yard line, about 50 yards. I turn the 400 to portrait to fill the frame then swap to the 70 - 200. Hope that helps
Hi Mark. Can you recommend any gear or equipment that can send to a desk if my camera isn’t picking up the Wifi via a transmitter Is there anything else i can do to send images to a desk without using a laptop My transmitters can be funny at times
Massimiliano Boni Sorry to jump in, yes he shoots jpeg purely for speed. Everyone says it’s the greatest job in the world. If only they knew about us sitting in the freezing cold, rain, snow and your fingers being so cold that you can hardly type on your laptop isn’t so fun at times. Lol.
Thanks Tommy. 1st half I was sat on my own so it didn’t impede anyone else’s view. 2nd half I was sat in a row of guys so we usually take the hood off if it’s not needed so everyone can see clearly towards the goal. Then it started raining so I popped it back on.
Great Video blog Mark, hope you will be doing more, interesting that your shooting with ethernet connection what have you got connected at the other end I’m assuming laptop pre set with email ready to go etc.... keep them coming.
Thanks Trevor. The Ethernet is connected into a multi port box mounted on the back of the digital boards. This is basically a remote router connected to the stadium system. I hope to go into detail on this soon, weather permitting! Fingers crossed whilst I’m at Bournemouth v Chelsea tomorrow🤞🏻
Mark Kerton good luck tomorrow at Bournemouth and let’s hope storm Jorge stays away.... I’m up in Birtley to photograph the mighty Redcar Athletic in the Ebac Northern League weather permitting and will be definitely be taking the wet weather gear just in case.
Fingers crossed for you weather wise Trevor! Think we should get away with it🤞🏻 Planning on making a quick video tomorrow all being well! Have a good game tomorrow Trevor👍🏻
Hi Giannis. Very well thanks, hope you are well too. We plug into a port mounted on the digital board, which in turn are connected to the main server. I show these boxes in the next two football videos. Hope that helps.
That was a great video. First time watching your work. If you have time I have a few questions. It looked like you were shooting at 5.6 or 4.0. Why not 2.8?. Do you use single point focus? When you send pics straight from your camera those are unedited I assume. Are they edited by the service you are sending them to? Do you shoot Raw? I just saw in another post that you shoot JPG. Is that right? BTW, great pics!! Sorry, one other question. Do you use Auto ISO ever?
I will help Mark with your question, Ian. Most Premier league pitches have Ethernet Boxes that we plug in to. I say most, I believe it is a requirement but, unfortunately, not all clubs offer this. Norwich City being 1 I can think of. Sometimes 4G or WiFi is an option but it's not always reliable. :)

Thanks, much appreciated
Very cool video! Really shows what goes on! I have only done rally and more recently F1 testing. Cheers!
Thanks! 👍 I used to shoot a lot of Rallying. Really miss it!
@@MarkKertonMotorsports is awesome, actually never photographed football!! seems cool
Thank you @@MarkKerton I'll search for that video and yes that helps! I really love your channel, keep it up and stay safe
Thanks Ricardo. Keep in touch and take care
Hi Mark, great vlog as usual… what stool are you using? Thank Paul
Q? Where did you get hold of the 400mm I've got a 500mm and sometimes its too much so I'm digging deeper in the wallet :)
great content, would you please share the tips of which focus mode that you're using? will you choose the eye detection method while taking football photos? thanks!
Thanks Jack. I shoot in continuous AI Servo single point👍🏻
Respect 👌😊
Thanks for the video. Why were some photographers wearing red bibs?
Hi Rob. Red bibs are worn by the club photographers at Southampton as a rule. They can sit in different areas to us if they wish.
My dream work!
Very privileged job for sure. Thanks for watching👍🏻
Great job mate, I shoot at amateur matches here in Spain, I just leave on my 70-300 ( I use an Olympus M4/3 so that gives me 140-600 full frame) great tip about the cloudy white balance, I do that here too and it really makes the images pop..Keep up the good work....... On a side note I have the Shane Long match shirt from that game!!!
nice, man. looking forward for more :)
Thanks Daniel
Anytime Cynthia. Glad you find the videos helpful. Sadly no sport still! Time will tell I guess. Thanks for watching👍🏻
😮 clear picture
Please can you make a video of how to be a prem photographer and how to be a football photographer please I am young and aspire to be one
Hi. Thanks for watching. I’ve made a video on how I got started. Here it is ruclips.net/video/7n6IHUctxg0/видео.html
Update; i did kinda good for the first time (ur tips actually help me, like stay on stadium to the end and shoot trainers handshake)
I'll be very appreciated if u look my photos ( instagram.com/p/CRyPJjlJHjT/? ) and give me big critical (everything u see whats wrong (yesterday i watched ur video how to crop and helped a lot) ) so i can fix myself... And thank u once again for these helpful videos!!!
I’ll check your set out👍🏻
Really interesting video. Thanks Mark. Great to see behind the scenes of another area of photography 👍. Is 1/1250 a usual speed for football photography?
Thanks Martin. More soon hopefully👍🏻
Yes it is Martin. Sometimes we use a faster shutter speed on a very sunny day and sometimes slightly slower for night games in very poor light
Martin Harrison Hi Martin. Recently I’ve been shooting at 1650-2000th when possible just to make sure everything is pin sharp and frozen
@@MarkKerton sorry to have jumped in Mark, I thought you had missed that question.
@@BruceLeroyUK No problem, I was slow on this answer.
I used to use a Sun strap for my 70-200 NIkCan but found it sometimes swung to far round my back so went back to the neck strap.
Mark Kerton I have the dual strap and the fast hold moneymaker dual strap as well
Swinging in all directions NIkCan 🤣
Mark Kerton Jesus that comment covers all the non gender fluid snowflakes brigade in case someone or thing finds offence.
Were the photos showed in this video edited or from the camera directly and do you shoot Raw or JPEG?
And of course very good effort keep it up 💪
following this post...
Thank you
@@MarkKerton Hi Mark,
Been a little confused, Ive just watched your video on settings, I though you said in a previous reply that you use spot metering but your video suggests you use evaluative metering.. It was spot focus you meant, could you do a video explaining the focus metering settings.. I find them confusing :-/, thank you, cheers
Nice job Mark.
I want to know how to calculate the 400mm. At what distance can I use the 400mm?
Kenneth from Nigeria.
Thanks Don. I usually switch from my 400 to the 70-200 just as the players reach the 18 yard line, about 50 yards. I turn the 400 to portrait to fill the frame then swap to the 70 - 200. Hope that helps
IM A DJ BUT THIS IS DOPE JOB AND I DIDNT KNOW ALL THIS HAPPEN BHIND THE SCENES
Thanks for watching🤣 Glad you enjoyed seeing what goes on BTS👍🏻
Hi Mark. Can you recommend any gear or equipment that can send to a desk if my camera isn’t picking up the Wifi via a transmitter
Is there anything else i can do to send images to a desk without using a laptop
My transmitters can be funny at times
Nice bro
Thanks for watching Ashik👍🏻
Greatest job in the world 🙃
Massimiliano Boni we are very privileged👍🏻
Mark Kerton Sorry, do you shoot jpeg?
Massimiliano Boni Sorry to jump in, yes he shoots jpeg purely for speed. Everyone says it’s the greatest job in the world. If only they knew about us sitting in the freezing cold, rain, snow and your fingers being so cold that you can hardly type on your laptop isn’t so fun at times. Lol.
Mr T yes surely it’s not an easy job but I’d like very much to change my developer place with your one 🙃
@@nonnoboni 😁😁
Hi Mark, Great video , just a quick question... why do you take to hood off the 400 for some of the shots and leave it on for others?
Thanks Tommy. 1st half I was sat on my own so it didn’t impede anyone else’s view. 2nd half I was sat in a row of guys so we usually take the hood off if it’s not needed so everyone can see clearly towards the goal. Then it started raining so I popped it back on.
Random.... were you shooting in shutter priority?
Hi mate hope you are doing well , the wire cable in your camera where you connected to thanks for sharing this video. Cheers.
What lenses did you use, and how do you keep the glass dry lol
hey, how often do you shoot in MF or all the time? does it depend on the lens? is MF more accurate once you have a good eye? Cheers!
Out of interest - where do you get your network access from at pitchside? Is there ports around the advertising hoardings?
I will help Mark with your question, Ian. Most Premier league pitches have Ethernet Boxes that we plug in to. I say most, I believe it is a requirement but, unfortunately, not all clubs offer this. Norwich City being 1 I can think of. Sometimes 4G or WiFi is an option but it's not always reliable. :)
@@JgHobley Thanks for that reply
Ian Groves Jon beat me to it Ian. Thanks Jon. I didn’t know Norwich still haven’t got ports fitted!
